Neighborhood Classic I always liked Tortilla Flats for the atmosphere. It's loud, bustling and fun. It's a great place for a weekend night. The margaritas are super strong. The bar is the center of attention and is always full. The food is just okay, and so is the service. The servers are efficient, but they just aren't very friendly. The food isn't bad, but it's just not great, but is reasonably priced. Tip: If you get tortilla chips and salsa, and your server asks you if you want hot, mild or both, FYI both means the two mixed together as one. Food was great!I can be a picky eater, and most of the menu was pretty "picky eater" friendly. I got the Amarillo quesadilla, which was amazing. The margaritas are great as well. I can't remember our waitress' name, but she was wonderful. The menu is extensive and versatile enough that we had a hard time deciding what to eat. She gave us her recommendations when we couldn't decide and didn't steer us wrong. We LOVE Tortilla Flats. We have been able to order and pick up at the side door about 3 times since covid started and everything is still AMAZING. My husband gets the 3 combo meals which are HUGE and certainly provides leftovers or share with the family. Oh, almost forgot to mention how delicious the cornbread is!! This is a pretty great spot to enjoy some awesome drinks & decent Tex-Mex-ish food! When we arrived about 7:30pm on a Friday we were told it would be about a 20 minute wait. I'd say it was more like ten minutes (could have been longer, I was talking so time flew by!). We were seated towards the back at a cozy table for two. I absolutely loved the twinkle lights all over the restaurant and the warm lighting. It was more inviting that way. My husband ordered the "top shelf" margarita ($8) and I ordered the raspberry margarita (made with chambord $8). When they arrived we eagerly tasted, and they did not disappoint. Highly recommend the drinks, good bang for your buck, strong and not overly sweet at all! For dinner my husband got the chimichungas which were two mini chimichangas (deep fried burritos). Because they came in two small ones he was able to try a different filling in each. He said they were tasty! Rice that came on the side was exceptional, usually the rice we get with our burritos out is pretty bland, but this was very flavorful. Also came with a side of cucumber salad. I ordered a non-traditional Tex-Mexish quesadilla. I added the "ish" because well it's not Mexican at all but it was yummy! I ordered the Savannah quesadilla with grilled chicken (also has sweet potato french fries, onion and BBQ sauce). Wow those flavors were amazing together! Chips and salsa do not come to the table for free, you have to pay for them, that was a little disappointing as that is usually standard at Mexican style restaurants. Overall great place. Busy place on a Thursday night! Good Mexican food around Hope street, divey vibe. Parking is limited but there are some street parking spots available. We came as a group and were seated immediately. Service was quick and efficient and the waiters were friendly although busy. Got the ground beef enchilada with the mole sauce which was pretty good. The beans were a tad cold but enchilada itself was good. I like that you can combine 2 or 3 items such as enchilada with something else like tortas, etc. The house margaritas were decent, not the best I've had, no seasonal drinks when we went. Tortilla Flats is good, it's not the best Mexican food I've ever had but it's also definitely not the worst. I stopped in this Friday around 7 and there was a 40 min wait for two people. The length of the wait didn't bother us but the lack of space to stand while waiting made things a bit tough. When we sat we were greeted by our waitress who we saw approximately 3x during our dining experience. I felt as though the service wasn't great. Our server while nice, wasn't very attentive. She was there to take our order, get us another beer, but never really checked in after that. Been here several times, and I have mixed feelings overall. Had several dishes, but have only liked the Diablo chicken quesadilla, it is tasty! After getting this the first time, I now get the habianoro peppers on the side. I also like the mixed salsa with the chips, for some reason I don't like the hot or mild separately. Had a couple alcoholic drinks, did not like either. They are strong, which is only good when there is a balance of flavors and the other ingredients. The margarita was particularly strong, and in my opinion just strong, and not balanced. A margarita, should be salty, sweet and sour, you should not taste just strong tequila flavor. "The Flats Margarita" = their best seller ; good and strong. Came here out of the blue. Asked the bartender if the above drink was truly the most ordered. She said, "Yea, it's the best seller," apathetically and not willing to put much more effort into suggestions than that. So, I was reluctant to ask her for menu opinions - which definitely deterred from getting a great, "Tortilla Flats" dining experience. Everyone at a former employer raved about the place; I distinctly remember the number one comment was how "strong their margaritas are." Baja fish tacos = not bad. A little too heavy on the chipotle ranch sauce, which honestly didn't taste like chipotle ranch to me. The tacos were also seasoned with too much cilantro! However, the Black Bean Salsa that came with it was really good. Rice served on the side was decent. Little dark in here, but not crowded during the work week for lunch which was nice. If you're coming for lunch, you can eat at the bar solo without it being awkward. That was a plus for me, as I came here on a whim and have always been meaning to try this place. I was born and raised in San Diego, and can tell you with 100% certainty, this isn't even close to to "authentic Mexican." That being said, the fajitas are excellent! The margaritas are also very good and very STRONG as well. Everything else though, is extremely bland. Nachos, quesadillas, tacos, burritos... meh. No spice, no flavor. I can make equal, if not better ones at home. They also charge you for chips and salsa, which is unheard of -- if not illegal back home in So Cal. They have a great bar though, and the restaurant is clean, spacious and comfortable. Bottom line: will I be back? Absolutely! Probably weekly since I live so close by. But you won't catch me ordering anything other than the steak fajitas and couple margaritas. The prices are generally reasonable (a combo of two choices--I picked an enchilada and a burrito--was about $8 and came with refried beans and rice) and the guacamole is delicious. I honestly wish their guac was a larger portion. We ordered two for two people, each at $7.50 which is a rip-off for the moderate price of avocados, but alas people will pay that much for guacamole in a Mexican restaurant, so in a business sense I think it's very smart... certainly a high profit item. I thought their enchilada was just okay, and the burrito wasn't any more impressive, but in that moment of hunger and desire for Mexican goodness, wash them down with a tall Margarita or two and you've got yourself a pretty satisfying meal. read more

