OK, so I have to say this was probably one of the best cool bar experiences I've ever had... we rolled up with plenty of space at the bar at 3:30 PM on a Monday afternoon and we're thrilled to have a front row seat to all the restaurant bar action. We were greeted by a lovely host who seated us at the end of the bar & we proceeded to get a couple of cocktails - me with my dirty martini "handsome Rob"s w/delicious blue cheese, stuffed olives and my husband with a couple of "one for the road"s. We opted for "appetizers" before we went off to our jazz club. My husband started with dessert - chocolate cake (which was fabulous & huge) - and I opted for a full caviar set up, which was probably one of the best caviar set ups I've had in a very, very long time (I'm a bit particular and this one killed it). The caviar was from Italy, and the blinis were thick & freshly made - with finely chopped egg white, egg yolk, red onion, chives, and a nice dollop of sour cream! The bartenders were engaging & fairly attentive and the bar itself has so much history / nostalgia. It was just great sitting there and enjoying ourselves chatting with other guests and observing the scene. We were visiting from CA and so Gene & Georgetti was on our list for dinner. Overall we are very happy that we made it there for dinner. Service- our server was fantastic. Walked us through the whole menu, answered questions, and made recommendations. He truly made our dining experience special. The food was great! We shared pastas and a steak, along with the peppers and sausage appetizer and everything was great! Portions are huge! We couldn't decide what our favorite was. The only bummer is that we had an 8:30 reservation and didn't get seated until after 9 pm. I think there was an issue ( we were accidentally skipped) because people who arrived way after us were seated before us. The host was apologetic and did what she could to make it right. read more

We went to Gene & Georgetti for our anniversary and loved all the decorations on the wall and the history in the room. We ordered the lobster cocktail which was very fresh and creamy. The supreme potato was so good and I loved the béarnaise sauce for the filet mignon. My husband ordered his steak Oscar's way and said it was fantastic. The onion rings were well seasoned and they have a delicious ranch to pair with. Service was fast but we did not see our server for a good while when the restaurant started to fill up. So tonight a private group of 9 of us sat upstairs in the "Poker Room" next to a private bar. This was the most intimate experience one could hope for, with exquisite food and drinks, and attentive service! OUTSTANDING job G&G! Perfect succulent pork chops. Ginormous portions on the Chicken Vesuvius and Brazino dishes. Plentiful sides--ORDER THESE UNIQUE ONION RINGS AND THE FRESH CUT FRENCH FIES!!! As someone who dines out frequently, I understand that even great restaurants can have an occasional off night. That may have been the case during our first visit to Gene & Georgetti, so The Doctor and I decided to give them another try--and I'm very glad we did. The second visit easily earned that extra star. Fabien, Stephanie, Antonio, and Erica went above and beyond to make our evening truly lovely. We began with an order of Oysters Rockefeller. While the menu didn't specify whether the oysters were East or West Coast, based on their size I would guess East Coast. They were small but absolutely packed with flavor--so much so that we ordered a second round. For dinner, The Doctor chose the Spaghetti all'Aglione (house-made pasta with a simple tomato sauce and roasted garlic), while I ordered the Tordelli Lucchesi (house-made pasta filled with beef, pork, and herbs, finished with a Bolognese sauce). Both dishes were excellent. The Spaghetti all'Aglione was beautifully simple yet very satisfying. Personally, I didn't find the garlic particularly strong--but that worked perfectly for me, since garlic and I have a bit of a complicated relationship (even though I love the flavor). The standout of the evening for me was the Tordelli Lucchesi. I had never seen pasta shaped quite like this--it reminded me somewhat of a pierogi. The pasta itself was dense and filling, and the meat filling had wonderful flavor. The Bolognese sauce brought everything together and finished the dish beautifully. We ended the meal with a slice of carrot cake. I'm not usually a big dessert person--regular readers of my reviews may already know this--but every now and then I indulge. Gene & Georgetti's carrot cake is outstanding. Normally I scrape most of the frosting off cakes, but the frosting here was more like a creamy cream cheese layer and