This spot is takeout only, so just be prepared for that! I got the combo with teriyaki beef and chicken, and it came with a mound of rice, teriyaki sauce, and cabbage slaw on the side. The teriyaki itself was perfection - the chicken was tender, juicy, and so well marinated with the perfect amount of char while the beef was (surprisingly) even better! It was so tender and flavorful and dipping both meats into the teriyaki sauce was scrumptious. Their sauce is absolutely delicicous and I love pouring a bit over the rice for a yummy bite. The OG teriyaki joint, it's in my top 2 along with Ta Joia. All they do is chicken (and katsu) and beef teriyaki. That's it. And that's all they need yall. They stopped serving their spicy chicken, which is a damn shame, but you can still ask for spicy sauce on da side. Typically i just got their chicken/beef combo anyways for a reasonable $15. We originally visited Toshi's Teriyaki Grill for an early dinner, hoping for a taste of some of Seattle's original teriyaki. Unfortunately when we stepped in, we were quoted a 40+ minute wait for walk up orders. We decided to go elsewhere try again later. A couple of days later, we came back for lunch and found everything to be way easier and faster. I called in the order and in the ten minutes it took to drive over, the food was ready. Toshio's Original Chicken ($13) - Very tender chicken with a slight smoky char, some small portions singed and crisp from all the heat. All pieces are very similar in texture, and very consistent in general. The chicken is light on the seasonings, leaving you to douse the chicken with terkiyaki sauce as you like. It's quite enjoyable on its own own to be honest. The rice is a perfectly cooked medium grain with a nice chew. You can feel each individual grain on the tongue. The small cup of sauce is great - sweet and savory, with a bit of soy flavor and a small bit of tanginess. Simple ingredients, delicious results. The only disappointment is the sad cup of pre-made commercial cole slaw on the side. Red-Hot Spicy Chicken ($14) - Not much to say about this. Slightly spicy with a peppery vegetal taste. I wouldn't say this is "Red-Hot" at all - instead, it's just a pleasant mild heat. Otherwise, it's pretty similar to the original chicken. I actually prefer the original, so I'm not sure this is worth the $1 upcharge! Toshi's is only the third Seattle-style Teriyaki place I've visited, but it's by far the best. If you want some teriyaki, it will probably be difficult to find better. Just be aware that you'll need to call ahead for dinner orders. I came in and ordered and food took about 20 minutes to prepare - note that they are take out only so maybe stop by the froyo shop next door for a snack! Staff was super friendly and food was ready on time. I got the chicken and beef combo and it was delicious. It came with one sauce which was on the more watery side but very delicious. We've gotten takeout from here a few times for dinner. The menu is basic but has enough options if you're craving teriyaki. The food has always been ready quickly and is still hot when we get it home. I've had the chicken teriyaki and it's really tasty. It's also a good sized portion for the price (which is very reasonable). My husband has also enjoyed his meals from here. It's one of the better teriyaki places in the area. read more

Beef is not your typical, these look like steak pieces and it was tender. Chicken teriyaki was plump and juicy. Sauce is on the side. Cole slaw instead of regular salad and it was refreshing. Already exceeded my expectations 2nd visit: spicy chicken and katsu combo (not on menu) and a beef bowl. The katsu was so crispy yet juicy and plump. The spicy chicken was also plump and juicy. I prefer the regular teriyaki over spicy though. The beef was just as good as before. It's really hard to describe how good these dishes are so you just have to come and check them out!!!!! They are busy and they make things to order. You can call in your order if you don't want to wait. We came right when they open and it takes about 10 minutes for food to be ready. I have to admit, I'm a little disappointed. I'm a huge fan of @KenjiLopezAlt and he has been posting about his favorite teriyaki restaurants. I have always been a fan of Toshi's since the 90s. I went there today and although the chicken was ok, it was a little dry. The salad that I'm used to getting was just cold slaw instead of the lettuce with that delicious sweet, salty, sour dressing. The place I went to didn't have any indoor seating, it was take out only. Because I called my order ahead it was ready when I got there. I'm not going to discount all Toshi spots but I don't think I'll go back to the one in Mill Creek. read more

