Where should a massage therapist display their certification and how do we know it's the same person? First time to this spa. Because of my experience, I was surprised with the positive ratings from others. My issue is with the woman providing the Massage versus the spa. I was surprised, but not unhappy, about wearing the provided outfit. It was rumpled and a bit scratchy but I view massage as physical therapy so got into the athletic vibe vs pampering. In retrospect. I should've kept on my panties as I don't know their laundry practices. My best massages have been w/my loose clothes on so the therapist can freely move limbs, etc. In this case it was more about modesty which is cool. It started well; a scalp massage, which is often skipped, so it was a treat. Skipping the traditional gliding motions that often identify problem areas, she went directly into pressure kneading my trapezius and scapulae area. I DID request deep tissue but typically there are broader motions that prep the muscles to accept that level of pressure. I breathed into it. Her understanding of English was very low and I started to pay closer attention. She was aggressive working near my spine (not on) but her stroke directions were in the proper direction, so I appreciated the approach. The legs, that was unorthodox. The strokes were lateral across the quads without first gliding along the direction of the muscles. I was clearly uncomfortable, twisted my body and motioned for her to stop. I did say "no" she paused and then did the same thing with less pressure. I waived my hands to indicate no more. There was no glute work nor calf's but I was relieved. I don't recall arms but maybe. I was mentally flipping thru decades of massages, often with an ongoing masseuse, and could not recall my quads being massaged like that other than perhaps small areas near ligaments to slowly work out an adhesion. She was doing my hands and it occurred to me, by the motions she was making, she seemed most knowledgeable about scalp and hand massages. Those services are often found in beauty salons. I really question if she was certified in the state of Illinois to give a full massage. She brought out hot stones, which is probably part of the routine and placed them on my back without first checking the temperature and they were very hot. I sat up on the table. She switched the technique and rubbed the sides of the rocks quickly across my back (much better, thanks) and then placed all of them flat again on my back, prompting me to once again to sit up. We could not communicate with one another. She was very sweet. I have had massages given by people with very little English skills, but through hand motions, tones and simply strong skills on the masseuse's part, it's never been an issue. I tipped generously. I hope your experiences are better than mine as I had only on massage. In the future, when I go to other spas, I'm going to look for certifications hanging on the wall. read more

My husband surprised me with a spa day! I took a half day for work thinking that we were going to the cubs game but to my surprise, he treated me to a spa day & it was such a lovely surprise. He called to book the appt and I had to do was show up. It's only a few minute walk from the redline. Upon arrival, I was welcomed and greeted by the receptionist who then took me to the back room to get my scalp tested. Def a unique experience. Then the treatment started. I had the 90 min scalp massage and it was lovely. They started off with doing a scalp analysis with a camera which was really cool to see. You then go into a room where the scalp treatment and upper body massage happens. The only con I would give is that they spend 15 mins or more just putting hot towels on your head and neck and it started to get repetitive. Otherwise everything was heavenly and I would go back in a heartbeat. The only suggestion I would make would be to do an after camera test to see the difference in your scalp after the treatment. read more

I heard about this "head spa," and having never heard of such a thing before, decided to give it a whirl! I was experiencing a days-long tension headache and hoped the scalp massage would help. They had a Groupon special, so I jumped on that and made an appointment. One thing I will note is the Groupon did not have a limitation on when you could go, which I specifically looked for since I was hoping for a Sunday. When I called, however, I was told it was only good Monday through Thursday. The place is welcoming and I was greeted right away. They did a scalp assessment, which was I was relieved to find was not used to upsell me or promote products they sell, and off I went to my room. The scalp massage was heaven! Jack did a great job with that as well as the neck and shoulder. I would definitely be back for that. I didn't love the hair-washing for a few reasons: 1.) The rinse you with a soup and the smell was a little much. You don't leave smelling that way, but it was a long part of the process. 2.) Some of it was nearly scalding, and I LOVE a hot shower. They should check in on the temperature. 3.) The scrubbing was pretty rough (especially after the hot water). I am sure my scalp has never been cleaner, but I would still not do it again. It was too rough and went too long. If you have curly hair, bring some of your own products or prepare to throw your hair in a braid or bun. They tried to blow dry my hair without a diffuser and without any product. I told them I was ok to leave damp (I assumed I would) and they added a little oil. My experience overall was a 3 because the service was not for me, but if they offered a 30- or 45-minute scalp, neck, and shoulder massage, I'd probably be there every week. read more

I bought a Groupon for this. Very relaxing experience as I took a 1+ hour nap during. I did the 100 min experience but it was closer to 2 hrs. They have a ton of snacks from tea eggs to sweet soup and Chinese crackers. They also have us giant apples for Christmas. They scan your scalp in the beginning to show what you need but they don't scan it again at the end to show the difference. Still my hair felt squeaky clean and I haven't had any dandruff for 5 days at least. We will see if I see more hair growth in the coming weeks. read more

This is a brand new facility that just opened. They gut rehabbed this space. Everything is brand new and very nice. It's an elevated experience with a lot of new modern amenities. They have by far the best massage bed with a gel mask face insert (covered) that made for a very comfortable massage. They also use these wonderful aromatherapy, slightly heated, single use eye coverings (see photo). Which was such a pleasant surprise. I cannot say enough good things about TouYuanTang! I saw an Instagram influencer post about it, I went straight to Google, the reviews were fabulous, AND they're running a deal on Groupon! I could not resist! The amenities are, by far, the cleanest I've seen for this type of spa, the space is newly done, the service is so personalized, the front desk English was near perfect, and it doesn't have an odd smell like you might see elsewhere. Off the bat, they took my shoes and offered me pillow sandals alongside a cup of warm tea. Downstairs, I got a combination foot/body massage. The woman's hands couldn't have been softer and the pressure was perfect for me - I didn't want it to end! My entire body felt such relief afterward and my back is feeling loose. I did a couple's scalp massage here a few weeks ago and was super disappointed. It started off well, we went inside and were given water and snacks while waiting for our massages. They then took us to a nice couple's massage room which was clean and very relaxing. One of the best parts of this massage is being able to see your scalp condition before and after using a scalp camera which my boyfriend and I were really looking forward to. We noticed they didn't do a pre-massage scalp check like advertised on their site with this package but we thought they would just do it at the end since no one mentioned anything. However, at the end of the massage when we asked about it they told us all of their scalp cameras were not working. I feel like if I never asked, they would have never told me. When I asked for a discount, we were denied and told "they added extra time to our massage" to make up for it which was not the case because we were in and out of there in exactly an hour which we paid for. During the massage, there was a portion where they use a hand-held shower head to wash your neck and shoulders. The shower head was pointed directly in my ear and I kept telling my masseuse that she was getting too much water in my ear and she continued to do it anyways. My boyfriend's masseuse was not being gentle at all and was scratching his scalp off with the tools. I've had other scalp massages before in Chicago that were a much better experience and significantly cheaper as well so I would not recommend coming here. read more
