Long and short of it: Good Food Abysmal Service Yikes, Yikes, YIKES. My friend and I were in from out of town and were excited to try this place for brunch because we had heard good things, but this ended up being one of the worst and most confusing dining experiences of my life. To start, when we were first seated, our server seemed unable to remember our fairly simple orders. That was my first clue it was going to be an interesting experience. They had specialty coffee drinks on the menu all priced at $10. Most had coffee and two kinds of alcohol in them. I ordered a latte with Baileys and Kahlua (both options were in the menu drinks as well). First of all, although cappuccinos and other espresso drinks were on the menu, the server wasn't sure if he could make a latte. My friend and I (who have both been baristas) had to verbally instruct him how to do it. We could see the espresso machine from where we were sitting and he WAY over steamed the milk. What he ended up bringing me was a 'latte' with a shot of Baileys and a shot of Kahlua on the side, which was fine. So we order our food. I got the Brisket with Yucca fries and an added egg, and my friend got a vegetable omelet. The omelette came with 'seasonal greens' in it, and when me friend asked, the server told us it was spinach. They brought some water in a bottle that tasted like dirt. When we finally found our server to comment on this, he told us people have said that before and the bottle changes the flavor so instead brought us some fresh water. If you have been told this before, CHANGE IT!? Don't keep serving it in the same bottles! So some time goes by, and soon it's been nearly 30 minutes and we haven't seen our waiter. After some prodding about what was taking so long, we were told there was a Christmas show going on in the back and they had a group of about 20 people. If they were so backed up it was going to affect their service, they really should have mentioned it before we decided to eat there. They hadn't given us any kind of food or bread for the table, and now it was getting close to 45 minutes-1 hour with no food. My friend had to go on a hunt to find our waiter. When my friend finally found him, they told him that they had dietary concerns and needed to eat and asked if they could bring our bread or something. The waiter refused. Finally since it was obvious we were dissatisfied, the manager came over. He apologized and offered to bring us something to eat while we waited for our food after we explained the situation. By the time he brought us something, the food had already arrived, so while it was nice, it was a bit too late at that point. Our food was good once we finally got it. Except the 'seasonal greens' turned out to be carrots.... And while we were eating, literally about seven times our waiter and other waiters came to apologize for the service...which was nice the first time and ridiculous the fifth, sixth, and seventh. When we finally received our bill, they hadn't even comped anything besides the snack they brought us. AND although similar coffee drinks on the menu were $10, they charged me $4 for a latte plus $7 for each shot. A total of $18 for a coffee. More than my friend's entree cost. On top of that, they charged me for two extra eggs instead of one. We brought this to the attention of the waiter who spoke to the manager. He then returned and told us our drinks were comped (which should have been done anyway as far as I'm concerned) And I pointed out that, while that was nice, they still charged me for two eggs instead of one. His response was 'okay, but we comped the drinks so...' and they made me pay for an egg I did not receive. Over all, don't come here if you don't have a lot of emotional energy to deal with incompetent staff. read more

One of my restaurants/venues to see and hear live music. Food is always so good. Service always polite and courteous. They always get great talent to perform. Love the layout and décor. You can tell a lot of talent have played here. I appreciate the Covid policy that they put in place. Their motive is to keep their staff, performers and guests safe. How can you blame them for that? The hospitality business was hit so hard during the shut down of 2020. They are doing their part to prevent that happening again. Reading these negative reviews because of the covid policy is unfair to the the establishment. I hope all businesses adopt this policy. I'm giving the Towne Crier 5 stars, would probably give 4.5 if I were able. I did something strange - went there twice in a weekend. The first was a Saturday Brunch. Kayla was our waitress. Superb service from her. My grad school bud had the Huevos Rancheros, and I the Smoked Salmon platter. He enjoyed his, looked right sized. I loved my platter - seasoned eggs, cucumbers, tomatoes, smoked salmon and a fantastic dill cream cheese spread with a petite bagel. I thought it wouldn't be filling but it was. THEN we had dessert. The owners wife was a pastry chef at a high end NYC hotel for years, and it shows. I had the greatest slice of carrot cake EVER. He had a great sour cream tart. So the next day I took my wife, as I really wanted to try the lamb burger. She had the Huevos, same good quality. The lamb burger was tiny, like Where's the Beef commercial tiny. I addressed it, the owner came and apologized (said the cost of the lamb is 2x the beef, I get that). The replacement beef burger was perfect. Kayla took care of me again - great service. They should probably raise the lamb burger another $3-$5 and serve a normal portion, or just take it off the menu. But great brunch spot, and I'll be back! read more

