Excuse me? Do you really think minors are trying to score booze at Total Wine? These signs are rude and unnecessary and I don't need to spend my money at someplace that puts up gross signs like this. Bought a case of German Riesling for summer concerts at Descanso Gardens. I did a review of this business and the idiots at Yelp central removed it saying that is wasn't an actual customer experience. I posted a pic of the front door and the grand opening sign, but that was not sufficient. I complimented Total Wine for donating to local charities like the Pasadena Playhouse. I use to love total wines and this place have gone downhill. And just stopped by for a bottle of wine. Came with a gf and asked 3 people before getting any help. Finally at the cashier for the manager by the name Jene to card my gf and then asked for my ID too. My wallet was in the car so I waited patiently for my friend to run back to car to get ID. Well as I waited she helped the next customer. There were three guys which two of them looked super young. She only carded one of the three and they bought a bunch of alochol (cases). The sales associates are split half and half. I called to make sure I could shop in store, b/c some stores only do pickups from my experience, and was kindly helped by a guy on the phone. When I got there, the store is spotless and very organized. Kind of made me forget we are even in a pandemic. I took one star OFF because I specifically asked a sales person in the floor for a specific wine and she just took me to the aisle but did not show me where it was (and it wasn't there) so it was very "touch-and-go" type of service. Total wine is a total win (well, mostly) in my book. I'd driven by this store about a zillion times and finally made it in on a recent search for a specific bottle. This place is very similar to Bevmo in both selection and prices--I mean, it's gigantic. So many wines to choose from, but also beer (including kegs/mini kegs), spirits, cigars, glassware, etc. They have a big classroom-meets-bar this room where they had a list of different wine classes for $20 a pop. There was one going on at the time with maybe three or four people in it. $20 does seem like a steal, but assuming you're going to pick up a few bottles afterwards, they might want to consider offering a free class here and there. There was also a smaller beer sampling area with a two who happened to be sampling my fiancé's recent fave, Bitburger (they have bottles, cans, and the nonalcoholic version!). Two other perks: they've got a giant parking lot in the back (a gosh dang miracle for Colorado Blvd in Pasadena) and a bottle chiller that will leave your room temp bottle cold as ice before you're out the door. Pretty nifty! They do have a membership program like lots of grocers/superstores, although the cashier couldn't really tell me the benefit and there was no first time discount like they have a Bevmo. My two gripes? This place is lacking highly experienced staff out on the floor (at least while we were there). What I love about going to a small bottle shop is getting the perfect recommendation and a little back story on the product. I was looking for a dry Lambrusco to chill and drink at home, and the associate onsite suggested I check out the red blends and just put it in the fridge. I found what I was looking for on my own (in the bubbles aisle!) and I get that there's a huge selection, but expertise can go a long way on the sales floor. This place also needs a little upkeep--dusty wine bottles and dirty baseboards are two pet peeves of mine. TL;DR? Worth a stop, especially if you live in the area. Good spot to check out if you're going to be entertaining as it looks like they do case discounts (at least sometimes). Several workers asked if I needed any help and got referrals for a couple of items. They had a beer tasting and 5 cent wine tasting after Noon. Wow, was I met with an interesting scenario today. I'll start off with backstory: I am two months shy of turning 21, so of course I realize that I cannot buy alcohol. Wasn't going to anyways. Simply popped in the store with my boyfriend. Now first things first, I understand it's company policy to be a bit dramatic with ID checking, but you don't have to make every person feel like a criminal while you're at it. But... My boyfriend (who is 21) and I went to this store after a nice lunch so he could browse the craft beer selection. We thought we would be able to do so, as I was accompanied by someone who was over 21. While he was browsing, I was looking for a simple root beer. Not actual beer, just root beer. Nothing felt criminal about it because it was a SODA. When we got to the cashier, she asked for both of our identification, even though I wasn't purchasing the beers and soda, nor was I going to drink any beer anyways! We were met with a very flustered manager who practically kicked us out. I also apparently couldn't even be outside of the store while he was purchasing the items. I call BS. If you're going to card every single person that walks in, do it at the door so we don't have to waste our time here to be met with such an embarrassing situation. Again, I realize that at 20 I am unable to purchase alcohol. Makes sense. We explained to the cashier that we were buying non-alcoholic items but he refused to hear us out and very rudely insisted that because we are inside a liquor store we must show ID to make any purchase. I found this to be a ludicrous response and a terrible policy considering the vast amount of non-alcoholic items available for sale at Total Wine. I've walked into several stores that sell liquor and have never been forced to show an ID for non-alcoholic items. Very disappointed with Total Wine and More in general. All the allocated bourbons and whiskeys only end up to be sold to blackmarket. I have been calling them every Wednesdays and Fridays between 9 & 11 for over 3 months. All I hear from them is that we got Blantons, Wellers, Henry McKenna etc etc. but all sold out. I was very pissed off to hear this everytime. When I asked them how these get sold so fast, and how people come to know about this; they said there was a queue from 7 am waiting for allocated stuff no matter if they get it on that day or not. Fine... let me see myself... I preponed my working hours and went at 8 am there was no queue on Wednesday and Friday, at least for couple of weeks that I went. That seemed BS. Somehow there's internal tieup with the employees and the liquor shops that they exactly know when they get the allocated stuff. This is because when I called they said they have more than one bottle and they can't say the exact number or put on hold... but everywhere I went they reported back that it was all gone. My experience overall here felt horrible. I only went into this store because my wife wanted to look at wine while I wanted to go to Vroman's bookstore. As we're waking In, an employee and a manager are talking outside of the store and we overhear the woman tell the man, "there's only white supervisors here" so that was strange. We walk into the store and my wife is looking for a specific wine but we wanted to look around first. As we're walking around my wife is looking at her phone to remember what the wine was called. Suddenly, a white frantic man who looks like a a manger (white shirt with tie) tells us, "once you are ready you can go up to the front to pay" so my wife and I looked at each other in confusion and she tells him he must have us confused. Why would this man walk up to us and tell us the obvious (of course we pay in the front like a normal store) and come at us so frantically. I didn't want to jump the gun that he was profiling us and assumed we were attempting To steal or something. I have no idea. So my wife was like well anyways I'm looking for this wine and he walks us to them and literally as he's explaining to us the differences. He stops mid sentence and just leave and makes us figure it out. This manager was clearly insinuating something beyond my imagination. But I will never be back here again. I've never felt so uncomfortable in my life. I tried to convince my wife not to buy the wine because of how I felt we were being targeted but she finally found the one she was looking for (with no help of the racist/sexist manager) but she really wanted it.
