The place was not filled up by any means, practically empty. We ordered 2 California rolls, a spicy salmon, a spicy tuna and 2 shrimp tempura rolls. I found a great deal on Yelp ($16 for $30 worth of food for two), and I was in the area, so I decided to try this place out with my boyfriend. The Yelp deal was enough for a light dinner (1 special roll, 1 regular roll, and an appetizer). We ordered the beef negamaki appetizer, soft shell crab roll, and Congo roll. Honestly, I wasn't impressed by the quality of the food. The Congo roll was supposed to have 3 types of fish (tuna, yellowfin, and spicy salmon) with 3 types of caviar. The fish and caviar portion were tiny and it only looked like there was spicy salmon inside. Also, the size of the roll was tiny. If I am paying $12 for a special roll, I expect it to be decent sized. The soft shell crab was in tempura form, which surprised me. The beef negamaki was cooked fresh and the best part of the meal. The interior of the restaurant is clean and pleasant, and the service is prompt and cordial. The quality of the sushi is average, the serving size is small, and they should be less stingy with the fish. But the Yelp deal was great, so I give this place 3 stars. read more

Used to love this place and ate here regularly. Last year, however, I ordered delivery of some sushi rolls and my favorite tuna dumpling. When it arrived, the dumpling was shrouded in grey, slimy decomposing tuna. When I called, the owner argued back and forth with me about the high quality of her fish and that I just don't know good tuna. I'll leave it there. I threw the entire order in the garbage without touching it. I will say that a few hours later the owner dropped off a handwritten $10 certificate which was nice but fell short as a way to make amends. read more

After reading a bunch of great reviews I finally had dinner here. The atmosphere is clean and warm (despite the view of the parking lot and the backs of other buildings). Parking is free after 7pm. The fish was fresh and the rice was seasoned very well. The tuna dumpling was an interesting take on a "crab cake" that was light and refreshing. We also enjoyed various combo plates for dinner. The rolls were clean and stayed together (dislike when they fall apart) and the sushi and sashimi were cut and presented beautifully. Have decided to make this our regular sushi spot. read more

The food was pretty good. I got the tuna dumpling as my appetizer and it was incredible. The avocado with the crab and thin tuna was really good, I just wish there was a bit more tuna! And my sushi rolls were fine. The Central Park roll was very unique and I really liked it, and the Mexican roll was fine. The service, however, was not good. Although the restaurant was half full, there was only one frazzled waitress who took forever to come over to our table to take our order and bring our food. I saw my plate of sushi sitting on the sushi bar for 10 minutes before the waitress actually brought it over. And when she gave us our check and then disappeared before I was able to give it back to her, I had to get up and find her because I was in a hurry to get to my movie. read more

The sushi here is good - the review is about the delivery. *Twice* now I've ordered delivery and had to call after nearly 3 hours after placing my order and BOTH times I was told my sushi hadn't even been MADE yet. If you can't handle deliveries on certain days, I can understand, but then make it unavailable as an option. I would also expect the business to reach out to me directly that they were running extremely late rather than me calling myself. No one expects to order food at 5 pm thinking they won't be eating until 8. The prices are high too, and there was no discount offered or "add in" for the fact the order wasn't even made hours after placing it. For that type of disservice I won't be buying from here again. I've worked in restaurants and I couldn't imagine having that type of nonchalant attitude towards customers. read more