Hostile to visiting musicians. I don't know if this is who should hear this, nor do I care. Today I travelled for 4 hours by boat to play at open mic. I then walked 25 minutes so that I could sign up for an early slot, so that I could get back to the boat, my home for 12 years, before it got dark. I played here last year with the same scenario. Early slot. Played here 3 weeks ago, with the same scenario. Early slot. Tonight, it's draw names from a hat for slots.....which gave me the prospect of walking back to the river in the dark, riding a dinghy back to my home in the dark...all a little too dangerous. Do what you want....I'm sure that your locals will tolerate it. I play open mics up and down the eastern seaboard. It's not the first place to make it clear that visiting musicians are 2nd class guests. I made all this clear to the hostess. Apathy. Couldn't care less. Came for dinner on a Wednesday Open Mic night. Our first visit. Our food was excellent. I had the Ropa Vieja. Partner had the fish tacos. The beef in mine was very tender and tasty. Very generous portion of meat and rice. Agave chips were large wedges that seemed roasted. She said her fish was fresh and very good. But, flavor of the tacos nothing exciting. As an appetizer the three were adequate. Need more to make a meal. Our server was very nice. Seemed to really know the menu and how everything was prepared. Appeared to care that we enjoyed our choices. Wish we had saved room for dessert. The entertainment was a mixed bag. Overall, we heard some really good and memorable performers. Have been here a number of times and have always enjoyed it, but after tonight, we will not be returning. The food was excellent, as always; portions were small for the price but this could be overlooked if not for the bad experience we had with the service. This has really soured us on the Towne Crier. 1.) We waited over an hour for our food, after ordering quickly upon being seated. We understand things happen and I am especially patient given the challenges restaurants are facing during COVID-but this was egregious. 2.) While each person who came to our table was apologetic upon learning we'd been waiting, this didn't result in our food coming any faster-it was also impossible to tell who our server was, and when we asked for the check at the end of the meal we were asked who'd been helping us as a response. 3.) When the food came, it arrived in a staggered manner so that a full 15 minutes passed before the other person got their food. Nobody seemed to be concerned about this until we brought it to their attention. 4.) We were offered a free dessert to make up for the lateness of our meal, but declined due to medical reasons. The server said 'ok' and walked away without any other concessions. 5.) I would be remiss if I did not mention that the manager was fully aware of all of this the entire time. I've noticed that the manager of this establishment responds pretty extensively to any less than stellar reviews-I am not writing this to cast aspersions on or to take away from the impact of this restaurant on the community of Beacon, but given all the missed opportunities given for the front of house staff to rectify what was a pretty clearly negative dining experience and the fact we shelled out $60+ for our meal, it felt important to give feedback. read more

I went to the town crier café January 31 to see Judy Collins perform. The show started at 8:30 PM, but I had made a dinner reservation for 7 PM.I arrived promptly at 7 PM and was greeted warmly by a gentleman at the front desk. He said go right in and I followed A staff member into the café. I saw it was extremely crowded. Being just me I was seated at a two-person table near the side of the stage. A very good vantage point, even though was on the side of the state rather than facing the front of the stage.Very soon after I sent down, I was warmly greeted by a waitress who said her name was Terry. I was provided with the menu and asked if there's anything I wanted before ordering. I just got an ice water. I decided to get the chicken Panini with salad.There were some regulars seated next to me. They were talking to Terry the waitress who was serving she had come over from the original location in Pawling New York. She said she was a long time employee of the town crier. My food came out about 12 minutes after I ordered it.Instead of having salad next to the Panini, they were french fries. I pointed this out right away and Terry was very nice and apologetic and said she'll fix it right away. It only took about three minutes and the proper side was on the plate. The Panini was a good size and tasty. The salad was also good but the salad dressing was a little