In this industry, and really in life in general, things are going to happen that are unexpected or unintentional... but it's how you react and respond to those things to rectify them that define you as a company. The restaurant's response of "we've been doing this for 13 years" certainly doesn't fix my dried out meat, browning lettuce and foamy, fermented salsa. Having worked as a catering manager, I am well aware of the markup percentages on food, so when they finally called me back to make a gesture towards the inedible food, I was again disappointed that you thought $50 on an almost $400 bill, was fair, especially considering AT LEAST 1/3 of each tray had to be thrown out! They use the most shallow pans I've ever seen (in the pic, it's the pan all the way to the right), they cut the steak into tiny pieces and don't put any sort of liquid in the pan so OF COURSE, it's going to get dried out sitting in a chafing dish! Bottom line to other potential consumers: I'd go somewhere else! The amount of food you get for the price you pay=terrible value of your money! Management DOES NOT stand behind their product and are extremely defensive when something negative is brought to their attention. They clearly do not care about the satisfaction of their customers. read more

We have been here several times since they've opened. Each time gets worse. Tonight (cinco de Mayo) we ordered 3 orders of chicken wings and guacamole. 2 wing orders had 8 wings and one had 7. 2 wings were not even wings! They were round balls of fried breading with sauce! The guacamole is supposed to be "made to order". No way! I understand oxidation causes it to get brown but it should not be brown right when you receive the order 5 minutes after ordering it!! I make guacamole and I know how long it stays fresh. This was NOT fresh! It went right in the garbage. read more

We finally stopped in here on Tuesday night and were pleasantly surprised! The server (who is possibly the owner as well) was wonderful, and our dinners and drinks (I had the red sangria, my fave!) were very good. We started with the guacamole, which was very yummy! I had burrito that was big enough for me to have three meals out of! We were the only couple in the place, but I guess it was just a slow night or maybe they have a bigger lunch crowd? We also learned they will be doing the Tacos and Tequila fundraiser event next month. I'm just glad we still gave them a try, even with the empty parking lot and look forward to going back and trying something else! read more

This has made the list as our least favorite Mexican food spot in the area. We've tried just about all of them around, and it's usually difficult to find one that hits 5 stars in all categories. Usually it may have the best of something (like guacamole) but then have a negative in something else (like service, chips, salsa, etc). But, tonight, we found a place that had so many negatives I felt obligated to warn other Plainfielders. Ambiance: So, the remodel wasn't impressive. Atmosphere felt a bit confused to me, like it was trying to be an upscale romantic type joint, but with plastic plates??? Lighting was super low. Unfortunately, not seeing your food well didn't help it taste any better. Service: it was off to a slow start at first, to the point where my husband and I looked at each other, at our two toddlers, then back to each other and said "should we just walk out now and go somewhere else". In hindsight, wish one of us answered yes. But we stayed, and I will say the service turned out to be okay. Chips and Salsa: I think this should go without saying, but chips and salsa should ALWAYS be complimentary. Period. Now, we've been here a few years back and recall the salsa being warm. Um, like it was soup or something. So assuming they haven't changed their recipe, we really didn't miss out on anything by these not being included. Instead we tried out their guacamole, which was good. Served in a deep little bowl though that made reaching the bottom with a chip challenging. But for the price, I may or may not have used a piece of my soft corn shell tortilla to wipe out ever last bit of avocado I could get....especially since I felt cheated out of the whole salsa experience. Food: $3.33 for a taco (with a requirement to order in groups of 3). Complete madness. The Pastor flavor was great. The steak, not so much. Mushy, odd tasting, almost inedible. In fact, I left one, and used the shell instead to grasp and save every single drop of the afore mentioned guacamole. Beans, no flavor at all. And no kids menu. My dainty girls share a kids cheese quesadilla usually, which they did here at the high price of $7. Paying the Bill: we couldn't wait to leave, so when it took our waiter several (felt like 10) minutes to bring back our change, we were getting more and more antsy. But opening up the book, we understood why. $20 worth of singles. Really?!?! Bottom line: hubby was half tempted to go somewhere after this experience for a second dinner do-over to try to get the food out of our mind, but after the $50 bill we decided to just head home instead...and write this review in hopes of helping others avoid suffering a similar disappointment. read more

