Very disappointing experience. Service was painfully slow, almost nonexistent. We waited over 90 minutes before our meal came to the table. Waitress did apologize and placed one small bowl of seaweed on the table for four people and said it was on the house. Thanks. Everything had to be asked for. Plates, water, wasabi, lemon. Nobody comes back to check if we needed anything else during the meal (e.g., water, napkins etc). What was ordered? One person ordered gyoza and a spider roll. Second person ordered sushi a la carte. Third person a soft shell crab roll and two sushi pieces a la carte. Fourth person ordered a tempura appetizer and an eel roll. 90 minutes plus waiting and almost everything came out at once; appetizers and main dish. Taste was fine. Nothing to rave about. Plates were presented without any traditional Japanese decor to look appetizing. Just rolls and fish on a white plate. Only 4 tables, including ours, being served in this restaurant at the time. Came in at 7pm left around 9 pm on a Saturday evening. Yes we're in a pandemic but 90 minutes is way too much time to sit at a table waiting for appetizers or food. read more

A nice cozy sushi place. We heard of it through friends and we decided to try it. The quality is there, the presentation and service are pleasing. The Tokyo fried rice was a bit oily but tasty. I'm not a big fan of sushi. At least I didn't think I was until I went here, at which time I completely changed my mind about it. A newfound respect and appreciation for this Japanese staple ... Went with the shrimp tempura ($8), fried oysters ($8) and LBK roll (lobster, spicy Blue Crab, king Crab). For $24, I thought the price on the roll was fair and comparable to what others in the area are charging for something similar. The tempura was cooked just right. Not too crispy, but not under-fried either. The fried oysters were definitely interesting, though I still prefer mine raw or baked. The LBK roll was delicious, fresh, and came with just the right amount of wasabi and shaved ginger on the side. The staff was prompt and friendly. And it's BYOB - always a plus. read more

As an aspiring "foodie" and a sushi-lover, I've been checking out the numerous sushi bars in Montclair ever since living here for school (Redhawks, hey). I'll be straight up when I say this: this is my absolute favorite sushi restaurant in the area. I usually go here for lunch dates and get the Bento Box. The last one I got was Salmon Teriyaki with Shumai, Rice, Vegetables, and 4 pieces of Sushi. First off, the Salmon was deliciously marinated and melted in your mouth. The Shumai was every bit of fried goodness that you would want. The Rice was, well, rice. How can I explain more about that? The sushi. Guys. It was sooooo good! When you order a Bento with 4 pieces of sushi, they are are all Chef's Choice. I recieved Salmon, Shrimp, Tuna, and Snapper. Each of them was prepared so well and went down very easily. My date who I was with ordered the Esther Roll for us which consists of Shrimp Tempura, Spicy Tuna and Avocado wrapped in White Seaweed. Oh my goodness. I went this 10 times more when I go there next time. It consists of my favorite things AND it tasted delicious. Like seriously fantastic. The service there is very nice (our waitress gave us free Green Tea Mochi Ice Cream which was perfection). The atmosphere is relaxed yet refined. Like you feel fancy but not uptight, you know? I honestly recommend this to everyone. However, keep in mind that there are separate hours for lunch and dinner so plan accordingly. read more

I have to say that I will be frequenting this sushi restaurant more often. They had phenomenal fresh sushi and the price was reasonable for the quality of fish. We ordered sushi for two and the sashimi was just out of this world good. It literally melted in my mouth. It also came with two special rolls which is the chefs choice. My friend ordered the beef movie box which was definitely Delicious with plenty of food for two. The atmosphere is clean and cozy. The walls are a dark purple and green. The staff is also super friendly and gave us a complimentary Mochi dessert since our dinner was a celebration for a friend. Plus there is free parking!! I went to Toro for dinner on a Saturday night with one friend. We made a reservation but the restaurant never filled up so it wasn't necessary. Overall the experience was fine but nothing was particularly great other than the fact that the place is BYOB which is always a plus when you don't want to overpay for drinks. When we were seated our waitress immediately opened our wine bottle & brought over glasses which was nice. As an app I ordered the miso eggplant which was fine but slightly too salty & the portion was pretty small. To eat I had two rolls, eel with avocado (on the menu it's eel cucumber but they let me get avocado instead) & the garden state roll which is tempura salmon with asparagus. The garden state roll was good & unique, I've never had a similar roll before. The eel roll was pretty standard but the sauce was somewhat overpowering. Our server was friendly & I actually did not find the service to be slow like others have mentioned here. I did not like the interior of the restaurant, its not very attractive & is kind of dated. Also all the tables have thick foam glued underneath which was pretty weird. Prices are comparable to other sushi spots in the area. I think next time I want sushi around here I'll go back to my usual favorite (Aki in Bloomfield) or try somewhere new. read more

