I was contemplating 2 or 3 stars until I got into the car and my stomach churned... seriously, I had to rush home to use the bathroom. I'm sure I don't have to go into details. I ordered the miso ramen and it was seriously the worst tasting ramen I've ever had. Noodles were over cooked, bbq pork slice (1 piece!) was dry and lacked flavor, I was suppose to have corn in my ramen but it came with bamboo shoot instead, and I HATE bamboo shoot. I can make instant ramen taste 100x better than what I just had. My fiance ordered the combination dinner with tonkatsu and the tonkatsu was the thinnest, driest piece of pork I've ever had. The sashimi that came with the combo dinner taste good as you're chewing but there was a weird after taste, the kind that you know you're going to have a stomach ache. The only good part about the dinner was the interesting salad dressing, the miso soup, and the tempura. But considering 4 out of 5 people in my group had a stomach after, we will not be coming back to this establishment, EVER. read more

A chirashi bowl for $15!! for serious?? I've been here a few times now and can say that I really like this place. The food is above-par and the prices are very reasonable. During my first attempt at 11am on a weekday, the restaurant was closed- even though the door was open & there were employees inside (weird)... I learned better and now only stop by for dinner. I've tried their chirashi bowl, a bunch of their ramens, their curry, their agadashi tofu, and their seaweed salad. My recommendation would be to go for the chirashi bowl. $15 is such a good deal for 12-13 different slices of sashami on a bed on rice. I remember the bowl even consisted of a piece of real crab meat, some seaweed, octopus, seabass, yellowtail, and all the other typical chirashi bowl items. It left me stuffed. Quality-wise, only half of my sashimi tasted fresh, the other half was decent &edible. I don't blame them though because it's hard to have all your ingredients fresh as the same time. Their ramen is pretty good. I don't think the flavoring of their broth is as good as Yuzu's, but Toshi's ramen does have more ingredients to it. The Gomoku was loaded with lots and lots of veggies (bamboo shoots even!) and gave me a massive food coma. Their Tenshin (Crab omelete) & Corn butter are probably the best though if you're going for flavor. The Corn butter ramen has that buttery taste without being excessively oily. The crab omelet is delicious! but it's basically a huge omelet on top of bowl of ramen soup. Everything else I've tried is AWW-right. Don't go for the seaweed salad , its price does not justify the small portion. read more

Absolutely love Toshis! My husband and I visit this place once a week for dinner, we can't stay away! Their fish is fresh fresh fresh, and their sushi rolls are simple but simply delicious. Highly recommend going there for sushi, especially salmon, yellowtail, red snapper, and octopus. Delicious sashimi, nigiri, chirasi, it's all good here. There were things that were cool about Toshi's and other kinda... meh. The folks working were nice but not very efficient. Warm towel to start is a very nice touch however. Sushi was passable but definitely not great or artistic in any sort of way. Seating was not very comfortable, neither was there much thought put into the decor. Sushi is good. As a transplant from Hawaii, it was disappointing to go to many other cookie-cutter sushi outlets around beaverton only to find low quality fish. My wife & i shared an beef udon, which she would normally leave the beef alone, though she actually enjoyed this. The noodles were good, much better than any prepackaged stuff you can buy at any grocery store. We arrived before the dinner rush so the service was intimate since the lack of customers made it easy for us to get attention. while the prices seemed to be higher than most other sushi restaurants we left very satisfied knowing that we didn't pay to eat crap-@$$ fish. Seating is very limited with somewhere about 15-20 tables (if memory serves me correct) so call ahead and make sure there is no wait. read more

I've been coming to Toshi for years and absolutely love everything about it. It's traditional, yes the owners are actually Japanese and the spot is typical - hole in the wall location with amazing food. I personally love the ramen, udon and most of all the sushi. I can almost always find fresh Toro on the menu and the Spicy Toro Roll is out of this world. It's a small place, so plan on waiting a bit. But if you're looking for authentic Japanese food and great sushi, it's so worth any wait. read more

