It doesn't look like much from the street, but from the second we walked in for an early lunch and saw it was PACKED, we knew it was going to be great. I got the fish tacos (which are on far too few menus in Texas!), and they were awesome. Fish was flaky and perfectly crisp. So perfect, in fact that my 1-year-old ate all the fish from two of my tacos (luckily, the portions are large). And their two hot sauces were great. Even the milder one packed a lot of heat. The staff was also great. You typically pick up your order from the counter when they call your number, but they saw me juggling the baby and brought it out to us. I was surprised to see the guys next to us all having burgers at a taco place, but they said Tranky's has the best burgers in town. Overally pretty solid, there Al pastor taco and chicken gordita are amazing, chichirone taco was okay and a little soggy but I did get it to go, good red and green sauce and salsa is okay more on the smoky end and less of a classic tomato flavor read more

Went back today so I could check to see if my first time impression was a fluke, and I'm pleased to say no, it wasn't. This is a small mom & pop with some outdoor seating. Now for the food - The tacos are sooo good! I got the platter today just before they closed, I got the steak tacos and received customer service with a smile. Last time, I got one of each, and they were all good, all perfectly seasoned. The taco salad had so much in it, the only thing was the shell was not crunchy enough. The accompanying beans were to die for and I don't usually get beans but i ate them all. The chef came out to say Hello. The place was busy during lunch but with quick service. Not only does Tranky's have some of the best tacos in DFW, I believe they have one of the top ten dishes in the metroplex. I obviously have not tried every taco in DFW, but I have tried a lot being a Dallas native for 40 years. The Barbacoa taco is in my opinion THE best taco in DFW and one that everyone passing through the area HAS to try. The barbacoa (brisket) melts in your mouth and has such a depth a flavor that must be a result of a very long, slow cooking process passed down from generations. The grilled onions that come with the tacos have an equally rich, deep flavor that tastes of home cooking that has been perfected over generations. When you taste them, you will know what they I'm talking about. The freshness of the ingredients is also a hallmark of this establishment. Lastly, what truly elevates this place from others and makes it a top ten DFW spot, is the amazing staff and owner. The owner immediately greeted me upon entry and explained in detail the options and different sauces available. You could tell he was passionate about his food and it really resonates in the final product. I didn't expect to wind up at Tranky's. At first my son and I saw a misleading gas station sign advertising gas for $1.89/gallon and then we saw some really cool but also misleading signage advertising a taco place called Rickey's Rockets. But then we went inside what was essentially a giant QT and saw two sleepy employees behind a taco counter who didn't bother to say hello or even look up from their phones. So we left. Note: THIS WAS NOT TRANKY'S!! So I grabbed the phone and pulled up Yelp and saw a nearby Taco place that had achieved the GOLD STANDARD: 100+ reviews with a 4.5* average or better. That place WAS TRANKY'S! We couldn't figure out what to order because they offered like 7-8 different flavors of tacos: ground beef, chicken, barbacoa, carnitas, spicy pork, fish, and steak. They also offer give you the option of streetstyle (cilantro, onions) or gringo (cheese, lettuce). Streetstyle tacos are $2.19 and gringos are an extra 50 cents or so. We went with two streetstyles and six gringos -- one of each flavor. Everything was awesome. They pack about 2-3x the meat of a Taco Bell or Bueno or Loco so it's a great value and all of the meats were juicy and tasty AF! For 8 tacos and a drink, it cost about $20 and we were totally filled up. Very reasonable! Service was also very friendly from the patient gal at the counter who took the time to explain everything to me, to the guy at the table next to us who turned out to be the son of the owner, to the owner himself whom I met on the way out the door as they were shutting down. We don't make it to Garland truancy court very often but when we do, well make sure we always stop at Tranky's to celebrate another day of skipping school! read more

Had the Tres Taco Platter (Pollo-Barbacoa-Picadillo) Did not disappoint. Full street taco authenticity served with grilled onions and plentiful cilantro on double corn tortillas. Full flavor. An explosion in your mouth. The pollo was well seasoned and on the high end side of great. The Barbacoa was perfectly seasoned and left me wanting mas. I can still taste it. Mmmmm Surprisingly, the star of the experience was the Picadillo which was inspired from a family recipe. Loved the flavor palette. Would love more this again. Some of the best street tacos around, if not the best. I got the tres taco Platter with charro beans, Al Pastor, carnitas, and Barbacoa. They were extremely knowledgeable about their food and what's in it. Everything is cooked in house. Came out hot and fresh and fast and was delicious. It's worth noting this is a counter serve (which I knew), however they still not only brought the food out to our table, they checked on us twice to make sure everything was good. They have 3 sauces for the tacos, the traditional roja and verde, and a spicy habanero sauce. This sauce had a decent bite, but was not so overpowering that you couldn't enjoy the wonderful flavor. I will definitely return here. Edit: The sauces are far more advanced than simple roja and verde, but I couldn't remember exactly what was in them. Went here to meet my girlfriend and her brother at lunch by her work. She just started and does not know many places around, this place stood out due to the raving reviews and they were spot on! Check this place out! The place is small, but packs tons of delicious food. She ordered two chicken street taco's, her brother ordered the tres tacos platter and I ordered the chicken quesadilla with a side of chips and guacamole. First off, the guacamole is ridiculously good!! The chicken quesadilla was da bomb diggity as well, with lots of food for its price. Not as good as I thought, but with some improvement, this could be a knockout meal. I'll definitely be the odd man out on this one, but I stand by what I taste. The interior was simple yet didn't feel like a dive. It felt like I was at someone's house that wasn't completely furnished. The owner/chef is very passionate and knowledgeable about his food. He was able to tell me every ingredient within the hot sauces and tacos alone. I ordered four different meats for my tacos: chicharron, barbacoa, fajita de res, and pastor. The fajita and pastor were the better of the two. I wish their taste was stronger, but it still stood out among everything else. For $1.80, they load up that taco. I like the fact that they give you regular onions and grilled onions. They don't skimp out on onions and cilantro either. The Barbacoa was a little watery for my taste. This would have been forgivable if the flavor was stronger. It was quite moist, but dilutes the flavor of the beef. The chicharron was super watery. It was still enjoyable, but the flavor was washed out by the texture of basically eating a water balloon. The fajita was the best one. Texture wise, it almost felt like lengua. Don't know how they prepare it, but its quite spongy. I would have liked some char or browning of the edges, but it still gets the job done. Same comments go to the pastor. I felt like the marinade could have been stronger for the pastor. The corn tortillas themselves are the crown jewel of this place. The craft and execution behind it blows me away. You can taste every aspect of the corn, from the oil, down to the kernel. There is more love poured into making those tortillas than I normally see around these parts. They have the right amount of grease and density for a Pleasant chew. My biggest complaint though is how the tortillas hold most of the work for this meal. The meat lacks in flavor half the time, but the tortillas are always top notch. It almost feels like an amazing quarterback playing with a subpar offense. The rice is just filler and your better off not ordering them. The beans have a well-rounded pork flavor, considering the hunks of bacon, ham, and wiener bits the chef uses. Out of all the taco joints in this particular neighborhood, this one stands out with its homemade tortillas and clean atmosphere. I hope some improvements are made, but after trying twice within a year's period, the process is more than likely not going to change. read more
