A very solid Italian restaurant but, as others have said, not really "fusion." We went for lunch last week and I was very impressed by how reasonable and affordable the prices were--especially considering the size of the entrees. For example, I ordered the $8 eggplant rollatini appetizer and not only was it creamy and delicious, it was plenty enough food for a nice meal (I also ordered a side salad). I sampled a few other dishes too--I would recommend sticking to their red sauces. The pasta carbonara I tried was much too salty and rich (we couldn't even finish eating it). And the garlic bread was only so-so. But I loved the eggplant rollatini! read more

I would like to rate Toscana higher, but the overall experience is really brought down by cluelessness about how to run the front of the house. Our waitress did a good job, but she had to make up for the ridiculousness of the host. We called around 5:30pm for a 7pm reservation on a Monday night. We were told "No problem." We arrived at 7, and there were two people sort of standing in the doorway, clearly waiting to be seated. There was no host stand, and really nowhere to wait. Eventually, we squeezed our way into the restaurant, and waited by the cash register, finally letting the host know that we had arrived for our reservation. He indicated that it would be "just a couple minutes," but it was clear from looking around the restaurant that there were no 4-tops that were going to be finished that quickly. We watched the same host answer the phone a few times, happily telling callers to come in and that the wait "was not too bad." He told the same thing to a couple of walk-ins. We also got to see the comedy of errors of the host and other staff trying to set a large table for a baseball team set to arrive at 7:30. Staff kept stealing chairs from tables as they finished and left and moved them to the big table. Then they would try to seat one of the smaller tables, and would just move chairs from another small table. Real life musical chairs! Of course, we were still standing this entire time, as the minutes kept ticking by. When we complained gently to the host, he just could not have cared less. One of the servers--she turned out to have our table--just rolled her eyes at the host and apologized to us, making it clear that this was a regular occurrence. We were finally seated 39 minutes after our reservation time, with not so much as an apology. The food was good, the value was good. Try the pasta bolognese, skip the chicken francese. And don't have plans for after dinner that you can't be late for. read more

First I must say that this place is SO couples friendly! Last year I was married at the Baseball Hall of Fame on Valentine's Day and on a weeks notice they made a section of the restaurant available for a small wedding party for our reception. So for our one year anniversary we returned to Cooperstown and to Toscana, this time just my wife and I...and they had a quaint corner table waiting for us. We had a very attentive server and an entire staff that seemed to know or remember us from last year. I love Cooperstown and have spent a lot of time in the area since I have connections to the HoF as both a fan of baseball as well as being a lifetime donor member of the Hall of Fame. Everything is done so fantastic from the moment you are seated, the staff is so attentive and knowledgeable and as good as the service is, the food is even better! The server commented how beautiful our cake was last year and then brought us out a chocolate mouse with a flour-less cake that was amazingly rich that it almost tasted like a brownie. When a 5 STAR rating says "Woohoo! As good as it gets!" YEAH, they were talking about this restaurant. I'm not even sure where to really start or what to describe because the only way to experience this place is to walk through the doors, you will not be disappointed I assure you! read more

We recently moved to Cooperstown and were very pleased to find Toscana. Our first experience was out of this world but that was in February. Service and waitress was great. Since then we have always had great food. However, there is one waitress there that I wouldn't hire to work in a diner. She is abrupt, rude, overwhelmed with simple requests and is nothing more than a food runner. Unfortunately, we've had her twice. I'm not sure how to request a real waitress but I'm working on it. Also as a note to the management. I understand that a lot of your business is generated by tourists often with children. However, plastic coke-a-cola cups filled with water are beneath you. Small changes like that and some staff changes and you'd be much better off. Food is always above average but I suspect that most comments on here are related to one waitress. We're taking friends tomorrow hopefully we will win the server lottery. read more