absolutely delicious. The cake itself was moist with a lovely balance of sweetness and spice. The slice was enormous, so The Doctor and I shared it and still had some left to take home. I personally prefer my desserts warmed slightly, and I can confirm that Gene & Georgetti's carrot cake is fantastic when heated--it really brings out the flavors. The cream cheese frosting melted a little, but I certainly didn't mind. It was still absolutely delicious. After this experience, Gene & Georgetti has officially earned a spot in our regular dining rotation. Next time, though, The Doctor and I plan to settle in at the bar. I'll still be ordering the carrot cake--but I'll definitely be taking it home so I can warm it up. read more

This is such a Chicago staple with a true Chicagoan vibe. It has the soul of the city! We stopped in for restaurant week, but have had Gene & Georgetti on our list for a while. It was the perfect setting for a date night, with romantic table setting and an intimate vibe. The service here is top notch. We were able to describe what we liked in a drink to our server and he had perfect suggestions that we both ended up loving. The food was incredible! Such a great portion and excellent quality for the restaurant week price. The steak was cooked perfectly and had an amazing sear on it. I def prefer warm seafood so it wasn't my favorite but the seafood was quality. My friends loved it. For meals we got the prime rib, NY strip, truffle pasta, and the filet. I tried everything but the filet and it was all very good. The NY strip was one of the best I've had in the city. Would def come back just for that! For sides we got the asparagus, mushrooms, and spinach. I really liked the asparagus but they were all good. I'd probably try something different next time. I have been a long time fan of G&G. I have been going to this restaurant since 1996 I was so pumped about taking my wife for the first time and it was a disappointment. So what was good? The 12oz Filet was cooked perfectly.and they sliced it for us. While it did taste good it got cold and I have had much much better. The supreme potato was the star of the show. Well done and tasted amazing!!! The cranberry martini was awesome along with the espresso martini. The fall mule was just whisky on the rocks and not good So the bad? The salad way too much dressing and over the top blue cheese. The gnocchi. Was soft and perfect but the 4 cheese was too pungent. They need to work on greetings. No one at the entrance had to navigate to find someone and not extremely personable. We had reservations but we got sat by the entrance which is by the bar and where everyone waiting for their tables stands. We and everyone on this four table area had people standing right next to them as they ate. The server was so so not bad but not great. The guy who brought water and cleaned our table was super nice. I wanted this to be as memorable as I remembered, but was sadly disappointed. Claude suggested this Chicago steakhouse due to its historic significance. Outside doesn't look like much but the inside is cozy and of the old world. Staff was attentive. The food was average. Tiramisu tasted like soap. Brussel sprouts were fine. The thick cut bacon was too salty for my liking. Prime rib was fine--the sauce that it was in tasted like a burgundy glaze--that was good. Dined here this past Sunday for an early lunch at the bar and I could not say enough good things about the bartender and food (I wish i had got his name). I was coming off my best friends bachelor party and I needed a solid meal before my flight home. This may be the oldest steakhouse in Chicago, but it's probably also one of the worst. Their premier bone in ribeye is dry, tough, and not worth $170. The potatoes are undercooked as are the Brussel sprouts. I can think of no reason to dine here in a city of great steakhouses. Go up the street to Bavette's and if you can't get a table go to Joe's. Sad that it is so bad. I take no pleasure from this review, but you'd be better off at Outback. read more

