I went here for lunch the other day... They have a really good selection of vegetarian options, which was nice. I ordered at the counter and then waited outside. Man... It took like 15-20 mins to get my food. Idk what's up with that... I guess business has slowed and maybe they've also slowed with it? Anyway, I had to think about this one, but I've bumped my review up to a 4 star, because I think the food here was really unique. Very different from your standard taqueria. A trustworthy local nook to get authentic Mexican food. The tacos and quesadillas are our favorite items here, with soft and fresh tortillas, and great flavored ingredients and sauces. The restaurant is a bit small but the kitchen size is not! Hence, they are not sacrificing the food quality it's great for takeout. The beans were really delicious 10/10. I was reluctant because they look like black beans and those aren't my favorite. However rice and beans were best thing I ate here. I tried tacos de barbacoa and a tamal.. small place so not somewhere you can go in and sit with a bigger crowd, we were a table for two and there was one larger table to accommodate 4 and then some booth type smaller seating. A fast casual restaurant. Lots of vegan and vegetarian choices. Also has meats so something for everyone. I had the burrito loco combo with soy chorizo. It was delicious! Husband had Al pastor tacos. He also loved his Horchata. I'm liked that they had different flavors of aqua Fresca. We ate outside and the woman behind the counter, could not have been nicer. I had not been to Totopos for a long time as don't live close anymore. Took my cousin from out of town there to pick up food as they don't have real Mexican food where she lives. Had the greatest chat with the daughter of the owner! She even put a note on my carry out box thanking me for coming back! So nice! The food as always was fantastic. The horchata so yummy and fresh. Cannot say enough good things about the mole. My cousin loved her food too and was so grateful to eat something yummy and real. We can hardly wait to have their wonderful flan tonight! Thank you! I have limited options for delivery at work so I decided to try this lace out, what a find! The food is delicious, authentically Mexican and delivered quickly! I ordered the torta de milanesa dinner with rice and beans and an horchata water. Most Mexican restaurants either have good rice and mediocre beans or the other way around but this place delivers on both; the torta de milanesa was tasty as well. Heard this place serves authentic Mexican food and we certainly agree! The restaurant is a bit tiny, with 3 tables in total, one to seat four, and the rest seats two. But don't be fooled by the size and the people inside the restaurant, a lot of people come for takeout, which means these guys are popular for a reason, we will be returning guests too!! However, be aware, as the sign in here says, "authentic Mexican food takes time." Every word in this phrase is true... Today, we ordered steak, chicken and jamon tacos and a steak asada quesadilla. The tacos came with corn tortilla, which wasn't our favorite, we prefer flour, but it was actually pretty decent, not dry but was soft and moist. It came with two tortillas each and lots of meat, which we split it up and ended up with 6 tacos, still had more fillings than some Mexican places! The meats had balanced seasonings and tastes pretty good. If I had to be picky, it lacks certain sweetness and was a little dry. I don't know if its just us, but it seems like everyone here ordered everything on the menu except tacos... In comparison, our other item, the steak asada quesadilla was awesome! Every detail checked the awesome box for us, from the tortilla, to the steak, flavors and to the cheese! I will definitely be back for this! In summary, this is a great neighborhood Mexican restaurant, suitable for takeouts, and is true to its slogan "authentic Mexican food takes time." I JUST found this amazing restaurant near me (like literally 5 minutes away) and EVERYTHING can be veganized on the menu. The restaurant is small and so cozy. It's like walking into your grandmother's kitchen and feeling at home. They are run by two of the most friendliest and super knowledgeable women I have ever met and they have both soy chorizo & soy ground beef. Updated review. It's been nine years since my first review and I have added a star. This place is better. The food is delicious. When you walk in, you can see the employees cooking and working hard but there is never a lapse on customer service. I order through Yelp and they usually give you a time range to pick up. I love that I got a call yelling me that they are packing my order and it will be ready to pick up. The kitchen just smells like someone cooking delicious Mexican food at home. I have been really into their tostadas lately. I get it with chorizo. Its delicious. With every order I pick up a 16oz order of their guacamole. Its the best.. This is my go to Mexican place. You get everything, great food and great service. It's just nice to find a place that truly seems like they put 100% in every order. Will always go here and you should too. read more