Best meal we had on this vacation! We had lunch at Toscana in Cooperstown in early August, 2012. My husband had a Mediterranean salad with grilled vegetables. I had a Caesar salad with grilled calamari and we shared an appetizer, a wonderful bruschetta. When we asked our server about the unusual flavor of the bruschetta, the chef, Tony, came out from the kitchen and talked with us, sharing his secret: a balsamic reduction. He then surprised us with a to-die-for desert: his flour-less chocolate cake. This simple, unassuming little Italian restaurant was the best dining experience we had on this vacation, and being from Chicago,where we have so many great restaurants, we are fairly picky. I hear the food is great but the service was so awful and the people so rude we walked out. We called and spoke to Tony the maître d' - we asked if he could take a large party and he told us to come in. When we got there, he told us a table would be ready soon. After waiting 15 minutes, he told us he never had a table and never would. By far, the rudest restaurant worker I have ever encountered and I've been to a lot of restaurants. This authentic trattoria, an upscale Italian restaurant across the street from the Baseball Hall of Fame, served delicious food in large portions. We ordered the pasta primavera (they accommodated my request for pomodoro sauce instead of the garlic and olive oil on the menu) and the pasta Toscana with vodka sauce; both were hearty and substantial. We made a reservation for 8p and were seated about 8:30 or so; they don't have a bar area to wait in, which made it challenging. Waitstaff was very pleasant and accommodating, but you could tell they were overwhelmed. The appetizers (caprese and a caesar salad) were delicious! Entrees were good, but overpriced in my opinion. Wonderful food, wonderful staff, great value. They were very accommodating when we shared courses through the whole meal. We had an escargot appetizer with a fabulous creamy pesto that screamed to be soaked up with their warm crisp multigrain loaf. This was followed by a Tuscan salad with a quality balsamic, marinated eggplant, zucchini, roasted red peppers, fresh mozzarella and even some caper buds to kick it up a notch. Then a fine carbonara pasta followed by a rack of lamb properly rare and served with a tasty reduction, fresh veggies and mashed potatoes. Followed by a truly authenntic Tira Misu. After dining at this establishment I must express my deepest appreciation for the afore mentioned experience. To begin the food was beyond exquisite. Having only visited the robust culture of fine Italian cuisine in my wildest dreams, I am brought to my knees over and over again with the nostalgic reminders of what extraordinary food tastes like. After struggling with myself over dozens of appealing choices I finally decided upon the meatball hoagie. After all, to impress one with a mere sandwich truly expresses the potential of a restaurateur. This was no ordinary, run-of-the-mill sandwich, however. Meat so perfectly blended you could distinguish the hand crafted quality, cheese drizzling with smooth perfecting between each crevasse, toasted bread making its garlic-butter filled passion ever so present. To say I was on cloud nine dancing with the Prince of Monaco would be an insulting understatement. I am still to this very moment taken away by the intensity or flavors that were so delicately yet intentionally created by the master chef. I cannot think of any other experience in life that could remotely compare to the enjoyment I received consuming this gilded masterpiece of a sandwich. I will forever scoff at any assortment of sauce, meat and cheese as long as this supreme delicacy is in existence. That being said, my obituary will note the cause of death being due to the lack of pure ecstasy derived from this sub. Whether you are a wandering soul looking for meaning in your life, whether you are an epicurean critique searching that one place that makes you say 'wow' or whether you are simply a thrill seeking individual who happens to find them self in Cooperstown; this is a must. I cannot express how much this restaurant has changed me. Since the moment I walked into Toscana I have craved the day I return. I find myself so infatuated with this restaurant that I have sought out a psychiatrist in order to help me cope with the depression that comes from not eating there on a daily basis. It looked pretty busy and took reservations but the owner said he could probably fit us in if we waited around 15 minutes. Sure enough he came out and we were seated. The wife had a penne pasta and I had Osso buco Milanese which was a pork shank simmered in fresh herbs and a tasty broth. Both were very good and so was the bread which is standard at any Italian restaurant these days. We also had calamari for appetizer but that was very average. read more

