Former long-time client.... My last appointment was November 1 when I told Tracy I needed to make my next appointment in January (she was trying to schedule me for mid December). When she asked why, I informed her my partner just got laid off that week and we were down to one income so I needed to watch my expenses. Her response was that I'm not going to find another place cheaper. I tried explaining again that with the holidays and young kids, I had to be mindful of expenses with just my income. I asked if I could call to schedule in January since she told me the first 2 weeks in January wouldn't work. She replied she doesn't do that and walked out of the room. Mind you I have 5 prepaid facials and 2 prepaid sauna sessions that have not been used. In my experience, Tracy was consistently adding on services that I never asked for, so every visit ended up being way more than anticipated. I held on to my review for years... I felt really need giving a low rating to a business that had 5 stars all across the board. But now I see the reoccurring theme of harrassment when appointments need to be rescheduled or cancelled. So here it goes.. Years ago I was seeing Tracy for monthly 20 min facials and maybe a couple custom ones. I was a regular client and was so excited to have found her. Until I had to reschedule my appointment (honestly can't remember the reason but it shouldnt matter). I didnt ask/expect a refund as it was more of last minute. But what did it for me finally, was when she offered a Sunday appointment during the Bears game (by then she knew my Sundays area around the Bears) and I told her I couldn't make it because of the game and she said "are the Bears more important than your skin?" Really lady? That was it for me. There were also a few harassing voicemails and emails to add. But you guys get the point. She does great facials though and as long as your schedule doesnt change, you should be good. read more

I was extremely sick for over a month and had to reschedule two appointments. I figured she would not appreciate be coming in with a fever or coughing on her during my entire facial. I then needed to reschedule again for an out of town work obligation. She questioned my work commitment and refused to reschedule. If I didn't want to continue seeing her, I would have cancelled outright but I made the effort to work with her when I had scheduling issues out of my control. I had recommended her to my friends and neighbors who live right down the street, but will make sure to let them know they should not patronize this business unless they want a mediocre service with a rude and aggressive business owner. read more

I would describe my interactions as toxic at worst and unsettling at best. I would get hugs and sugary sweetness after my tip and next appointment was booked. (pre-Covid, obvi). I would get passive aggression (or just aggression) when I had to rebook. On the occasion I couldn't tip, she confronted me about why. (I am self-employed and was broke--it was so uncomfortable and inappropriate.) I had a year's pass and when I declined to re-up that package, Tracey cancelled my last appointment, never rebooked, never returned my calls. Outside of being theft, it's just kind of funny--considering how fast she would call me when I had to reschedule, asking "What happened?" in an icy and accusatory tone. This review is not about the spa experience. I did not make it to the spa. This is more about the experience of trying to make an appointment for the spa. I wanted to pamper a friend for her bachelorette. She picked out this spa and called the owner, Tracey on Friday 11/22, who said she had availability at 10AM or 2:30PM the following Saturday. I called on Monday to make the appointment and continued to play phone tag with her for the next 3 days. I even tried texting. By Wednesday she finally called me back and left a VM saying that I needed to schedule 6 weeks in advance. I was really confused since she had just told my friend she had availability. I hadn't planned or looked for other spa appointments since I was counting on this and now it was the day before Thanksgiving and I had nothing and was scrambling to make an alternative plan. I didn't understand why she would tell me friend one thing but then tell me I needed 6 weeks advanced appointments. It definitely was disappointing and a negative experience. Especially since her and I never even connected or spoke over the phone. Apparently, business hours do not mean much. read more

Hope this is helpful if you want to get a better sense of this lady's customer service. I was a customer for a couple of months. Tracey, the owner, told me to "go ahead and write a bad Yelp review" and hung up on me after I asked her about a refund. Tracey does good facials, however after the way she treated me on the phone, I think it is important to share the way she dealt with me: I asked her if I could get a refund on the plan I paid for (a series of 4 facials for the price of 3). Due to the whole COVID situation and new rulings in the city, I was uncomfortable continuing facials until a later date. I wanted to ask for a partial refund on the facial series. She told me there are no refunds and that I would get the facials later on when I scheduled. I asked her why I wasn't told about the refund policy before? Her response was: "But you didn't ask. And I don't have time right now to argue with you, go ahead and write a bad Yelp Review. I'm a small business owner" and she hung up on me without even letting me speak. I was very shocked by her response, so I didn't contact her again. She later called me back and left a voicemail stating that this is a "recorded call" and she wants to clarify that the information is on the website. She also said: "per my attorney's assistance, you're advised to cease and desist all badgering and contact against me and my business". This business owner made me feel uncomfortable and disrespected me as her client. Being an honest client who asked a simple question, the way I was treated was very unprofessional. read more