What an amazing dinner! My wife and I have come here three times now and can't wait to come back. Don't let the unassuming exterior deter you. The inside is very cozy and welcoming, and the staff so nice. The food is fantastic. we have been working our way through their menu and each item is better than the last. So far we have had amazing chicken tacos, veggie tacos, enchaladas and quesadillas, the food is so fresh and has great Flavor - almost a hint of Spanish flavor in this Modern take on Mexican food. Definitely worth stopping by on a date night or with a low key hangout to catch up. But of course - be patient. As with most restaurants, they could use more staff. Enjoy! read more

Food was very tasty. Had the chorizo, bean and cheese dip along with the steak, rice and beans entree. Margaritas were perfect. Had the mango & pineapple versions are really enjoyed them. Flan was good but more along the line if a cheesecake. Still very good though. Service was wonderful and the way the decor was set up made warm and inviting atmosphere. Tortilla Flatz fell flat for me. The restaurant is located in a strip mall on Route 30, just south of 135th Street. There isn't much else in the area aside from an Allstate office and a waxing salon, so I wasn't surprised that when I came in here this evening that the place was empty. It's clean, but simple. There was Latin music playing, but not obnoxiously loud. There are paintings of peppers on the walls instead of the typical maracas and sombreros. There's also a small bar area with some Chicago Cubs decor. The food was just as un-traditional, but not in a good way. A chicken chimichanga and a small guacamole set me back $15. I brought my food home and was surprised to see that the chimi didn't come with rice and beans. $10 got me a massive chimichanga though. The best part was the crispness of the tortilla and the loads of melty cheese. The rice and beans were actually in the chimichanga, but they were pinto beans, ugh! The chicken itself was dry and lacked any spice or flavor. Then I noticed peas and carrots in it too. I started dissecting my meal and then tasted lettuce. Warm lettuce is disgusting and does not belong in a hot, fried, chimichanga. It gets slimy and leaves a weird flavor. I only ate half of my chimichanga (barely even that considering I took it apart), and left the other half in the fridge intending to bring it to work for lunch tomorrow. Now I'm just sitting here thinking, "why bother?" The chips were terrible. They weren't salted, and they didn't taste fresh as if they were cooked in old oil (or dispensed from a bag, I couldn't tell). The guacamole was just okay, there were huge chunks of avocado but it was very limey. I'm kind of bummed that this little Mexican joint in a strip mall isn't very good. It seems they have been here awhile, but so far I can't see how they have made it so long. The food isn't very good, and it is overpriced. I will continue to get my fast Mexican fix at Burrito Parrilla or even Chipotle nearby. read more

We tried this place for the first time last night after seeing it busy this past weekend. We were the only people there which made us a little nervous but we stayed. The waiter was great and super friendly. The restaurant was very pretty but the very low lighting made it a little difficult to see the menu. The place was very clean and nice looking. The bar was separated from the restaurant by a half wall which was nice. We ordered chips and salsa, two steak tacos dinners one with fries and the other with rice and beans, three steak tacos and a barbacoa burrito dinner with rice and beans. The chips and salsa were good but we were surprised to find the salsa served warm. I enjoyed it while the other three in my party were not as sold on it. The food came fairly quickly and our server brought out not only the hot sauce we asked for but also a mild, just incase. The hot sauce was AMAZING! the steak tacos everyone was pleased with and my burrito was very good. I liked that the shell was a little crispy, almost like it was put on a panini press. I loved the rice while my husband did not like the veggies in it, we both passed on the refried beans after trying them. Sadly the reason the place only got one star was we all got sick after eating here. My daughter stayed home from school today and could not be far from a bathroom. None of us could. So while service was great and the food tasted good we will not be back. read more