Was here with my friend trying this place out. We ordered green tea. She had a miso soup and some assorted sushi. I ordered shrimp tempura and a tempura California roll (SoCal Roll). The shrimp tempura was very good. The SoCal roll was a bit soggy. The green tea tasted like hot water, not tea. Service was extremely slow, and out waitress didn't bring more tea each of the two times she said she would. We've tried them all in the area and even outside the area and all Japanese restaurants are second to Toro. They have the best rolls, the freshest sashimi, nice warm atmosphere and good service. Ask for the black snapper and if they have it you're in for a real treat. Oh don't forget to pick up a nice wine from next door to have with your dinner, they have a great selection. I was here in December 2008. This place is seriously the best sushi anywhere in the area. From elaborate "special" rolls, to standard favorites like spicy tuna rolls, to quail eggs, sashimi and more... we ate a wide variety of dishes here and this place does it all perfectly. The fish is completely fresh. Everything I had was made with great care. Down to earth, friendly service too. They treated my toddler well and hooked him up with some cookies at the end of our meal. Amazing place ! I have been going to this sushi spots over all other ones in Montclair for about 7 years now. They have had the same ownership since they opened and always serve the most fresh sushi. The Tuna Dumpling (crab, avocado and tempura, wrapped in Tuna) is the best sushi appetizer I've had in town. When I am too lazy to dine there I order take out, which maintains the same standards of service. The food is the same quality and didnt take very long to get delivered. I would and do recommend establishment to all of my friends! read more

A quick dinner stop here, I must say I did not ordered a full meal so my feedback is mostly on service and it was bad. I ordered a Miso soup and it took them forever tor bring it and the food the same way. It took really long. I tried the spicy tuna roll, this was not good at all. I brought a bottle of wine, asked the waiter to open it for us, about 15-20 minute, he did not return with the bottle. It was not until I asked he realized about it. The place is small and looked cozy. Some of the Sushi I saw passing me around looked great but what I tried was not. I will not go back here. read more

A solid winner in my book. We eat here at least once a month and have never been disappointed. A special there is Aji, which is a whole fish which comes to the table whole (head and tail) with the meat sashimi'd. Then they take back the fish and deep fry it--you can eat it all. Sushi is consistently fresh and I love their uni with quail egg. We usually order the Esther roll. Bottle of wine, lovely servers, all in all, it makes me very happy. read more

They really need to get on top of the cleaning, the service and the sushi. The cleaning. When we arrived the tables were sticky and there was food under our table. The service wasn't very good and the sushi quality was quite poor. The location is great! And considering that is a BYOB, they have a wine/liquor store next door, so that's a complete plus. I honestly loved the food BUT right when me and my boyf were leaving the restaurant..... Our waitress stops us out of no where and says "no tip for me?"( We did not tip the lady cus we didnt like her service) In front of everyone which was down right RUDE! Rip off It was Mother's Day . My husband and I decided to get Japanese food at home. Most of our favorable places were closed on Mother's Day. I come across this one. I ordered a special roll lobster roll - the size is only half of normal special roll you can get, the same for tuna roll. Rice and noodle are 1/3 of you can get !!! Soup is ridiculously small - half oz size of box with half full. We spent 100 including tips for delivery. We were hungry after all It is a rip off place . I heard that yelp normally would block negative review for certain merchants I hope the truth can be shared and nobody should be ripped off by such horrible place! read more

We visit this restaurant frequently for the part three years and we have not yet been disappointed. The chefs are professionally trained and fish are always fresh regardless the day of the week. Worst sushi experience EVER. I've been meaning to start writing Yelp reviews for some time now and the overwhelming disappointment that was my lunch today has pushed me to finally do so. The woman who took my order over the phone was rude right from the start. She charged me a $3 delivery fee because I live too far meanwhile I live in the same town where the restaurant is located and the delivery man arrived in less than 30 minutes (which was, hand down, the only positive point to ordering from Toro Sushi.) The fish did not taste fresh at all and it was poorly constructed. I ordered a lunch special and requested specific maki rolls which they messed up, delivering what I had not ordered. In one of the rolls, they replaced cucumber with severely wilted lettuce. Who puts lettuce in maki rolls?? I will never order from this place again and would warn anyone against making the same mistake I made which was giving them a chance because they were the only sushi spot in town that didn't seem to have a $20-$30 minimum for delivery. It was inedible and a waste of money. read more