Do not visit here unless you want to be subject to unprofessionalism, passive aggressiveness and rude service. When I scheduled with her over the phone for my very first appointment, I informed her that I do not have availability on the weekdays at all because of long work hours and I can only make appointments on weekends. Tracey repeatedly offered me weekday appointments and insisted on me giving her details of my schedule to justify my weekend preference. At my very first appointment, I did not know how to get in. Tracey saw me pacing back and forth in front of her window and decided to ignore me. When I knocked on the window, she looked up with a glare and pointed at the door and looked away. When I walked, she did not acknowledge me. When she felt like it was time to greet me, she walked over with a fake smile and acted extremely friendly. Who does that? Then during the facial, she asked me why my work schedule was so long. I explained I have a lot of evening commitments for work. Tracey passive aggressively said "Oh, so when you said you were busy, you're not really unavailable." I don't think that I am supposed to provide my availability for every single hour that I am fully free. I can have preferences over my own schedule. I went back and gave her multiple chances. Every appointment was behind schedule for 10 minutes. That is extremely inconsiderate of clients' times and schedules. At one of the subsequent appointments, she invited her product supplier to visit her at the exact time of my appointment. How can she manage to start my appointment and chat with her friends at the same time? The solution was to leave me in the room waiting for 15 minutes. Did she extend my appointment time to provide the 60 minutes that I paid for? No. Did she ever apologize? No. For my last appointment, I couldn't make it back in town due to travel. I tried to cancel an appointment very last minute via e-mail and voicemail, but didn't hear back. The following day, Tracey wrote back "As you know, yesterday was a holiday. I cancelled your appointment." Wow. Pure rudeness. She never rescheduled me. At that point, I was a consistent reoccurring client. How nice is that? Tracey deserves every kind word written about her and Luminere. I have been seeing Tracey for facials and other treatments for four years and I couldn't let someone else touch my face. It's apparent from your first skin treatment with Tracey that she is knowledgeable. She's quick to provide a recommendation on how you can improve your skincare routine and you will see results. I appreciate that she has never pressured me to buy a product or upsold me without me specifically asking her what I can use. And her stuff is GOOD! She prioritizes using natural, cruelty-free products. When it comes to massages, let's just say I wish I could take out an insurance policy on her hands! She can get out the most stubborn of knots. Whenever I'm on her table I sound like a bowl of Rice Krispies...my shoulders go "snap, crackle, pop!" I get so much relief from tension in my neck and shoulders that it helps me breathe better. In fact, if I'm struggling with my asthma and I have an appointment with her coming up, I know that I'll find relief. On a personal level, I find Tracey to be a truly caring, funny, down-to-earth person. She loves her clients (attend one of her aromatherapy classes--they're fun and you can see how much we love her back) and will work with them to find an optimal treatment plan. The quality of what she does is so high and at such a reasonable price, it makes sense that she books up quickly. That being said, I highly recommend that you read and understand her cancellation policy before booking with her. She works hard to fit in as many people as possible, and again, with her personal touch being core to her practice, it's a commitment well worth making. If you have a consistent schedule that doesn't change than yes this is the place for you. If you have a difficult stressful changing schedule, than no. I was pretty open with my difficult schedule and I believe have only rescheduled twice since going to her for almost a year. That being said, I recently had a conversation with Tracy that involved her saying "you seem to not take your skin care seriously or "I have clients that have a crazier and busier schedule than you" and more passive aggressive statements. I kept it polite but quite honestly, in hindsight, is so very unprofessional. I rescheduled because my job schedule is beyond stressful right now. I explained I have 12 hour shifts with no days off. I wanted to sleep. I'm sorry giving you a 4 day notice for wanting to sleep. I still cannot believe I was spoken to like that....I know my situation isn't idea but I just hoped for a little more