bit too strong. I noticed the food that other people and ordered and the portions were a good size as well. Especially the chicken quesadilla. I would think it would've been small in a place like this but it was not. Terry Was an excellent server, she briefly chatted with the regulars and made me feel very welcome. Judy Collins was absolutely fantastic and sounded wonderful. She put on a two hour show. She sang where have all the flowers gone, a Pete Seger song, in tribute to Pete, who passed away one year ago.It was a very moving and emotional heartfelt tribute, to a selfless kind generous man who touched,many people with his music. As well as being a early influence to Judy Collins and a great friend throughout the years. It's amazing how at 75, her voice can sound so good. She does 120 shows a year,which is quite remarkable, because they are performers who are much younger that struggle with doing that number of shows. She told stories and joked around between the songs. Judy ended the evening with a fantastic rendition,Of Amazing Grace, which the audience join in on. My experience at the Towncrier café was excellent. The space is very nice and the acoustics and intimacy of the room, really make it a great place to see many different types of musicians perform. The food was very good and Terry who served my area was on the top of her game all night. Even though I come from Rockland County a 45 minute drive to Beacon. I've eaten here many many times, have brought out of town friends and family...always amazing. The burger is a special house blend of meet that is second to none!! The tofu curry is to die for!! The mixed drinks are ALWAYS spot on, hand crafted, no pre-mix junk in your Old Fashion. The bottle selection is the best in town and the beers on tap are first class. Staff - young and attentive!! great crew. Go...go now!!! They take Covid regulations VERY seriously. It's a pleasure to relax there. And I didn't even get to mention the music which is what this whole place was build on. Doesn't matter if it's a scheduled artist or an open mic, it's only the best of the best. I went here to grab a bite to eat with a girlfriend of mine on a Wednesday night. It was 6:30pm when we arrived. We stood at the entrance for about 10 minutes to be seated.... then a bartender told us to just pick a seat and she would send someone to us shortly. I noticed while waiting they seemed to be setting up for "open mic night" .... after choosing a table in the back corner it took another 10 minutes for some one to ask us what we wanted to drink. At this point the band's have started to play.... it wasn't until 7:30 that someone came to take our order. He was a very nice gentleman, but he seemed to be the only one there working. The food didn't come out until about 8, and honestly by that time I wasn't that hungry. It was served with no napkins and no utensils. Had to wait another 5 minutes for those. It was a shame because I really did like my waiter, he seemed really nice, but the wait time was just beyond ridiculous. To top it all off, while we were waiting for the check, some white haired older man comes over to my table. I thought he was a manager and was going to ask us how the food was. Instead, he proceeded to tell us to be quiet that people were complaining that we were loud, very rudly and then he hurried away. Now.... let me paint this picture for you. Me and my friend were barely talking at all, and that's due to the fact there was a room stuffed with people and a band playing so loud you'd be lucky to walk out of there with ear drums still in tact. So no, we really weren't saying much and when we did, it was between the performances. My friend looked at me and said "what just happened and what is he talking about ?"... when the waiter came back with our check we explained what happened. He said that guy is an asshole (exactly his words) that he doesn't even work there, he just hosts the open mic nights, and that he does that all the time to people forgetting that it is a family restaurant. He apologized perfusly and said no such complaints were ever made and that who could possibly hear people talking over those speakers anyway? And he was right. As we got up to leave a family with 3 young children walked in to be seated. As they sat down I saw that same white haired gentleman head their way to stand next to their table. I can just imagine what he will say to patronize those customers. If you are going to go to this place, do not go on an evening where something is being hosted. I didn't want to make a scene, but I am really mad that that man comes in and can run off customers like that. Not a way to run a business. If you do not work there do NOT talk to the customers as if you do, and offer out fake complaints on situations. I didn't know when having dinner at a restaurant your not allowed to socialize! Avoid avoid avoid ! I'd probably never go back because of my crappy experience. I felt bad that the waiter had so many tables and no help, but that's the restaurants fault for not properly staffing. As for the white haired man, he needs to stuff a sock in his mouth and be quiet. As for the performances, it's open mic. Some are pleasant, others were horrible and hard to sit through. The comedians that happened to be there this particular night weren't funny at all. Only the friends of the people performing seemed to enjoy it. Other diners seemed uninterested. ..... and that is my honest review of this place. I wish I could have said something better. As a person born and raised here in Beacon I love to see all these new businesses popping up here in town, but not if they are going to be having service such as this. I'll pass. read more

