I was sad that I didn't really get to 'toss' the noodle as the name suggested. I was expecting a noodle bar, you add the ingredients and the noodles yourself, and you get to be your own chef and 'toss' the noodle around in a bowl or something. But despite that, it's a pretty decent and affordable place! I got the Malay and Chinese sauce, hokkien, and beef, and oh boy it tasted good. There are a lot of options that you can pick. 6 different kinds of noodles (or rice - 4 kinds), and you get to pick the sauces (9 kinds, and you can do a combo wombo - pick 2 and mix them together), and 6 kinds of proteins. I'm not a mathematician but that's more variety than my wardrobe. Service is attentive, quick, good quantity. I'm just surprised that there is not a line out the door. read more

The Honest Truth: 3.5 Stars. Food is decent. It's got the same appeal as yogurtland, or chipotle. Choose your noodle, choose your sauce, choose your meat and they'll cook it up from you. Good selection, but nothing is made to be amazing or super special. About $8 for a dish. Vibe is nice. The Details: The appeal is that you get to make whatever dish you want. The only downside to that is that it limits the flavor combinations and prevents any dish from being unique and really really great. If all the sauces have to go with all the noodles that have to go with all the meats, there are no unique combinations and everything can turn out tasting very similar. With that being said, this place isn't bad! The taste is decent and the noodles are good as well (not hand-pulled quality though). It's good for indecisive friends that don't know what they want to eat, but if I wanted thai noodles, I would probably go to a thai place (and the same with other styles of noodles) But hey, if you can't make up your mind, come here and make your own creation! read more

