For the most part, going to most any restaurant was a waste of time and money. A better choice was to let them shop and choose at Safeway and then bring it all back to the Hotel. Our choices weren't all that nutritious over all, but it did reduce the drama and later cries of "I'm Starving"! My most pleasant surprise here was that my old California land line number was still linked to the Safeway Loyalty program. Past that, the combination of an unfamiliar store, and so many choices made this Safeway trip a fairly lengthy one. And later back at the Hotel, all was well.

On multiple occasions I have been told by a male cashier that this or that in the store - AND THIS…read moreIS AFTER I WAIT IN LINE AND BRING IT TO THE CASHIER - is not on sale anymore because "it expired." Expired? He's not talking about food expiring. He's saying THE SALE PRICE expired. (And very rude about it). When did it expire? Oh! After midnight. Safeway, if you keep doing this, I will pass out fliers at the store to have people complain to government agencies. When you have a tag indicating the price, THAT IS THE PRICE! If you know you have expired sale prices, you take them down. You don't have someone wait in line, go up to pay for it, then tell them to pay a huge price, and in addition be terribly rude about it. What Safeway is doing is BLAMING THE CUSTOMERS for the staff and management's incompetence. It is ILLEGAL and against the law to show a sale price and then totally change and increase the price at the register. Your staff needs to know that treating customers this way is: 1) ILLEGAL (we can make some calls you'll get fined) 2) Extremely unprofessional and rude. This is the only store I've seen do this kind of conduct that is totally against the law.

Rather than understand that I wanted to keep the attractiveness in tact, she decided to take exception to my request. Then another employee walking past made some nasty comments about we don't even have those kind of containers. So I pointed them out in a nearby display of baking goods. Then after a lot of sneering and snideness a man came up from behind the counter to gruffly inform me that they are out of those containers and I will have to take they have. The girl knew, because I told her, that I wanted the cupcakes to remain attractive. So as she boxed them up I watched and she made a point of damaging a few. I should have told her shove them! What the hell is not understandable about wanting your carefully decorated baked goods to not get smear in the box?! Why was that so hard to understand? I have a photo of the cupcakes-- the only undamaged one in front. I'm reluctant to make any more purchases because they made it an unpleasant experience for no good reason

Lots of choices for people that are vegetarian and vegan as well. I love shopping the aisles for gourmet ingredients that you don't see anywhere else from all over the world, it definitely inspires you to cook something different and expand your culinary skills too! This place is so odd; nestled on the border of Monterey and Pacific Grove - not exactly a high crime area, they have several security guards in the parking lot and within the entry and exit doors of the store. All of the employees look like they have one form of PTSD or another, and they're primed to think the worst in their customers by default. I'd highly recommend Lucky's, Safeway, or Trader Joe's - all of which are a 3-4 minute drive up the hill - over this stuck up backwards place.

Sandwiches are $11.99 each and made to your specifications with wide variety of condiments (veggies, sauces and so forth.). If you add extra meat, avocado, cheese and so on, price increases. Parking lot is available for customers and 2 hour street parking (if you can find it).