My family and I have eaten at Torrilla Flatz twice and were not disappointed. The staff is very friendly (even brought graham crackers for my kids). The homemade chips and salsa (the salsa was not the typical but very good) were great while waiting for our meal. Everything we have tried has been very fresh and tasty. Decent overall. Went here on a Thursday evening and the place was pretty empty. Service was prompt and friendly! My friends and I all decided to order drinks, chips and guac app and also salsa (non of this is complimentary, but they do offer free refills on chips and the salsa!).The guac was nice and fresh, but could've used a little bit more kick to it (more lime or more heat, IMO). The salsa comes out warm and is real good. This has the largest chunks of veggies in it I've ever seen! Pretty cool and different! I thought the chips were fine- I've seen other reviews hating on them, but they were fresh and crispy. For my drink, I got the white sangria ($7). Mine came out with a distinct yellow hue to it. It was also suuuuuuuuuper sweet. It tasted like it has some kind of fruity syrup in it so that they could call it sangria. I actually left more than half behind... a serious first for me!! My friends seemed to enjoy their drinks a little more (a pina colada and their margarita), but said the drinks seemed pretty weak. For food, I opted for a fish burrito bowl ($11 or $12). The portion of food was pretty small for the price. Don't get me wrong, I ate it all and wasn't hungry, but I could go to chipotle for something of the same concept and leave with half left for $8! The bowl had a citrus rice, black beans, grilled whitefish and a yummy sauce on it. The flavors of this were really good, just could use a lower price tag or more for the price. I've only moved a handful of times in my life, but there are several key factors that determine our location, such as: Is the dwelling nice? Can I manage the price? Where is the closest Mexican restaurant??? Tortilla Flatz has some negative reviews, though I can't quite understand them: specifically related to the service. When we walked in, we were greeted, seated right away, and enjoyed friendly and prompt service all night. We were specifically impressed considering that our hostess was our server was our busser was our bartender. I'm docking a star for one specific reason - no complimentary chips and salsa! In hindsight, I can live with it, because the prices are so reasonable. But increase the prices $.50 and work it in the budget :) That said, we DID order it. We were going to order a large ($6) but ordered a $3 "small" because we were told we would get free refills. I'm not sure if we ended up with a small OR a large, but it was huge and we def got free refills. Do NOT be scared of the warm salsa. I could drink it. So good! Neither of the spicy salsas are that scary either. I was so, so intimidated by this menu. It's large and in charge, but it's not like I could choose something easily. Everything looked fantastic! I ended up with the shrimp burrito and was pleasantly surprised. It was crisp like it was pressed, and I loved that. I wasn't a huge fan of the rice, but the refried beans seemed home cooked. I'll try the cilantro white rice and black beans next time. Now I LOVE LOVE LOVE Rito's (in Aurora off Montgomery), and I read that a reviewer said Rito's is better. You know what - I wholeheartedly disagree. It's just different. Rito's is greasy, unhealthy, rich. Whereas everything we had at Tortilla Flatz was fresh...almost tricking you into thinking it was healthy. Not nearly as greasy. But still delish! As far as drinks go, margarita costs were average, where as the beer was super cheap ($2.50 cheap). I can't wait to try more off this menu! read more

OK- So my 1st review was bad I should be kicking myself that I'm even writing a second but we were out and the girls were absolutely screaming for food and right now. A long review would be a waste of time considering how bad everything was. So I'll make this short. You have to ask and pay for chips and salsa - and it's awful. Rice tastes like plastic. Queso is not queso but their salsa with beans. Everything was horrible. Biggest waste of $50 ever and we still felt inclined to go home and have dinner. Folks, just keep driving. read more

While it may look like a hole, their food is FANTASTIC! My husband and I get take out there about once a month, and have always had great service, amazing food and we love the horchata (sp?). I highly recommend the Chicken Taco Salad, the meat is always well seasoned and moist. EDIT 7/29/13: They've REALLY done some serious work to this place over the last year! There is now a bar in the restaurant, new decor, new tables and chairs, fresh paint, and a small outdoor dining area. Food is still awesome, and it's still the go-to place for my husband and I about once a week these days! The husband has been slowly working his way through the menu and still hasn't had a bad thing there. BONUS: they've added taco bowls (think Chipotle, but better). EDIT 2/25/14: I still cannot say enough good things about this place. We still get food from here at least once a week, and every time it's excellent. I still love their Chicken Taco Salad, but also anything with their Barbacoa is To. Die. For. Also recommend the Barbacoa Enchilladas and Flan, as well as the Horchada. They do a taco buffet on Fridays (?) that I'm dying to go to, and the renovations on the inside have made it look much better. read more

