This place is packed which is a good thing but the way the club is set up makes it hard to move around. You pretty much have to stay in one spot the whole night because theres no room to go anywhere else in the club. Hard to dance as well cause it's so many people and not enough room to do anything. *TRIGGER WARNING- STABBING/IMMENSE LACK OF SECURITY/PROFITS OVER PEOPLE* Still processing my experience here. This is my honest experience at TORO. My boyfriend and I are city-dwellers and always aware of our surroundings. We got into line and begrudgingly each paid a $10 cover (which actually makes no sense in hindsight) since there was no DJ playing, they simply played music videos on the big screens. There is a sign out front that notifies customers to be aware of phone/wallet pick-pockets, which is obviously, knowingly bad. Luckily we were not targeted but we were definitely aware of a young group of 4-5 latino men behind us who definitely were sizing us up upon entry. The crowd is very young, ~21-24 with a few 30-somethings mixed in and 85% men compared to 15% women in attendance. The actual venue is pretty distasteful- tons of trash and liquid on the floor. A lot of the nightclub goers were overly-intoxicated with girls crawling on the floor twerking and guys falling over/down and one guy in particular who had peed on himself through his jeans. It was gross and over-crowded but since we paid a cover, felt the need to stay a little longer. Around 12:30pm we made our way to get another drink when my boyfriend noticed tons of police cars out front. TONS. Yellow tape. We thought something happened outside only to find out through another customer that there was an incident in the mens bathroom downstairs that had "just happened." The music continued for a period, the bartenders did not know what was going on until the police entered TORO and proceeded to put yellow tape across the stairs leading downstairs. We had to leave our drinks and were ushered out in the street. What is really sad, scary and unfortunate is that we noticed a metal detector in the corner of the establishment that was NOT being used. We even overheard the bartenders question why it wasn't being operated. The owner/management of TORO is clearly aware of the crime in this nightclub and area- but obviously chooses PROFITS OVER PEOPLE by collecting $10/pp and cramming young intoxicated individuals in this space but REFUSES TO PROTECT US, their sole way of churning a profit. TORO needs to answer to this: Why do other nightclub spots in the Gaslamp quarter pat down/metal detect or wand patrons but TORO does not? Why is there a $10 cover? When establishments fail to provide a safe space, EVERYONE LOSES...the city of San Diego, customers, security and waitstaff who lose out on wages and tips. Everyone is a victim who had to witness this fully-preventable incident. Shame on TORO. They should be held accountable for this gross negligence and hope and pray the victim recovers and that a lawsuit isn't on the way for them. The manager Mike and door girl "MJ" DO NOT ensure the safety of patrons. They both completely disregarded a girl that my friends & I found drugged & passed out in the restroom. They ONLY cared about removing her from the establishment NOT how she got home or any form of safety. I took my friend out for his birthday with about 15 more friends and even though we were in there for 30 minutes, we had a great time. My friend got too drunk at the pregame and ended up getting a little sloppy but the Security escorted us out respectfully and professional. This place is absolute garbage, one its overcrowded with no room to move. I had an incident last weekend where me and a friend were at this club, and an hour in we wanted to leave. I have a disability and as we were walking out the door I tripped on accident. As I was trying to regain my balance, one of the security guards thought it was appropriate to grab me from behind. I broke free of his grip and told him to back off. My friend had also realized she lost her shoe and tried to go back in to get it and as she did one of the security guards grabbed her by her hair and pulled her back. That is absolutely unacceptable. I wish I could give this place zero stars because they were so rude. We waited in line for 1hr and once we got to the bouncer they didn't let us in because they claimed we had a drink while in line. The main problem was that the people in front of us were actively drinking and were allowed in. I feel like this encounter was very uncomfortable. I've been to this place a few times but this past weekend I went my phone was stolen out of my purse! Apparently it's been happening to many people that have gone here as well! Definitely a lot of pocket pickers going around this place. It is an over crowded place so anyone can pass by you and steal your phone or wallet and you wouldn't even notice! Security should be going around more and look out for these thief's considering most of their recent reviews say the same thing about their things being stolen! this was the absolute best bar to be at while you're visiting. i went with my 2 best friends, mom, and brother after Rustic Roof, The Smoking Gun, and SideBar and let me just say - a quick side note - that the discrimination about being a party consisting of (4) 20 something-year-olds (22, 22, 22, and 28) was INSUFFERABLE at The Smoking Gun and SideBar. i can only assume that it's hard to find the treatment you get at Toro any where else. if you party people have a Tumi bag or something similar in size, don't go to SideBar unless you plan on paying extra at the entrance for it. in regards of Toro, this place won first place in my heart as a first timer at the Gas Lamp in San Diego. they are serious about security, and cocktail wise the vodka cranberry was great. the atmosphere was an absolute vibe. my mom even made a dancing buddy who, in turn, became my brother's dancing partner too. the restrooms were clean and provided a safe space in case anyone ever got overwhelmed. i highly suggest this place, it'll easily be the first venue we visit every time we come back to this district. thank you to the owner for your assistance tonight and the small bald bouncer who's name i do not know but appreciate greatly, as well as the super nice bouncer who looked at our ID's and understood our frustration at bouncer #3. read more
