House Salad with Grilled Chicken (5/5!)
    Hanna T.

House Salad with Grilled Chicken, 5/5: The salad was really good and they're very generous with the grilled chicken. The chicken was so juicy and flavorful; would get again! The balsamic vinaigrette dressing was really good, not heavy. One of the best salads I've had. The booth is a bit small. We went for a welcome lunch, perfect for a somewhat casual meal. It was wasn't too crazy during lunch on a weekday.

Came here with a group and it was nice since they got our table ready super quickly! Good: - The place had so many food options - Loved the $1 oysters and got 12 of them - super fresh and tasted like the ocean - I liked the clam chowder soup - very big portions and tasty - The dessert was delicious too - we got the chocolate cake - A good place for a friends and family reunion Bad: - Pretty dim lighting and felt super dark - Food took a while to get there - It was pricey! Overall it was a nice experience but due to price will likely not go again.

I booked this spot for a birthday party with around 50-60 people, and it turned out to be such a great choice. The space itself is awesome: really good energy, plenty of room, and all of our guests kept commenting on how much they liked it. Communication in the whole process leading up to the event was great. We were in touch with John, who was so friendly and patient (I had so much pre-party anxiety - I never organize things like this:) During the party, Arthuro and our rockstar bartender Gabriel were fantastic: super friendly, attentive, and just all around great guys. We also ordered pizzas for the group, and they were great. I'd absolutely host another event here.

We did our company party here. They worked with our very sad budget of $25 per person-yes $25 per person in SF - other venues in the area wouldn't even let us walk in the door with that budget but they worked with us. The food was OK nothing too exciting, drinks were good. The staff was amazing, very friendly very helpful and kept up with our large party. I haven't been here besides for our company party so I don't know how it is for a regular meal but I am sure it's just as nice.

White mussels, red gnocchi, garlic bread

The food here was pretty good, albeit on the heavier side, more akin to bar food than a nicer sit-down meal. Our table shared the gnocchi, mussels, garlic bread, and some cocktails which were overall very flavorful and well portioned. The ambiance was a little weird - we were seated upstairs which was tackily decorated in multicolored wall-draped string lights. It very much felt like a low-end corporate team building event venue than a proper restaurant. The music choice was also off (EDM covers of pop songs that charted 10 years ago - think Ed Sheeran, the Weeknd, and Clean Bandit on repeat) although we noticed the downstairs speakers were playing something different so maybe this was a technical one-off. I suspect being seated upstairs also contributed to the slower service. We had to ask for more water, dessert menus, and the bill, and other tables around us did the same. I would come back here to try their other food and drink offerings but for first-timers would advise to set your expectations lower than what the pictures and menu online telegraph.

    Grilled New York Steak.

The service was slow at first, and we just blew it off like whatever. Then the waiter shows up and is like 'ready to order?' Which is normal enough. We order some drinks, then order an appetizer, the crab cakes, and our entrees. The crab cakes never come, and the New York steak I ordered medium rare came in as medium well. I also ordered another beer which they forgot about and gave up on mentioning. To be fair, there was a group in front of us. So don't come when a group is in front, and pray they get the steak temperature right. Other than that... the bathroom was clean!

Total disappointment. We came here in NYE. We made a reservation with a 24 hour credit card cancellation fee, which would've been totally fine if it were actually a cool place, but it was so very not. There was no one there, maybe two people downstairs and two people upstairs. We had a group of 7 and reserved bar seating. The bar was completely empty, but they still brought us upstairs to a table next to a couple, who were the only people up there. It was super awkward because there was no music. It was completely silent and empty. It almost felt haunted or like we were being punked. Ok whatever. We asked to move so they moved us to a high top downstairs. Don't forget that there was basically no one there it was a little early, 6:30 PM, but it's not like it was 2pm. OK, whatever, let's make the best of it. We were excited about the $1 Oysters, it was basically why we went there. They had the sign out, we were ready to go. No oysters. It's not like they could've run out when there was no one there, and if they didn't want to serve the dollar oysters on New Year's Eve because it was "so crowded," I get it... But bring the sign inside. We all had a drink and shared some sweet potato fries, and garlic fries. I only tried the sweet potato fries, and they were pretty darn good, and I heard that the garlic fries were good too. I don't even remember the drink, so it clearly didn't stand out. I'm not sure why I gave it three stars. Now that I'm reading all this if it's more like a two star, but I like to give them the benefit of the doubt that they were having a really, really, really bad day. Standouts: the fries.

    My reservation.

My visit was initially rejected due to the lack of available spots. I thought I was right and left a negative review, but it turned out that I had made a mistake. Update: The owner of the café reached out to me personally and resolved the situation. I truly appreciate his effort and concern. It was a pleasure to deal with an owner who genuinely cares about his customers. Thank you, Sir. For everyone reading this: if you experience poor service, write a review. It is often the only way for owners to become aware of problems, as they cannot be present all the time or see the full picture. In my case, I accidentally made a reservation for the wrong date and mistakenly thought the staff were being unpleasant. Despite this misunderstanding, the owner contacted me, investigated the situation, and clarified what had happened. Please pay close attention when making reservations.

It was easy to make a reservation through OpenTable in advance. They let us choose where to sit when we arrived on a Friday evening. The place had a welcoming environment, with bar seating as well as indoor and outdoor dining tables available. Service was great, the staff was friendly and professional and didn't neglect us even though we were the only ones sitting outside. It took about 15-20 minutes for our food to be ready. Got the crispy fried chicken with roasted potatoes and jalapeno coleslaw, and the king salmon plate with a delectable lobster cream sauce, mashed potatoes and grilled asparagus on the side. The asparagus was a bit tough, but the rest of the salmon dish was pretty good. The crispy fried chicken was okay, a bit on the dry side though I appreciated that the fried batter/skin wasn't oily nor too heavy. I enjoyed the roasted potatoes for sure, slightly browned on the outside, just a nice texture and taste. The fried chicken dish also came with a side of ranch which I took advantage of to add flavor to my items. I'd return to try something else, maybe for a special occasion or when we have a reason to splurge, as I'm pretty sure the best items on the menu are the priciest.