So today is cinco de mayo, I wanted some tacos. This place is NOT it...the food was not good. The flavors were not there. The salsa verde was not good at all. Sitting in there, they had multiple customers come in with online orders, that were not Mexican.....so of course I'm sure they believed it was great. My expectations were not met seeing as to it was rated 4.5 stars. I got a burrito and they have a medium and large....the large was smaller than my phone. Sometimes you wonder what that little strip mall Mexican place is gonna give you.. First of all the pozole is the wayyyy to go. Delicious, homemade and perfectly seasoned. How very disappointing... It's National Tamale Day so I paid them a visit. I went with 2 pork and 1 chicken. I was puzzled when she asked if I wanted the tamales warm or cold? I said warm. Obviously they don't make them fresh on Tuesday as in the past. The chicken was scolding hot and the pork was barely room temperature, they forgot the salsa too. The tamales are tiny now, barely 5" long. Very skimpy on meat too. What a shame... that's $8 down the drain. When I called they said they were made on Saturday and sometimes they are small. We are not big people nor do we eat huge meals. We split 5 tacos a order of rice and beans and $22 later ( no drink) we were still a bit hungry even half hr later. 3) felt rushed ordering takeout so naturally I paid some extra for CC processing because I missed a small sign posted, they couldve pointed it out to make sure people are aware along with the Covid surcharges. This is already a highly rated restaurant in the area and it is for a reason. The staff here are friendly and know their regulars. My partner and I decided to Totopos on a random Saturday after seeing them pop up and when we walked in we were treated like family and so was everyone who walked in. The girl at the front was so sweet! Like I said, they know their regulars. People walked in and the room was immediately filled with happy conversation and laughter. This little hole-in-the-wall is also nicely decorated and colorful while still being tasteful and a comforting place to be. The food is great period. The tostadas are really crispy and they made it home and we're still crunchy. The pork is juicy and flavorful. The quesadilla is huge and filled well. The structural integrity is there too. The burrito is friggin awesome too. The steak was melding really well with their beans and creates a really flavorful bit. The rice is really really flavorful as well. Their salsa verde is more of a creamy version but it adds a surprising amount of flavor that mixes well with all the other ingredients. Speaking of, everything is SUPER fresh and you can tell. Totopos saves the day. I don't give out 5-star reviews often, but ultimately the quality of the food here, along with the friendly service, and the utter rarity of decent vegan food in the Chicago suburbs, makes this place deserve the highest rating. I started with a soy meat tamale ($2). They make them fresh on Tuesdays, so try to get them then. The filling consisted of a savory blend of soy meat, nopales and peppers. I loved it. The chickpea salad tostada ($4.50) has a great, fresh, crispy shell and bold flavors. That said, I thought the chickpea salad was too lime-y and sour, though I liked that you could get a fresh vegetable option for food that's normally all fried and heavy. The soy chorizo taco ($2) was solid, but my favorite thing on the menu was the simple, no-frills soy meat taco ($2) which comes on a handmade taco shell with cilantro and onion. This is a great taco, vegan or otherwise. The service is friendly and understands the term "vegan." They have a full vegetarian page on their menu, and a couple other vegan dishes scattered on other pages or written on the specials board. The inside has only three small tables, so don't come here with a large group. You'd never guess that a small Mexican joint in a stripmall in the middle of the suburbs would have such good food. read more

I heard about this place from my daughter and I was pleasantly surprised! I drive past this place all the time but it didn't immediately draw my attention. See, another good reason to pay attention to yelpers! (And foodie daughters.) It's a small place with several tables, but there is table service and take out. The door opens directly into the eating area, so it's going to be pretty chilly in there when it gets cold outside. Otherwise, it has the homey vibe that portends good eating - and that's the truth when you get your food. It's not speedy, but it's like sitting in Mom's kitchen waiting expectantly. Bigger menu than I was expecting! Some things that you'd expect and some things you wouldn't. There's the usual enchiladas, burritos, tacos, but also cemitas and other sandwiches. And horchata to drink! I was so happy to see vegetarian options - I got the soy chorizo burrito and hubby got the mole enchilada plate. We were both delighted! My burrito was filled to bursting with beans, lettuce, soy chorizo (nicely smoky but not overwhelming), cheese, tomatoes and slightly spicy sauce in a crisped tortilla. I wish I'd gotten the big one! The enchiladas came with rice and beans and the mole sauce was outstanding. This is nothing like your typical midwestern "Mexican" restaurant. I can't wait to go back. Oh, and the prices are extremely reasonable. One tip, though, for vegetarians: I asked about the tamales. Yes, they contain lard. EVEN THE VEGAN ONES. Huh?