This was my first time eating here - I met up with a friend and his fiance. We ordered 3 specialty rolls and lobster fried rice. I was a fan of all 3 rolls (we ordered yuki, upper montclair, and I forget the 3rd one we ordered) and the lobster fried rice was solid as well. The place is also BYOB which is a plus - I brought a bottle of wine and the server provided 3 wine glasses. I would come back here again. There is a parking lot outside with ample space - I believe most of it is metered parking ($.75 / hour) but if you park right outside the restaurant I believe that is free parking reserved for customers. read more

We came here after failing to get another reservation at a Thai place in the same area. The food was completely underwhelming, didn't taste super fresh, and was overall not worth the time or money. We wish we had stayed home and made something simple from the pantry. In particular the soft shelf crab roll was oily and the sauce overwhelming, and the salmon in the salmon avocado roll was clearly not fresh. The color and smell of the fish just wasn't right. After one bite I put the roll to the side and didn't eat it. Went with two stars because the service was attentive and polite. Doesn't make up for the very, very, lackluster food. We passed by this spot on a Friday night and decided to stop in and try it out. A client of mine had recommended this place to us so we figured the food would be really good. Upon entering, we were immediately seated by an older woman. The place had some good traffic, but there were also a few seats available. One thing I noticed right away was that the decor was outdated and could absolutely use some updating. We then waited a while and finally a girl came over and apologized on behalf of the server who was supposed to be helping us. She took our orders and we waited about 15 min for our food to arrive. The food arrived and out 5 rolls didn't fit on one plate, so we had to have the food served on two huge round plates which made it a little inconvenient when you're trying to share with someone. The sushi itself was okay; I've definitely had much better. For $70 I figured the sushi would be a little more memorable, but it wasn't. Just regular sushi that you could expect to eat at an AYCE spot. On the brighter side, there's public parking outside and we were lucky enough to snag a spot right out front (score!) All in all, I wouldn't come back here. There's way too many good spots in Montclair and this place really needs to make a few improvements to live up to expectations. read more

I have been to Toro a number of times, and sometimes it is 4 level. Last night--a 3, decent but not extra special. I do trust their freshness. The service is friendly. But they brought our starter sushi after they served our main dishes. We did try the sea urchin, $11 for two pieces. It was our choice to try it--and it was interesting. Also had eel, tuna which was very good, and a spicy yellowtail roll which was ok. The quantity of food seemed less than we recalled in the recent past. We did have a very good Groupon deal. We will go again, for we have had some very positive sushi dining here other times. Toro is convenient location for us, and I hope this small, clean establishment can up its game one notch again. read more

Used to love this place and ate here regularly. Last year, however, I ordered delivery of some sushi rolls and my favorite tuna dumpling. When it arrived, the dumpling was shrouded in grey, slimy decomposing tuna. When I called, the owner argued back and forth with me about the high quality of her fish and that I just don't know good tuna. I'll leave it there. I threw the entire order in the garbage without touching it. I will say that a few hours later the owner dropped off a handwritten $10 certificate which was nice but fell short as a way to make amends. read more

I was invited By my friend to join her at Toro sushi. I was famished and looking for nice portions. Well I was Pleasantly surprise to meet Andy and Vicky the owners of toro sushi, they were so kind. They recommend great dishes such as Tuna Kinuta, tuna tartare and soft shell crab roll. Such a Zen atmosphere and just what I need after a stressful couple days. I am very particular about what I put in my body, trust me when I say this was the freshest sushi I have ever eaten. Every bite just melted in my mouth. If you are a true sushi lover you must try this place you will not be disappointed. The restaurant was very clean. I would definitely return and bring all my friends and family. read more