My wife and I both agree that this may have been the best Italian meal we've ever had in our lives. Kathy had the shrimp and scallops on angel hair pasta I had chicken parmesan. The service was excellent, the pasta was perfectly cooked and the sauces were made from scratch. Bread was out of the oven fresh and delicious. Took my family after the Hall of Fame Classic and had a good meal. Service was a bit slow and disorganized, but the sauce made up for it. We did not have reservations but the Owner greeted us with a smile and quickly found us a table for four. The bread basket served with olive oil, garlic and seasoning was a nice start and we followed with mozzarella sticks - a favorite of my kids. The sticks took longer than they should have due to our forgetful waiter but we appreciated the free wine refills that the Owner brought to us. The place got busier and soon there was a line out the door. This is when we noticed that the waitstaff was having trouble keeping up. Seemed like they had enough bodies - just wasn't someone there in charge or directing traffic. We had chicken parm which came with a large side dish of pasta. Sauce was excellent. Would have liked fresh grated parmigiana but again, that gets back to our waiter... My son had the Carbonnara, first time for him and he loved it. Wife had the Bolognese and she was very pleased. All in all a very solid meal and many other impressive looking items on the menu with a friendly owner who made the rounds and enjoyed making everyone feel welcome. I only wish we had better service. The dinner took 90 minutes and it should have been 60 minutes. The four star rating is for the food and the sauce. I'll go back and would recommend it to friends. Beware! The prices on their online menu is not what you will pay in Cooperstown. When my friends and I arrived at our appointed reservation time and were seated, we were displeased to see that the prices listed on their menu were higher than the prices listed on their online menu by 33%-50%. When I asked the waitress about this her automatic response was that the prices on their website are for the restaurant in Oneonta. We asked her to get the manager who 5 minutes later, after much discussion with other employees, came to our table to say that the elevated prices are what we would be paying. End of discussion. As I do not like to be taken as a sucker, we all decided to get up and leave. I have never been to any establishment who does not honor a price discrepancy in the customer's favor. My husband and I ventured into Toscana on a very snowy Sunday night and were totally taken care of. We loved the hot bread and oil to start. Caesar salads had a great salad dressing (and I never eat salad dressing). We were in the mood for pasta - I had pasta primavera and he had spaghetti and meatballs. Simply good food. Came across Toscana while walking through Cooperstown on a cold Sunday in February. Just about everything in town was closed except for Toscana, but we ended up having a good dinner. Warm, welcoming service and good food. The chef split a prime rib for my two kids, wife had chicken masala which underwhelmed her and I had the shrimp scampi which was delicious. This place deserves every bit of the five stars I have rated it! What a gem in a fairly boring and bland culinary town. We decided to try this place based on the favorable reviews and we were certainly not disappointed. We had a reservation for 3 plus an infant at 6:30 but arrived early around 5:45 and were seated right away with no problem. The owner was very nice and really took to my one year old, making him laugh and clap away. We started out with an order of calamari and caprese salad, both of which were delicious. The calamari were perfectly cooked and the pomodoro dipping sauce was the best I have ever had (I'm Italian; it says a lot). The caprese was served with whole basil leaves on the side so you could choose how much or how little you'd like. They added some marinated zucchini and eggplant to elevate the dish from your normal old caprese. The bread they serve is divine; a nice loaf of perfectly balanced multigrain bread, not too sweet or dense. It was accompanied by an olive oil/pesto/cheese/roasted red pepper dip that was so good. I didn't think I'd even be able to eat my main course after all the bread, caprese and calamari I inhaled but that feeling quickly subsided when my Zuppa de Pesce was placed in front of me. I cannot express well enough how delicious this dish was. Everything from the seafood to the pasta was cooked just right and the flavors were perfectly balanced. The dish included shrimp, scallops, clams and calamari. The shrimp were large, at least a 16-20 size, the scallop was a sea scallop, not some of those tiny bay scallops you'll sometimes get. Some little necks and fresh calamari finished off the dish. Impressive amount for only $24 in upstate NY. I think that's why I'm just so enamored with this place. Aside from the food, the atmosphere, service and child friendly environment all added to the great experience we had at this restaurant and we cannot wait to go back.
