We stopped by Totto for lunch. Ordered the spicy paitan and spicy megan ramen. Mega ramen comes with thicker wavier noodles and it's their 'extra large' bowl. The regular spicy paitan comes with skinny thing noodles. It will say on the menu that the mega ramen has extra garlic paste along with some crunchy girl in it. It was quite tasty. I'm a fan. The pork was so tender some of it melted into the soup. I even saw the sear marks. I believe they hand sear them per order. My gawddd Regular spicy ramen was average. It could've used something. Just not sure what it was. Would not say it sucked. Oh and there was a good amount of I think it was black pepper that settles to the bottom of the bowl. I don't know how to feel about that. The one thing I question is the added cabbage in the mega ramen. I don't think it ruined the ramen but I also think it just doesn't need to be in it. Not to mention, it's the harder stems part. The bottom of the cabbage bulk that's harder. They were sliced. I finished them. But I wonder if next time I would've enjoyed it even more without the cabbage. Food (1/2): Takoyaki was alright. The dough was a bit too much and the octopus bits inside felt slightly fishy and possibly undercooked as well. Tried the paitan ramen and spicy paitan--overall decent. The ramen noodles tends to be overcooked. Sometimes way too soft, some other time just slightly but overcooked nonetheless. Menmas were also quite inconsistent where some would be well-cooked but others would be undercooked. The pork slices were generous but also too thick for my tastes. I'd prefer it if they reduce the thickness by a quarter or half. Broth flavor was decent but I fail to figure out what flavor/texture it's trying to go for. A bit lacking in saltiness. Not creamy but also not "soup" consistency, it's at that awkward medium consistency, in my opinion. The chicken flavor is there but faint. It felt as if their tare was under-flavored. Nevertheless, it's not a bad dish. Their portion however, is humongous. ( o .o) b Service/wait-time/cleanliness (1.5/2): Cleanliness was great. The main reasons to go here is because they are one of the only Ramen places that do take-out and they are also one of the only ones to offer chicken as an option (for people like myself who don't eat pork). The first time I went, it was pretty good. I got the Chicken Paitan with pulled char siu chicken. I added corn, cabbage and fried garlic. The fried garlic was served on the side, which was a good idea. I felt the broth needed a little kick so I asked for some Rayu on the side as well and that definitely helped. The second time I ordered take-out and when I saw how busy they were, I set my expectations low and it's a good thing I did. I ordered the same exact thing but when I got home, what I had was regular char siu chicken instead of the pulled char siu chicken and they forgot my fried garlic. I have been living in assembly for over a year and I finally tried this place out. I strayed away for so long because I do use yelp to make my decisions on the places to eat at and the current reviews and pics just pushed me away from it. Today I finally tried it because a couple of my friends wanted to go. We of course ordered ramen and I also got the Avo-Tuna app. Do not get the Avo-Tuna app. It's flavorless and just straight up terrible. The chicken ramen lacked a lot of flavor and the chicken itself was chewy and rubbery. The veggie ramen also didn't have much to it. Unfortunately service was not great either. One of the girls seemed cheerful and was attending to us, but our actual waiter made a couple of mistakes on my friends order. Apparently no mushrooms means extra mushrooms. 5 minutes were spent explaining that my friend didn't want mushrooms. When her order came out, there were a lot of mushrooms in her ramen. I thought this place was pretty good and deserves four stars instead of three like it currently has. Didn't get sick from the food, left full, had average service. I ordered the paitan (menu item 1) and spicy ramen (item 2) for $11 and $12, respectively. The spicy ramen's broth was rather flavorless, unfortunately, while the paitan's broth was very thick and reminded me of a carbonara. Aside from that, the spicy ramen was okay. I wouldn't get it again but it wasn't awful. The paitan was definitely the better of the dishes, though. Both bowls' pork was flavorful, though I wouldn't say it melts in your mouth. My friends and I have been coming here for years now. After a few months, we decided to grab some ramen last night before our movie. I ordered my usual spicy, and noticed immediately that something was different about the ramen. Instead of using typical Ramen noodles, they used hard rice noodles, which threw off the whole dish. Then the broth was no longer