The sear was not there, and you couldn't taste it, like you could at even some of the places with conveyor belts. However, overall, it's not a bad place to some food, not from a hospital. A Japanese sushi restaurant in a strip mall? For an undesirable location, they don't seem to have any problems with business. From start to finish, during our meal, customers were constantly coming and going. With that being said, we must have come on an off night. I ordered the Chirashi Deluxe and while the fish tasted fresh, the slices of fish were cut pretty horribly. Seeing the pictures other Yelpers have posted of lovely, thick pieces of sashimi, I don't think this can be the usual presentation. My friends ordered the sashimi & tempura dinner and a bowl of ramen. The ramen seemed to underwhelm, though the tempura was nice and crispy. Service was lacking except to take our orders and drop off the bill, but we actually didn't mind since we didn't need too much anyway. How do you conquer hungriness and cold weather? One word. TOSHI. Oh and still 5 stars for the quaint homey and well attended service. It isn't as crowded as I used to go (pre dinner). So I would recommend going after 8 as well. They close at 930 and the crowd seems to thin after 8pm. That or I went in at a cold night. Cold nights calls for warm food. Hot and almost steaming, the Gomoku ramen is the bomb. It has an array of veggies and meats. From baby corns to different kinds of mushrooms, to cabbage among others. I got pork/beef slices, and shrimps. It was affordable and the servings are plenty to be saved up for late night snack. Don't take my word for having a left over. I'm a light eater and often people watch as I eat. A hungry person can devour a bowlful of hot and tasty ramen. read more

I love, love, love Toshi's! Great sushi - dare I say the best in the Portland metro area? I know spicy tuna is a Japanese American thing, but I love it! The spicy tuna here doesn't have an overload of sriracha on top like other sushi bars in the area. (Sriracha is Thai hot sauce, btw.) I also like their other Japanese-American staple: Shrimp tempura roll. I love that it has the purely Japanese touch of mayonaise and kaiware. Nigiri is always consistent in quality and quantity. I love the ramen. It looks and tastes like ramen I remember from growing up in Japan. Better even than ramen I've gotten in Hawaii! (I think there's too much of a saimin influence for noodle places there...) If you order a combo, just be prepared for a ton of food! I had the miso ramen - half curry rice combo once and it came with a full-sized ramen and as much curry as I'd serve to one person when I make it at home. I've seen the half fried rice with the ramen, too and the girl couldn't finish more than half of it. I recommend going with ramen and gyoza if you do the combo - it's a Japanese ramen house staple. It's a full order of gyoza with your ramen - good size and very complimentary. I like the other noodles here, too - udon and soba. The best is chuka ramen in the summer! Haven't had that anywhere else outside of Japan. Try it if you get a chance - it's "different," but oh so yummy! The ramen noodles are boiled then served chilled and dry with chopped up veggies and egg (and maybe fish cake) on top. There is a tangy sauce that is either poured over it, or served on the side (can't remember which right now). They also have somen in the summer. The curry is great - different than the House-brand Vermont curry I make at home, but so very Japanese! During the winter I'll often break my "don't-get-it-if-you-can-make-it-just-as-well-or-better-at-home" rule and get an order with chicken katsu... yum! The tempura is also top notch! The batter is crispy and not greasy. You get kabocha (pumpkin/squash) and Japanese sweet potato with the veggies. [side note: what's up with broccoli tempura here? it's weird.] My only issue is that they give salad and miso soup with everything - even the noodles. I guess it's to please the American clientele, but it makes for way too big of a meal if you are getting noodles or donburi and that's not how they serve it in Japan - only teishoku (complete dinners) get the miso and sides. I always leave here over stuffed, but I just can't help it. I want to eat one of everything I love.... everytime! I know... I feel like a complete pig just reading this. On a practical side note: Make reservations whenever you can - even if you just call ahead on the way over. It can get crowded after 6pm any day of the week. Was expecting more after hearing it's one of the best Japanese restaurants in the area. Yes, the food was quite authentic. However, the food itself was not