We took a ferrel kitten home 1 year ago from a free adoption event. He was 2 months old. His tail was broken in 2 places. He drew blood from my husband and hid under the desk in the viewing room. I didn't see him for 2 days after we brought him home. They called him Sky. The name was chosen from Star Wars. We renamed him Maxwell "Max". I'm honestly beyond frustrated and disappointed with my experience at the Tracy Animal Shelter this weekend. I went in with nothing but love and good intentions--to give a sweet dog a forever home. Before I even met the dog, I was informed that I'd need to cover half of the medical expenses, which they told me was $800, plus a $250 adoption fee. I figured, okay, that's steep but fair if it helps an animal in need. I was prepared to pay around $400 for the medical part, based on what they told me. But here's where things took a wild turn. After meeting the dog and falling in love (as anyone would when they meet a beautiful, deserving soul in a cage), I proceed to finalize the adoption paperwork--only to be told that the total medical bill wasn't $800, but $1,600 to $2,000, meaning my half was suddenly $800 alone, plus the $250 fee. Let's be clear: two different staff members had already said I could make payments on the medical bills, but when I got to the front counter, a woman quickly shut that down and said, "Oh no, not for this dog. He's a sought-after breed." Excuse me? He's a sought-after breed but has been sitting in the shelter for a while. Shouldn't the goal be to get him a loving home, not jack up the price tag and make it impossible for someone to adopt him? This isn't a luxury pet store--this is a shelter, and this dog needs a family, not price negotiations like you're at an auction. It honestly felt like they cared more about making money off this dog than getting him out of a kennel and into a home where he's loved. What's the point of a shelter if not to help animals get a second chance at life? This experience left a really bad taste in my mouth, and unfortunately, a dog who could've gone home that day is still sitting there waiting. Do better, Tracy Animal Shelter. These people have lost any remourse they might have had for animals. It doesnt bother them just to put an animal even someones pet to sleep. Just adopted the sweetest kitten! Super chill and super loving, however he did have worms. I wish they spayed/neutered prior to picking out your kitten. We adopted and couldn't pick him up until the following week after his neuter. If you do decide to adopt a feline from here, be prepared to bring your own box. I wasn't told this and totally showed up empty handed, thinking they would provide the box, so he was sent home in a filing box lol. I did want to see the dogs however you need to scan a code and search through photos and I didn't find that too appealing. read more

I volunteer in this shelter for the past 15 years. They moved into this new place at paradise recently. It's so much nicer and cleaner. All the staff here are very helpful and caring towards animals. Sometimes they do have off days because the job they do is very tough. They have to euthanize animals that are not adopted every now and then. It is going to turn any sane person to become frustrated. The reason I give 4 stars is because of the fact that they are not a no kill shelter. read more

I brought in two cats (mom and kitten) that my fiancé and I found outside our house, not knowing mom cat was pregnant again. When I found out, I feared for the worst but the shelter has been taking excellent care of her and her kitten. The shelter is clean (doesn't smell!) and the environment is nice and calm for the kitties. I really appreciate them taking care of these stray cats - a lot of city shelters would just euthanize them if they aren't claimed by the owner. I hope they receive plenty of donations because right now they have soooo many kittens. read more

Multiple times I've tried speaking to the two women at the front desk, but they just treat my family and I as if we're uneducated & not worthy of being treated like human beings. I received a polar response during my visit at the Tracy Animal Shelter. One of the ladies there was responsive, understanding, and compassionate to my situation. I really appreciated that. Another woman at the desk made uneducated, unprovoked and insensitive comments about my visit under her breath (although I heard every word). That person had no previous knowledge of my situation and she had NO RIGHT to assume anything. Quite frankly it made a hard day even worse. I immediately fell to tears and was glad when she left the room. I'm keeping the four star review because of a couple of reasons. The kind hearted individual that I initially dealt with did everything that she could. Also, the facility is pristine and accommodating. I do not intend to end on a bad note, but if there is room for improvement, it's with that woman. Considering that this is her job (maybe volunteer?), she should absolutely reserve her opinions. Talk smack on your own time, and for goodness' sake reserve judgement when you absolutely do not know what is happening. Tracy animal shelter has an employee who is maliciously targeting a family. This employee targets a specific dog, she holds the dog at her house for days and has no regards to grieving preschooler who lost his dog. Although this family is dealing with a dog who is a runner and looking for alternative solutions to this problem , this employee cannot identify with this. There have been multiple dogs running in the street however she only targets a specific family, a family who is dealing with a sad preschooler who cannot identify that he can only crack a door open from a running dog. No sympathy is given to this family. When we attempt to confront her and knock on her door she does not answer, however she will contact the police directly to ensure this family does not get their dog back. Although she is within her right to report a dog, she is only targeting 1 family. She knows the name of this dog and has been caught calling this dog for the purpose of just targeting a family with the purpose of ensuring this family pays fines. This is a unacceptable behavior for an employee specifically in our tracy community I will continue to educate the tracy community on the malicious actions of this employee. read more