savory and the spicy oil they used was reduced to a different spicy garlic pepper sauce that immediately burned my lips and mouth (and left a burnt taste in my mouth after). I can understand with Covid how things can change, but this was a totally different, sub par bowl of Ramen. Sadly, this will be the last time I spend $50 on two bowls of Ramen there. I split the extra large paitan ramen and takoyaki with my girlfriend and was satisfied enough. I was very pleasantly surprised! The atmosphere here in this small restaurant is very casual, not too loud, plenty of tables around 12:45. I ordered the classic paitan with pork and the meat was well-seasoned and tender. The soup, arguably the most important part of the bowl (other than noodles, of course), was thick and rich. A little too much scallion for my taste, but not awful. My friends ordered the spicy ramen and loved it. I ordered take out too but unfortunately those noodles were all clumped together and needed a lot of help to loosen up after I poured on the soup. Review is for the Assembly Row location... I've been to the Allston location as well. I much prefer one of the NYC locations but I am glad there are two here in Beantown. There are several pros for the Assembly Row location: 1. There is free parking 2. You can use your credit card to pay (all other locations are cash only). 3. There never seems to be a wait. I can always get a table when I arrive. The only complaint (and it is minor) is that the ramen is not as good as the ones from the NYC locations. Is it the broth? Is it is the way it is prepared? I usually get the paitan or spicy ramen. This time I got the mega but had it made spicy. I asked if it was spicy and the server said "yes". It was very mild but I can taste the spice. There's no shortage of ramen restaurants in Boston, and every one is attempting to be the famed Ippudo NY of the city, but alas...I still haven't found one that's all that memorable. Totto is great for the occasional ramen craving when it's chilly out or you're coming down with some winter plague provided by the lovely germ house that is the T, but the ramen simply lacks flavor and complexity. Points for a perfectly cooked slightly runny egg, but the broth needs a little help. Like most Asian soups -- Vietnamese pho, Korean soups -- the broth is the most intricate part of the whole meal, all the complexities coming from beef, pork, chicken, bone marrow, and about 20 other ingredients, boiled over hours and hours. The ramen here just doesn't seem to have that same hearty complexity that makes me typically love it so much. I've had the miso ramen, and just dump spoonfuls of the spicy sauce in to give it a kick. The Cha-Siu should be super tender, and charred for a burnt finish. But the cha-siu that we got was dried out and bland. Also the noodles were straight, white noodles - which caught me by surprise. The NYC one sticks to wavy, yellow textured noodles, which wayyy better complements the rich broth. Overall, the flavor of the broth was definitely awesome! Bold and flavorful, without being too overwhelming rich. But the meat and the noodles were lackluster. Totto bust. I'm always pumped to eat ramen on a cold day but this place was exactly what I had expected when reading the previous reviews. The staff were friendly and we received our order very quickly, but the ramen toppings were scarce for the most part and there were no topping on the table such as garlic or ginger which left me disappointed. My ramen didn't come with a boiled egg, which I had to order on the side. The flavor of the broth reminded me of eggs every bite, which by the end was overpowering. The pork was tender and they provide a fair amount of it as well. The restaurant feels very clean, but it was small as well with only seating for about 30 people. I love ramen way too much for my own good. I spent some time in Japan and ate it every day because...duh. When I found out that Totto was a new-ish ramen place in Assembly, I was excited to go for a friend's birthday. We all ordered our own vice, and I went for the Mega with an addition of extra spicy rayu. There was a ton of food in the bowl when I got it, including three different types of pork. The pork was cooked impressively well, actually. It was all braised, which is what I preferred, and incredibly tender. As for everything else, though, it was just okay. The noodles were fine but the broth lacked a lot of flavor that I was anticipating, especially with the extra spicy rayu added. Unfortunately, it didn't do much. It was a good meal overall, but for the price ($18-ish), I'd much rather head into Chinatown for a much more authentic and higher quality bowl of ramen. read more