Toro is a Fantastic sushi bar. Chef Andy really cares to bring you the very best quality! The Sushi offering changes from week to week depending on what is fresh, which is exciting. Always check white board for specials! My wife and I frequent often and we are never disappointed. We always order omakase which means "leave it to the chef" and tell whatever dollar amount we want to pay. The chef then crafts amazing sushi displays that are almost a shame to eat. I almost never write yelp reviews however, after the dinner that I just had I feel obliged. I normally don't bother with a review because many places manage to meet your expectations. I was expecting just a run of the mill sushi restaurant but Toro sushi was such a surprise! I had a few pieces of sushi a la cart and a few standard rolls because I was a bit apprehensive but they did not disappoint. The salmon was melt in your mouth fresh the yellow tail was also some of the freshest I have had in NJ. I had never tried them before because to be honest there are too many sushi places in Montclair for them to be on my radar. This place has complete disregard for its customers, it is so money focused that it does not care if it has to rob its clients to get a little more money in. The delivery service is abysmal, and the customer service is criminal. I had to wait two whole hours to receive my warm, car encountered sushi. When I called the first time to check on my order I was blatantly lied to. The second time, I was told to figure it out as if it were my problems because they clearly only care about the 90 dollars I dropped on the food. My fiancé and I used to order from this place at least 3 times a month. I don't know what happened in the last month, but service has been absolutely terrible. The last 2 times we've ordered it to go we had to wait in the restaurant for at least 20 minutes. It's like they start making it when you get there after giving them a 30 minute head start. Our last and final time ordering from this place we waited 50 minutes before coming to pick it up only to find out that they ignored the order. The hostess said "sorry, it's not in the system". She didn't offer an apology or anything. I thought I had made a mistake by calling the wrong restaurant. I didn't and went back in to speak to the manger or owner. They cared so little that the waitress wasn't able to get anyone more senior than her to talk to me. To make matters worse this all happened at 9pm, so where else could we have ordered from at that time of night?? We ended up ordering from Veggie Heaven and they had our order ready in 10 minutes. I was in Montclair recently. Looking for a sushi restaurant to go to at 9:20P on my way back to NYC. Obviously a little late for the suburbs but there had to be one place open late. The other sushi place we called closed at 9:30p and they would only do take-out at 9:20p, fair enough, everyone wants to go home after work. Yelp led me to this fine establishment tucked away in a strip mall behind a main street. The people were friendly, the music was low and good and the food was delightful. I had a Yellowtail hand roll no rice and a salad. We were content. I'd stop by here again when in Montclair. MY CHECK-IN TIP: Open till 10p! We made it! Hand roll no rice is great! read more

Favorite sushi in Montclair. Staff is always friendly and sushi is fresh and excellent. Prices are very fair for the quality. This is standard for a lot of restaurants, but there is a clear correlation between how crowded they are and how long your dinner will take. On a busy night, be prepared to not get your food for at least 45 minutes to hour. Everything is prepared fresh which isn't a negative, just keep that in mind if you're trying to make a movie afterwards. Also, don't forget to go next door beforehand and get some asian beers or sake. Prices are fair and your bill won't seem bad with the help of the BYOB policy. read more

Definitely in the same league as Dai Kichi and a step above Bamboo. They present your food cleanly and with aesthetics in mind but that does not mean they skip out on freshness or flavor. I also really like the woodsy Asian decor, which was surprising given the Upper Montclair plaza strip mall location. Don't let the location fool you. I purchased a Groupon for this place, I was excited to come by but was very disappointed when I finally went earlier today. The service was great, our waitress was very attentive. The place was not filled up by any means, practically empty. We ordered 2 California rolls, a spicy salmon, a spicy tuna and 2 shrimp tempura rolls. This place is ok. I think the quality of the fish is poor. The color is not fresh and the fish isn't tender. I usually order blue fin toro or salmon toro and they just taste off to me. It's always empty here regardless what day of the week. Waiting service takes a while to fill your glass of water. Waitress is more reactive with filling glass not proactive. So expect them to walk by without looking at your table. Sushi should always be using grade A fish in my book. Grade B isn't worth the risk. read more
