Went for brunch. Unsweet teas were sour. Common problem unfortunately. But once informed staff made some more that were ok. All of us ordered scrambles. Mine (I forget the name) had shrimp and ribeye. My eggs were not overdone (which is rare) and just on the edge of runny nor were my shrimp overdone, however, two others who ordered the King George with shrimp were in fact a bit overdone on both. Surprisingly, the King George with grouper instead of shrimp was quite tasty (though took substantially longer that the rest). I subbed potatoes for grits. I had no idea the grits come out in a huge bowl with cheese melted all over the top or I may have changed my mind, especially as the subbed potatoes seemed like about two tablespoons worth. Shrimp are not "deveined" so the poop chute is in place and adds grit and iodine flavor. Cheese is heavy handed. I think this would please a lot of people but personally I find it a bit out of hand. Biscuit was good. Not cheap at about $15 per scramble. The rasta turtle on the outside doesn't really seem to match up with a bric-a-brac interior and sports memorabilia on the walls nor the menu for the most part but I suppose that doesn't really matter. My coworker and I loved coming to this place. However our last visit wasn't so great. I had a crab cake sandwich, which I had ordered previously and it was delicious. This time it was bland and just not good. The lettuce on my sandwich was also brown and wilted. Having previously gotten food poisoning from lettuce at another restaurant, I am very cautious about funky looking lettuce. I removed the lettuce and left it laid out on a napkin on the table. Our server did not mention it when she checked on us (she was also the owner) and when I was finished, I placed the piece of lettuce back on my plate in plain view... still no mention of it. If I would have reviewed prior to this experience I would have given 4 stars as everything had been fairly great up to this point. The last experience deducts a star down to 3... I'll likely give it another shot as I feel like maybe it was just an off day. read more

This is a quaint little spot that is off the tourist beaten track! We were suggested to come here by our bed & breakfast host as we were staying in the area. So we took our bicycles and found this tucked away restaurant! I had the delicious Southern omelette with green tomatoes, cheese and chicken (substituted it for the bacon) and hubby got the huevos rancheros that came in a fried shell which I've never seen before. We had to time this right on a Sunday because they close at 2pm and we knew if they closed we'd have to go to Tubby's down the street. Which we heard was also good but that Tortuga's was better. Service was great. After lunch we found across the street a cute little boardwalk where we soaked in the sun's rays for a while before getting back on our bikes. read more

Tortuga's Island Grille is a hidden gem. The food is always excellent. I mean really, really good. I had the 1/2 lb fried shrimp appetizer. (They are so good that I have left downtown, historic Savannah, driven to Thunderbolt and gotten a double order to go before leaving town.) The blacked shrimp pasta from last night was some of the best food I've had in ages. The service is very attentive. No. They are not in the historic district where every restaurant seems to want to get a many diners in and out as quickly as possible. Do yourself a favor. Eat at a truly local restaurant. read more

My husband persuaded me to give Tortugas another chance. They were incredibly busy but service was on point. Food was delicious. Potatoes,eggs, and bacon were well-cooked and chocolate chip pancake was heavenly. Enough food for four of us (there was two of and we made a pretty good dent lol). Long story short, I'm glad we gave them another try. UPDATE: fast forward to 2018 and we've eaten there three times in two months. While most menu items are delicious, I come for the huevos rancheros. Other standouts: the biscuits, the pancakes, the grits, the scrambles, the omelets... Long story short, it's been a tumultuous relationship between me and Tortuga's, but I'm home to stay. My go-to weekend breakfast. read more

Great brunch spot for the Thunderbolt locals. The menu is interesting and unique while at the same time keeping with those familiar southern staples that we all love. Today for brunch I ordered the Big Breakfast Plate which was a great portion size and left me feeling satisfied but not overly full. The French Toast was my favorite part of the meal. I am so glad that I didn't get the full order because it would have been more sugary sweetness that I needed, but the side portion was the perfect treat! The eggs were cooked perfect and the sausage has a great homemade taste to it. 10 dollars for 2 eggs, sausage, potatoes, French toast, and a biscuit is hard to beat. Only downfall, which is why I didn't give the full 5 star rating, is the absence of a liquor license and the size of the restaurant. Everyone loves a Bloody Mary with brunch, come on Tortuga's! I used to drive by this place frequently and would glance over at it as I passed trying to figure out what it was. I mean, a restaurant? that what the sign says, but from my car, to me it looked like maybe a sandwich shop that some one gave up on building half way through? After hearing more then once from some friends that had been there that the food was quite good, I made a mental note to stop in and get a sandwich or something the next time I was passing by. I was apprehensive when I did stop, as having never been there before I did not know what to expect, and going inside, initially did not make things any clearer. When I walked in I was cheerfully greeted and told to sit anywhere I liked. The waitress brought the menus and explained the specials and I recall actually thinking to myself, OK, so not a deli then. I am a massive steak snob and immediately zeroed in on the blackened rib eye with blue cheese on the specials menu and my wife the spinach salad and fish du jour. The food arrived and MIND BLOWN! My steak was tender, the perfect temperature, blackened beautifully and with the addition of the melted blue cheese on top, I could not get it in my mouth fast enough! I was so into this steak that my wife had stopped eating and grabbed my arm to draw my attention because, without thinking I was apparently moaning suggestively with my eyes closed as I was chewing. I can say with all honesty that this was, in fact, the single best steak I have had in Savannah ever! Being a steak snob, over the last 8 years, I have sought out restaurants that serve steak specifically regardless of price, searching for the sweet taste of culinary bliss and have been disappointed more times then I can count. I love this steak so much that I now go out of my way to go there for dinner. Often I order a second steak to take home to have for lunch the next day as well, seriously! I live right down the street from this place and have only been once. I went on Friday night and it is now my new favorite place!! The ambiance is fun. It's not stuffy, and could be sexy if you wanted it to be. I went with my best friend. We started with our own bottle of wine because we don't agree. I requested the house and loved every drop of it that I drank there.... I did not finish the bottle and was allowed to take the rest with me. We enjoyed tender green fried tomatoes. Sliced thin, with a thin coating and delicious sauce over it. My blackened shrimp pasta was amazing. THe shrimp was seasoned perfectly. I loved that the dish was loaded with veggies... especially the delicate mushrooms. The serving lasted two meals. The garlic bread included was perfect. Let me assure you that the service was perfect. I highly recommend this restaurant and would return anytime someone asked me to go. read more