I can't tell you how many times Toss has saved my life! While in college at Cal, I was probably here once or twice a week. Whether I was picking up food to-go or on a lunch or dinner date, Toss never disappointed! I like to describe it to people as a kind of chipotle style ordering system, except instead of rice for your burrito bowl you are choosing noodles. You can also choose your protein and then your sauce or broth. I'm loyal to my spinach noodle, chicken and thai sauce combo BUT i like to switch it up and get the malay peanut sauce or even get both the thai & peanut together. Mix that up in their big bowl with some chili sauce and you are set! I've never actually ordered anything else, because I'm a die hard for my combo but I've tried other things my friends have ordered. The fried rice and the clear noodles in broth are also good! Get yourself a thai tea in a cute little mason jar for an extra $2 and you're in heaven. I love Toss because it's super quick, affordable and hits the spot every time. I arrived here on a thursday night around 7:45 with two others. It was busy but not crowded. As everyone has pointed out, you build your own dish by choosing the kind of noodles or rice, the style and sauce, and then tofu/pork/seafood/etc. I ordered thin rice noodles with spicy Thai sauce and tofu. They warned me that there will be egg in the dish, and that they will use fish sauce. Neither is a problem for me. We also ordered some calamari and prawn chips. The staff is very friendly and helpful. Our food arrived very quickly and hot. My dish was delicious and the veggies and tofu properly cooked. I'd say it was medium spicy; perhaps the next time I will ask them to make it spicier. You get a lot of food for not much money - I had plenty left over for next day's lunch even though I arrived very hungry. The decor is simple and functional and the bathroom was clean. Toss has one of those sleek new age modern menus where there's 3 simple steps to ordering and BAM! You're done! Too bad it took me forever to figure out what I wanted. There's just so many options! You can get noodles, steamed rice, or fried rice, and there are six different types of noodles alone. You can get that wok-tossed or in a soup or in a curry. You can get tofu or chicken or pork or beef or shrimp. Or you can just scrap the whole three-step process and just get fried squid or samosas or salads!! I chose hokkien noodles with malay (peanut based) and tofu because I'm boring and it sounded safe and delicious. WHICH IT WAS. Although I'm pretty sure you can try any combination and it'll all taste pretty good. Next time - grass noodles, I'm looking atcha. The interior's nice & clean. Super sleek & modern, very casual. Hella hungry after class - decided to drop by TOSS since it was on the way home. To go'ed a Hokkien noodle with japanese sauce and chicken. It came in a nice box and it was ready in about 5 minutes! You can mix and match a different type of noodle with sauce, curry, etc. and a choice of protein for an affordable price. The employees were extremely sincere and helpful in showing you how the menu works. I love love love noodles, and the meal I had was absolutely delicious. Love the concept of picking what noodles, sauce (or soup or curry - whatever floats your boat), and protein go into your dish. After reading the reviews about generous portions, I was expecting a mountain-sized amount but sadly, the noodles barely filled up half the white bowl. Even though the bowl itself was ginormous in its own right, anyone with a stomach bigger than a golf ball can finish the noodles in one sitting. I went with the stir-fry Hokkien noodles with spicy Thai sauce and chicken, but it wasn't anything amazing: if you can imagine thick chow mein noodles cooked with pad thai seasoning, you'll know exactly what I had for dinner tonight. $8 dishes are definitely within a student's budget, but you would be able to get chow mein or pad thai for much less. Still, for Toss' customization, I would recommend coming here if you have a group of friends who can't agree what kind of cuisine to try. Tip: there's a glass box showing what all of the noodles look like up front with the cashier, so that you won't be too confused when you read "spinach noodles" or "grass noodles" on the menu. Bravo!!! Yum yum!! Trés bien! This place is delicious!! I came here last night (a Friday around 7:30 pm) for dinner with my boyfriend. Since this place just opened a week ago, there wasn't a lot of people. Hopefully more people will discover this new gem on Shattuck that replaced Pintoh. When you first walk in, you walk to the hostess and order (and pay first). There's three choices to customize your noodle experience! 1. You pick the kind of noodle you want. There's thick, thin, spinach, hokkien, and rice noodles among others. 2. You pick the kind of sauce or soup you want. There's stir-fry, curry, and soup! Stir fry consists of options like Thai sauce (kind of spicy but the perfect amount), Japanese (sweet and sour) and some others! There's 2 or 3 curry options (my boyfriend got the Laksa orange curry which was surprisingly really good!!! And I never like curry -- so that's saying something!) 3. You pick what to mix in it. They offer chicken, beef, prawns, tofu, and combination!! I ordered the hokkien noodle with tofu, and it was simply D-E-L-I-C-I-O-U-S!!! So. Good!! The Thai curry sauce I picked was a little spicy, but just the right amount to be addictively good. There was also a perfect amount of veggies (broccoli, asparagus, and Chinese broccoli I think) stir-fryed in. I didn't know what "hokkien" noodles were (in fact I'm still not sure where the name comes from) but its a good noodle that's on the thicker side, perfect for stir frying. It's comparable to noodles you eat in chow mien. As I mentioned above, my boyfriend got the Laksa curry with spinach noodles (photo uploaded), which was a delicious sweet curry with just the right amount of coconut taste. I usually dont like Thai curries at all but this one was scrumptious. The spinach noodle had the perfect chewiness and the soup was good. Oh and we also ordered the chicken lettuce wraps (there's a special name but can't remember what it is), which were decent. I've had better but it wasn't bad. I think water chestnuts and more sauce would've been a good addition to the chicken that was served with the wraps. Love the decor and service! Staff was super friendly, and I love that they have a self-serve station with utensils, plates, and water cups! This is a make-your-own-noodle dish place, where you can choose from 5 types of noodles, multiple sauces/soup, and different types of meat. I made a dish with hokkien noodles, malay peanut sauce, and chicken. The dish was $8 plus tax, but everything is freshly made and the portion was pretty big. Unfortunately, my dish was underwhelming. I usually update my reviews for places that deserve it, but ironically I've updated my review for Toss for the opposite reason... 3 years ago when I was a freshman at Cal, I fell in love with Toss. I thought it was such a cool concept that you can create your own dish. Since I loved pad Thai and Thai food I always made the peanut sauce hokkien and I never ever found it a miss. 2 years later I've found a pretty unfortunate distaste for toss. Sorry, I know everyone is entitled to his/her opinion, but I'd rather be honest about why I find this place to suffer from overhype... The good: Toss is hella efficient. If I need to make the Bart to a warriors game and I only have 20 min, this place is great, even when it's busy... The soups they have are also not bad. Their Tom yum soup is plentiful and will get you full... The bad: Besides their noodle soups, everything else has gone down hill. Why? It might just be my appetite, but if I'm paying 8-10$ for food, I should be somewhat full right? That's how I felt when I first tried toss. But now whenever I get a rice dish or a noodle dish, you get a big bowl but when you stare into it, it's barely 1/3 full. I guess that's why I like their efficiency- they give you nothing... In addition, most of the items on their menu are actually just not justified by the price. I guess I'm just a bit too sophisticated with my food, but a lot of their items are not that hard to make. If you're charging 9$ please be a bit more original and/give more portions? TBH If I wanted mediocre quality food that's filling, there's Chipotle or if I want higher quality that's filling, there's urban turban... Or I can cook it. I know this is more of a rant, but it irks me when I see this place so severely overhyped. Hella college and high school students flock here. Is the food authentic? No. Is the food unique? Not really. Is the food still great? Strangely, yes. As an Asian girl who loves her authentic Asian food, I feel a weird sense of betraying my roots by liking this place so much, but what can I say? It tastes good, so I can't complain. I usually get Hokkien noodles, with both the Malay and Thai sauce (because I'm indecisive, and they're accommodating to doing half half sauces), plus tofu or chicken, depending on my mood. I love that there's plenty of stir-fried vegetables too, so I don't feel like I'm being super unhealthy. Pretty simple stuff, but it's tasty for an affordable price. The Laksa is a little too unauthentic for me and is too lacking in spice and flavor compared to the real thing, so I wouldn't recommend it. My advice is to stick to the wok-tossed noodles, and you'll leave happy. read more

