The clerk told me that wine is not vintage specific and they can't guaranty what vintage will be available. This is the second time that this has occurred at this store. The Total Wine & More stores that I've visited (Reno and Pleasant Hill CA) have been overwhelming experiences. There's so much inventory and so many choices, that it's disorienting at first. I was looking for a 6 pack of Dirty Wookie beer the first time and eventually gave up and had to ask for assistance. Gayle was with me and we left with several bottles of Chardonnay and a nice Mendocino dry Gewürztraminer. The 2nd time, I was in search of Belgium Christmas Beer and stumbled upon it by accident. I'll certainly be back when I'm in the neighborhood. Otherwise, it's a bit of a schlep from Genoa to Reno for an alcohol run. I suspect that the Carson City/Minden/Gardnerville area doesn't have any equivalent the the Major League selection at Total Wine, but I'd be happy to find something at the AA level to save on mileage. read more

My two sons went into the store to purchase for an occasion. The oldest being almost 24 the youngest being 18 almost 19. Both legal adults! The oldest tried to make a purchase ( for himself) and was denied because his younger brother was with him. I called down to see why? I told the manager it would be no different if I walked in with my youngest, yet they would sell to me? Yes because they would " assume " I was the father. Yet they really don't know what relationship we are. On a side note the oldest is also active military, with a military ID. What a way to spit in the face! Visited on Saturday 5/12/2018 We received an add in the paper/mail which had 12 packs of a beer we like on sale for quite a bit less than what we normally pay for it, so we decided to stop by while we were in the area. It turned out that the add price did not go into effect until the next day. However, a young man, I am sorry I forgot the name that was helping us at the customer service counter, said that he would honor the price, because he didn't want to have us have to drive down there again. She told me all about the origins and flavors of the wine and recommended several after asking me what I'd like to spend. I was super anxious to see the different varieties of liquor they had . Upon going in I seen their sign said "No one under the age of 21 unless with a parent or legal guardian" I walked into the store with my brother who is the age of 20. He's under the age however I am his legal guardian , he wasn't going to buy any drinks nor was he going to taste anything . I was with 3 other friends , we all had our I.D. One of the ladies said they weren't going to let us taste their wine until they got a manager . I stated to them over and over "I am his legal guardian " the manager didn't care he was still being rude and stated we can go to Benz liquor. At that point I felt like they just didn't want us buying their liquor but could buy elsewhere. I told this story to one of my other friends about the story . Who then told me they didn't have that problem with them when they brought their cousin who is under the age but is her legal guardian . Again at this point I felt it was a racial thing . Considering I am African American and the friends I had with me at the time were Mexicans . The friend that didn't have this problem is Caucasian . I will not be going back to that store . read more

I had the worst experience at your store. I was shopping for margarita ingredients with my 20 year old son. Your store policy states minors are allowed in your store as long as they are accompanied by a legal guardian 21 or older. Your cashier refused to sell to ME because my minor son didn't have an ID. Help me make that make sense?! Your cashier was rude, condescending, and borderline accused me of trying to buy alcohol for minors. However as I was leaving after he told me we HAD to leave, he said we could come back if my son brought his ID. My MINOR son. I was beyond embarrassed and irate, like I'm actually going to come back?! I will say I did get a call from one of your managers however, reading additional 1 star reviews this seems to be a consistent problem at your store. To me, there is zero point in having any conversation with a manager as I've seen complaints from other customers regarding similar situations from 6 years ago. So instead, I emailed your CEO and I'll shop at Ben's from now on. I also made sure to share my experience with over a dozen friends at our game night. They really enjoyed the margaritas I made using the ingredients the super friendly and kind manager at Ben's recommended. Oh and Ben's sold to me even though my 20 year old son was with me and they also were shocked and laughed at how incompetent your staff is stating "How hard is it to understand and enforce that policy? The Balvenie Scotch tasting at Total Wine and More was a good value for $10. Total has a big room for these tasting in the back that is laid out schoolhouse style. As usual they served cheese, salami, chips, crackers and dark chocolate. For that price we were served the 12 year old Doublewood, the 14 year old Caribbean Cask, and the 17 year old Doublewood. We also got a The Balvenie Tasting and Nose glass that is either Riedel or the same quality as the Riedel ones I have at home. The US rep for Balvenie, Gemma and David Stewart, MBE the master distiller who had worked there for over 50 years provided a great history of The Balvenie were in Scotland. They gave a talk across the US via internet. You could send your questions via Twitter or Instagram as well as post your photos to win prizes. It was a fun and smart way to engage the audience. My favorite was the Caribbean Cask because it is so lite and smooth and also a little tropical. One thing I learned was that 5 years makes a big difference. The 17 year old Doublewood was much smoother and more luscious than the 12 year old. I could see the 17 year old Doublewood as an after dinner drink because it paired well with the dark chocolate. ******************************************* Riedel wine glass seminar. It is my second time going to one of these and they are super informative. Originating in Kufstein, Austria in 1756, the hand made items are still made there. Glasses are varietal specific and really make a difference in how the wine tastes. They also have a Coca-Cola glass. The Sommelier collection is hand blown. This started with Claus Riedel in 1958. There are 4 sensations when drinking wine and these glasses capture the best of all of them: taste, texture, bouquet, and flavor. read more

