Love this restaurant! What a hidden gem nestled in the Adirondack's. Walk in to a friendly hello and immediate seating of your choice. The service was very bad, I'm not sure if they were under staff or what but it was NOT acceptable. We were waiting for over an hour and still weren't served. When we arrived at the table there was no sliver wear at the table and we had to ASK for it. The food portions were very small and wasn't that tasty. This review is on TWO visits, each quite different in some ways. The first was when this restaurant opened under new ownership, the second just recently. My first visit was on a quiet night when we were the last diners to come in. It was peaceful and the chef had time to come out and speak to us. The food was very good and promised an elevation in dining opportunities for the town. Recently, a busy holiday weekend. The place was quite full at 6 PM (we had a reservation, and were seated at a table right in the center of the dining room.) We were impressed by the menu: unexpectedly diverse, but the 3 of us were each able to find options for our individual preferences. One of us is vegan, one with many food allergies, and one vege-phile. I had a sort of eggplant parmesan made with spinach. It was good, but I thought a little too much mozzarella on top and the pasta tossed in scant marinara sauce beneath wilted the breading on the eggplant too quickly. Overall, it was tasty, but a change in presentation would benefit. My more selective companions had the tofu salad dish and scallops dinner, and both were happy. Dinner salads were not unusual and fresh enough. The bread, however, was excellent! Fresh and crusty- I think sourdough. Both times we had pleasant and attentive service: not so easy in this time of The Labor Crisis. One thing that was VERY different between visits was the noise level: I'd give the dining room a 4.5 out of 5: choose the outdoor tables if available, or avoid prime family dining time. read more

Have been dining here for past 5 years on our annual ADK vacation. Food was good,plentiful and reasonably priced. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Was there on October 1st/2024. Not at all crowded[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]. Waitress took our (2) drink orders. Served and took food orders. Three more tables filled up of 2 people each. One table had their dinners served and eaten,was paying the check. Flagged down waitress and she said the meals were coming out. No water or bread served as yet. When the other 2 tables of two were served their meals, I was getting upset. We sat for one hour! Flagged down waitress and told her we wanted to pay our bar tab and leave. She ran into kitchen and out comes the cook?? with a overcooked chicken cutlet and pasta for 24$ She did beg us to stay. Wish I hadn't. The skinny dried out Marsala cutlet was not good. I then called to speak to the owner on Friday and never got a return call.It is a shame since we would eat there 2 x in out week vacation. read more

When there last night with friends. Was greeted promptly but took sometime to be seated even though the table was ready. Drink order seemed to take some time to get to our table but where all satisfied when they arrived. Had the lobster bisque for my appetizer was tasty! The food came to our table in a decent time. Called ahead with a party of 22 on a weekend night. Trail Break never disappoints. They staffed our party accordingly and everyone received their food quickly. The food was great and consistent. Not an unhappy person in the entire group. The prime rib was great and the appetizers were perfectly served before dinner. My husband and I have been to Trail Break 3 times in the last 2 months (twice with friends and tonightjust the two of us) and have never been disappointed! We've had the roast duck which was perfectly cooked with crispy skin and not at all fatty as duck can sometimes be. The burgers are amazing, as was the chicken Marsala, scallops, chicken Parmesan, and everything else we've ever tried. Barry, the owner, was so accommodating this evening even though he was short staffed and had almost every table filled including a table of 20! We gladly sat at the bar because we hadn't made a reservation and enjoyed our meal while chatting with him. Wonderful place and one of the few restaurants in this neck of the woods open year round. The food here was great! We got a seat out on the patio since it was a nice night and we brought our dogs with us. I didn't walk inside and I really like the vibe in there so inside looks to be a great option. I ordered a North Country Classic burger and got blue cheese on it. This was a great sized juice burger with perfectly cooked bacon and plenty of blue cheese. The bun was good and toasted which is vital to a good burger in my opinion. The fries are a wedge type of fry and those were good as well. All in all a great place! read more

What a disappointment. Although the waitress was running around it was very slow service. The calamari was run of the mill. I ordered the French dip and specified no butter on the bread. It came out with cheese. So even though I waited 50 minutes for the food I allowed them to bring another. This time with buttered bread. So after waiting forever for our meal I couldn't eat it. They did remove it and offer to make a THIRD meal but I declined. Nice place but OMG get your act together. And have your menu match what you serve. read more

I've never eaten in the restaurant, but I have gotten takeout plenty of times and sat at the bar while waiting. The owner is friendly and knowledgeable. Our favorite dish is the orange duck. The skin is incredibly crispy, and the duck is not fatty. I also tried a vegan stew with chickpeas and other vegetables. It was good, but the duck is excellent. It's got a woodsy and Adirondack vibe going on. The selection of alcohol is extensive, and the owner knows a lot about it and is happy to chat and make recommendations. The portions are large---we get two meals out of the duck every time. This is one of the higher end and pricier restaurants in Schroon. It's a treat to eat the food. read more

