The first time we went to La Sombra Cantina we thought we were going back to Pineda's. We were surprised at the change and hoped it was at least as good as Pineda's. We were very pleasantly surprised. It's even better in my opinion. The people are very warm and friendly. The food is really delicious. I love that they bring not only good salsa with their fresh hot chips, but also a tomatillo sauce and a black bean dip. We've now eaten there several times. The taco meat has a nicely charred flavor. The tamales were very good. (I'm picky about my tamales. I've tried their ranchero sauce, chili con carne, and sour cream sauce. None of them disappoint. Their rice isn't dry like it is at many other Tex-Mex places. And their $5.00 all day frozen margaritas are worth it. We usually go for the lunch specials that run until 4:00. They don't have mole on the menu, yet. I'm looking forward to their future specials. In this day and age where it's hard to keep a restaurant open, I really hope this one survives. It's not fancy, but the food and service make it worth it. And I'm a picky person when it comes to spending money on food I don't make myself. read more

My oh my ! I love this place, what gem ! The food is super delicious. I knew we were in for a treat with the salsa and the 3 dips. A red salsa which was mild and has some nice acidity from the tomato. Then there was a creamy green salsa that had a nice spice. Then finally my personal favorite a great black bean dip. These paired well with the free chips. My partner ordered the queso birria, great flavor and a great consume. Then I had the poblano enchiladas which was the best dish of night! The poblano sauce was creamy cheesy and delicious. There was a nice spiced shredded chicken super tasty. Overall a fantastic restaurant with great service too ! read more

First off, not a fan of the decor, it's in a strip center and the tables need to be arranged to be more cozy. We have been to some nicer hole-in-the-wall restaurants, that we liked better, and felt more at home. The conference room chairs are uncomfortable, along with the flat decor with loud colors. For the food, all we can say is Meh...and the drinks are weak. There are so many better mexican restaurants to dine with, in this City. read more