Let me first say, that when this place first opened, my family and I made weekly visits. The salsa was soooo good. The food really made me think that someone's abuela was back there cooking. I was always waiting to see this 4'10" abuelita come out from the kitchen. Well, as time went on, so the food got worse, and our visits less frequent. Tonight, however, was the last straw. You see, the "House Specialty" - 2 barbacoa tacos w/ rice & beans, is NOWHERE near special anymore. When I took my first bite of the taco, the texture was off. I couldn't place what was wrong, but something was off. I shrugged it off, and finished taco #1. #2 the first bite was the worst. I just bitten into the hugest piece of fat / grissle! I mean this was the size of a half dollar. I immediately knew what it was an spit it out. I inspected the rest of that taco, and the 3rd one I added on, only to find them full of pieces of fat and membrane. WTH?! I was just DONE with my plate now. The waitress apologize for the kitchen, saying that they always try to get all the fat out, and it had never been a problem - until now. Well, let me tell you, it is a problem now. Updated review. The renovation of the restaurant is classy/sophisticated/comfortable and a great place for an intimate dinner. It remains a family friendly restaurant however with traditional menu offerings and generous portions. There is a new small plate menu/tapas style for those that love to share tasty bites on date night or girls night out. If you read bad reviews about this place it's due to those that have unrealistic expectations. This is not Taco Bell and not your Famous Burrito. It has Spanish (Spain) roots and a fusion flair in the different flavors offered. My last time there, they had a new Gentleman 's Old Fashioned that was tasty and smooth. I could've had 5 if it wasn't a week night. --- This place is clean and friendly with good service. The authentic aspects of their menu make TFMG more than a run of the mill Mexican restaurant. In fact, everything they do is above and beyond. I come here about once a week now. Tasty chicken pozole, Spanish salsa, and many plates are made fresh and from scratch. The shrimp tacos and tilapia tacos have a very yummy sauce and in general, they have big portions always leaving me with something to take home. THEY SERVE BEER, MARGARITAS/HAND-CRAFTED COCKTAILS and have the best SANGRIA that I've ever had! The white Sangria is better than most others and they have the unique strawberry sangria available. There is also a good vegetarian selection. Desserts include the traditional flan, fried ice cream and churros but also the non-traditional lemon ice cake. We did a pitcher of the classic margarita and it was delish and they didn't fill the pitcher with ice so that when you poured more it wasn't watered down already. I immediately said it was wrong and the server apologized but said it only came in steak. Okay no big deal so got a mini chicken burrito. We tried steak, chicken and beef tacos and burritos along with guacamole which all had no taste.... Absolutely no taste. The waitress was very good so still tipped her well but to top it off, manager made me pay for the fajita I didn't eat which was the wrong item to begin with. I went here looking for a new mexican restaurant by our new home and it looks like we will stick with Ritos. Three (3) Stars is A-OK, and that's exactly the rating I'll be giving Tortilla Flatz. There were things I really liked about the food, a few things I didn't. Called ahead, they said 15 minutes....and it was ready and hot and waiting 15 minutes later. The place is nice and clean, brightly painted.....a little off the beaten path on Route 30 just south of 135th Street......be careful, you need to enter the shopping center from the access turn off just North of the building. If you miss it heading south, you will need to turn around. Quesadilla with Steak was Very Good - generous amount of steak and the cheese was oozing out of the sides. I could have been a little crispier, and the steak wasn't as tender as I would have preferred. Steak Tacos - OK Fish Tacos - VERY GOOD. In fact, I will return for the Tilapia Fish Tacos. Nice, moist fish, a good amount of lettuce, tomato and cheese. Overall, very nice hostess rung up the order and offered salsa to take home. Have had this happen over 10 times trying to order for pickup or going there. Not sure they're really open anymore but they did do a big remodel. When we first walked in the door the owner walked to our table and started complaining about expanding. Thought it was odd but if the food was good it would make up for it. Well, the food wasn't good. The salsa was mediocre at best and the rest of the meal was bland. Honestly Taco Bell would have been as good and a lot less. Our entrees were close to 9 dollars and for that I have much higher expectations. The place feels like a fast food joint with bright lights, cheap tables and tile floors. I go here for what I call the "bighead burrito", I think they call it Dave's famous burrito. It's a burrito almost as big as someone's head. I have to cut it in half so it's not hanging off my plate. I get this and have leftovers for a couple days to take to work. The story is that one of their customers (named Dave, of course) is a big guy, probably 300 pounds. He wanted a bigger burrito, and they gave it to him. The horchata is great, and the guacamole is probably I've tried anywhere. Writing this is making my mouth water. Tortilla Flatz is a sit-down restaurant with a bar. We had an early dinner here on a Saturday afternoon. We were the only customers in the restaurant. The restaurant itself was clean and the server was extremely friendly. The food, however, left a lot to be desired. I ordered guacamole, salsa and shrimp tacos. I wasn't impressed with anything. First, the wait staff is extremely prompt and friendly. I'm not sure I have been to any place where everyone that works there is concerned about my experience. From the wait staff to the cooks, everyone was very nice and checked in on us. The food is a breath of fresh air for the Plainfield area. I say this because there are not many Mexican restaurants in the area that prepare FRESH delicious food. We ordered the guacamole and salsa as an appetizer. It was amazing, very fresh. The salsa is different. It has big chunks of bell peppers and onions, however, this makes for an original tasty salsa that you couldn't find any place else in the area. It's top with cheese and cilantro and when mixed with the hot salsa it's a great combination. The guacamole is also amazing and freshly made. Huge chunks of avocados mixed to perfection. For my entree I ordered a chicken diablo burrito. The chicken is fresh shredded white meat chicken. The diablo burrito comes with rice, lettuce, beans, cheese, tomatoes, and their homemade habanero relish (which you can not find any place else). The chicken is moist and flavorful and the habanero relish delivers a nice kick. Even the hot sauce I requested was made in house. I am firm believer that beans and rice make or break a Mexican restaurant. Tortilla Flatz has very good rice beans. Finally, I feel I must comment on the horchata. It was amazing. It wasn't overly sweet and it tasted original. It had a slight taste of mint at the end which was new to me but you could definatley tell it didnt come from a mix like you would find at an El Burrito Loco or a similar establishment. Overall, very impressed with this restaurant. The only critiques I have are that the chips are not made in house and you have to pay $4 extra for rice and beans for select dishes on the menu. I have been to Tortilla Flatz several times and enjoy taking my friends who have never been. I will continue recommend this restaurant in the future. read more

