This is most definitely a hidden gem. From the outside it looks like tire shop. Colorful as the outside, the inside shines bright in that mustard yellow on one side and that tomato paste on the other side. Walking in, has you feeling like you got transported to Mexico. Whether it be TJ or some small coastal town, you get that authentic Mexican feel to it. Greeted by El Tri playing in the background, a novela from the 90's on the screen and Mexican idols on the wall such as Pedro Infante, Cantinflas and many more. This place has it all, fresh Oj, fresh "aqua Fresca" and huge tortas. If I wasn't watching my blood pressure and cholesterol, I would've most definitely killed that torta cubana. It was flavorful. The hotdog sliced and cooked well. The milanesas was crispy but not covered in grease. Perfect. The fried egg was nice touch. The cheese!! This bad boy was stacked with cheese. American and fresco. I know there is different ways to make a quesadilla down there but the way it was made here, really had no flavor. What caught my eye was that all the quesadillas were the same price , so even a simple cheese quesadilla was like 11 dollars. Sadly Taco Bell quesadillas taste better and are cheaper. How do you pronounce this place? Mistakenly overlooked, that's how you pronounce it! Most people don't see a small, dilapidated strip mall on Franklin and 47th and decide to pull in and try something new and different. But for those of us who do, these are the Holy Grail's that keep us searching off the beaten path. Once you overcome the first impression fears you surprisingly find yourself standing inside a very clean dining area with a handful of tables and a large chalkboard menu hanging above the ordering counter. The menu is mostly the different varieties of tortas they offer although there are a few of the more standard plates as well. Aztec murals cover a few of the walls and even though a little on the cheesy side, they're emblems that add to the distinct character of this place. Being a newbie, I asked for their most popular torta and without hesitation I was recommended the Nezayork and I now see why it's the most popular. It's a mere $9.00 and so large that it can easily be ordered as a lunch for two. It was brought to my table bursting from the seams with nicely seasoned pork leg, pineapple, shaved ham, jalapeños, onions, carrots and cheese. It's best described as a flavor volcano of comfort food that knowingly erupts in your mouth and is highly recommended if you brought your appetite. Drinks are limited but none the less they offer Mexican soda's (Coke & Pepsi), a few different flavors of Jarritos as well as horchata. This place could have success written on it if the word gets out but until then I'll enjoy a quiet lunch with no lines and minimal wait times. If the mushrooms had been fresher the dish would have been a hit for me. The cheese torta had soooo much potential but they missed the mark on this one. Some random cheeses that do not compliment each other with some canned pickled jalapeños, onions and carrots sprinkled oddly in the torta with a smear of beans. Wish they had gone heavier with the beans, toasted the bread, chose one good cheese and added better produce. It was huge and it wasn't looking forward to the next bite. It had been so many years since I tasted some "chilango" food and well I am not disappointed. I ordered a pambazo which had all authentic flavor. My boyfriend ordered alambre which was really good as well. I ended up ordering extra food to take back home since I don't live in Sacramento. They have quesadillas estilo DF (DF style) which is cheese and the meat you choose stuff in maza and deep fried. They also have Tinga which is hard to come across. This is definitely going to my go to spot whenever I'm in town. The only downside is they don't serve beer and the place gets pretty packed. Why doesn't this place have more reviews??? I can only assume that it has not yet been discovered by the "yelper" type crowd yet. What I love most about it is that they have some unique menu choices that are not found at many other Mexican restaurants. My favorite dish by far is the huarache. It consists of a football shaped base of fresh corn masa, griddled until crisp on the outside, yet soft on the inside. I can tell they use good oil, probably canola, and not lard in the masa. It is topped with beans, your choice of meat (tinga is my favorite-a chipotle simmered chicken), thin cut romaine lettuce, nopalitos (cactus, in case you don't know), and a perfect red salsa (not pico de gallo, but a spicy tomato-chile sauce). The food is super clean and flavorful! The owner knows flavor, which I have found that so many taquerias lack. Every salsa on the salsa bar is perfectly seasoned. Very economical. My husband, son and daughter come here almost every Friday, and our bill never exceeds 20.00 for all of us. My only complaint, no beer! Please people, give this place a try!