I normally have such a great experience here. Everyone throughout the store is communicative and enthusiastic to educate you about your wine options. Today lingering through the store was no different, I was offered assistance on multiple accounts and was advised in a special promotion. I was running errands all day with baby and had her in the carrier on my chest. Upon time to check out I immediately felt judgement by the lady at the cash register. I unloaded my 10 bottles of wine. She was silent throughout that process. Then asked if I needed a box. Well, I'd say so.. thank you I said. I inquired about my discount but she said it didnt apply because I selected wrong wines. I let her know I picked everything that was marked as winery direct so they may want to double check what is marked so that doesn't happen to another customer. She scoffed at me again. It was just such an unpleasant experience for a new mom who is just getting accustomed to running errands with baby. I'm sorry I can't afford a nanny to make YOU feel more comfortable. Please don't pass judgement on those you don't know. And please don't take my feedback regarding the promos as criticism, I just wanted to make sure future customers didn't have the same problem. I was looking for Cooper & Thief, they are out temporarily, but he helped me with a similar red blend, aged 3 months in a bourbon barrel. John suggested Big Six Bourbon Barrel Red Blend. So I got two. Upon scanning the other reds, I was looking for a pinot noir. I can across one of John's favorite, an Amici Pinot Noir. It's a deal today, $10.00 for a limited time. Omgosh! This place has so much selections of every type of wine, liquor and beer you can think of. It's a bit overwhelming but great to know there's a place like this. They also have drinking snacks, like pretzels, sriracha peas, peanuts but I didn't see any chips. They have a small selection of tumblers. Cute wine tumblers, too. How does this place get its reputation for good selection and low prices? It's a sham. I found wines on the website that I liked but they were not on the shelf. I have heard from two informed sources that TW keeps the good stuff in the back for the special customers. As far as prices they were 50% higher on two high end Scotch's that I wanted to buy. Talisker 10 and Ledig 10. $25 more. They have plenty of cheap stuff and they push their low end wines. But as far as selection and price on good stuff they should be called Total Lyin. When I travel I always consult Yelp! for suggestions on local liquor stores and often score good bottles on my list. Even though I've visited every major liquor store in Reno, I rarely rate them on Yelp! Surprised I've not reviewed my local Total Wine earlier because I've been coming here for years. It's just not the place it was a few years ago, so I felt it was time to say so. A few (2-3) years ago the selection of stuff I was looking for was really good, but now it's terrible. First off, if you are a wine drinker, you will likely love this place. The wine selection is huge. The beer selection is also pretty big. So an important caveat to my review is I'm not a big consumer of either wine or beer. My thing is bourbon, rye, and rum, and for these, my local Total Wine is completely disappointing. The DO have the best prices in town if all you want is average stuff like Jack Daniels, but there selection of really interesting, unique, and top shelf spirits is awful. I check the selection here at least once a week and nothing every changes; hence, I usually am in and right back out in 5 minutes. In this respect, Total Wine in Reno is no different than Ben's - average stuff at great prices. I know they get high quality allocated bourbons like Elijah Craig Barrel Proof, but they NEVER put those on the shelf. Allocated juice sits in a back room held for someone they have a "relationship" with to come get. I know this because of an experience I had about a year ago. I came in on a Friday and they had a price marker for ECBP on the shelf but no inventory. I asked when it would be on the shelf and was told to come back Monday. I was there when they opened Monday and the price marker was no longer on the shelf, so I asked about it. The ECBP along with an Elijah Craig 18 were being "held" in a cabinet behind the registers and I had to persistent to get one of each. No customer should ever have to beg for a bottle that is in inventory. This could be a great store if they would put every bottle on the self for every customer to have a chance to purchase, first come, first served. This month alone I've found top shelf bottles like Stagg Jr, Blanton's, Old Rip, and Old Forester 150 on the shelves of Raley's and Costco, but not Total Wine. If Raley's and Coscto are getting good bottles, then you know Total is also. The difference in customer experience is driven by policies designed to benefit on a few of their customers. This store could be the best in town under new management and new polices. read more

The only reason I would give this place even one star is thanks to one worker there. She was sweet while looking for a specific item. Besides that it was terrible customer service from a male cashier. Right from the start he was rude instead of communicating with us he just stood there and gave attitude. Another issue was that even though I was separate from the group ahead of me he had to check my ID for their purchase ?? (Everyone purchasing was of age) Instead of arguing I just left my items which was a shame that one worker can ruin what could've been a good experience. He also said we couldn't leave until everyone showed IDs even though we were separate paying customers and no longer buying items because of his power trip attitude.(everyone's IDs were scanned) It was unacceptable behavior.I truly wouldn't recommend this place to anyone! read more

I love wine but during the holiday season, I REALLY love wine. This place is fantastic for people like me who know what flavors they like in their wine but also want to try different varieties. Most of their wines have pretty detailed descriptions so you have a good idea of what you're buying. Prices range from lower end to higher, but most of the wines are within the 8 to 15 dollar per bottle range. The staff is very friendly and very knowledgeable. I was asked by three if they could help me find anything and each made eye contact and smiled. Lastly, did I mention they have wine sample stations?? How great is that!?! read more

"Bevmo, what's that?!", is exactly what you'll be saying too once you set foot in here. Huge selection of items to which they are all fairly priced (not a huge mark up from Costco or other places), and with beers; instead of being forced to buy a 4 or 6pk, you can buy singles! They also fill up growlers here too. There's not too much I can say about Total Wine that hasn't been said already. Their rewards program is awesome. I'm constantly getting coupons that I can actually use and there isn't a crazy limit you have to spend either. It's mainly like 15% off wine, $1 off 4 or 6pk of beer, etc... The employees here are really nice and helpful. So if you haven't been to Total Wine in Reno, you need to shop here. I do prefer Total Wine's over Ben's and Bevmo.