We've been coming here since they opened but the last few times the quality seems to be going down. My Barbacoa tonight had more fat than actual beef, and the enchiladas were positively drowning in red sauce. This was their "last chance" as the service the last few times has been terrible, and once, when we arrived at 8:40 pm (they close at 9:00pm) we were told that they were too busy to serve us since they were preparing for a large catering event the next day. Unfortunately, they've now run out of chances and my family has unanimously decided we won't be back. read more

I got a burrito to go. I'm giving it two stars because the service was fast and friendly. The burrito itself gets maybe a half a star. For one, the beans didn't seem like they were cooked in la olla. Second, I chose barbacoa as the meat. From my experience as a Mexican and as a frequent guest at many Mexican restaurants, barbacoa is supposed to have a slightly smoky and tender taste. The meat was tender, but it was also flavorless...Lastly, the salsa that came with the burrito also didn't have any flavor. It wasn't spicy or remotely seasoned. And I didn't like the crispy tortilla but that's just a personal preference, I guess. I hate to be this harsh, but I came to Tortilla Flatz because I was avoiding going to Chipotle given their recent e.coli scandal....I'm thinking now that I should have just taken the risk.... read more

Super fresh great tasting mexican food! The owner is very friendly & knows good service. Have seen this place for years driving by and just happened to stop in the other night.