exemplary. The mixed tempura had too much batter on it. The salad they served was pretty sad. It had almost no flavor to it. Cold ramen was alright. I would suggest to order the Chirashi deluxe if you like your sashimi. There's a good amount of assorted sashimi and vegetables. The sashimi are all very fresh and delicious. I also really enjoyed the hot tea, it had a very strong scent to it. Service was a little slow in regards to taking orders, serving food, giving us the bill. All the food did eventually come and they all came correctly, though. They were also very nice and polite. I would want to try their hot foods the next time I come. Update 8/17/2013 Came back for a huge bowl of ramen and half curry with rice to carbo load for the Portland Century the next day. Service was excellent. They have more staff and were quick and attentive. The food was outstanding as ever. The food here really is top notch real Japanese food. Now that their service is up to par, I'm going to go 5 star on this place again. Love it. Good food just like I had as a kid in Japan. Update 6/15/2013 Since the following review, I have gone three more times and not had the abysmal service problems. They would be 5 star but I'm still not convinced they don't have a bad service day left in them. ======================= I gave this a 4 star review once. Now I'm ammending that, and it has nothing to do with the wonderful food. Last time we went to eat here, I thought it'd make for some great carbo-loading for an all day bike ride the next day. A big bowl of Ramen and a plate of curry and rice from Toshi's always hits the spot. Unfortunately, the service, which is always slow and spotty, was worse than ever. We were sat at a table fairly quickly, and then completely forgotten. People that came in after us were being served, and I could hear the staff in the kitchen talking about their orders while we hadn't even received so much as water or menus. We finally got up and left. Driving out of the parking lot, I noticed that 40 minutes had elapsed from the time we sat down to the time we were driving away, and no one had taken our order or brought us even a drink. It's annoying enough for adults, but we had our four year old with us, and some of you might be familiar with the patience level of children when it comes to sitting around waiting for food. Hint: It's not high. I hate giving up this place, but I'm not going back. This was just the worst in a series of incidents of slow service. The waitress needs to learn how to run a restaurant, she's always harried and behind the pace. Either get some reliable help or learn to deal with stress. We went to Pasta Pronto after leaving, and they had food on our table within 15 minutes, despite the fact it was busy there. Great food, just like I loved in Japan, and I'm going to miss it. This is one of those places that I usually opt for the fish and not the crazy rolls. The freshness of the fish here really speaks for itself. A friend I hadn't seen in a while suggested we meet up for lunch. After some debate (you know the kind..."Mexican?...no....Soup and Salad?...meh.....") We arrived at "Sushi? Yeah, that sounds great!". Monday 11:30am just as they were opening the doors. Friend and I sat down and perused the menu. This place is a hole in the wall. Pretty much there were a couple four-tops and a few more two's. I think I counted 24 seats total. Within 15 minutes, the place was packed to capacity. Our lovely server brought us tea and took our orders. Friend ordered a couple of rolls and I ordered some nigiri (saba--mackerel, and maguro--tuna) and a Chirachi Deluxe (various sashimi on a bed of rice, served in a bowl). Everything arrived in a reasonable amount of time and it was beautiful. The rolls were excellent--especially the eel/avocado roll. The eel was flavorful and melt-in-your-mouth tender. Probably the best eel I've had. Everything else was right up there in quality. Even the Uni (sea urchin gonads) which I've never been a huge fan of were very buttery, oceany and mild--and very very fresh. Every bite of fish was excellent. They had plenty of non-sushi Izakaya-style items on the menu as well, for those folks who like Japanese food in general but aren't sushi eaters. Quality is right up there with some of the freshest and tastiest sushi I've had. I would dare say this competes with Hillsboro's iconic Syun Izakaya (gasp!) for fish quality, freshness and taste. All from this tiny little pod storefront you'd miss if you weren't looking right at it. Wife N. and I missed date night last Friday night, so we're making up for it tonight. Toshi's is a little hole-in-the-wall Japanese restaurant hidden in