I really tried to like this place since a lot of people go here, but when I walked in, I could kinda tell what demographic the food was catered to. Still, I was craving Tex-Mex. Drinks: 10/10 - strong and worth it. Got buzzed off two. Fajitas: 2/10 - small, overpriced ($20+ for six strips of beef). Chips & Salsa: 6/10 - salsa too salty, chips not salty enough. I haven't reviewed a place on the spot in a while. This place...what a really nice visit. Miguel took great care of us. He was on TOP of it. No drinks came close to running dry. He offered great menu tips. He even spotted a soiled napkin in someone's lap and showed up with a clean one. He even noticed my ice tea didn't have enough ice and asked if I needed more ice. Super attentive without being intrusive, and super nice - very personable. Food was solid - everyone agreed. My chili relleno was unconventional but Miguel gave me that heads up - and I went with it. Definitely enjoyed it. It was so big and so filling that I took my rice n beans home. Chips were fresh and not greasy. Salsa was great - had some zing for sure. Rice n beans were very good. The former Pineda's has a new name and interior! I love it and the food and service is just as good and better. There is a new bar when you enter and the margaritas are big and delicious. DELICIOUS!!!! The minute we open it's doors, we could smell the wonderful aroma of Mexican food. This quaint restaurant located in a strip center off N Plano Rd. is a great find. We were immediately greeted by Antonio who showed us to our table. We were served chips, salsa and a black bean dip. Delicious. We placed our order and they were served in a timely manner. If I lived in the area, I think this would be my regular spot for Tex-Mex! The service was kind and attentive, with our waitress being on top of water and chip/salsa refills. They offer both a black bean salsa along with a tomato salsa, which I thought was unique. The chips are on the saltier side, but I thought that they paired well with the black bean salsa which is less salty. I ordered the queso Serrano enchiladas, which were accompanied by rice and beans. This was delicious and very affordable ($13 for dinner) for the amount of food I received. My friend ordered a spicy margarita and was pleasantly surprised by how generous the size was and the strength of the drink. They do not skimp out here! Stopped in here on a busy weekday and we had the best experience. The hostess who I later discovered was the manager, Antonio was very welcoming. The staff is very friendly, great at anticipating what I wanted. The service was quick, great spot if you are needing to be in and out. The food was AMAZING, this place is a hidden gem. Decided to try this local spot since Yelp gave it good reviews. As we sat down a delicious hot basket of chips came to the table with a very flavorful salsa and bowl of creamy black beans for dipping. We started with a cup of queso so creamy with just enough heat. It was before 4pm so we ordered the Timmy's off lunch menu. We asked to change the chicken enchilada with a cheese one it also comes with a beef enchilada, crispy beef taco and beans and rice. We picked up takeout and even though the name has changed the food is still as good as it was when it was called Pinedas. I had el ocho which is the three tostadas. Wasn't sure where to eat last night in Dallas so picked this place on Yelp and it did not disappoint. It's a small place located in a strip center but don't let it fool you, the food and service were amazing! This was not the typical TexMex, thank goodness but was good Mexican food. The chips and salsa were very good, and they served a black bean dip as well with the chips that was a pleasant surprise. For the main meal my wife had enchiladas and a taco, I went with a ground beef chimichanga and our granddaughter did chicken quesadillas. The food was all prepared fresh, the chicken and hamburger just like you would make at home. All of the plates were more food than you could eat and the prices were very reasonable The service was spot on and the owner came and made sure everything was good. This is a place we would definitely go back to while in the Plano area. If you have not been there take the time and go. Food was great! Unfortunately, service needs some help. To start off, yes it was busy and slow. But when it came time to pay, waiter took my card and DROPPED IT on the floor. If it wasnt for another honest customer who found it and asked around about it being someone's card, someone could have claimed it as theirs. Luckily I noticed it was my card. Took the waiter awhile to come back and even ask if I had my card. When we said ya cause you dropped it. NO APOLOGIES. HE WALKED OFF AND CHARGED MY CARD. HE CAME BACK STILL NO APOLOGY. He had the nerve to say at least you got your card. Excuse me. Literally he could have apologized and it wouldnt have been that big of deal. Mistakes happen. But own up to it. Awful customer service. No manager so he got him on the phone and he says he will refund , but we will see. Bad. Cause the food was good. Highly recommend this little family-owned spot! To start, the black bean dip that comes with the chips and salsa is delicious. We also ordered the guacamole and it was very fresh. For our meals we ordered the Stiney's Brisket Tacos that came with three tacos, rice, avocado salad, and charro beans. Loved the charro beans. The brisket was very tasty and tender. We also ordered the Chile Relleno with cheese and beef fajita. Again, the meat was tender and flavorful and the ranchero sauce had a nice kick to it. They have brunch on the weekends so I enjoyed a mimosa but i definitely need to go back to try their margaritas. We had excellent service, very friendly and attentive. Well, this lunch was great! Our waiter (Nico) was very helpful and friendly. The atmosphere was cozy and they had several tv's that could distract if you wanted them to. My wife had a small nacos I had a build your own combo. So, I always order enchiladas when we go to a New Mexican restaurant. It tells me right away if I will be back. We will be back. My younger self would not have been brave enough to venture into this place. Fairly dimly lit parking lot in a strip mall and the windows tint made it look dark inside. It wasn't. It was lovely. We decided to try this restaurant for my husband's birthday based on the excellent reviews. We were not disappointed. Our party had enchiladas, tamales, nachos, fajitas, and guacamole. Everything was very fresh and tasted great. My husband and daughter are guac fans and really loved it here. I'm a tamale fan and am often disappointed, but these were fantastic. Food made me sick. Chicken enchiladas was something I had never seen made this was before. Piles of cheese with crumbled chicken just ON TOP not inside. Some of the cheese looked to be microwaved processed shredded cheese. Stomach began turning on way home and got nauseous when I got home. Decor is awful inside. We did really enjoy the food at Pineda's. We went there in January around the cold snap. It is kind of a smallish place and seating is crowded. We found a "bench & chair" situation. Even there, we noticed a cold draft when anyone entered or left the restaurant. There was also live music! A nice older biker kind of guy was singing oldies to his guitar. Pleasant. Saw a nice private room that would fit 6 to 8 comfortably. I think that is where some regulars come to gather and eat. Nice touch! Wait staff is very attentive. Family friendly. read more
