OH MY GODDDD. I might as well authorize my work to put my direct deposit directly here because goddamn I eat at Toss on a weekly basis and for GOOD REASON. They recently remodeled their back seating area - it's kind of an interesting, stadium style seating where you can sit on three different levels. I've never sat there since to be honest it looks kind of awkward, but hey, if it lets more people eat at this amazing place, so be it. Toss offers mix-and-match noodles and also rice dishes, with a variety of sauces, proteins, and noodle types, leaving you with seemingly endless combinations of tasty and huge bowls of noodles. Oh yes - the portions are enormous. I often end up only being able to eat half of a bowl and taking the rest to go. Toss' don't keep that well after a few days, though, so I'd definitely recommend eating them the next day for lunch! My go-to is the Hokkien style noodles with chicken, and I ask for the Thai spicy sauce and the Japanese sweet and sour sauce mixed. They're more than happy to blend two sauces for you if you ask, something I discovered after my 7th or 8th time eating here. My friends usually get their peanut sauce with tofu and glass noodles, which are also incredibly tasty. Prices are incredibly reasonable - $10 for a bowl! They also offer takeout boxes of jasmine rice for ~$2, in addition to beers and another drinks. Service has always been prompt and friendly - they're super quick to clean your table after people are done eating, and despite how popular this place is, I've never had to wait to find a seat after getting my food. Toss is where it's at for some yummy, flavorful noodles made with fresh ingredients!! My roommates and I would come here at least once a month during our time at Cal. A Berkeley food staple! It is a cute lil spot in a nice location with fun decor and an ambiance that meets the eye. Time and time again, their food is consistently good and service is prompt and friendly. I also love how conveniently everything is set up at the station providing water, napkins, chopsticks and to-go boxes for whatever a guest's needs may be. At first I would always get the Hokkien Noodles with with Thai sauce and then I fell in love even more with the Thai + Japanese sauce mixed together with the noodles. Toss in some fresh veggies and tofu (or whatever preferred protein) and call it a day. Cant go wrong!!! I've also tried the fried rice and Tom Yum.. Both also really great options. I'm a HUGE fan of Toss. My first time here was January 2015 and I was amazed by the flavor of the sauce and the variety of noodles (there are just five options, but to me this seemed like a lot). Generally I've found that the hokkien noodles are most popular, but I sometimes find myself ordering the flat rice noodles (when I want something more pad see ew-esque). I've always ordered chicken with my dishes here so I can't speak to the other options, but the chicken quality has always been wonderful from my experience. It doesn't take a ridiculous amount of time for the food to come out and considering the large volume of students that frequent Toss for meals, this is rather impressive. They recently replaced a long table towards the right back part of the shop with these bleacher-like seats to accommodate more people which I find pretty awkward as spacing is concerned, and I'm not sure if this is something that is working to solve the problem of a lack of space. Otherwise, I only have great things to say about Toss. As mentioned in another review I've written, I try not to eat out very much, and I REALLY try not to trek beyond Southside Berkeley, but Toss satisfies me to the point of having me take the 51B all the way downtown. Also, the Thai iced tea is VERY good. I order it with coconut milk, as I am lactose intolerant, and I believe that this gives it some more flavor--perhaps some sweetness--that I really appreciate. 3.5 stars. This place is a great spot for noodle lovers, and the service is quick too. The way this works is you customize your own dish! First, you choose your base such as noodles or rice. Then, you pick your flavor. Do you want stir fry, soup, or curry? And finally... protein! I ordered hokkien noodles with chicken in the spicy thai sauce because I love spicy way too much. This always seems to hit the spot when you are craving for some solid Asian noodles. Been here quite a few times over the past 3 years and it's been pretty solid. I've always gotten the Hossein noodles with Thai Sauce and Chicken. It's both sweet, a little bit spicy, and savory. I wish there was a little bit less sweetness but I do have to say overall the noodles were pretty tasty. The noodles were pretty good but I'd say the typical Thai restaurant serves better noodles than Toss on average. It's hard to describe but I'd say that Toss' noodles are cooked similar to a typical "chow mein" type of noodle if that makes sense. read more

My go-to order here is the Hokkien noodles with Malay (Peanut) Sauce and Beef, and it hasn't disappointed me yet! I love the mildly sweet creaminess of the sauce coupled with the buttery chewiness of the Hokkien noodles. The sliced broccolini adds yet another texture to each bite, balancing out the oiliness of the rest of the dish. It's a big portion for what you're paying, and it is delicious. I do wish they gave a bigger portion of the beef, though. Sometimes they are a bit too efficient with their service, however. During peak hours, they constantly watch for you to finish eating, and promptly bus your table. This is fine, but they seem to discourage people from finishing conversations if they finish the food first -- I was told during a previous visit to make room for another party. Wow, I did not have high expectations from this modern looking hole-in-the-wall. I was definitely surprised for the better. There was so much flavor in both of the dishes I tried. I got the Japanese style noodles and my friend got the pad see ew. The portions were very large but I'd still recommend against splitting because these noodles are so good you might eat more than you anticipate! The boxes to-go and I believe all to-go materials are extra (to my memory it was 10 cents per box/bag). You order at the front and then there are benches and tables creatively configured around the restaurant. Noodle bar with asian inspired flavors. I've been here a handful of times for dinner and I've always made my own noodles with their simple menu, but they do have soups and rice dishes. For the amount of food, I think this place is good value! I normally take a bit of leftovers to-go if I eat the dish by myself. The last time I visited was around 9:30 on a Friday night. It wasn't too busy, but many tables were occupied. We asked for our food to go because we wanted to watch a movie at 9:55! Luckily the food came out after 10-15 minutes, but I think it only took a while because we got the wrong table number. My friend and I shared a Malay Hokkien Noodle Bowl with combination of prawns and tofu. It was tasty! They gave about 6 prawns, so maybe we should have got a different protein choice. I think the new seating arrangement they have in the corner is really interesting because they are sort of like wooden bleachers? I probably wouldn't sit there because I can only think about sitting down where some people walked all over with their shoes.. good thing there are a lot more options for seating! read more

