Stopped in a while back... still disappointed in myself for not making it there at least a second time during my stay in VT. Key points: (1) Make a reservation, this place can get busy. For good reason. (2) Get the street corn. For the love of whatever you believe in, get the street corn. (3) Portions were generous to say the least. (4) Atmosphere is fantastic, colorful, lively, awesome decorations. I got the left coast burrito, and it was very very good. This place has a great vibe. I started with a margarita made by the bartender, Amy. It was perfect. Then I tried an appetizer sized guacamole. It was disappointing. They use grilled serrano peppers in their guac and it doesn't work for me. In general, guac shouldn't contain any cooked ingredients. Then I moved onto two tacos: the shaved steak and the arugula. The shaved steak was fairly tasteless and the texture was a turn off. On the other hand, the arugula taco was bursting with flavors and was truly wonderful. Finally, wanting to end on a high note, I ordered queso, which is not on the menu. The queso was okay, but I really wanted some chopped peppers and onions in there. On my next trip I'll try a few more tacos and a few beers. The beer selection is awesome. Why not have barbacoa tacos instead of shaved steak? Barbacoa comes from a very flavorful cut of meat and it's cheap. Also, stick with a basic guacamole and then add other versions. I'm only giving 3 stars for now, but I hope to add more on future visits. read more

This is a restaurant that doesn't know what it wants to be when it grows up. The name suggests tacos and beer, but this is confusion fusion. I appreciate their beer selection, but no margaritas? The waitress was very good. The online menu was difficult to navigate (and yes we are tech savvy). The popcorn was stale. The pulled pork was dry and the lime in the sauce totally overwhelmed the whole dish. The Mahi Mahi taco was fishy and the shrimp were over cooked. Overall the food was not fresh. My wife and I have gone to Trail Break now 6 or so times and whenever we are looking to eat out this has become the new staple...and it's a 35 minute drive for us. So far everything we have had has been fantastic. The Cajun popcorn as the appetizer is delicious to me (I know some people think it's a little heavy handed on the spice, but maybe you just can't handle the heat). Everything from the breakfast burrito to all the tacos I've had so far (the black bean is my favorite) to the Choco taco have been delicious. There's a lot of complaining about the menu being confusing, but quite frankly I think that's an issue with the people complaining about it and not the restaurant. It's not that hard folks. Beer selection is top notch and River Roost right down the road is prominently featured on the taps. Some of the best and most underrated beer coming out of Vermont right now in my opinion. Atmosphere is great (though my wife complained a bit about the TVs when I get carried away watching dudes on mountain bikes with a death wish careening down a cliff face). Comfortable and varied seating...plus the back room is cool and comfy with couches and table top shuffle board. One of our favorite new spots and gives hope that WRJ is on the up and up for dining out. read more

I will admit that when my friend suggested that we go to "this place that has good tacos," I assumed that it was going to be a typical or traditional Mexican restaurant that served authentic tacos, burritos, etc. Upon entering (and reading the menu), I was pleasantly surprised at the non-traditional, surf-ski vibe, modern, tapas-style taco shop. Being a non-traditional, Mexican inspired place, the menu was a little confusing at first, but the waiter quickly and happily gave recommendations and explained the menu. He and the manager (I think it was the manager) were attentive and ensured we were satisfied during our visit. The tacos weren't authentic. Whatever. They were pretty good. Flavorful and loaded. I had the 'grilled' chicken and 'roasted' pork tacos - both were good, but I liked the chicken one better. Next time I'll try the fish tacos. The best part of the meal had to have been the street corn. Top notch! Like seriously, I could drink beer and eat the street corn all day. OK... I'm going to need a few tacos as well. Maybe some chips and salsa, too. TB has a full selection of craft beers. With so many interesting and enticing beer options, I was hoping for a sampler option (maybe there was one, but I did not notice it on the menu) to try a few at once. Great first time experience. We ate outside on their fun patio. Great colours, fun lighting but we found the music a bit too loud to have a conversation. The service was quick and attentive but not hovering, nice!. The beer choices were plentiful with many off-beat options. The food was fresh and colourful. My burrito (which I ordered without a side) could have used at least a spring of cilantro, it looked pretty naked. It tasted really good, it was rather large, I took half home. Hot sauces (Tapitio and Chalula) you need to ask for instead of part of the table condiments, same with salt and pepper. In my option, these are things you shouldn't have to ask for. Atmosphere, service, food and beers were all wonderful! We were greeted by "Topher" (short for Christopher) the owner when we walked in. He gave is some insight into the decor. Think skiing and surfing. Hannah was our server and she was incredible! She knew the menu well and understood how things were spiced. She also was great with the beer menu as there are over 20 beers on tap with more highly sought after specialty beers from breweries like "The Alchemist" a s an example.. My wife and I each had selections from the taco menu with a side. All the tacos we're good but the two that really stood out to us were the Blackened Mahi Mahi and the Sushi grade Ahi Tuna. They were incredible!!! My wife choose a sweet potato and chick pea side and I had the quacamole and chips. She enjoyed hers and we both enjoyed the quacamole. Both, portions and prices were very fair. We both recommend this restaurant and we will DEFINITELY be returning. read more