this shopping plaza of Baseline and 185th. I've heard the raves about the sushi and ramen and went to try it out with a couple of friends. I do give them props for having good ramen. The noodles are really yummy and I couldn't believe I ate the whole thing. I actually ordered one of their combos for $11.95 which included 6 California Rolls. I was in the mood for sushi and ramen. Unfortunately the California Rolls weren't all that great. For being a Japanese restaurant I was expecting something with more substance than just more rice ratio to the ingredients such as the crab. Which is why I had to give you 3 stars. I did want to like this place but another friend of mine found a bone in one of her hand rolls. Which is not good if you're a sushi joint. Toshi's does have good service. Parking is found in their parking lot. Be aware that if you do go here that the place is a small restaurant so a party of 25 would probably fill up the whole place. Overall if you do decide to come eat here, just come for the ramen. Go somewhere else for sushi if that's what your craving. read more

The Good: :: it's a dive place with a lot of character. definitely a case of "don't judge a book by its cover" :: the place has a japanese guy working as the sushi chef, and the woman that works as the hostess is also japanese :: the service. the hostess is very sweet and attentive :: they have a good selection of sake. try their cold unfiltered. it's slightly frothy :: the miso is solid :: the prawn tempura was really delicious and light, not at all oily and not at all greasy. mmm :: the nigiri was amazing. we had something of everything. try the toro, the hotate (scallop), sake (salmon), tai (red snapper), anago (barbecued sea eel), maguro (tuna), hamachi (yellow tail), kani (real crab), and albacore :: with all the gorging we did, it only came out to $35 a person, including a huge cup of sake! The Bad: :: it's in a strip mall, so while the food is amazing, those of you looking for ambiance are going to be missing out :: not much seating inside, so if you come too late, this place will get packed and you will have to end up waiting :: i got some kind of sauce in my handroll that i didn't care much for. :: didn't see sashimi on the menu?? maybe i just overlooked it somehow? hmm...looking at the menu right now and i'm still not seeing it. oh well. maybe i'm not in the know! Cute little shop that I like to go to when I'm lazy and want to eat somewhere close to home. The food isn't the best Japanese food but probably pretty good for Portland standards. TONKATSU CURRY rice : My favorite dish to order here of the many different dishes I've tried. Tonkatsu is a little on the dry side sometimes but it's okay since you have curry to pair it with. CURRY UDON : My other favorite dish to get which is perfect for the cold Oregon winters. The curry sauce is nice and thick too. MAPO TOFU rice : I love mapo tofu and their version is quite tasty. Just comfort food that I could probably make easily myself with those mapo tofu sauces they sell in the supermarket but this is nice for the convenience. Spicy tuna roll : My favorite roll to order at any Japanese restaurant and Toshi's is pretty good. One of my favorite Japanese restaurants in Oregon I've been here quite a few times and ordered something different every time. They have yet to have an item on the menu I don't like. Place is small it's best to go early or there may be a wait. Dishes I tried include: Chirashi: My all time favorite dish there. Fresh slices of assorted fish, fish eggs, tamago on top of perfectly seasoned sushi rice. It hits the spot for a fish lover like me. Tonkatsu curry: Delicious, comforting and warm on a cold winter night. Not too salty, very savory goes well with the crispy made to order tonkatsu. A japanese staple for the winter. Mabo Ramen: Very tasty fills that ramen craving. While this is more of a chinese fusion dish the broth and the mabo sauce is made from scratch . Hamachi Collar: A classic dish flavorful fish perfectly broiled and served with a steaming bowl of rice. Curry Udon: Very tasty thick udon with thick curry sauce. Comforting and filling for a tough day in the cold. Hiyashi Chuka: Summer item cold ramen noodles with assorted topping with a dipping sauce. Very refreshing on a summer night and they use real crab instead of krab. I have still yet finish my quest of trying every item on the menu. I'll keep coming back for more. read more