understanding. She even insisted I come in for a quick 20 min session which quite honestly was confusing and seemed like she was being very pushy. It was as if she cared more about her schedule than mine. I kept this review honest because if you don't anticipate this issue than I'm sure you'll love this place. But honestly I came out of this feeling disrespected and I think it could have been handled better. Good luck Tracy. I genuinely thank you for the experience. I see her monthly for the 20 Minute Skin Treatment with Complimentary Brow Wax, occasionally get a longer facial treatment, and have gotten a back treatment once or twice. All the services are fantastic. For me, the short service is exactly what I had been looking for (no other spas I looked at offered this type of mini-service). It's perfect to keep my skin clear, my brows waxed and enjoy a moment of relaxation. And, the prices are so reasonable that it can be a routine part of my skincare in a way it never was before I started coming to Tracey. I appreciate that she recommends simple products like witch hazel and has never been pushy about buying products like some salons can be. That said, the products she does carry have been great for my skin and I haven't used anything else in years. I had been going here for a few months and scheduling a month out based on how quickly the calendar filled up. I had an appointment this week that I had to reschedule due to a work conflict. Left a voicemail to reschedule and Traci did call back. Though trying to reschedule was painful. She asked why I was rescheduling and if I could take my work meeting from the salon. I said more than once I couldn't make it and would take the next available appointment which seemed to be a month out. I Was ok with that, however she then added if you're pissed, you can just cancel. I was so frustrated that it took more than a few times of me saying I couldn't do it. I understand it's challenging with scheduling, however the lack of flexibility, interrogation and pushing me to keep the appointment was uncalled for. She did say she could ask another client to swap so I could come the same week but she made it sound like it was a burden.. I will not be returning based on this experience. I hate to be the sole dissenter... especially at an establishment in which the owner feels the need to comment on every less-than-stellar review. But I was underwhelmed by the service here, and other people deserve to know. My main complaint is that I was given a recommendation for my oily, blackhead-prone skin that was counter-indicated by every other professional esthetician I have visited since. Tracey recommended witch hazel for exfoliation, which I began applying daily. My skin didn't get better but worse, and when I booked a facial at another establishment (and consequently another one after that), I was told that witch hazel, while an excellent toner, will dry the skin and cause excess sebum, thus blocking the pores and making more blackheads. My facial at Luminere was my first ever, and I'm just now beginning to take my skin care regimen more seriously. My results from this facial was less-than-stellar, but that could have been because my skin was so bad. I also used one of her monthly promotions, but it wasn't a Groupon-type thing (I despise those things, think it's bad for businesses and you usually get bad service). So maybe it was just an off day. I feel bad to have to write this review. In fact, I put off writing this review and left it as a draft for a while. Maybe I had just seen all these positively glowing reviews and had high expectations, but I didn't have nearly a 5 star experience as everyone else. For this realistic review, I'll tell you what it was like for me. It was difficult to get an appointment. There is an option to schedule your appointment online, but they wanted to hold your credit card number. I wasn't comfortable with that so I figured I would call and try to get some questions answered at the same time (such as if there were any last minute cancellations). It took some time later to figure out that it's about a month waiting for a 60 minute facial. Again, not a big deal because her reviews are so great. I was excited in the beginning because Tracey had asked the previous client for a hug at the end of their session, so I thought we were going to have a good conversation or some connection during our session. The facial was average. I used to get them more frequently but it has been years. In the past, I had seen a dermatologist for some breakouts. I had been using a prescription cream for mild acne but wanted to wean myself off. I had asked Tracey's opinion on whether repeat facials will help and she deferred me back to my doctor. It seems that she was not interested in my repeat business. The interaction with the facial was just awkward. The worst thing was that I experienced one cystic-like acne lesion (which I've never had before) 1-2 days later. That only happens when you're too aggressive with extractions and not successful. I lived in Chicago last year for graduate school at Northwestern & while living there my face broke out worse than it ever had before. Multiple blemishes all over my face. So I started researching places for treatment around the Chicago area, and landed on Luminere. I was incredibly pleased with Tracey's treatment. She evaluated my skin and determined the best treatment plan