We actually ended up eating here because we were walking along the beach and smelled something delicious! Looking up we saw that it was coming from Tortuga Jack's so we headed in for lunch. To start, you get some free chips and salsa. These were so so good. The chips weren't too salty. And the salsa was addicting. We also ordered some guacamole, but it was just alright. It didn't have much flavor, like very lacking lime and salt. All of the other food was pretty good though. The fish was crispy and not dry, the shrimp are pretty big and juicy, and the servings are pretty satisfying. Like looking at it, I didn't expect to be full afterwards. Such a cute restaurant with very tropical vacation type vibes. Unfortunately we went on a cold rainy day so ate inside. It was fairly busy for lunch on a Sunday and service was really slow. It took maybe 10 mins for someone (who was not our server) to come great us. Our server had a bit of an attitude but we had minimal interactions so didn't really bother us. Food was good. My husband and I each got tacos and switched to mix and match since you can't do that normally. Both tacos were really good! Portion was hearty. Guac was good and fresh tasting. I had a conference in Jekyll Island, where I had never been before and was looking for a quick lunch between set up times. I was driving to driftwood Beach and saw Tortuga Jack's. It is a wonderful Mexican restaurant that is oceanfront and has ample outdoor seating. I actually ended up eating there two times when I was in town for the conference. They are was a live band, one of the times, and the second time I was there the servers recognized me, and I actually ended up sitting at the exact same table and ordering the same nachos. Had lunch on the deck at Tortuga Jacks. The band was playing and the drinks were awesome. Our server was Rebecca B and she was very sweet and attentive. We enjoyed the chips and salsa before our meals arrived. I ordered the carne asada tacos and my husband had the big burrito. All was delicious. The $8 margaritas (regular price) were soooo good. The weather was a bit chilly to sit outside, but we had our dog and enjoyed listening to the band. They have a happy hour from 2-4 Monday through Thursday, so we plan to go back tomorrow to enjoy more of those delicious margaritas and hopefully Rebecca will be our server again. read more

We use to love this place, but the last two times we have been disappointed. We love sitting on the deck and watching the waves, absorbing the fresh air, and enjoying the breeze. We sat inside this time (outside was full). We were seated and to my amazement two waitresses we discussing which one was going to "take that table" pointed and said a few not-so-nice remarks. I was shocked for sure. We ordered (once they decided and after about 15 minutes). The delivered food was not what was ordered, but we figured we would never be back. Not worth the time or effort. Went in while on vacation on a Sunday night. It was very cold inside and so we asked to be seated at the warmest table possible. The answer was well theres only one table open and hastily sat by the freezing window by who I believe was the manager. I mean..yes thats a fact but perhaps offer to let us wait or clean a table or... anything more courteous. We should have left in hindsight. The restaurant seems older and in need of improvement. The wait for food was very long..close to 30 minutes and the tacos and fajitas were just ok. Margarita was extremely watered down and even chips and salsa (complimentary) weren't great. Loved this spot! The outdoor seating with a view alone makes it worth it, but the food was just as good. Jack's chicken chimi was amazing, and I couldn't stop eating the chips and queso--so good. The complimentary salsa was also really solid. The Mexican street corn (on the cob) was amazing, and next time I'll order a couple more for the table. Rice was hard and crusty, refried beans were beyond dry, and the fajita meat was cooked until it was rubber. This restaurant is right on the water. They have inside and outside seating. Outside has a covered area and umbrellas in the open area. The service was good and the food came out fast. I had the chicken wings. They were good size and came with a side of ranch. My wife had the chicken quesadilla. They were full of cheese and chicken. My daughter got the fish tacos which came with a side of black beans and rice. The tacos had a very generous amount of fish. The only negative was the black beans were so salty they could not be eaten. read more

I felt the this restaurant had a great view from the outside bar and is also nice inside the restaurant. The staff were very nice and helpful. The food is good, not authentic but also I felt like the food had good flavor some some items that usually are just afterthought, like rice and refried beans. We are new in the area, and have eaten here several times. Each time we leave thinking maybe they were just having an off night and will give it another try. Last night we gave said try. The inside ambiance is lacking, the servers look and act like they would rather be anywhere else. ( one was wearing sweat pants and crocs) and the food was awful. The beef in the fajitas inedible. I guess the kitchen was incredibly inconsistent So overall I wouldn't be in a hurry to come back. Island options are limited so that probably keeps this place going. Another side note that bummed me out was that all of the drinks were served in single use plastic cups. From a conservation standpoint that is a ton of waste on a daily basis. read more

I was surprised that the stuffing was half rice, which I think is unusual. I have nothing against rice, but don't think I ever had it in a chimichanga before. My husband had the chile rellenos and said they were fine. The chimi was too hot for me, but I'm assuming not too much for most people. I thought the chips tasted a bit like old oil. The food was pretty basic but good Mexican food, the ambiance is very fun and you feel like your on vacation with live music and the sun shining when you sit out doors. For us the service is what sold us, not only did we get seated quick, they are pet friendly and even brought a bowl of water out for our dog. We had a decent lunch here. It's the only outdoor tiki style restaurant near the beach. And it's the only Mexican restaurant on island -- something a bit different from most of the other places. They also have inside seating, but it was comfortable enough the day we were there to sit outside. We chose to sit at the bar. We had a nice view. They were very busy -- with most every table taken during the lunch hour. The bar servers (2) were doing double duty making drinks for the restaurant and serving patrons food. So it was leisurely dining. We were given comp chips and salsa to start. The salsa was quite spicy and they had no other option. I was asked if I wanted to have some queso (melted cheese) instead which I did. Later the $5 charge appeared on our bill. I had their chicken fajitas. They were okay. There was a lot of chicken pieces mixed in with some thin sliced onions and some green peppers. The portion was large, but the chicken was quite dry. I wound up dipping the meat into the cheese sauce. The side dish came with a couple very thin tortillas wrapped in foil, a miniscule dollop of sour cream, a couple tablespoons of pico de gallo, a mound of rice, and some mixed greens. I wouldn't order this again. My husband liked his beef enchiladas more than I did my meal. There was more rice and black beans on his plate than anything else. He said it was good. He also tried one of their house margaritas. Mainly mix with a floater of booze on top. I'm still glad we stopped here. It was a break from the other same-same restaurants. Don't let the location of this restaurant excuse its other poor traits. Both service and food offerings came across as lazy and uninspired. Food servings were small and the quality of the food was extremely poor. I've been to this restaurant twice (regrettably) and was disappointed both times. Chicken tacos were small and came served in a small pool of standing moisture. Soggy, and prepared with poor quality ingredients. Mex bowl was noticeably small. We were on Jekyll for a few days and went to TJ's for dinner. We have eaten here before and were pleased with our experience. Tonight, our experience was a positive one again. We travel with our Mini Poo (Molly) so we need pet friendly options. The restaurant is usually busy and it was this evening. However, we were seated immediately and our waitress arrived quickly, took our order, and brought water for Molly, we ordered chicken tacos and a burrito. Both entrees arrive within 10 minutes. Both were very good. We were in/out in about 40 minutes. Service and food was very good. Very pleasant! I'll go again anytime we're here! read more

There are enough good reviews of Tortuga that maybe we visited on an off day. Our experience was mediocre. They were short handed, slow service. The food was edible, except for the guacamole. It was cold when we visited, and we sat inside. And that's how I'd describe the inside- cold. I'd guess on a pretty spring or fall day the huge deck would be nice. If it was cheap, I might not have thought much about it, but it wasn't. read more