I come here whenever I am at this side of town. This place is nostalgically old school when it comes to taste. This reminds me of "showa"or "early Heisei "era of Japan when I grew up there. Their Shio ramen is pretty good. Something about the food here that really gives me a good warm feeling inside. Food is kinda like how Japanese mom would cook. For a Japanese restaurant in Beaverton, this place is pretty good. It definitely maintains it's "hole-in-the-wall" status. It's really small and close on the inside, but that's the charm of places like this. The food is pretty good and my friends love the sushi here. Me, I find it okay. I like the taishoku instead, usually one with tempura shrimp. Their udon is pretty good too. There can be a line and you can be waiting for a while sometimes. Good, fresh sushi, big portions of everything and decent ramen menu. This place is usually at least 50% Japanese businessmen. That's a good sign. I think the whole staff is Japanese which is another good sign. Many of the Japanese restaurants in Portland seem to be owned by Koreans, which is not a bad thing, but you get a different approach to food. There are only about 7 tables and a bar so you may have to wait a bit if you come during peak lunch hours. Solid choice for Japanese food. read more

Really wonderful! I ordered to go pretty close to closing time.. food was ready to pick up fast. Got some nigiri pieces (my favorite is hamachi [yellowtail]) and a spicy tonkatsu ramen bowl. YUM!!! Fresh fish and the ramen as close to some of the best I've had as far as ramen goes. Very authentic. I think the noodles may have been fresh/hand rolled as well which is something I love to find at authentic places but not entirely sure here (see Toshi Ramen in Eugene, OR - hand rolled noodles everyday by Toshi himself! ) Service was very friendly and fast, the ambiance seems to be what I would call authentic. Toshi's is small and tucked in an unassuming suburban strip mall in Beaverton. There's not that many tables but always a wait. The service is good and the food even better. Toshi is unexpectedly fantastic. It is in a strip mall between a bar and a tattoo shop, so it really doesn't look like much from the outside. But the inside is bright and charming. It is however quite small, so you might have to wait, but it is worth it. You know it's a good sign when you go into a Japanese restaurant and you see lots of actual Japanese people eating there, speaking Japanese to the staff, and enjoying their dinner. And this is how it is every time we go here. Everything is good - we always leave here completely stuffed because we ordered too much. The nigiri pieces are quite large and I can barely eat them in one bite. Their noodles are very good. I *love* the tempura soba. I can taste it right now just thinking about it. If my husband orders sushi and I order noodles, we both end up getting miso soup and salad which is sort of weird since I don't need soup before my soup... but that's OK. :) Since we love the food, my only complaint is that when they get really busy, the service gets *really* slow. We waited over 10 minutes to be seated at a table that was clean and ready for us. The waitresses are very nice and aren't slacking - I think they just need another one during peak hours! The best sushi in Portland. I have been going here for over 10 years and it is a hidden gem. You will not be disappointed if your a sushi fan. You can get two rolls off the sushi menu and it comes with salad and miso soup. The normal dressing on the salad is the carrot, but you can ask for the miso dressing which is great! My favorites are the Rock n Roll, Spicy Tuna and golden California rolls. read more

We must have been there on an off night, a Saturday, based on all the good reviews. Only one other group eating. Service was fine. Underwhelming food and lacking flavor. I heard a microwave "beep" and commented on it to my family. When my chicken teriyaki came out I knew I wasn't mistaken. It was rubbery and obviously reheated in a microwave. Gets kinda full around this time, so expect a 20 min wait for a table. -great sake selection, even the house sake is tasty (a bit alcoholic tasting but sweet) -mapo ramen was amazing, the broth goes really well with the eggy, thick noodles here. (I actually prefer this style ramen noodle to the thin, blander noodles you get at Yuzu) i wish it had more ground pork in the soup. This is definitely a good ramen to order if you want to change it up. -butter corn ramen: doooo nottttt order this one! it is literally, water + ramen noodle + butter + corn. (and chasiu) all of the other times I've ordered this at other ramen restaurants, the corn+butter was combined with a soy or miso ramen base. This ramen left me particularly disappointed and teary eye-ed. (I'm sure the other ramens are very good, this was just a very unusual -for me- presentation) -fried rice came with the ramen as part of the combo, this one is pretty in line with the ramen house fried rices you see around. needed soy sauce. will be back to try the other ramen dishes! read more