It started off great at Toss. The ambience was casual but still modern. The menu was easy to read and there wasn't TOO much on the menu. I did have a hard time deciding what I wanted but that was because there were so many combinations you could put together. You first start by choosing your noodles, then broth, and finally the meats/veggies. I decided to go with the Hokkien noodles, which are a little thicker than ramen noodles, with the thai stir fry along with the combination (included all the meats and veggies). My cousins and I also ordered 2 chicken skewers with peanut sauce on it and 1 pork skewers. The noodles came out first and it was AMAZING! There was a ton of flavors packed into those noodles and the meats were cooked perfectly. The little bits of egg in the stir fry made it even more pleasing! I also ordered the thai tea, which is a must! The reason why I rated it two stars was because of the chicken skewers. Half way into the chicken, I noticed a pink liquid coming out and upon further inspection I noticed that the middle of the chicken was pink and concluded that the chicken was raw. After telling the waitress this she said "is it too raw for you?" What kind of question is that?! Raw chicken is RAW CHICKEN. If you don't cook the chicken through you can get someone very sick. Went Sunday around 5:30 PM before seeing movie at the Shattuck Theater. So surprised....expected it to be uncrouded on a Sunday eve. Nope, full of mostly students(I'm assuming they were students) chowing down, talking, laughing and generally having a good time. It's a walk up, order, sit down and they bring your order out pretty quickly. I ordered the Hokien noodles with a mix of Thai (a bit spicy) and Malay (peanut) sauces with pork, son ordered Hokkien noodles with the Chinese (soy based) sauce and combination protein. Both were delicious.....though mine was a bit betterWith the bit of spiciness! Neither one had much meat but it was enough....theses are 'noodle' bowls after all. Brand new noodle house in Berkeley. They offer a design your own noodle dish in three steps. Excellent. Right on Shattuck down from the library. The decor is modern, fresh and comfortable, lots of room. The owners are very friendly and helpful and the serving staff is experienced, friendly and courteous. Best of all the food is delicious. We had Hokkien noodles, they'll help you choose the noodle type and sauces. My wife had the Thai sauce and I had the Laksa soup. The ingredients are well selected, fresh vegetables, including bell peppers. You can choose between spicy and mild and they have good condiments as well. The taste wasn't just good, it was excellent. They're new but they obviously know what they're doing. Friendly, good service, nice surroundings excellent food. My wife and I have added Toss to our favorite restaurants. We'll go again and we recommend it. No we're not related, didn't even know about the place, but enjoyed it so much we want to do what we can to insure their success and hope they will be in Berkeley for years to come. read more