If there is a hell, it probably looks a lot like the Trader Joe's in downtown Monterey. Nestled in a mini mall, flanked by a large homeless encampment and one of the busier Alcoholics Anonymous meeting halls in the county, and directly across from a tavern, this particular Trader Joe's has always been a hotbed of communicable disease. The large numbers of panhandlers, mentally ill and public drunkards surrounding the property don't help matters much either. While this has always been one of the worst, if not the worst, Trader Joe's locations in the region, matters have become far worse in recent weeks with the coronavirus hysteria. Store employees have absolutely lost their minds and are delerious with fear. One gal, Carol, manning the front door in recent days, is a particular example. She began shouting at me to STOP STOP!!!!! so she could change from one pair of gloves to another. She actually ran two feet from one side of the door to grab new gloves then sprayed her brand new gloves with some unknown magical substance. She offered some random sanitary materials which I refused with a wave of the hand. She went ballistic and threw a tantrum on the spot: "Uuuuuuuuh!" The store was relatively well stocked and clearly had far too many customers to even entertain the possibility of "social distancing." The aisles were packed. The employees, hostile, ever vigilant, even paranoid and enraged outside of the door, were chill and could care less about "social distancing" inside of the store. Cashiers and baggers stood shoulder to shoulder chatting amiably. The management stood shoulder to shoulder in their island nook, safe from the shopping hordes. And we were reminded of the filth and cattle we were when checking out to pay. A petite blonde white woman in her 20's berated a tiny elderly woman for moving forward without the "permission" of her overlord. The elderly woman literally crawled back to her original spot, both terrified and humiliated. This millenial tyrant then began yelling out "we're all learning!" in a voice loud enough for the entire store to hear her. I gotta tell ya, these kids are loving their newfound power as dictatorial enforcers of CDC guidelines. Because you see, in order to protect the elderly, you must terrify and harass them and yell at them. Makes sense to me! I spoke to store manager taylor prior to this visit, and she assured me that she would speak with her staff to correct any problems. Apparently she hasn't gotten around to it because her employees are more hostile than ever! I also spoke with norcal regional manager Alexis Walsh about the incompetence and belligerence of her employees. Alexis assured me she would notify taylor she was doing a wonderful job! All is gumdrops, rainbows and lollipops in their world. edit: manager alexis walsh just called me personally to tell me what an amazing job she's doing and that any and all complaints by store customers are invalid. Welcome to snowflake culture, where you have to tell people how wonderful and special and amazing they are all the time, or you are a big bad werewolf. You cannot make any of this up. Madness reigns. The first challenge your soul must endure is the parking lot. You wait with your vehicle half blocking traffic, creating a perfect circular vortex of anger that encompasses the street and the entrance to the store. Once you attain access to the lot, you discover that this is a false achievement; other motorists stop and start with no apparent thought or plan--- turns once begun are quickly abandoned, the drivers seemingly immune to geometry. At last a space opens up, but the price is having to enter the store. Inside, human beings scramble like beetles whose rock has been upended. Though the aisles are wide it is impossible to avoid physical contact with your fellow shoppers. It is a grotesque parody of the bazaar at Marrakech, as if dumb animals had been granted only the amount of sentience required to mock humanity. The aisles are not labeled. You must search for every item. The constant walking up and down causes a numbness that borders on profound despair. Your conscious mind registers merely annoyance, impatience. But on a cellular level, your body cries out in weariness. The fatigue you feel is a warning: millions of years of evolution trying to save you from becoming mired in the tar, from sinking into the warm blackness and ultimately being reclaimed by the earth itself. Be sure to get the dark chocolate peanut butter cups, they are right by the register. read more

The food is the same great food at any TJ's Woot! However, the atmosphere is strange at this TJ's. I've been here twice and encountered some of the rudest drivers ever. One guy in an enormous truck flipped off a driver who was silly enough to continue driving straight when having the right of way when this truck driver wanted to make a right turn out of the parking lot. Mr. Truck Driver started honking, flipping the other driver the bird, and even began yelling out of his window. The drivers in this lot will cut you off and take a spot from you without a moment's hesitation. I couldn't get the staff to talk to me here for more than a second. They wouldn't even look at me. They just keep walking and will barely answer my question. This is bad form at any grocery store. This store also changed the layout and location of it's food in between my visits, so it became a hassle to find what I was looking for, since they had rearranged everything. I think what's happening is that as TJ's expands, they are really diluting the quality of the staff and customer service. Anyway, I'm glad you locals have a TJ's, but the experience here is really not something worth looking forward to. read more

This is a subpar trader joe's. First of all, the parking lot. Drivers in monterey county are very rude, and inconsiderate, and the tight quarters here only highlights the sociopathic stupidity of the residents here. Second, the homeless, the drug addict youth, and the shady characters who occupy the parking lot and the benches nearby. Then there's the AA meetings you are forced to deal with as well. Don't they realize that smoking while taking breaks from an AA meeting defeats the purpose of attending an AA meeting? Third, the employees. They are definitely less friendly than TJ employees in general. They are also less experienced. Trader Joe's prices have also increased very sharply in the last 2-3 years. Two stars for being a noticeable improvement over the old safeway. It really is too bad that the degenerate elements all congregate around this TJ's. read more