This restaurant is the only one in this area (that we know of) open for dinner on Monday and Tuesday evenings. My husband and I went to eat early (4:30/5:00 PM) on a Tuesday evening. Almost no one was there when we arrived but it filled up quickly. We were seated immediately and ordered glasses of wine which came promptly. The menu was varied but because we had never been there before we ordered Chicken Parmesan and Eggplant Parmesan. (There is a huge selection of drinks, especially beers and wine.) A side salad with fresh vegetables was served, as well as a couple warm slices of fresh bread. Everything was delicious. I especially liked the tiny peppers in the salad. I had never had the "little sweeties" or something like that as they were called, and the lettuce tasted and looked like it had just come from a garden. The chicken was very tender and the breading on both entrees was light. Despite the huge portions, I did order a slice of Rhubarb Pie. That also had a homemade presentation. We each had a large enough dinner that there was enough for another meal. We boxed up half our entrees and brought them home. The service was prompt and no issue with the order. The owner came over before we left to introduce himself and make sure everything was satisfactory. The bill was very reasonable, not cheap but not outrageous either. It was certainly a fair price for everything we got. If I had to point to a downside, it probably would be the "ambiance" or decor. It looked like they hadn't completed the remodeling before they opened. I'm not sure if that is truly the case. I think it's a work in progress. The owner is Barry Pitkin and he's bringing back the restaurant family tradition to Schroon Lake and environs. I was happy to travel from our home (which is to the east and south of Ticonderoga) to this wonderful restaurant that is open when other restaurants are not. The food is worth the travel and we will be going there again. read more

Have been to this place 3 times total. Place has gone down hill horribly in terms of service. Reservations and seated at 615 which was good. Though they weren't that busy. Two hours later we had to ask that our food be boxed to go when and if it finally came out. We were a table of 4 plus one child. We put child's order in after waiting 20 mins to be asked for drink order. We ordered him a grilled cheese and ended getting chicken tenders.. safe to say that was "on the house" and had to wait for the correct meal. Food once we got it home was okay. Some meals were bland and others were pretty good. Three table that came on after us received their soups before we got our soup. Also must note the posing lawsuit from sitting a table under lights that people from our table hit in the head every time they got up from their chair. So much to point out but I'm just so frustrated over the horrible service. Save you time and sanity and go elsewhere. read more

Delighted to say that the new Trail Break restaurant is a welcome addition to dining in Schroon Lake. Under the capable management of Barry Pitkin, the restaurant is spacious and has an open an inviting decor. For those who favor outdoor dining, the screened patio is lovely. The completely redesigned bar has a great selection of 20 craft beers ranging from very local to more exotic. On a recent evening, eight of us had dinner in the main dining room. Our server was attentive and helpful, letting us know in advance about a relative shortage in one of the menu items. Drinks, bread and water arrived within 10 minutes of our being seated. We found the appetizers we tried, including the fried calamari, perfectly fine, and really liked the stuffed mushrooms. Our salads were all crispy and flavorful, and the dressings were helpfully served on the side. Our entrees arrived within 15 minutes of ordering (this is rare in Schroon Lake). We especially liked the prime rib, the fettuccini in clam sauce, and the Greek salad with shrimp. All were very substantial portions, and all cooked correctly (prime rib was rare, fettuccini was al dente and salad had loads of shrimp and big chunks of feta). For desserts we enjoyed the flourless chocolate torte, which was very rich, as well as the old favorite brownie topped with ice cream. It even came with the requested chocolate sauce on top. All in all a very good meal delivered at an excellent price. We will absolutely be back. read more

The fact that new owners have been doing an excellent job of sprucing up the old Drake's Restaurant shows in both the building and the food. Four of us ate there recently and found the food and service to be impeccable. They are still in the process of settling in (as of 7/8/19), but any irregularities (such as a shortage of drinking straws) are minor and sure to be corrected quickly. Formerly Drake's Restaurant and Motel, this property has been saved from the ashes by the new owners. They are rehabbing and renovating the Motel, and have already put a ton into the rebirth of the restaurant. Excellent menu, excellent food. Vegetarian and vegan options (including 'Beyond Meat') along side the traditional favorites. Haven't had calamari like theirs since I was in Greece. Do yourselves a favor and support this business while scoring an outstanding meal. Great to see this place back on the map. read more

This was my first time at Trail Break! Delicious food, we enjoyed pasta Bolognese, chicken marsala, pork chop, and NY strip steak. The salad was chilled, the dressing sufficient the rolls piping hot out of the oven, the calamari appetizer (for the two who love calamari) was great! The steak was cooked just right for medium and the pork chop had to be at least 2" thick, moist and tender and cooked all the way through. The mushroom sauce on the chicken was plentiful. Each meat came with twice baked potato. The Bolognese was creamy, but not too much sauce. Our waitress, Pauline, was extremely attentive to us. We chose to eat early, around 5:15 pm and for about an hour we were the only ones in the restaurant. We went on a Tuesday night. This restaurant is in the "old" Drake's and is definitely worth trying! The bartender was courteous and our water boy kept our water glasses always full. read more

I stopped to dine here after hiking. I ordered a burger with sweet potato fries and coffee. The waitress was awesome! She was also the baker and related to the owner. The burger was cooked exactly as ordered, and the fries were yummy. The coffee was frothy and perfect, as it was made fresh with an espresso maker. The service was beyond excellent. Was definitely worth waiting for this place to open!!!! The food is amazing and the selection of beer just blew my mind. They have many other alcohol choices if you're not into beers such as wine,bourbon,tequila,vodka ... Full bar for great combination of your desire! The Portobello Mushroom app was absolutely delicious! The fried Calamari was.... well don't get me started on that! Simply fantastic!