So you end up with key lime pie + m&ms + mochi + mandarin orange + caramel sauce + coconut shavings. Kind of gross. That's Toss for you!!! Even if the ingredients separately are awesome, after you're done ordering you're really just stuck with a hodge podge of random stuff that may or may not taste good together. It's seriously a lottery. If you insist on going anyway, the Chinese fried brown rice is probably the best dish here. It's just soy sauce fried rice + meat of your choice, but it has that yummy wok fried taste that is hard to find. read more

After hours and hours of searching for a place to eat, I finally found a place. This place! Upon entering, I enjoyed the environment. It was a nice place to eat and catch up with friends. It was also a nice place for a casual date. So ordering your dish has three steps: choosing the noodles or rice, the sauce, and then the meat. My friend and I chose the hokkien noodles. One with beef and Thai sauce. The other with chicken and peanut sauce. The Thai one was slightly spicy but it tastes good spicy. The peanut sauce one was pretty saucy and sweet. While ordering it, I wasn't sure if it'd be good but it was. It was a good balance of sweet and salty with peanuts. We also got the coconut prawns. The food came out extremely fast. It came out before we were even able to bring water back to our table. It looked delicious and we couldn't wait to dig in. It's not bad. It was actually pretty good for simple noodles. They gave plenty of meat with our noodles. The coconut prawns were alright because I couldn't really taste the shrimp. But it was still good. Our total came out to be ~$24. The service was pretty good too. They came around and filled your water. Not something I would expect from a restaurant where you order, pay then sit. I would come back here and eat. read more

My friend introduced me to Toss a couple months ago, and oh my has it changed my life for the better! First of all, the food is GREAT. I always get the hokkien noodles with the Thai sauce and tofu, and it is just sooo gooood! The noodles are perfect, the sauce is amaze, the tofu is one of the best I've ever had and there is always plenty of veggies in there. The portions are also really generous. Second, get the Thai Iced Tea!! It is amazing, not too sickly sweet or too big, but just perfect. So if you're trying to find someplace to have dinner tonight, the search ends here. Try this combo next time...Ask for the Hokkien Noodles w/ Thai Sauce Pan Fried with Beef....but then you ask for a side of the Laksa Sauce. I eat here wayyyy too often. Probably once a week. I love Toss Noodle for a variety of reasons: 1. You can put together your own dish and mix and match different types of noodles and sauces and proteins. 2. The service is incredibly friendly and incredibly fast. 3. It's all reasonably priced for the portion size and you'll be in a happy food coma afterwards. 4. It's in between 2 movie theaters and across the street from another so it's very convenient if you're looking for a place to eat before watching a film. 5. Definitely tied for my FAVORITE place in Berkeley! I've been going here for the last 4 years, and no regrets at all! Food is great! I always get Hokkien noodles and switch between Malay and Thai sauce just because I prefer those two. Sometimes I get a mix which is also delicious. Regardless of what you get, most of the choices are pretty tasty and would not regret getting it. The food also comes out really quick. Thai tea is also good if you ever want to order that The location itself is in downtown Berkeley. It is okay, difficult to find parking but easy to get to via bus or bart. There is a good amount of seating inside! Groups up to 4 people fit perfectly, larger groups is doable but a bit harder. It is a self bus, so remember to clean up after yourself! The workers are nice and sometimes go around to ask if you need anything. One not so great thing is that proportions got smaller and sometimes I don't feel full after and one time i got a lemonade drink (raspberry? don't really remember) but i did not like it at all and it had an unusual spice in it that I could not recognize. If I could describe the noodles here in one word, it would be: bland. Bland, lacking flavor, very vanilla, average joe. Hokkien Laksa with beef - noodles were too hard - they should have been slippery and in between soft and hard. Laksa base was totally lacking any kind of flavor or spice. The beef was extra chewy and overcooked. Ginger chicken noodle - basically a whole heap of noodles without much toppings and barely any ginger flavor. I'm assuming they used ginger powder instead of real ginger to make this. Pretty lame if you ask me. I like that the portions here are gigantic - it's just that most of the portion is comprised of noodles (of which were pretty crappy quality) and also lacked any sort of authentic flavor. read more