Parking is horrendous!!!!! The staff is even WORSE! they are rude have no idea where anything is and unprofessional. During lunch 2 lines open and 1 is the fast line with less items. everyone was everywhere and full carts going into the express lanes because they were getting so frustrated and didnt care. Instead of correcting them or asking them to get in the other line the people just took them making people like me with 2 things following the rules have to wait. I ended up putting it down and leaving. I will never go there again they have totally gone down hill in the past year. read more

I'm disappointed by this trader joe's. The parking situation is one of the worst I've seen at any retail establishment. The customers are always in a hurry, and often rude. Having a half dozen businesses share a single lot is not a recipe for success. The staff here is very disappointing. Usually, trader joe's staff are friendly and professional, and for whatever reason, I've encountered more than one rude, unprofessional staff member, even among management. They have a great location, but they've made some bad decisions concerning some of the staff they've hired. read more

I've been to Trader Joe's in several cities. The location in Monterey is subpar. The food is the same as you would find in any Trader Joe's. But the staff is subpar. Although they claim that they have a no questions asked return policy, I had the distinct displeasure of being turned away for a return. This was for a bottle of juice which was clearly rancid. They told me 'no' since I didn't have a receipt. With that kind of attitude, it's a no go. Unfortunate, since I really like their food! read more

This Trader Joe's is better than the one in Pacific Grove. It can be reached easily by bus. The aisles at this Trader Joe's are wider than the aisles in Pacific Grove's store. The service is better at this location too. There was one employee at PG's TJ's whom I went to school with and had a tendency to be rude in general,and was rude with me-Trader Joe's employees can't behave that way. So,if you have a choice between Pacific Grove's TJ's and this one,stick to this one. read more

I like the people working in downtown Monterey branch . Most are friendly and helpful . The fruit and vegetables are always fresh with reasonable prices however meat and chicken are very limited and not of good quality . Every time I like to go there I feel histatin because of the parking problem . Claustrophobia. This store is just small. That's my only complaint. Mediocre products, but that's another story. The aisles are just impossible. Especially with all the yuppie moms and dads idling with their cute little ones in the aisles. It's uncomfortable to shop here. Most California grocery stores are about 15 years behind the times, but I'd say TJ's is about 35. Ick. Trader Joe's are overrated, if you ask me. Major hippie trend. read more

Wow this place's parking lot is unbelievable its like trying to drive after the fireworks show! I was trying to park at the farthest part of the parking lot and still had to fight for parking and you can't park on the street unless you can carry your groceries 100 plus yards. The parking is atrocious and the staff is rude and incompetent. If your not dressed like a free spirit or a homeless person (Ie. in a business suit) they treat you like you are and enemy of their land and that your trying to take them over. This review is for the star market recycling center! I came early on a Thursday morning. I saw the…read morebright yellow truck as soon as I pulled in to the grocery store parking lot. Not sure if they work together but it says " Salinas recycling center" and they're always parked there so I'm assuming. A young gentlemen greeted me and started to weigh my bags. To my surprise they do not ask you to remove your bottle caps which is nice. Also he was very quick and efficient. I got $20 dollars for two 35 gallon trash bags filled with plastic water bottles and a small bag of Pepsi cans. Not too bad and it took less than ten minutes. Had a little trip to the aquarium today and forgot our sweaters so we bought some at this store…read more After I had put the sweater on I noticed this bug crawling on me didn't think anything of it. My fiancé later found the same bug on him but a smaller size. Then once we checked ourselves and realized they were coming from INSIDE our sweaters!!! Not sure what kind of insect this is but we did NOT have them until we put on our sweaters !!!

After leaving the Monterey Bay Aquarium, I really needed some water. That was all I was planning to buy. Just water. For $3.25 + CRV....how?!?!? I ended up looking around at all the cute souvenirs (mugs, hoodies, t-shirts, shot glasses, etc). They are pricey, but, that's to be expected. I ended up grabbing a keychain with a sea otter...because it's cute and it's functional. Can one have too many keychains??? I think not. LOL.