This place needs to be SHUTDOWN we lost our beautiful pitbull, they never returned any phone calls, after some research we heard she might be at this shelter, we went down there to bring her home and were told she was "returned to owner" what owner? We're the owners.. Later on we found out she had been euthanized. This is insane you killed a member of our family, a sweetest, loving pitbull that just because of her breed they felt she deserved to die ? We are completely outraged!! read more

Just an update from a few months back. Stopped in to get another dog chipped and mentioned abou the shelter not having a scanner. A gentleman from the shelter let me know they do now have a scanner for checking animals for microchips. They also said that all animals are checked upon arrival. So good news. read more

I recently found out this was not a no-kill animal shelter...already didn't care for them much because of the less-than-wonderful way they treated me as a volunteer (especially being in about 4th grade at the time) or my mom and I when we brought DONATIONS. My first day volunteering, one of the male staff members was a little coarse towards me about moving the cats from one cage to another so the one could be cleaned. Since I was a minor at the time, my parents had to be with me. I had to move three kittens from one cage to another. I moved two of the three and I realized the other kitten wasn't moving and was perfectly still. I looked at my parents terrified because I knew it had died. The staff member repeatedly berating me to move the kitten (had to be at least three times) before my dad stepped in and said that it's an issue THEY need to take care of, not me. Said staff member stepped over, saw that the kitten was dead, and proceeded to take the kitten out of the room. What was done with the kitten? I don't know and probably don't want to know. All I know was that I was, and still am, a little heartbroken to have seen a KITTEN lying dead in its cage with two other ones that were thankfully alive. I don't think we went back after that day. My mom and I went to bring in donations a few months after I stopped volunteering there because I chose to go with the animal rescue we adopted our cat from. The woman at the office was less than friendly and almost dismissed us because it wasn't during "drop-off hours." We had a decent sized box full of towels and blankets and she was going to turn away donations which, if I remember correctly, were asked for and listed in the Tracy Press. And the ad/article did NOT show any specific time that we would need to come by. The woman sighed and basically said "I guess you can come in." The cat that was at the desk was more friendly than the woman that almost turned us away and the other person in the office. read more

This review is of the staff at the desk only. Rude, abusive, insulting, uncaring! I was advised on the phone by the local vet to take a past neighbor's abandoned, ill pet in to the shelter since it was clearly blind and in significant pain, to be euthanized. I called because I wasn't sure I even had the right to make the decision. After failing in an attempt to help this animal recover, I was told, " you've been caring for it so it's yours. We aren't here to cover your vet bills, we only euthanize certain animals" I informed her I was willing to pay for the services, but was told to go to the vet and pay them. She could see that I was clearly upset about the situation of having an animal continue to suffer she but was so unbelievably cold and uncaring. Geez, woman get another job that does not involve people or animals. Maybe work with rocks. read more

The staff are welcoming and friendly and you are allowed to go look at the animals without being made to feel that you are not welcome or doing anything wrong for wanting to see them. I wish the staff was more helpful in finding dogs homes and working with the rescues, instead of SITTING at the front desk. The 5 day stray hold is not enough time to find a dog a home when the shelter is empty. Then they euthanize them. Barley any social media is used to reach the public. Staff blames "kennel crazy" for reasons of being euthanized way to often. And they deam most or all Pit bulls rescue only, which means only can be pulled with a rescue and a foster. Please do not surrender your pet here! They will not make it out alive. You would think a shelter is there to help your animal but NO it's a death sentence to them. read more

Found a dog on my street while it was pouring outside. Decided to do the right thing and bring him to the tracy animal shelter. When I got there I asked for their assistance only to be told that they will not take the dog because it's outside of their jurisdiction. The rude woman then gave me the contact information for the San Joaquin county animal service. I called them and told asked them to pick up the dog. I went back inside to ask if maybe they could watch him since animal control was on its way and I had things to do. But they refused by telling me they were busy and didn't have time. read more

