My wife and I came here for breakfast one morning and had a great meal. It's a small place, but had enough seating for the day we were there. Loved the decor inside and the place settings. The waitress was very nice and really hustled to keep things moving. She's been there for awhile; there's a painting hanging on the wall with her and others. It feels like a very local establishment. There was a mix of locals and out of staters the day we swung by. Our coffee and food was really good. And very reasonably priced. I wish I remembered what we paid, but I remember looking over the tab to make sure they didn't leave anything off. Give this place a try if you're zipping up or down Rt. 30. Often that is due to the fact that the place is full and the staff is few. If you are in the area you have to understand that not everything is about rushing, life can appear a little slower if you are from "the big city". After a few days in VT we were headed back to New York, in search of a hearty breakfast and a place that could accommodate our group and wouldn't require us to go too far off path. A sliver of cell phone service came through and I found Dam Diner on my Yelp app, just in the nick of time. Honestly, it was perfect. Plenty of space, a friendly staff and amazing diner food. The menu was traditional but extensive; Dam had all the favorites, plus a specials board on the wall with another 12-15 items, and a dessert menu with pies, shakes and anything you could really want. And it was all so affordable! I settled on the sausage, egg and cheese breakfast sandwich on a homemade biscuit, with home fries that were freshly cut, and a mixed fruit pie to top it off. I am updating my review...after eating here several more times I actually found some great things on the menu. They have great eggs and breakfast sammys...and their home fries are good too. Okay, first off, the name--it's called "The Dam Diner" because its next to the Townshend Dam. Get it? The one other reviewer commented that the Dam Diner is a "locals only" place, but that the food was decent and affordable. So far as diners go, doesn't that explain most all of them? So I'm a bit perplexed that he/she only gave this diner 3 stars. As far as the "locals only" comment, that's pretty much true. But that only tells half the tale. The locals in these parts are absolutely fascinating, very quirky but also very sincere. Some of the folks you'll see here will make you forget all about the food--and I mean that in the best possible way, I look forward to the day I'm considered a "local" myself. I think the food here is great, so far as diners go. I've eaten here at least a dozen times, and can't think of a "bad" meal that I've had. Breakfast here is a no-brainer, everything is good. So is dessert. Price is extremely reasonable. And the service is always fast--though often quirky. Just the way it is in these parts. read more

The diner is located between West Townshend and East Jamaica on Rte. 30, and you'll probably find the parking lot out front looking pretty busy. Inside it might be even busier because there's limited staff. So, adjust. Calm down. It will probably take a while to get your order taken and your food served. It's worth it. The food is darned good; the honey dipped chicken would do a four-star restaurant proud, and the turkey reuben was expertly made (with hand-cut fries, too). We weren't locals or regulars, and a lot of folks there appeared to be, but we never felt like "outsiders." Maybe because we weren't pushy, rushed or anything but happy to be where we were. Talk about a small town New England diner..............you'll get a stare walking in unless you're a local but the food is worth the initial awkward silence that comes with that "record stop" moment. Waitress has a dry sense of humor but warms up to you so long as you leave the big city attitude outside in the car. She has no problem telling you off but can get very friendly by meal's end. I can only comment on breakfast but for the money is the best breakfast I've had......maybe it just tastes that much better after a night of drinking and before a day of skiing. I eat at the Dam Diner every month or so. Yes, it's for the locals, but everyone enjoys it, because it's good home cooking, large portions and a very reasonable price. We stopped here on our drive down Memory Lane...my grandparents used to come here constantly. We were a party of 5 for lunch. I can't speak for everyone else's lunch, but mine was awesome. I had their Thanksgiving sandwich special, which was exactly as is sounds: house toasted turkey, stuffing, sharp cheddar, and cranberry sauce on grilled white bread. Oh, and hand cut fries. I thought the Dam Diner was good. It feels old fashioned, Vermont, friendly, cozy, basically what I was looking for in a small town diner. We walked in and were greeted by a friendly waitress, we could sit wherever, it wasn't all that busy that Saturday at about 6 pm. Only a few other families were dining there at the time. I was rather intrigued at the breadth of the menu, there's a lot of options, but I was impressed that everything we ordered was done well. What was good: -Thanksgiving sandwich -the chili (thought this was very good) -Jalepeno and cheese poppers -Milkshakes -ice cream sundaes My SO ordered a rib dish, don't remember what it was called, but she enjoyed that as well. Tip: This place isn't exactly cash only, but I think they have to call in credit cards. I last visited the Dam Diner in May, 2012 and now again on November 21, 2012 while visiting family in Vermont for Thanksgiving. It is even better than ever to now earn a five star rating from me. We went around 6:15pm and easily found a table for two with Julie as our server; she was just great even though she had many tables to attend. The place was full when we left as they close at 8pm. I had the stuffed turkey with sides of fresh whole baby beets and the best fried sweet potatoes. Since my sister only had the Shepards Pie we shared an order of beer battered onion rings which were exceptional. She could only consume half of the huge order of Shepards Pie, so took the rest home. Being full, I took home a piece of my favorite carrot cake for later that night. We met a nice couple from Newfane, VT at the next table who told us about the Sumner House historic restaurant in Charlestown, NH which they also like, so maybe on my next trip to VT, we shall try it, but I still must go to the Dam Diner. I can just not report enough great things on the menu at the Dam Diner and I really need to try more of them instead of usually ordering the stuffed turkey. We have a family friend who has a house nearby and he and his wife always told us how great it was. They come here all the time and for many many years. This place was a hidden secret for so long and this place is full of locals, it kind of stinks that it's online now because well now I'll have to wait even longer to sit down! Stopped in to this diner to check it out and was not impressed at all. The best thing about this place is the collection of green kitchen utensils behind the counter. The food was basic at best. The space felt like decorating was a complete afterthought. The lighting is really poor and feels like your in someone's converted garage. While the food is eatable, it was was nothing I would ever go back to unless it was my only option.