I absolutely love this place. It has great noodle and its made just the way you like it, literally! You can pick the toping, the sauce, the type of noodle and someone will perfect it for you. I enjoy the atmosphere, I've been here for dates and for hang outs both very fitting. I love the little cute jars they use for the water. I like the variety they present to you in selecting the noodle and yo can mix and match pretty much anything. You can eat in or grab it togo. Parking is hard for this place but then again parking in Berkeley is horrendous in general. It's right next to a movie theatre and there are many dessert places around for after dinner. I was suppose to meet up with Lorrayne for some drinks, but decided on dinner instead and she mentioned Toss Noodle Bar. I hopped on BART after work and met her there. Lucky for us, we were able to beat the crowd. I love the concept of this place. You start by ordering the type of noodle or rice that you want. Don't worry if you don't know what each noodle is. They have a little display to guide you! Then you pick either a wok toss flavor, a broth flavor or curry. Then you pick your meat. I went with a combination of everything (beef, pork, chicken, shrimp, and tofu) with the flat rice noodles in the Thai wok toss. I also ordered a pot of their rice tea that was so delicious. I was not expecting to have a tea with so many nice flavors. We didn't wait long for our order and my eyes grew larger at the sight of my bowl being placed down on the table. The noodle was great and filling. I only got 2 shrimp and the spiciness of dish was too tame for this Latina. They do have different hot sauces that I ended up having to use. Toss has that same modern atmosphere characterized by a lot of restaurants these days (e.g. Chipotle). They definitely seem to be modeled off of Chipotle in their food as well because you choose your ingredients in a 3 step process and they toss it in a wok for you. So I got the Hokkien noodles with thai sauce and chicken and it was SO GOOD. The first time I went it was not that spicy, but then the second time (yes I went in again with my boyfriend like 3 days later) it was way spicier and even more delicious. Definitely ask for it to be spicy because I think it really enhances the flavor of the thai sauce. But the food wasn't the most impressive part for me. It was the decor. Toss has an impeccable design, which is even more astounding considering that it is a family-run business. The place has an overall fresh, clean feel with a very minimalistic design, all angles and empty space. The service was great both times. They are very attentive and helpful; making sure that we were doing okay. Overall, I gave them five stars for overall greatness, rather than any one aspect of the business. read more

This place is freaking amazing and one of the top Asian fusion places around Berkeley. Got the flat noodles with tomyum soup broth and chicken. Soup was really flavorful and noodles were just like how I like them! Friend got hokkien noodles with the coconut soup and tofu. Personally not a huge fan of coconut flavor but for those who are fans, it's delicious. Also got the shrimp appetizer. It was on the oily side but delicious nonetheless. The food came in about 5 minutes, but we went at 9pm on a weeknight. Portions are huge, and kudos if you can finish all the noodles AND broth. read more

I just moved into the state and into town last Monday. Exhausted from the move yet thrilled to be in town, my husband and I dropped into Toss Noodle. It was so scrumptious and stressfree that we went back the next two nights! Toss Noodle is a small quaint "hole in the wall" restaurant that provides a hip and easy going atmosphere. You can bring a group, go on a casual date or eat alone. Each circumstance would provide an excellent experience. Take note that there is limited seating, however I've seen larger parties move tables and chairs around freely to accommodate their group size. Toss Noddle's food is simply delicious and filling. The menu is minimal in a good way. It makes ordering quick and easy. Yet, there's enough variety to allow its customers to change up each time they come back. There's a little something for everyone. Not only is their food delicious, but their chefs also pay attention to presentation. They cook with care and present with flare. I highly recommend their restaurant. read more