for me. Facials every other week with microdermabrasion once a month. The condition of my skin significantly improved over time. My only complaint is that I would describe Tracey's demeanor as very aloof. Not that I was there to make a friend, my skin was my main priority, but I would never describe her as being warm by any means. After seeing her multiple times a month for months I would expect some sort of familiarity, but that was definitely not the case. The last time I saw Tracey before moving, I had my first cold sore ever and did not know anything about cold sores. It was in the healing phase and when she saw it, once the treatment started, she flipped out on me and cut my appt short. She kept berating me to the point where I almost broke out in tears. I was already self conscious of this thing on my lip that I had never experienced before and she acted almost disgusted with me. She said she would call me to schedule my next appt and I never heard from her again. If you are looking solely for great results but not a warm, welcoming experience then I highly recommend Tracey, she definitely knows what she's doing but has no interest in being your friend. 4 stars are based solely on my results, because that was my main priority, but if I was rating the experience and interaction while being there, I would probably give 2-3 stars. read more

Luminere. After visiting here a few times, just the name of this establishment puts me in a serene place. This really says something considering I'm as Type A as it gets. This place is extremely comfortable and cozy. Absolutely zero pretentiousness. I've come here a few times for Microdermabrasion ($60), and obviously, it's one of my favorite venues -- and an extremely affordable one at that. Tracey does an excellent job and is extremely thorough. Sure, she can be aggressive with extractions, but I prefer that -- I want that guck out of my face -- that's exactly what I'm paying for! As far as the Microderm, she uses a larger wand and a smaller wand for those hard-to-reach nooks and crannies. The entire process takes 60 minutes (including undressing/dressing/paying), and amazingly, I never feel rushed. The only negative I can think of is that Tracey is very booked -- it's extremely difficult to schedule an online appointment with her, so it's labor-intensive bird-dogging her website for openings as you must do this frequently. Yes, I know -- that's actually a good sign. Funny story: After my last microderm/facial, I walked down Diversey Street to catch the train and I had 3 guys (yes, THREE) turn around for a double-take. Occasionally I find a business SO good I'm a little reticent to write a glowing review because I want to keep them all to myself. Luminere is one such business, but Tracey is such a wonderful esthetician that I have to share her with Yelp, even if it makes getting an appointment more difficult :) When I hit 30 I decided to start getting more serious about my skincare. I first saw one of Yelp's very highly rated facialists. She was fantastic but you had to book appointments with her months in advance and each facial ran about $100. She wanted me to come in for these facials 1-2x per month and that was an expense I just couldn't afford. I saw Tracey was also very highly rated and was running a special on Luminere's Facebook page. I went in to see her and the rest is skin-bliss history. I think the thing I appreciate most about Tracey is she is truly one of the kindest people I've ever met and I believe she really cares about each of her clients. She exudes a sense of warmth that immediately puts me at ease and calms me. You get this at a lot of spas, but often it seems "put on" - Tracey is 100% genuine. I had one appointment during a particularly difficult period for me personally and Tracey got me to talk about it, listened to me, and left me feeling much better than when I'd entered her shop. Oh, and the facials are great, of course! Tracey doesn't sell products, so you don't have to worry about her pushing an expensive regime on you. I've asked her for product recommendations and she's always advised reasonably priced, widely available drugstore products. As others have mentioned, in addition to full hour facials Tracey offers $20 20 minute skin treatments with brow wax. Tracey has never tried to upsell me to the full hour - she generally advises that all I need for skin maintenance are the $20 treatments. These have to be, without a doubt, the best beauty deal going in Chicago. I leave after my 20 minutes with my skin looking and feeling great and the best brow wax I've ever gotten. In my late 20s, I decided I needed to actually do something to take care of my skin instead of just complaining or feeling gross about my adult acne/under eye bags/dry winter skin. At that time for me, budget was a big issue. I found Luminere on a website for wellness specials in honor of breast cancer awareness month. I called for a 20 minute facial and eyebrow wax. When, at the end of the appointment, Tracey told me that Luminere was extending the special for another month, I had a weird feeling that she was only doing it just for me. Nearly 10 years later, I continue to have the feeling that Tracey's business is designed only just for me. It seems that Tracey is always going the extra mile to make sure that I feel special and beautiful. The time and attention that she pays in crafting her business and to