Had been on my list for years. Came in with my girlfriend the day before Valentine's day. I like the wood decor and classic layout of the restaurant. Ordered a Vesper Martini, Caesar salad, 14 oz NY strip with side of mashed potatoes. Shared some onion rings with my girlfriend. We reflected how the onion rings taste differently than the ones we get from neighborhood burger place. I remarked on how there are different varieties of onions and they probably use different onions for frying. The steak was nice and rare how I like it. The baked clams and the Burrata and Prosciutto dish baked Clams were really nicely breaded with great flavor. The Burrata and Prosciutto was fresh and very good. The fried calamari was ok. The calamari was chewy. The grilled calamari was really good. Nice big portions. I ordered the special, Risotto with seafood (clams, mussels, shrimp and lobster. The risotto was ok. We came here for my birthday dinner and I have to say I haven't had a dinner this delicious in a long time. You walk into this classic Chicago Italian steakhouse, the decor is old school but it's not outdated. The first floor is the bar area. A little bit more vibrant and loud. They say us on the second floor where it's a little bit more quieter. Either or is fine with me. They start you off with bread and butter. Really good and a perfect way to start a meal. We also started with a glass of wine for me and my wife ordered a martini and an ordered of their fried calamari. The calamari was perfectly fried and it came with a delicious marinara sauce. My wife ordered their Black Truffle Risotto which I'm not seeing on the current menu. This is no doubt the best risotto I have ever had. I'm glad my wife didn't finish it because I was able to enjoy the rest of her plate. The dish was very creamy and the rice was perfectly cooked. Would definitely order this again. I ordered their Bone-in Ribeye medium rare. The steak was seasoned and cooked perfectly. Some other steakhouses that I have gone have not been so memorable lately so I'm glad I finally got a good tasting steak. We also orders their Vesuvio potatoes for our side to share but to be honest we were already too full to really enjoy these, although they were still really good. Perfect celebratory meal! We started with the smoked shrimp cocktail, N/A Negroni and their "heavenly" Manhattan to drink. I had the 12 oz filet and my husband got the 14 oz NY strip with bernaise for our mains. Both were cooked a perfect medium rare with a great char. We shared the grilled asparagus and potato supreme for sides. I had a glass of the Il Bruciato Super Tuscan with my steak. Everything was absolutely delicious. Wonderful service. We had an amazing dinner in this romantic old school Italian restaurant. Their Grilled Calamari and Spinaci Gratinate were fantastic. We shared the fried calamari and meatballs and I went with the Pappardelle Bolognese Emilia-Romagna for my main. Let me just say everything was incredible. The pasta was perfectly cooked, the sauce was rich and flavorful and the meatballs? Chef's kiss. My friend's order I honestly can't even remember and I don't care because I was way too focused on my own amazing plate. The only small downside is that the tables are ridiculously close together. I could hear multiple conversations at once which meant I had to repeat myself like a million times and I'm naturally a loud person. But besides that this place is perfect for a big group a fancy family dinner or even a cute date night. I've lived in Chicago for over 15 years and this is the first time I have eaten at Gene & Georgetti and it won't be the last. The interior of the restaurant is charming and the staff are both friendly and attentive. They are famous for the wet aged beef and the rib eye prime rib I had was one of the juiciest I've ever eaten. The jus held its own without being too runny and the sides we had were more than enough for a table of 7 to share. The cottage fries disappeared within minutes on landing on our table. Everything was so good I forgot to take a lot of photos but that just means I was enjoying myself too much! If you're not a beef snob and you're not looking for that slab of Wagyu for $300 but just a well cooked, delicious steak, come here. You won't regret it. read more

The experience began at 9:00 AM with a simple phone call to adjust our reservation. The request was handled graciously, effortlessly setting the tone for the day. Upon arrival, a small but telling moment: the valet returned cash that had fallen from my pocket, something I hadn't even noticed. An early example that this place operates with integrity as much as excellence. Inside, the atmosphere was classic Chicago with rich wood paneling, deep red leather, timeless and comfortable. Not pretentious, not overdone. Just authentic. The staff reflected that same spirit: professional, well-dressed, attentive without hovering, and deeply knowledgeable about both the menu and the rhythm of a great meal. I've been here twice now and it's just not that great. Sat upstairs both times and the seating is so uncomfortable. Chairs flush with the wall and everyone packed in. The steaks are good and the filet Mignon is good and I would recommend. The oysters are also good. The pasta is so disappointing. There are so many better places to have Italian in Chicago.