I went with a friend who has a gluten intolerance, so has limited ability to eat Asian food (due to the soy sauce use), but they were able to accommodate her needs! I ended up ordering the Hokkien noodle, wok toss, with Chinese sauce and tofu. I also decided to try one of their appetizers of a pork skewer. My friend got a rice plate with pork and Chinese sauce. A 5/5 review must hit all the right aspects. Price, Service, Taste, Presentation, and Would You Order Again? Definitely not overpriced, I think Toss Noodle Bar gave you a sufficient amount of food with your order. The service was a bit of a hybrid of self-serve, by getting your own water, napkins, and seating, but the food was delivered quickly to your table. Taste was definitely good! I think because this was a largely acclaimed must-eat in Berkeley, I was expecting more. No doubt it was yummy, but nothing over the top "to die for" food...The wok toss was great, but I think you can skip out on the pork skewer. It did not impress me as much as I thought it was going to. Overall presentation was nice, nothing out of this world, but still pleasant to look at. I would definitely recommend and order again. So good! I had a friend who ate here 80 times...in one semester! Which, I think, must have been every night. Some of us weren't quite as fanatical then but I'm slowly becoming more and more of a convert. Every time I'm hungry and near Toss, I'll stop in and have a hearty portion of rice or noodles. The menu makes it very simple to decide what you want, the pricing is fair, the flavours are excellent and the portions are generous. It's even got a well laid out "fast casual" interior, friendly staff and alcoholic beverages to boot. Worth checking out. read more

I have always walked past this place and never actually gone in. I came here with my club for a social and I was pleasantly surprised by how tasty and savory the food was. I ordered the Chinese noodle with chicken and it was amazing! 10/10 When you first walk in, walk all the way down to the cashier and order your food first. After ordering your food, they will hand you a number card for your table and bring you your food when it's ready. I personally like this style of ordering first and then eating because you can enjoy talking with your friends without worrying about paying later. Also, this helps big parties pay separately since you can all order individually. As for ambience, it is a great place to hang out and just talk with your friends. They have tvs on the wall so you can come in and watch basketball games with your friends while eating. It is a casual environment and there is a bathroom in the back. read more

After reading all the great reviews about this place. I decided to give it a try. One thing lead to another and I ended coming here three days in a row. It was a bit confusing at first, but after the first time things got easier. It's kind of like build your own bowl. You choose a noodle/rice... then a sauce...then a protein.. and that's it! My favorite is the Hokeian (sp?) noodles with the Chinese sauce and beef. But I've tried the other noodles and sauce as well and they were all delicious. The only thing I didn't like was that they put way too much bean sprouts in the dish. Overall: I definitely would recommend this place! read more

After eating at Toss now for about 2 years as my go to Berkeley noodle place, I'm upping the stars from 4 to 5. Instead of ordering the hokkien noodles with Thai sauce and tofu, I've since learned I can combine 2 sauces so now I order the Thai and the Japanese sauces so there's a kick of heat while also a bit of sweetness. The noodles still come with some broccoli, bok choy, very few onions, red bell peppers, and carrots slivers. The cashiers always ask if it's okay for there to be egg in your dish. The meal comes out hot and fast. I can still walk there from the north side of campus, eat, and be back in an hour. The tables are clean and people are normally in and out so you can normally find a seat within a few minutes during busier periods. Between 11:30 am and 12:30 pm, it gets a bit busy because of all the Berkeley High students but they generally take the food to go so it's never really been a problem. They also offer chilled flavored water that you can dispense into small mason jars. Their Thai ice tea is well made and I enjoy ordering it to go from time to time. I don't think there's been anyone I've brought here that hasn't found something that they could eat and that they liked. So Toss, you've moved to 5 stars. A while ago, Toss Noodle Bar showed up on Yelp East Bay's Instagram page and I was fascinated by that beautiful noodle lifting shot. You know, the one where there's noodles hanging off a pair of chopsticks ready to be eaten? Yes, that one. When I first read that Toss is a customizable noodle place, I immediately thought it was like Chipotle where I can see the employees scoop sauce and place ingredients into a bowl, but sadly, you just order at a counter and take a number to a table of your choice. I ordered the hokkien noodles with Thai/Malay sauce with combination protein. Side note: employees told me I can combine Thai and any other sauce available on the menu, but you should double check when ordering. If I was a student, I would have definitely given this place 4 stars for the generous amount of food and taste. But I feel that even as a "fast food" place, Toss should still pay attention to its food. For example, the broccoli I had was slightly undercooked. The tofu was in a huge chunk and could have been chopped into smaller pieces. Vegetables in general were not consistently cut (some big and some small) which made for awkward eating. I appreciate how quick the meal came to the table, but I would also appreciate more attention to the food.
