I was greatly overcharged for a tow of our car after an accident which occurred close to our house…read more The police called a Sniffen's tow truck which towed the car less than half a mile to our house. The tow driver (Sniffen's Towing, contracted through Kuni's Auto) refused to unhook our car unless we gave him an immediate cash payment of $240.00. He threatened to tow our car back to his company's lot on the other side of the island if we didn't pay cash immediately. The driver said he could not accept credit cards. I called the Sniffen's company number painted on the side of his truck and was told that the driver was correct to ask for cash payment and that $240.00 was the correct amount for a tow of less than a half mile distance. The tow driver revved his engine and threatened to take our car away if we did not give him cash immediately. A friend had to drive one of us to an ATM to get the cash so that he wouldn't leave with our car. When we had time to research it, we found out that as per Hawaii State Law, the charge should have been no more than $55+$15 for Sunday and less than $6.50 for mileage to about $76.50. We were overcharged by about $163.50. The law states that tow drivers must accept credit cards. The law also says that the police should first give the car owner the option to call the towing company of their choice in case of a disabled car. We were given no such option. (She could have called Triple A.) I called the police to question their choice of towing company and was told that this company is contracted by the police and is the one they are required to use. My husband called Sniffen's Towing/Kuni's Auto to complain, and was told to "come down and show us your balls". No joke. We complained to the Office of Consumer Protection to get our money back and Consumer Protection wrote a letter to Sniffin's demanding that they refund the overpayment to us. Sniffin's never refunded the money. I called Consumer Protection and they said that those tow companies never pay. I went to the Sniffin's place of business and asked them to refund our money. They said, "Go ahead and try to prove it in court. You will never win."

After providing the exact same explanation of my situation to him that I had shared with all the previous tow companies I had contacted earlier he was the only one who without hesitation said he could do it, provided a price, and even offered an alternative solution that was even better than what I was planning. Set up a date/time for the removal and aside from needing to bump the time frame a few hours from the original time, Dennis showed up and did exactly what he said he would. We just left the family home in Kailua when we heard a horrible grinding noise. We couldn't figure out what the problem was but we knew we couldn't continue to drive it. We called everywhere and no one could come out, either they were intoxicated or just didn't want to work on a holiday. I get it, everyone has a life and ohana is important. However, this is too common in Hawaii, these guys only come out when they want. Thankfully my husband found RJ's Towing. This young braddah was very professional, very kind, and came out in less than an hour. He carefully hooked up the car and towed us back to our auntie's house.