We decided to go here again. And they only had the hightop in which we sat in last time and the stools have no backs. So, they were able to move us to a booth when one became available. The food was good and the portions were large. The service was okay.

$1 Oysters should bring everyone to Toy Soldier.
    Tracey A.

Fallout from the pandemic and its aftermath wrought the demise of several Belden Place restaurants but a handful survived. Toy Soldier is one and - based on a recent weeknight visit - they're doing everything they should to remain open. By this I mean: * $1 oysters Monday - Friday from 4 - 6pm; * Some of the best Garlic Parmesan Fries ($12) ever; and * Bottles of red, white, and rose wines priced as low as $28 Need more of a reason to go? Even when I worked nearby I was never enamored of the alley that comprises Belden Place. I'm still not; I like the indoor space more. Toy Soldier's interior is simple and small, and I enjoyed what they had to offer from a seat at the bar.* There I was able to watch the US Open (2 televisions) while enjoying wine, those fries, and Roasted Brussels Sprouts (with red onion and brown butter, $12, also delicious). Had I known of the oyster happy hour deal I'd have been enjoying those as well. Toy Soldier was the perfect place to while away a couple of hours and I was surprised that workers in the area weren't flocking here for the deals. I mean: were I still working it might've been the sole reason to stop working from home. Sadly, the iconic Honey Bear mural that Toy Soldier's owners commissioned (from the artist Fnnch) were vandalized and subsequently removed, but the fact that they existed at all says good things about this place. With their stellar wine and oyster deals and delicious fries, the bar here deserves to be full when the workday is done. * Toy Soldier's upstairs is available for rental.

Where to begin? To be fair, this was during the incredibly busy JP Morgan conference week, so some grace is warranted. That said - party of 9 with a reservation. We were seated in the outdoor tent area. Not horrible, but definitely chilly. The tables were all on a decline, so water bottles and plates weren't stable and spills happened. Reservation was at 7pm. It was 745 before our first round of drinks arrived, 815 for appetizers. Dinner came just after 9 (everyone was SO hungry at this point)- for me, it was undercooked, lacking some of the ingredients for the dish, and overall cold and not good at all. Servers all had to be chased down (only reason our drinks came was someone from our party had enough and went to find someone). Ultimately, poor service, poor food, and wouldn't come back.

The photo here was taken from their little loft area, which is actually really cute and a great spot for people watching since you can see the whole bar and crowd from above. One thing I wasn't sure about was the plastic cups. Every time I've gone they've served drinks in plastic cups, but since it's so busy during First Thursdays, I'm not sure if that's their normal setup or just something they do to keep things moving during the event. My friend got the About Thyme, with gin, blackberry liquor, black pepper thyme syrup and fresh citrus. Sitting in front of one takes some bar space away from you, so I changed seats to get a few more inches of space. Emilio the bartender was mega friendly and went over some items on the menu. He also told me I was right on time for the saber champagne presentation -more on that in a sec. For drinks, I ordered the Hibiscus Spice and the Paradise cocktail. Both were super fruity and delicious! I had a great time sipping on this while chatting it up with a few folks at the bar. To nibble, I can never say no to ahi tuna tartare and this one was great! The most interesting little wafers, ahi tuna with some avocado cream and a little spicy sauce. I absolutely devoured these! So good! Now for the best part, the champagne presentation! A gentleman gave a little info session on on how this process is done and at the end he took a giant to a bottle of champagne to open it. Really Cool! What made this even better was that everyone at the bar got to snag a complimentary glass. What a treat! Super cute little hour of so sitting at the bar at the St. Regis. Absolutely a little pricey, but i'ma girl who lives to spoil herself a bit. Because YOLO. Right?

Breakfast review here…read more. Food (4.5 star) + Truffle omelette comes with tasty sliced potatoes that are crispy on the edges and soft inside. There is a nice cheesy outer layer with a fluffy and somewhat yolky interior. Truffles are a nice touch but barely noticeable in taste. + Kids breakfast for $20 is nearly an adults portion. Their hash brown is a bigger slice of that tasty potato with a cheesy top. Service (2 stars) - Today is not a good day for the staff here. Either she's new or there is a lack of training, but I saw nearly every order going to the wrong table. Ambiance (4 stars) + It's St Regis so you get the posh everything - At the bar, I'm not a fan of the light that's situated on top of where I'm sitting

On the Happy Hour menu we ordered the Carnitas tacos, deviled eggs and a light beer. The pork carnitas tacos were very tasty and a good value. So much so that we ordered an extra serving. The salads were terrific. I ordered the kale salad and added protein- it was delicious. The service was great on all fronts. I really appreciated that the tables were spread out and not on top of one another. Many San Francisco restaurants try to squeeze in as many tables together as they can but the Harlequin doesn't, which makes for a more pleasant dining experience.

We tried and loved the oysters, the buffalo chicken sandwich, the espresso martinis (which are on tap), the Tequila selection, the Old Fashioned, and the HH chicken sliders. During dinner we tried and loved the Margarita pizza, truffle Parmesan fries, the Wedge salad, and a steak and noodle dish. We did not like and would not recommend the Smash Burger. It was entirely too greasy to eat. Located directly across the street from the Marriott San Francisco Marquis. Awesome service, would definitely visit again!