each individual client, in addition to the beyond fair pricing, make it unimaginable that I could get a better experience anywhere else. I consider myself lucky that I was able to become a client of Luminere before it became a referral-only business. I understand the challenges some people may have because you must schedule your appointments so far out, but once you get in queue, Tracey will make sure you have a monthly appointment without hassle. I will say, as someone who had only had one facial before going to Tracey all those years ago, the only thing that's ever helped my skin has been consistent, monthly facials, even when those facials were only 20 minutes long. It took her less than a minute to diagnose my skin issues ("ah, congestion") and get right to work with steaming, cleaning, and extractions. I will definitely be coming back for the $20 mini facials to maintain my unclogged pore-ness. I also do lash extensions with Tracey, it started out as prep for my wedding, which then turned into me getting married and still wanting the extensions afterward! Again, affordable and definite quality, extensions have made my daily routine so simple and I'm always receiving compliments on them. PASSION Tracey is 150% committed to her work and it shows through her individual attention to each client, her gracious accommodation of busy schedules, and even in her insights shared through her monthly newsletter! Yes, Tracey has her Ph.D. in American Urban History, but her true heart lies in esthetics and wellness. RESULTS I left a top-rated Chicago esthetician for Luminere. No regrets. I am a more relaxed, balanced, and blemish-free gal thanks to Tracey. Pretty sure I could not have survived graduate school without her. I've had a hard time writing this review just because there are so many wonderful things to say about Luminere and Tracey. She's THAT great, really. I've been going to Tracey (the owner and sole esthetician at Luminere) for 3.5 years. I was not one to have regular facials (b/c for a single 20something making a living as a nanny, they're expensive). I would get an occasional Groupon for a facial but never visited the same place twice. Then I found Luminere on the recommendation of my employer and have been getting regular facials ever since. $20 for a 20 minute facial and complementary eye brow wax? YES PLEASE! Such a great price in Chicago and done at such a cute, quiet and peaceful little place. I feel like I should be paying way more. I have never once been offered a product to buy (this is a good thing, in my opinion but I'm sure Tracey would have great products). I guess I'm trying to emphasize that for me, she is the ideal person to go to. If you want to talk the whole time, you get witty banter and yet a calming, serene experience or if you want silence and to drift off during one of her heavenly massages or body scrubs, go ahead. She seems to sense whatever it is I need on that particular day, even if I don't know myself. Her service is impeccable. She is professional yet is such a sincerely sweet person that my bi-monthly appointments feel like I'm going to visit a friend. You'd be a fool to spend your money elsewhere. One caveat is that b/c she is so great, don't expect to call on Friday and get an appt for Saturday. Luminere books pretty far in advance (though there have been times when she's squeezed me in.) To reiterate on what everyone else said, Tracey & Luminere are awesome in quality, experience and price. I'd rather focus on what makes Tracey different from the other MANY options you have in Chicago. - Tracey uses only certified organic products. Organic products can't have the same types of chemicals & artificial coloring and thus, even the most sensitive skin is less likely to react to the products. - The small storefront is charming and cozy, not impersonal and cold. If you are looking for a Spa Space large luxurious spa feel, this isn't it. Here, you get cozy sun-filled waiting area, interesting "green" magazines to read if you have to wait, and wonderful tea to sip on. BTW I've never waited more than 5 minutes. - Easy street parking. Generally free on Diversey and side streets (before 6 pm). - Tracey is a wonderful person and just the sound of her voice relaxes me! - Her prices are affordable. The $20 twenty min facial with brow wax is a regular price. I think her facials are $50 for a 50 min (60 min with time to change clothes etc). You may be coming here for a YouSwoop or Spa Month promotion, but you CAN AFFORD TO COME BACK! - Tracey is proof that the American business model works. Offer people a good product at a fair price and they will be back. By frequenting Luminere you have a direct impact on the local economy. So there you go. Find someplace else that you can be an organically relaxed consumer with bright clear skin, a smile on your face as you rebuild the US economy. All for $20-50 and free parking! read more

I have been coming to Tracy for 3 years now every 5-6 weeks for a mini facial and eyebrow wax. As a dark haired lady I obsess over my eye brows and searched for YEARS for someone who can do them just right - Tracy is amazing! I also have sensitive skin and have had weird reactions to facials at other places but I haven't had a problem since I started to see her. She is professional and really cares about her work and you as the client. I recommend her 100% - she does massages and lashes too! read more