I guess if I was just grading on their food I'd give them a different rating but Towne Crier is a live music venue first and restaurant second. They get world class talent and the cover prices are always very reasonable - especially considering the fact that the artist that play here don't have many options in the Hudson Valley (Turning Point is the closest "competition"). The one thing they have on Turning Point is PARKING !!!!! I've been to several sold out shows and always have been able to find parking nearby. There really isn't a bad seat in the place. There are a few poles but the way the tables are laid out makes them less disruptive to the view - that said, I would recommend getting there early if you don't want to take the chance. The sound is always perfect, never too loud but loud enough not to hear if people are talking. I have been there enough times that I've sat in every corner and there are no bad spots. As a vegetarian I would love to see more options. When I go I usually have the hummus and a pint or 2 of beer. The prices seem reasonable for their dinners but I can't really be a good judge being I've had so little off of the menu. The staff is always friendly. read more

The venue is a great intimate space to see any show - this review is about the food only! Was happy to receive their email about a new menu but its a shame that nothing has changed. It's missing the basics. What if I don't want whole wheat pizza or figs? How about just a standard with & without pepperoni? No tacos, No munchies: veggie w/dip, chips/pretzels/popcorn/nuts? Offer me something besides desserts. I ordered their chili wings terrible and slime-y I sent them back. My husband had the burger which was ok but not as good as the beacon dinner down the street. We ordered a Merlot it was both stinky and sucky and not as good as the wine bar next door. I would have returned it if I hadn't already returned the Wings. Do yourself a favor - continue to eat & drink first. They continue to offer good looking desserts & our waiter was solid! My first time there and not sure I'll be back. The general manager, Greg was rude and obnoxious from the time we walked in. We were there trying to support a good friend who was playing there. We followed "the rules" and each member of our party ordered a meal. Sadly one entree was not brought until we said we were missing it and my entree was dumped on to my shoulder winding up on the floor. Accidents happen and are totally understandable, but to have this ignored by the pompous Greg the manager was not. What was also unacceptable was watching others enter after us, have a drink and not be "forced" to order food as we were. The whole experience was disappointing to say the least. We paid $250 to have a manager be rude and unprofessional, food dumped on me and a meal forgotten, as well as being placed far away from the music because we didn't have a reservation....all while the establishment was empty!!!!! The place was grossly understaffed. There was live music and the place was fairly full but I counted all of two servers the evening (who I rarely saw on the floor). If we hadn't invited a friend from out of town to join us, we would have left. It took 50 minutes for our drinks to come to our table (including water) and more than that for our food to show. The soup I ordered wasn't even hot by the time it arrived. My boyfriend ordered a cheeseburger which came without cheese. We had a party of three but were never given the proper amount of silverware or napkins-the entire time. It was just a very poor, unacceptable experience. I give one star for having a full bar and decent menu but the service is deplorable. I really wanted to like this place but this is the second time I've visited and both times have been disappointing (the first time was when they first opened and the food wasn't seasoned well and their bar wasn't fully open yet). The live music is nice but it would have been great to be asked if we had a preference where we could sit. There were people sitting all over and still plenty of empty tables but we got stuck in a congested spot where it felt rude to talk. I didn't complain because as I said, it was short staffed but I'm not sure if that mattered since as I mentioned, I hardly saw my server on the floor or anyone from the staff. read more