Great overall experience. I ordered the miso ramen and felt the miso really uplifted my ramen to a higher level. It definitely adds another layer rod complexity and I think the miso helps to balance the saltiness of the ramen. Aside from the food, we sat near the bar and the chefs were super nice. Checking in on us throughout the meal to make sure everything was ok. My one recommendation would be to always go for the pork rather than chicken. As I have always been blown away by Totto Ramen at NYC, I came in with unrealistically high expectations. Turns out they did not fail miserably, but certainly did not match or exceed my hope as well. During each visit I tend to opt for their spicy miso ramen, and add spicy bamboo shoots on the side - which is pretty much the saving grace. I've tried the Paitan, Miso, and Curry ramen. I usually get the Miso or Curry when I want egg (comes with half of a boiled egg). Paitan - their classic ramen with straight noodles. Nori is a nice touch and I like that it comes with 2 kinds of meat -- pulled pork and char siu. Char siu is tender. Miso - comes with a dollop of miso paste, which I recommend mixing with the rest of the broth before eating! I was surprised by the raw onion, but it added a nice crunch. The miso adds a creaminess to the broth. Curry - if you've ever had Japanese curry, that is what this ramen tastes like. Has a hint of curry flavor and sweetness to it. Great combo when you're craving curry and ramen at the same time! Mega - my partner ordered this once. It's pretty big and I definitely can't finish it, but it filled him up. Veggie ramen - broth is veggie based. I've also brought my vegetarian friends here for their first ramen experience and they loved it. BROTH - on the thinner side, but not a problem for me because it still has flavor. A few times I end up finishing the broth while waiting for the check. Their broth uses a chicken base (vs pork base at other ramen places). They also don't use msg - monosodium glutamate. There's usually a wait around noon and I avoid coming here around that time. Paitain ramen starts at $11, not bad compared to other food places in Assembly. Ramen also comes out quickly. They take credit card now and their Allston location is still cash only. It's a small unassuming spot but the ramen didn't disappoint. We started off with an order of the pork char-siu bun, which was underwhelming. The bun didn't hold up great, and the filling was just lettuce and mayo. The pork itself was solid though. But we didn't come for buns, we can for ramen and that's where they pulled through. I got their "Mega" ramen as it was listed on their menu as their best-seller. They had me at pork three-ways. The broth was rich but not overpoweringly unctuous or oily which was great. I came on a Monday night around 6 pm for a casual business meeting, and we were able to find a table of 4 pretty easily. Our server was very attentive the whole time, and was very helpful with recommendations. We started with the gyoza, two pork buns, two chicken buns, and fried peppers. Everything was great, except I remember the buns being much better when I went to this establishment in New York City. The appetizers were a bit overpriced for what they were. For Ramen, I got the number 1 with an added poached egg. Others ordered the spicy ramen with a poached egg, miso ramen with corn, and a regular miso ramen. We all seemed to enjoy our dishes very much, and it was just the perfect amount! Overall, this would be a great place to go if you wanted something warm. I just got back from NYC couple days ago, I had Totto Ramen and Ippudo Ramen in NYC, that made me really want to get back there again and again. First is the taste, my boyfriend and I ordered the Paitan Ramen $11 and my sister ordered Spicy Remen $12 (definitely not spicy miso). At the first bite, the broth was not too bad it was thick and soggy but the taste was a little bit too light. Even my boyfriend who never add any extra ingredients like chili or pepper, he had to add them to his soup. My sister also needed to add a ton of dry chili in her Spicy ramen as it was not spicy at all as its name. The noodle was ok, not hard or not same as it came from the package. Second is the service, we were appreciated to the waiter who tried to seat every customer as fast as he could, and brought all orders immediately. BUT....I am not sure why he was switched with a small lady to the kitchen. The waitress was not friendly or polite at all, she looked upset someone all the time, even she assigned the seat she pointed her finger to the table, she did not even lead us to the table. The 20% tip that I gave to them, I was really mean to give to the waiter for working hard and gave us a good service. Overall, this place is just ok, not too bad but not really good like if you come to Assembly Row you have to try this place, it is not.