This teriyaki chicken and rice here is excellent. What you find here is definitely not the dried out and reheated chicken jerky smothered in brown cornstarch and sugar syrup concoction you find in most food court malls. Oh no. This is where Seattle's obsession with chicken teriyaki was introduced. The chicken was smoky, juicy and tender and freshly made. This was not sitting around and reheated. The flavor of the meat was well balanced with just enough marinade and seasoning. The sauce was not goopy or sickly sweet but tasted fresh and balanced. The dish came with cole slaw and fluffy rice. The portion size was definitely decent as I must have received at least two big thighs. This is a true example of simple food prepared really well. You order at the counter and can hear Toshi working his magic behind the wall where the kitchen is located. There was no where to sit and eat so after a 10 minute wait I received my food and took it to go. The woman that took my order was very sweet. 10 Ounce Beef Steak $13.25: I've had teriyaki at 2 other places in Seattle, and don't recall being that impressed. I wanted to try this location that's operated by THE Toshi himself, and was not disappointed. We came in on a Tuesday night and ordered in store, and were quoted 20 minutes for our 4 meals to be prepped. Actual prep time was 15 minutes. We had to drive 20 minutes before we could dive into the food, and it was still warm and so tender. It comes with one sauce but I did order extra sauce ($0.25 each) because I can't risk not having enough. I did find the sauce too salty for my liking, but honestly found the beef pretty good on its own. However, when it cooled down too much, it became too chewy for me, so this is best eaten when fresh. I always prefer beef over chicken, but I did try some chicken from my partner's Chicken and Beef Combo $13. It was pretty good! I liked that it was thin slices, and there was some charcoal grilled flavor that I didn't have with the beef. I might spring for this next time! ***** My Star Ratings: 1 Star - Terrible. This is literally where they INVENTED seattle teriyaki! Toshi is still slinging his original recipe at the grill with his lovely lady. Absoltuely no frills place, infinitely humble, you'd never know a living legend was here still making fantastic little teriyaki plates. Too often the pioneer falls behind the competition, but this place still holds its own against the evolution of teriyaki. If I had to characterize the profile here, it goes for more char flavor than normal teriyaki, and I highly reocmmend the beef that's the best I've had at teriyaki. They use an incredibly tender cut that is so flavorful. While I'm usually a chicken guy, I can't help but crave the beef here the most for its uniqueness. Glad we made the trek over to Mill Creek today despite passing about 400 other teriyaki joints along the way. We got the original chicken, gyoza and chicken bowl. Of course it was great. The chicken was cooked perfectly. The sauce was the best balance of sweetness and tartness. The gyoza was packed and crispy. The rice was freshly cooked. Totally met expectations. It's cool to have the o.g. version of something we've had a thousand times elsewhere. Makes us re-think the burnt edges, goopy sauce and dry, dry rice usually accompanying these orders. Staff is not particularly friendly, no public bathroom, weird hours, and nowhere to eat BUT this may be the best teriyaki ever!!! We got katsu, gyoza and chicken teriyaki for about $33. I don't know if we'd do the katsu again as they didn't provide the typical sauce but the chicken teriyaki was on point. My 8.5 year old called the gyoza his favorite. I am hoping it was an off day and that in the future it would be better, so I am holding out hope I can update this in the future. I will say if you are looking to get Teriyaki you have to call ahead. I popped in one day thinking I could just order and wait for a single meal since I was next door ordering gyros and my kid wanted teriyaki - I was laughed at. She said an hour minimum wait. The inside is just for pickup and drop off so don't go thinking you'll dine in. I made sure to call ahead when I did decide to order, it was ready at pickup and the flavor was mid at best. I got the chicken beef combo to try both and was not thrilled. I've had teriyaki at many places, even other Toshi's, which was better which is why I feel like I hit a bad day. read more

If you want to understand the wonders of teriyaki, start here. This is where the master and creator, Toshi Kasahara, still plies the grill. Toshi Kasahara opened the original Toshi's Teriyaki in Lower Queen Anne in Seattle back in 1976. That was the city's first teriyaki restaurant, and Toshi's gift to the culinary world lives on..usually in a poor imitation to his masterful food, but it lives on. No poor imitations here. Toshi's Teriyaki Grill is the real thing made by the real Toshi himself (at least at this location). Toshi's chicken is moist and succulent. The teriyaki sauce is a little thin (but not watery) and not as sweet as some imitations. It's perfection. I asked Toshi why his chicken is so amazingly moist and flavorful, while most teriyaki joints serve a much dryer and less flavorful version. He said the secrets were two. Not too high of a heat and not pre-cooking then just finishing on order or getting in a hurry with the cooking. (Your order at Toshi's will take a few minutes to get--be patient. It's worth the wait.) This is what all teriyaki should be. It is heaven. Oh, and the slaw is equally divine as the chicken. You won't find many options on the menu, and that is as it should be. Toshi knows what he does well, and that is what he offers. Accept it and be happy. And don't expect much from the facility. It's tiny and hard to find. There are only a few tables, and those are crammed in an extremely small space. There's a wall with an open end separating the tiny kitchen from the even tinnier dining area. And behind that wall is Toshi (probably--he was there the day I was there) working his magic at the grill. This is the temple of teriyaki, and Seattle-style teriyaki's creator is in the house. Yes I have eaten here been awhile about three miles away. Kinda hit and