I decided to be good and take the healthy route and have their veggie burger, and asked for the plantains on that instead. I thought it was a little messed up to charge an extra $4 just because they were going to put plantains on one sandwich versus another to be honest. I passed by while in town and saw there was free music FREE! The atmosphere is great, comfy couches in the front and nice ambience. The jazz was outstanding, a 16 yr old girl got up and joined on guitar and she was incredible. I ordered from the menu-- a meat and grain dish with yucca fries.. (roja .. something) the meat was tender and the flavor great. The waiter had a great smile and although very busy, he was attentive. I had the chance to thank the owner who was pleased to hear I had a great night. After my meal another show started in the next room- he let me peak in-- you would never know there was another full listening room in there. After 10 minutes our server came over and took drink orders. She returned with the drinks and we ordered at 7:15. At 8:05 I asked server what was happening with our meals. She went to check, returned and said manager said kitchen backed up. The band started at 8:10 we were served at 8:20, and proceeded to eat in the dark. My wife's 'Greek' salad had no visible feta cheese and no a single olive even though both are noted on menu. The grilled chicken was thin cutlets way over cooked, dried out and not worth eating. I had the Gumbo which arrived luke warm, had decent flavor but even the chunks of chicken were bland dried out and not worth eating. Go somewhere else - there are way better places to eat in / around Beacon. We wandered in and I didn't check yelp beforehand. In retrospect I wish I had checked. Anyway - the food was way subpar. The lamb shakshuka was WAY overcooked and rather flavorless for a dish that's supposed to have some flavor and spice to it. The Salmon brunch was fine. I mean, it's smoked salmon and a bagel - so can't really mess that up. Service was extremely slow even though the restaurant wasn't packed. When the manager comes over and says "I'm the complaint department and am now open" we knew he was not ready to resolve anything..... he did not Listen, Empathize or work on any type of Resolution he just wanted to blame us for them running out of food, when we never even got our food order?? It even took them 25-30 minutes to get our table the drinks we ordered, however this he had a good excuse for - there was a show in the back and they could not make drinks fast enough-- great problem to have if you know how to handle it, unfortunately they don't?? I have enjoyed the music and dining at this venue for many years but recently I had two meals over one weekend that showed the excellence and versatility of the chef and made writing a review an absolute must. I was wowed by the chicken piccata: tender, beautifully seasoned, and replete with pasta and fresh vegetables. Entirely different but no less delicious was the Greek salad with grilled chicken. Had Sunday Brunch with six of my girlfriends. There was free music (tips requested for the three piece band playing Hawai'i music). Everything on the menu was under $20.00. The waitstaff took proper COVID-19 precautions. Phil, the owner, and Greg, the front end manager, made you feel so welcome that you felt you were an honored guest in their home. Their restaurant and ladies restroom were immaculate. Had a burger. Their portions were generous. Everyone loved their meal. Among our group, two women went weekly. It's expensive though. $16 just for the burger and fries, but $2 extra for cheddar (or $3 for goat, which was delicious), plus another $2 for sauteed onions or mushrooms (I got mushrooms). I LOVED the Cuban sandwich, and so did my fiance. Really crunchy. Got it with a side salad which was nice. We also ordered sparkling rose, which i didn't love but that's just my preference. We didn't have reservations on a Saturday night when there was live music beginning at 6pm, but they found us a table for 4 immediately, and could still see the stage. The restaurant had a decent amount of people but the service was still spot on. I would come back on another live music night. I wouldn't go there JUST for the food cause of the higher prices, but it's worth the extra few bucks per meal when you have live music to listen to and bop your head to in between bites! Really dissatisfied with the meal we received. Every time we came here, we loved everything and were willing to pay the price for such good food. Something changed though. The flat bread pizza was served on a pita bread where as before it was actually flat bread. Too much sauce not enough toppings. The price did not match the size for sure. read more

I'm never going back. We had snacks and drinks while catching a show a few months back with TERRIBLE service but I just assumed it was a bad night. Nope. We did a dinner reservation for a show in November. We were seated promptly but after we ordered it was 45 minutes until our food came. Then it was another 30 minutes before we saw a server, and that's only because we flagged him down. 45 minutes later, my mother in law got her scoop of ice cream that she ordered for dessert as well as the food that we wanted packed up...well that's not true - they packed up the wrong food. The show was great. But looking around at those who came for drinks and a show, they were experiencing equally slow service. I'd rather just see bands I enjoy at a venue that's worth visiting. read more