I have been coming here for over 20 years. The biggest thing I love about this place is the bar. The back side has normal sized chairs so your feet are on the ground. This is my favorite type of bar. The spice level on the salsa changes from day to day. You never know what you are going to get. Good thing is that is made fresh and not from a can like most places. I learned the hard way (after a few visits) that if I am stupid enough to order a second, don't drink the whole thing! You definitely get your alcohol bang for your buck with that combo. I've had some of the other margaritas and enjoyed them, but nothing compares in potency to getting the mezcal float. As far as the food, it's ok, but not a big wow. The prices are a little higher than you would expect. We used to come here fairly often but hadn't been in a while because it was always such a struggle for me figuring out what to order. Great spot. I come here all the time and they have excellent food and service. If you come on a Friday or weekend at dinner time, there most likely will be a wait. However they have a very nice system where they take your name and number and then text you when your table is ready, which made me feel like I wouldn't get lost in the shuffle. They have a little side area where you can stand, or you could try to grab a seat at the bar, so not horrible. Come during the weekday and you won't have to wait. Once you do get seated, you will either get a booth or regular table. It's a decently big place so you usually don't feel squished in. Sometimes if they sit you up in their slightly elevated mezzanine level, it can feel a little squished, so try to grab a booth if you can. I recommend the flats margarita. It's only $6 and it's very strong, tasty, and goes great with the food. I usually have 2 and I leave feeling a nice buzz! Their corn tortilla chips are definitely home made, thick, and go great with the margs. I highly recommend the Mayan tacos. They are basically steak tacos with a side of rice and beans. Sounds simple but they are very delicious. Be careful, the side of hot sauce it comes with it pretty spicy. Staff is attentive. They get busy sometimes, but that's understandable when the place is packed. They've never given me an attitude or bad experience. All in all, 5/5. This place is consistently great. It seems like Tortilla Flats is to Brown/Providence as Border Cafe is to Harvard/Cambridge: mediocre food, minimal service, but a cheap place to eat and drink with a group. The combo platter is a great deal: you can pick two items (taco, burrito, tamale, or enchilada) with a side of refried beans and rice for around $11. Sadly, the food had zero flavor. It's not even just that it wasn't spicy; it tasted like nothing. A few shakes of the chipotle Tabasco on the table improved the situation slightly, but my tamale was still dry and hard to choke down, even though I love tamales. The "burrito" was just meat and cheese wrapper in a tortilla; a little bit of fresh tomato or lettuce somewhere on the plate would have been nice. It's also pretty stupid that you have to pay for salsa, even if it's just $2.50. Despite the underwhelming food, the sangria was really good. If you're going to come here, I would recommend an appetizers and drinks approach. Get some chips, guac, and a pitcher of sangria, and don't look back. read more

Good Mexican place, can be slammed Friday and Saturday nights so plan accordingly. Combo plates are certainly the way to go as you can custom your own meal. Service is always good and the seasonal Sangrias are always a hit whenever we try one. My only issue with coming here, for some reason people walk in the door and feel they have to yell when they dine here. It's always very loud. Having driven past this place on several occasions it was about time to drop in and try it out. Tortilla Flats serves Mexican, Cajun, and Southwestern style dishes in an eclectic, at times chaotic, and festive atmosphere. Hit it up on an off hour (like I did!) and you can avoid the long waits and head-splitting volumes that are sure to await you. Started off the early evening with a bowl of chips and mixed salsa. You can't really go wrong with this appetizer. It was sufficient to calm my growling stomach, making it easier to watch other groups steaming plates fly by, making their descent to hungry patrons tables. The menu has a good amount of choices to pick from. I ended up ordering the Chimichungas ($10.95). You get two fried tortillas filled with either shredded chicken or beef, both options served with cheese, rice, topped with guacamole and olives. I'll start off by saying I've had better. I ordered one chicken and one beef to give them both a fair shot. The shredded chicken was amazing and I plan on ordering more meals with this ingredient. Moist, delectable, simply delicious. The beef on the other hand. . . stay away! After having eaten most of it, my date pointed out its close resemblance to dog food. Bleck bleck bleck. I will not order the beef again, the taste was not enjoyable, it was quite sloppy and it did not work well in Chimichunga form. I'm interested in trying out a Traditional Combination platter next time. You can choose 2 - 3 items from $7.99 to $9.99 involving Tacos, Burritos, Tamales, and Enchiladas (with shredded chicken of course) or whatever else fits your fancy. We were surprised when it opened up into a large, loud and bustling place full to the brim with cheerful costumors. The food was good, the portions were huge and affordable, the drinks were very strong (though not the finest ;), and we really enjoyed the lively atmosphere! I would give 4 Stars, but I'm giving 5 to counteract some of the reviews that said the staff was unfriendly or rushing.