miss ordered a typical chicken yakisoba. I did not have any just had the salad that came with the order which I love because of the salad dressing I love it except for today. My wife complained the yakisoba had no taste. How often can you say that your meal was prepared by the person who invented a food category? Toshi Kasahara, the one who started chicken teriyaki, serves up delicious and affordable food at this location. I live in downtown Seattle and don't come up this far north very often - but will have to now. How this place has fewer than 100 reviews is beyond me. My brother ordered the Original Chicken Teriyaki. I ordered the spicy version and we split. Each entree comes with rice and a side of cole slaw. We also got two bottled waters. Total came out to $22 including tax. The smell of grilled chicken at a picnic hits you immediately after opening the styrofoam lid. Good sign, and the taste does not disappoint. The chicken is perfectly cooked: succulent, slightly charred, and a hot temperature that lasts as you eat. The chicken is marinated in-house before its cooked and could be eaten without additional condiments, but I lightly drizzled some extra sauce to dial up the stickiness, texture, and sweetness. The warm rice is an underrated aspect of the meal. The cole slaw is a bit more straightforward and less praiseworthy but balances the food out. My only critique is that the spicy chicken is - well - not that spicy. But I'm a bit of a chili-head and have accepted the fact that the level of heat I look for caters to a small minority of patrons, especially here in the States. The portions are satisfying for the average 'big eater'. The box is loaded with food. And importantly: there is no skimping on meat -- the Asian in me who stacks my plate with sushi and crab legs at a buffet even when I'm full just to get my money's worth appreciates this! One side of the box has the rice and cole slaw, and the other half is layered with chicken. How many places still exist where you can get top notch food in substantial portions for $10 or less? (not a rhetorical question... if you know of any in Seattle, DM me!!) At the end of the day, it's a very familiar teriyaki dish - no curveball or secret recipe. What makes this stand out however is its sublime execution. The meal comes together so well; nothing is forced and everything tastes like it should. Looking forward to visiting again and sampling other popular items on the menu, such as their beef and chicken katsu. I also want to address a few themes I observed from the rare less than 5-star reviews: (1) SPACE. The place is essentially takeout only. Given quarantine guidelines, this shouldn't phase anybody. That said, even post-covid I wouldn't bring a family or large group of friends to eat at the restaurant. Not the right venue for that. Be ready to eat in the car, outside on a bench, or take back home or to a nearby park. (2) WAIT TIME. Some complain about the 10 min wait time. I guess it's true: you really can't please them all. The man in the kitchen is preparing fresh, non-frozen, made-to-order food... it may take longer to prepare than lesser teriyaki shops because he cooks at a lower heat to keep the chicken from getting too dry. For just 5 extra minutes of my time, I'll take that trade-off any day. (apparently you can also call ahead if you're time-strapped) (3) MENU. This place specializes in teriyaki. It's not a one stop shop for all Asian food. If you're coming for teriyaki, there's about 7 or 8 different things to order - plenty of variety! When we visited Seattle, we wanted to check out some of the original places. That Chinese place where Bruce Lee and Anthony Bourdain ate at as well as some others on our list. After reading about the history of teriyaki in Seattle, we had to try Toshi's Teriyaki Grill. Ironically we decided to visit Toshi's the same day we drove to Seattle from Portland. So yes, we drove over 3 hours for some Teriyaki steak and chicken. I have had plenty of teriyaki in my life and have made the sauce myself plenty of times. I am pleased to say that this was a very good meal! We ordered the steak and chicken combination which comes with rice and some slaw. Very impressed with how much meat came with this meal. In fact there was more meat than rice. I also loved that the meat was cooked over a charcoal grill. Not sure how he does this in a little location inside a strip mall but you can taste the char on the meat and see the grill marks. The teriyaki sauce is as good as I have ever had. I enjoyed the sauce with my rice. Both the steak and chicken were cooked perfectly. The steak to a nice medium rare with just a hint of pink while the chicken was not overcooked at all and was still tender and flavorful. The whole meal costs about $12.00. That's a steal for the amount of meat in that dish and at that quality, could be selling for $15.00 or more. Really solid meal. Do yourself a favor and make the quick trip up from Seattle or drive up from Portland. At least we plan to stay for a few days. My mom still lives in MC and this was her go-to for beef and chicken terri, but she was so disappointed the other day when she got her food. Excellent quality food. I had the beef steak teriyaki and it was juicy and delicious, with huge sliced beef pieces over rice. This isn't the thin sliced over cooked beef you see in most teriyaki stores, it's much better, like your family made it. This is a clean business and has great service with a friendly staff.