Really 3.5 stars, rounded up. It was alright, but some of the fish (like the hamachi) was low-quality, re-frozen stuff, it was evident in the texture. Also, the rice balls in the nigiri were huge. The nigiri overall were very difficult to eat in one bite, which is how they're designed to be eaten. The rainbow roll I ordered had real crab, so that's a plus, but it seemed to have been rolled by an amateur. It was a falling-apart, hot-mess of a roll. The sunomono was good, though. It was a different style than we're used to, though, kind of a hybrid between sunomono and a wakame salad. And I was cranky about the whole mark-what-you-want-on-a-paper-slip routine. We sit at the bar because we want to actually *interact* with the chef, and order as we go, not so that we're forced order everything en masse like the folks at the tables would be at any other place. I've gotta give them credit for one thing - it's CHEAP! Dinner for 2 was only $47. And that was mostly sushi, not sides/cooked stuff. The location's far enough out that I wouldn't go out of my way to eat here again, but if it's convenient, sure. read more

In all honesty this review is based off of their service. The food was okay and a little pricey but the service itself is not worth the time and day. My friend and I walked in and saw seats at the bar open so of course I asked if it was okay to sit there. The waiter told me he would ask and 10min later we were finally seated. It took us another 30min to order. people that came after us were being attended to before us and it was frustrating to see it. Honestly, I think the only reason they finally took our order was because my friend said out loud let's leave. I've been a regular at Toshi's for as long as I remember. This place is very special to me. I consider it the first place that opened my eyes to actual authentic and amazing tasting sushi. It's been years, but, I will always remember how after the first time I had Toshi's the standard conveyor belt sushi joints that I had grown so accustomed to never tasted quite as good again. It seems a common downside to Toshi's can be the slow service but when my food is ready I always think to myself how worth the wait it was. I'm trying to branch out and try their non sushi items, but I cave and quickly opt for their extremely world changing sushi. A friend brought me out here and I was not disappointed. Aside from us both having delicious miso soup and salad, my friend had a rice bowl with shredded beef, onion, and egg; while I had two lunch special sushi rolls. Kamikaze was delicious and Spider Roll was good, although different from others I've had elsewhere. Service was excellent with a smile and place on a Tuesday at lunch. Will return! read more

Reading the reviews, I was worried that it'd be super busy so we came early. Middle of the week, doesn't seem to be a problem. This is a small place in a little strip mall. I'd say it seats maybe 40 max. The lady serving us was nice and helped me out with my choice. My daughter found what she wanted and ordered from the list. First comes the salad and miso soup. Personally, not a fan of miso, so stayed away from that broth for the Ramen. The salad had a real interesting dressing. Don't really know how to describe it, but I did like it. The Ramen, well that was pretty good. I got the spicy one with green onion and bbq pork. Huge bowl, but I'm not sure I'm going to be too full later. Also, a bit more pork would have been nice, but overall, for my first time, it was pretty good. My daughter had me try sushi for the first time in my life. California roll with crab and tempura shrimp roll. I tried both, came out alive, and am writing this. OK, it really was pretty good. Since I have no frame of reference, she told me that they were pretty good quality, however poorly made as they fell apart a bit. Kind of made laugh when my first one fell in to the soy sauce and broke apart. Anyway, my first experience was good, and I'd be ready to try it again. Great ramen....very authentic. Wished they had add-ins, which would be icing on the cake. Good broth and reasonably priced. I'm still leaning towards Yuzu in Beaverton in terms of taste. However, big fail on sushi. The rice was over seasoned and worst of all, mushy. You are not Asian if you can't make rice. Sashimi were big portions and good quality. My recommendation....go there for ramen, but not sushi. The funny part is all the Asian customers were eating ramen and the rest of the gaijins were eating sushi. But, I always try sushi at a Japanese restaurant when it's my first time. There are plenty of better Japanese restaurants. read more
