Been meaning to review this place for some time -- with a FIVE STAR rating in mind. Truth be told, it's been one of my favorite places to shop since it first opened on Woodward in
Royal Oak way back when. Flowers, wines and "different/unique" items always available
at reasonable prices. Staff knowledgeable, attentive and friendly. I once had a flat tire in
their parking lot, and a staff member actually changed my tire for me. (The one and only "minus" for this operation to date is their ATROCIOUS parking lot which, it seems, has been under construction FOREVER.
All that having been said, let me relay the reason for my three star rating instead of five stars.
Every year, right around Thanksgiving, Trader Joe's comes out with its Fearless Flyer "Holiday Guide" featuring seasonal items available but once a year. I've shopped from that guide for years, and anxiously await its arrival.
As fate would have it, I was in the store the day the guide arrived and was pleased to see -- prominently displayed in the upper left-hand corner of the back outside cover of the guide -- a five-inch article with picture touting their "Triple Ginger Brew" stating it was only available during the holiday season. Having purchased this item in prior years, I bought a few a bottle or two. Friends expressed an interest in the product, so on three (3) separate occasions I stopped-by the store (fighting that ATROCIOUS parking lot situation) for the sole purpose of
buying that "Triple Ginger Brew." Each and every time the "Holiday Guide" was prominently displayed, but nowhere could I find the product I sought!
On my FOURTH (4th) visit with the item still not available, I approached an attendant and explained my situation, asking where I might find the product. He led me to an empty shelf
and called over an individual who was stocking the shelves. That individual informed me that
the "supplier" provided the store with "minimum and infrequent" shipments of the "Triple
Ginger Beer" and that since it was a popular holiday item, I'd just have to keep checking
back in the hopes I hit the store when a shipment was delivered and would be stocked!
I was literally FLOORED.
Nonetheless I stopped-by the store TWO (2) more times, fighting that ATROCIOUS parking lot, heard customers other than myself inquiring re: the item only to be told it was out of stock at the "moment."
FURIOUS at my last visit, I demanded to see a manager and recounted my frustration at stopping-by his store time-and-time-again in search of a product PROMINENTLY displayed
in their "Holiday Guide." The manager spouted the same tale I'd heard before re: the
supplier providing infrequent and limited quantities of the "Triple Ginger Beer" -- a problem
they'd encountered for some time without resolution. He then asked me to hold-on and
checked some papers in his office, coming-out to announce that his records showed no
further deliveries of this product would be forthcoming!
Oh, really?
How, I asked, could an item so prominently displayed in their "Holiday Guide" which came-out right AFTER Thanksgiving, not be available with four-weeks remaining until the holiday?!
Should "customer service" mean anything to Trader Joe's management, they certainly need
a refresher course in product acquisition/stocking. They also need to revise their apparent policy of prominently advertising sale items that are NOT readily available . . .
If the unfortunate situation I encountered happened with their "Triple Ginger Beer" featured in their Fearless Flyer "Holiday Guide," how many other Fearless Flyer instances have there
been wherein a prominently touted item is not readily available?
Come on, Trader Joe's, you've got a REPUTATION to uphold if you want me and others
to continue to be the loyal customers we've been for years! read more