We had been looking for our dog, Dooley, since Friday, April 12th. My husband filled out a lost dog report on 4/17/19. Our Dooley was found and even though the shelter was closed they called and stayed after hours for us to come get him. I cannot tell you how grateful I am to the staff for being so accommodating. I wish I could give this place zero star rating. This shelter is disgusting. They treat the animals horribly and are easily frustrated with them. These poor animals who lost their owners and are probably already so stressed and scared are getting no proper care at all. They KILL your dog if you don't pick it up fast enough. Hello Tracy residents. My name is Kylie and I volunteer at this shelter. I have read all of the reviews and I would like to respond. A lot of people are saying that this shelter does not respond to phone calls. First of all I'd like to say that every time I am there, not a single phone call is missed. I think the reason citizens are not receiving answers to their calls is 1) they are calling before/after hours. The shelter hours are 12-5:30 pm Tuesday-Sunday. And we are closed on Mondays. Otherwise, THE PHONE IS OFF!! 2) the line might be busy. There is almost always a call in session so please, if you do not receive an answer please call again. 3) we might be busy handling a tedious animal. There are some animals especially the fighter dogs in which we need all hands on deck for usually up to 15 minutes. 4) we might be understaffed. It happens... | so that is the first topic I wanted to discuss. Second of all, the smell. Around the cat room area there seems to be a pet food smell that some (not most) people can't handle. That's literally it. Pet food. The cats are fed wet food everyday which leaves a meaty smell that some people don't like. Trust me it's not that bad. Get over it. Besides when we come in in the morning before hours to clean up, it smells like poop all throughout the facility. But we clean for 2-3 hours straight to make sure you don't have to go through that :). Ok so that's all I'll discuss for now :) remember "opt to adopt" read more

On my first visit I encountered a very rude staff member - whom used very poor judgment, evaluation, and worse rhetoric to explain the rules for meeting with the animals. I applaud the way the shelter cares about the safety of its animals and those that come to meet them. I concur 100% with the rules they have in place there to ensure that safety. I would recommend though that those rules be posted clearly and pointed out before allowing anyone to continue beyond the lobby. There is no excusable reason to be condescending or to armchair-quarterback the parenting of anyone's kids the way this staff-member did. Being informative and enforcing the rules is one thing - scaring children to make a point is just messed up. We recently had a very disappointing experience at this shelter. My husband and I went in looking for a companion dog for our 7yr. old Jack Russell mix. We fell in love with a little terrier and were told that he would be available on Sunday. We showed up before the doors opened with our dog, braving the yucky weather. We were the first ones in and asked about the dog. We were told that the dog was given to a rescue group that morning. My husband asked why we were told that the dog would be available if it actually wasn't. All the woman said was that "she was directed to give the dog to the rescue." We had some other dogs in mind as well so we went back with our dog to see if any of those would be our forever friend. Unfortunately they were still unavailable or already adopted (yay for the puppies!) I feel as though a simple note on the cage stating that the dog we were interested in was going to a rescue would have saved some disappointment and frustration. Oh, and we were not the only ones there asking about that dog. A young lady was almost in tears after I asked about the dog and said that she had been there almost every day visiting, waiting until Sunday to adopt him. The 3 stars are for the lovely facility and having dealt with them in the past to pay animal licenses. Adopt local first. I had a litter of pups dumped at my house so i took them to the shelter. The man working said he couldn't take them because i live outside the city limits, which was understandable. What i didn't appreciate was the tone of voice that he used. He was very rude and talked down to me, as if he was trying to show that he was superior to me. When i went to pull my car around to put the box back in my car, he came back out, and in a very rude tone of voice asked what i was doing. when i replied saying i was grabbing the box he responded by saying we'll do you need help or something, again very rudely. all i can say about this $6 million dollar shelter is it is a torture chamber, i went up there at almost 1:00pm to see dogs no dogs , they were washing piles of dirty dog blankets,poor little dogs what they had did not look happy, i saw a little ball of fur i saw a girl standing there asked her if i could hold the puppy she said, sure opened the door gave me the puppy the puppy licking me wanting love i said to my self i want this baby then some women came up to me yelled give me that dog you are not suspose to hold it, i asked why she said something about shots (which i understand) she threw the puppy back on cement cage and puppy fell over,oh she was a horrible rude person, and when you call there those little girls sound so miserable not professional, answer the phone with a smile in your voice. yep your kill shelter i is a house of horrors, shame on you all the people who run this dump. read more