I judge sushi on how well the rice is cooked. Go watch any documentary on sushi making, and that's the first thing they learn. At some of the more famous places, you literally wash rice for a year before doing anything else. Equate that to a burger joint like In-n-Out (which unfortunately is not in Portland) where you cut fries as your first gig. This sushi rice is mushy and the flavor is off. The fish itself is okay, but thinly cut. There is a single chef here because the place is small, so he's hustling and he's non stop. The shrimp came from a package, the same ones they sell in an Asian grocery store, so all he had to do is put it atop the nigiri. This is very telling of what to expect. I came in expecting a lot because of the reviews but left with leftovers and disappointment. We didn't eat the leftovers. read more

My two favorite things in life: booze and a bowl of soupy carbs. Those are the only two things I ever order at Toshis and they don't let me down. Toshi's has a great selection of sake and beer. Their cold house sake is pretty good. It's smooth, yet there's an alcoholic kick to it. They even have Sayuri (the sake that comes in the pretty pink bottle) for your lady friend, if you know what I'm saying. My favorite ramen are their Mabo and Gomoku ramen. The Mabo ramen broth is thick and flavorful. Although it is not as spicy as I would like it, you can request hot chili oil and red pepper flakes to doctor it up. Their Gomoku ramen is simple and full of veggies, perfect for those days when you need something healthier. I'll definitely come back and order other items from their menu. And from the looks of the plastic prepared foods at the sushi counter, it seems like they have delicious egg donburi. read more

It's been a little hit & miss with this joint. Ran by real Japanese people, they certainly have a lot of Japanese clientele. Interestingly, most of them hardly ever order the sushi. Most order some kind of noodle soup. They have more than 10 different noodle soups: soba, ramen, udon noodles; shoyu, miso, tonkotsu, etc broth. I've tried a few and I think they're all pretty solid. One time they overcooked the noodles and that was a big strike against them. They have a huge menu so they're decent on all but not exceptional in any. Space is tiny, but they handle the crowd expertly. Service is definitely top-notch! It might not have been the most sanitary choice, but who cares? The place is super small, but we didn't have a problem getting a table. The waitress was really friendly, and fast. We ordered some sushi rolls which ended up coming with miso soup and salad. The fish was so so so so so so so fresh. I'm still thinking about that eel.... You know a place is authentic when you are the only white person in the room and you can't read the menu. Just kidding, just kidding. I mean, this was true, but in a good way. Now seriously. Toshi's is phenomenal. Upon arriving, we were immediately greeted by a very pleasant Japanese woman, and a room full of Japanese dinner guests. The location is small and in a strip mall, with no more than 10 tables - just my type of place! The menu is both in English and Japanese, and it's not your standard Americanized Japanese fare. We decided to order a couple of rolls to start (creamy scallops, sea urchin and barbequed eel). The portions were great on these. There are many items on the menu I've never seen or heard of before, which inspires me to come back and try something different. For dinner, we followed up with the Toshi Combo which was $17.95 but a great deal because it came with miso soup, salad, an entire order to tempura (shrimp and veggies), your choice of a California roll or sashimi, a bowl of rice and your choice of meat dish. The choices on the meat were chicken, beef, pork, steamed salmon or teriyaki salmon. That alone would have been enough dinner for two people! Overall, the experience was peaceful, delicious and I look forward to coming back. Toshi's is as authentic as I've seen it in Oregon. Everything is super fresh. Food was absolutely phenomenal! I ordered the house special with pork katsu, sashimi, and tempura, and I have to say that it was the best sashimi I've had since moving to PDX. Tuna practically melted in my mouth, and the tako wasn't chewy at all! It wasn't the prettiest presentation, but texture and taste made up for it all :) Tempura was light and crunchy without being too oily or soggy. It took a while after my salad and miso soup were served to actually receive my order though :( I'm glad I arrived before the rush because it seemed like everyone had a reservation! It was a little awkward sitting at a table by myself with so many parties waiting, but I am sure they were used to the wait since they all seemed like local regulars. In summary, amazing food!!! We came here on Valentine's day for second dinner. It being a dinner holiday, we waited