Toucan Jim's is the veritable oasis its parrothead owners had in mind. Somewhere about an hour northwest of San Antonio, not far from Kerrville, lies Center Point, a little town up in the Hill Country, amongst all the mesquite trees and sprawling ranch land. Straight out of a Corona commercial, this little bar is orders of latitude away from the surrounding landscape. In fact, as you enter (and exit) through the gift shop, you'll find that you're walking on, walking on broken glass.... wait, what? Sand. You're walking on sand. But the two are related. Anyway, the expansive back garden offers plenty of tropical greenery as you sit at tables or under palapas nestled among the palm trees, listening to a band playing under the covered pavilion which also serves as the dance floor. I was volunteering for a week at CAMP Camp in Centerpoint, and the head nurse suggested a group of us check out Toucan Jim's. I can't even remember what my fellow volunteers ordered because I was too busy stuffing my face with some of the BEST fish tacos I've ever shoved into my pie hole! The atmosphere is kinda tongue in cheek, but it's really cute and welcoming. This would be THE place to go for some after work drinky-poos and a bite to eat. I wish they would open a second location in San Antonio...I think it'd go over really well. In any case...go check this place out! read more

What a rare find in the middle of the hill country! You walk in here and it is like you are transported to a lush beach haven. Really, really neat place. The food was standard "bar food" and the cheeseburgers were awesome. The exotic landscaping was like nothing I have ever seen. There are little hideaway areas to sit at and enjoy drinks. The bar was equally as awesome! It literally felt like you were on an island. The frozen drinks were AMAZING!!! A review below says they only have beer and wine but that was about a year ago? They now have a fully bar. I think this would be a great place for kids because you can let them run around and "explore". The area is fenced in and so no worries about them getting to far. One of the owners came up and was just about as nice as you can get. So friendly and told us all about the place. Good people. read more

I am so glad the weather is warming up because I LOVE this place and LOVE to sit outside. They are very accommodating. If we are going late and don't want to miss the kitchen being open (until 8:00 pm), I just call ahead and order. The Taco Salad is great as is the BBQ Burgers and Fish Tacos. There is a change. They now have a Liquor License, but it is located in a dry precinct. So, you just pay a $5 membership fee and join their "private club" and you can order a drink - more than just Beer and Wine, now. It's a great place to visit with friends and enjoy the tropical atmosphere and Thelma, the naked white Parrot (she keeps plucking her own feathers). One of my friends wants to knit her a sweater. When you go in, say "HI" to the staff and let them know you are there. It's a big place (outside) with lots of hidden nooks and crannies named after a tropical island somewhere. Say "Hi" to Jim Lackey, the owner and guy responsible for the lush landscaping. If you had slow service before, give them another chance. Life is slow on the "Island" so slow down and enjoy it. Based on the previous reviews, my party had higher expectations than the reality of the experience. The food was HORRIBLE, the craft beer selection very limited, and good luck paying your bill when time to close out your check! The excuse was a new system- but a single pay station at the bar (on the other side of bar chairs- yes, people could sit there) is not a good design set up. I would only consider going back if I planned to pick up my own beer at the bar, pay at that time (no tab), and carry it to my table. Not really worth it- there are better places down the road in Kerrville or in the other direction in Comfort. read more

A refreshing oasis in a one dog town. The patio is full of plants and good music comes out of no where. I had fried catfish. Succulent and fresh. Served with hush puppies, beans, coleslaw and fries. A lot of good food for a reasonable price. My mate had cheese quesadillas. She said they were good. Service was spot on. This is the kind of place one expects in Austin. Beautiful outdoor seating are and in the middle of July, no mosquitoes in sight (they have some indoor seating too but there were people smoking at the bar and we just don't dig that but it's absolutely not a turnoff). We started with the Toucan Tots, smothered in bacon, cheese, and chili, and holy moly it was good! Could've had just that! Hubby had wings and loved them. I had the Beer Battered Cod (fish and chips) with a tossed salad and it was so good! Sometimes fish and chips is too greasy and this was not. The Toucan Tartar sauce is delish too! It was a great little restaurant off the beaten path. I really enjoyed the chicken quesadilla while my boyfriend enjoyed his fried shrimp. The prices were very reasonable for the amount of food. We sat inside but their outside area is really beautiful as well. They have a bar but you will need your drivers license to become a lifetime member as it's a dry precinct. read more

Toucan Jims has a Great outdoor island feel. We stopped by last minute for dinner and had a great time. The staff was very friendly and they even had live music. You enter through the bar area and stroll down paths till you find a palm frond covered table you like and grab a seat. Their menu is mostly appetizers, burgers and some sandwiches, and they have alcoholic drinks as well. As it's a dry city you'll have to buy a membership to get alcohol. Not sure the price as we didn't indulge this time as we had a long drive home. The virgin Pina Colada was delicious however. My wife had a burger and I had a brisket sandwich and sweet potato fries. All were excellent. The only negative was to be expected in an outdoor restaurant in Hill County Texas in June and that being the humidity. read more

OMG!!!! Drove by this place 4 days in a row and never knew it was here. Checked Yelp for a place to eat that was close to the RV Park and here we are. Next year when we come back here for golf we will definitely bring our whole group. Great concrete dance floor. All the pathways led to so many little areas. They now have a liquor license and you give them your DL to be a member for free. Will probably go back tomorrow just to try some other things. First, I love the atmosphere, but then again, I am a late blooming Parrothead. The food, all of it is fried or grilled, was good, too. However, they have no liquor license, so if you go there expecting a fruity drink made with rum, you will be disappointed. Beer and wine coolers only. Timing also is important. This was the most cuties tropical atmosphere for the hill country, it was like being on a tropical island. Full of color and life. They had indoor and outdoor seating and coverage everywhere. Mike gave us a tour of the place and he was as friendly as you own family member. I had the fish taco's which were amazing, my husband had the sausage rolls and those where just as good. Staff was top notch and friendly; we will be back as soon as we make another trip to that area. read more

Very nice vibe at this place... kinda strange considering it is such a small town. Colorful locals adorn this island themed bar. Decent drink prices and decent food. Explore the outside bar area, where all table are named after tropical islands or countries. Palm trees, tiki masks and lush plants provide a nice backdrop for lunch or dinner with friends. About a week ago, I went with a couple of friends and really enjoyed the atmosphere and food and drinks, until the end of the night. My two friends who are gay had put an arm his boyfriend and a man with a white beard (who I was later informed was the brother in law of the owner) came up to my two friends and told them "that isn't allowed here". Keep in mind we were at a corner table with NO ONE around and it wasnt like they were making out. Then he continued to watch us for the remainder of the time we were there. This brought my friends to tears so we paid our bill and left. Our waitress was awesome, but that was unacceptable. While we were walking out, a couple of the employees (who were off) were drinking in the inside bar, and were talking about what kind of porn they watch very loudly. So to be watched and discriminated against while it's own employees were being more inappropriate is beyond me. Will not be coming back and will make sure to let my friends and family know of my experience. read more

A touch of the islands in a town of ~500. Some of the friendliest people you will meet. Recommend Fish Tacos, cheese fries, Toucan Salad. Only negative is extremely inconsistent hours in the winter, but counterbalanced by live music in the summer. read more