My husband an I took our 2 sons and their fiancées to Trail Break the other night, after having eaten there ourselves the week before. Once again, an absolutely fantastic experience! The incredible flavors of the menu and the perfectly curated beer selection, are only enhanced by the wonderful atmosphere and the energetic waitstaff. It doesn't seem to matter what we order, all of the food is exceptional. Topher, the owner, is visible on the floor, and stopped by a couple of times to make sure all was well at our table, even though the place was packed. I had the pleasure of eating at TRAIL BREAK over Memorial Weekend with some friends for a birthday celebration. My party was lucky enough to sit at the couches (toward the back corner of the restaurant). The coaches made me feel like I was hanging out in a basement with all my close friends...the ski shots were awesome and I highly recommend. The staff was extremely friendly and easygoing. The location is perfect, as the restaurant is right across the street from River Roost Brewing. Only thing I would change is how spicy the food is....BRING ON ALL THE SPICES!! I WANT THEM ALL!!! Had dinner on a Saturday night. This place is popular and it was easy to understand why. Good location in an ever improving downtown White River Jct. The space was well lit and brightly colored without over doing it. Got there at about 5:30pm and it was busy but we were immediately greeted when we came in and sat at a table within 5 minutes. The crowd was younger families and everyone seemed to be enjoying the place. Our waiter was polite and offered to explain the menu and answer any questions. The menu was pretty clear and the beer list was a good mix of local breweries, if you go in and order a Bud you are really shortchanging yourself. Chips and queso for an appetizer which came out quickly. We waited a little bit for the entrees but as full as the place was it didn't seem bad. There was a steady flow of people coming in as we were there and it got closer to 6:00pm. The entrees came out hot and were really good. I had the B.A.D. burrito and the portion size was good. We ordered take out from here before and loved it, so we decided to stop by to visit. Let me just say, the tap list is quite beautiful! Most of my ratings (and willingness to visit again) is frequently based upon the tap list. A lot of local beers, as well as domestic micro brews throughout the country; some rare. I was undecided about two drinks and they offered me a sampler of both; not many places do that. We ordered the half nachos with chorizo chilli for an appetizer and they were quite delightful. The only problem we had with this dish was that it wasn't delicate on our stomachs because of the oil, chorizo, and cheese. However, it was incredibly tasty and the nachos were crispy and obviously homemade. We both got burritos (which we had before and loved): my partner got the (not so) standard and I got the left coast. The burritos are super large (we didn't finish them) and incredibly tasty. The carne asada is well seasoned and quality meat. The only disappointment of the meal were the FLIPS, which we thought would be more churro-like. We weren't that impressed and found that they were too plain, and the sauce was not that great. Not sure if it was the amount of spice or the type of chocolate, but it was just not...right. My husband and I stopped here on our way to the Woodstock VT area from Boston. After a great meal, we made it a point to also stop en route back home. Between us are corn and dairy sensitivities and they had great vegetarian options. The service was also impeccable even though it was busy both times.