about 15 minutes for a table but then 45 minutes for sushi. I don't know how many people are in the kitchen but for sushi, there's the sushi chef and his assistant for the entire restaurant plus all the V-day takeout. We didn't mind. With a minimum order, everyone gets miso soup and salad. The soup was satisfyingly hot and savory, the salad had a nice light ginger sesame type dressing instead of goopy mayo based. The sushi was great! It reminded me of a place I really enjoyed in Oakland where the cuts of fish weren't the prettiest but big, thick and fresh. Some of the fish was a bit on the cold side, usually you eat sushi at room temperature but I didn't mind it too much. For the 2 of us, about 3 orders of nigiri and 2 rolls, we clocked in at $20/person. I noticed that some tables ordered curry while others gobbled up noodle soup. A group of their regulars or friends came and sat at the sushi bar near closing. The chef gave them eggplant in garlic spicy sauce and I just kept hearing "oiishi, oiishi!" (delicious, delicious!). I think we'll have to order some hot food next time! Non food details: good for groups of 2-4. They can seat about up to 6 comfortably. However, the restaurant is small and it can get cramped/long wait if you come with a big group. It being V-day, the service was a bit flustered and overwhelmed. We could have gotten our seats and our bill earlier if they had the time. Overall, the service is friendly and they brought us everything we asked for. The restaurant itself is very cute and homey. It's located in the shopping center on the corner with Goodwill and there are entrances from either side of the street. To the man next to me, I didn't fart. Friends of mine love this place and go here often so I went with them after our crazy shopping at Costco. First stepping in, I thought, oh cool, has a very hole-in-the-wall Japanese ramen shop feel to it. The decorations were cool, the place feels authentic. The chef was actually Japanese unlike other sushi places I've been to. And the service was excellent. Although they recommended the ramen, I opted for the broiled salmon in terriyaki sauce because I've had ramen before exam every other week for a year now. No thanks. My friends ordered curry udon and egg with real crab meat on top of rice. Real crab meat, I was impressed. I love that they provide green tea (macha) for free!! Whoo hoo! Warmed me up on a cold night. Miso soup was typical of any Japanese restaurant. I heartily enjoyed the salad they provided with our meal. Everything came out super fast. Such friendly servers. I was happy for the portion size. ^_^ All the sauces on our dish I thought had a bit too much thickening reagents but overall, it was good. Wish I had sesame seed on my salmon though... It is cool place to go eat a variety of Japanese food but I would not personally be willing to drive here on my own if I was craving for sushi since the price is the same as any other places in Hillsboro. I've probably been here about 8 times. I usually get sashimi so I cannot speak for the other menu items. I really enjoy the food and the people are nice. If I haven't been there in a month or so, they still remember me and know what I am going to order. Business really picks up around lunch time so i try to get in early. read more

THIS REVIEW IS NOT ABOUT THEIR SUSHI* This place reminds me of living in Hawaii where I first enjoyed 'every day' Japanese cuisine. Yum. Always loved the eggplant. Didn't see it on the menu this last time I visited but that was not a worry - there is always something else to enjoy. Instead I had the TenDon and it was just what I was looking for - a comforting, generous portion of sauce-dipped then tempura battered prawns and vegetables over a big bowl of rice. The meal included hot green tea, a nice salad and decent miso soup for around $10 bucks. All in all, simple and well done. I appreciated the assortment of veggies that were cooked perfectly and 4 hearty prawns!. (It was more than I could eat if my dining partner hadn't helped me out). We sometimes have sushi, but more often than not, we order a couple of main dish entrees. I have enjoyed the ramen bowls, the katsu, the salmon and many other tasty 'cooked' dishes. Everything we've ordered was well seasoned and consistently prepared. The interior is tiny, I think about 7 tables and a 1/2 dozen seats at the bar and it's not fancy at all. However, the service is professional, pleasant and speedy. Though it can get REALLY PACKED sometimes - BEWARE at lunch hour on weekdays. * NOTE:I have enjoyed all of the sushi I have tried, but I am not a sushi expert, so I have not reviewed that large portion their menu.