I was pleasantly surprised by this restaurant. My husband picked me up after a very busy Saturday morning for brunch. I came in extremely hungry and a bit impatient. The friendliness of their staff and prompt service put me at ease immediately! The Andouille Sausage Scramble was delicious! I like spicy and it did not disappoint. Then there were the grits! They were the best I've ever tasted(I am attempting to duplicate them at home)! They were stone milled grits cooked to creamy consistency and covered with a sharp cheddar and then baked to a golden brown. I can't do them justice with a description. They are a must taste! A fabulous *Local* place to eat! As a vegetarian,sometimes it's hard to find a place to grab a bite with friends. Since it is Locally owned and operated all you have to do is ask the chef. On the way to Tybee Island from celebrating our anniversary in Savannah, this little spot out of the way was a perfect breakfast stop. After avoiding a bad breakfast experience thanks to the reviews on my yelping friends, we decided to roll the dice on this place given it was on our way. The service was helpful and friendly. The decor is nothing fancy, just a very casual neighborhood joint. Coffee comes in random coffee mugs like you would get in a rental beach house. Amy just loved that homey touch. We both got the "big breakfast". Sausage patty was homemade with lots of fennel. Egg was perfect. Grits were good, but the biscuit was the best. It really hit the spot. A couple of suggestions to improve the experience. Use real maple syrup. I know the packets are convenient but they suck. Find out what is in the potatoes that give the strange metallic after taste. read more

The burger was legit! It's huge and very flavorful. Dogs are welcome out front. Our waitress was attentive and answered all of our questions honestly. I wasn't a huge fan of Savannah but this stop was definitely a highlight from our trip. If you're in the area don't let the Location put you off. The food is worth it. read more

I am not trying to make this a scathing review and in all fairness walking into this restaraunt was our second choice since Tubbys was packed.... Food was a bit over priced but moderate quality and the environment was very quite. Where my complaint comes in is at my burger, I asked for medium rare and came out almost raw. Asked politely to have it cooked a bit more got a dirty look and they cooked one half of it and left the other raw.... One and done for this place. read more

Cons: They didn't have the Cuban sandwich I wanted, so I ordered the shrimp panini with coleslaw which was rather disappointing but edible. The worse offense was that they cooked my boyfriend's steak well done when he requested it medium rare. Ruined a perfectly good steak. Have had lunch at Tortuga's on several occasions, and while a bit pricey, the food is always good. Tonight I had dinner there for the first time, and have no complaints, other than being a bit pricey yet again. Had the seafood creole, and it was very filling, a bit spicy, and good taste. However, if I get it again, I may ask to have it without the Caribbean rice, as it not needed in my opinion, and may actually detract from this dish. As for service, it was excellent. Admittedly, I arrived fairly early, and the 4 waitresses had little to do initially. But as more people arrived, the service remained excellent. read more

A nice little hole in the wall place in Savannah! We sat outside (which was kind of weird...it was literally in the parking lot), but the weather was so beautiful we didn't care. Two of us got the special - blackened snapper on Texas toast with some mayo aioli I believe. It was pretty good but the snapper was a little chewy. Their fries were awesome though. My coworker's homemade chips were apparently "just okay". I kind of wish I'd gotten something off the regular menu just to see how good this place is on a regular basis. I was pretty disappointed because everything sounded so good and I was starving. I will go back to try some more of their items, but overall if I could give it 3.5 stars I would. read more

EVERYTHING is absolutely delicious. Especially the homemade sausage! We stayed in Savannah with 11 people and they all raves about their food. Half of us ate here the next day and we were devastated that they are closed Monday & Tuesday because we wanted to eat here EVERYDAY! Our server had never heard of a Cubano before, which should have been our first warning sign for a supposed Caribbean grille. The artwork was most assuredly carib, but the music and and attitude was poor white low country. The price wasn't... wow. I had a more affordable meal at olde pink house. They were listed as 2$ but it was $26 for shrimp n grits. Riddle me that. Our server didn't want us to be there... she served the guy who came in after us first. That was a New York move. I still tipped ya lady, but it was a southern hospitality thing, just like two stars instead of one. Because the cook at least pulled his weight. The food's not bad. read more
