After a long day of adventures neither of us were up for cooking. Decided last minute on Trattoria Amalfi in Salem. And trust me, it lives up to the hype. Since it was spontaneous we clearly didn't have a reservation. They told us 25-30. Perfect. Sat at the bar for a drink while we waited. The service was second to none. Wonderful staff! In less than the time predicted we were seated in a wonderfully romantic nook! My gf got the Chicken Danielle and I got the chicken parm. The chicken parm was so delicious and tender that it melted in your mouth. The Chicken Danielle was outstanding and now I know what I am getting when we come back! Reservations - super easy to call and make a reservation. I was worried they weren't going to be able to accommodate our large group of 12 but it was no problem the week of but it all worked out. I was even able to move up the reservation when our plans changed the day of. The restaurant is in a random shopping complex in Salem, NH. We were driving North for a race so the stop here was a nice break in the drive. Not going lie, when we were walking towards the restaurant, it looked a tiny bit sketch - wrapping across all the windows. Slightly deserted shopping complex. But when we walked in, wow it was so beautiful inside, very spacious, huge bar to the left and then large dining area to the right. There were cozy booths lined up against the perimeter of the room. The staff was so incredibly warm and welcoming. We were a very loud group (sorry!); 12 adults, mostly dudes, laughing uncontrollably at all the dumb jokes. None of the staff was upset by this though; our server was so much fun and even joined in. Food is fantastic. HUGE portions. I love chicken parm, I also love eggplant parm. They have a menu item of both of them together. It doesn't get much better than that. read more

Summary: good but not exceptional Italian food in a nice setting with excellent service. We were a party of 6 and sat at a round table in the middle of the room. It got pretty noisy. The cozy booths would be a good option for 2-4 people; much quieter and still affording good views of the room, decorated in a typical Italian theme. If you've read my reviews before you know I despise TVs in restaurants and they had several but I'm happy to report they were all in a separate bar space, not visible or audible from the dining room. We shared four appetizers and each got our own entrees. The apps we ordered were: Clams Casino: 5 good sized clams. Fortunately one member of our group of 6 doesn't like clams. The rest of us liked them. Mussels In Scampi Sauce: A big portion of very fresh medium-sized mussels. Lots of sauce which could have used more garlic and parsley, and bread should be served with it but was not. Antipasto d'Amalfi: Good for what it was but very expensive for the portion at $22. For our party of 6 we could have used two even with our other apps and entrees. (In general, the appetizers here seemed overpriced while the entrees were all quite reasonable.) Also, I think they left out the tuna which was listed as an ingredient - unless one of my companions grabbed it first! Stuffed Artichoke: Good flavor from the buttery, seasoned breadcrumbs, but not an attractive presentation. The leaves were mostly removed from the core and carelessly arrayed on the plate, making it hard to find the good ends and taking away most of the fun of eating this peculiar vegetable. My entree was Shrimp & Scallop Puttanesca with linguini. I'd rate it average. The sauce could definitely have been spicier and should have had more capers and olives. The shrimp wasn't the greatest though it was fresh. They left the tails on; one of my peeves. Scallops were fine. Pasta was correctly cooked but like all the pastas served here it was dried, not fresh. I'd hope an Italian restaurant of this level would have at least some fresh pastas but I don't think they did. The menu did say that all the pastas were imported from Italy though. The wife's Veal Carrozzella though was outstanding. I could tell this from the one bite I tried. It's listed on the menu as "Scaloppine of Provimi veal sautéed with egg-battered mozzarella in a sage wine sauce". Interesting how it was the mozzarella, not the veal, that was battered. Entree portions were large. I got 2 1/2 servings from mine, but I did eat a lot of appetizers first. The veal entree was also at least 2 servings. I had some interesting cocktails. One was a Honey Sazerac which hit all the marks for a good Sazerac. With its name I'd expect honey flavor but I didn't detect any. Unfortunately I don't remember the other cocktail except that it was on the rocks, fruity, and had some flowery flavor overtones. They had a large selection of "craft cocktails", and not all the same ones we see everywhere these days. One of my companions ordered a bottle of wine for the table which was excellent but I don't remember the name. There was a good selection, many of which were "affordable". Entree selection was very large, with many chicken, veal, pasta, and seafood items to choose from, most of the standard Italian dishes you'd expect and more. Only one beef item: a ribeye with Pizzaiola sauce. Now for the service. It was excellent. I found it slow but I realize now our waitress read the group perfectly who as a whole wanted a leisurely evening so she paced perfectly for that, giving us time to enjoy our first drinks before taking appetizer orders, not bringing the entrees too soon after the apps, and so on. We were there 2 1/2 hours. Her habit of reaching across the table to deliver and pick up dishes was a bit awkward and unusual but didn't really bother me. Our request to split the check 3 ways was handled cheerfully and accurately even though two couples were sitting side-by side and the other were across from one another. With all that food I had no room for dessert. Two or three of my party did get dessert and they looked interesting enough. I did have coffee but it wasn't good at all. Go there often, but not often enough. Live about 40 minutes away so Villagio's in Manchester NH is much closer and is about as good (food wise). Atmosphere wise, Villagio's. Portion wise, Amalfi's. Anyway, the food is always excellent. The owner always dresses to the nine's. Like she is going to a prom/wedding. I have never had a bad dish. I'm Italian and do not enjoy Italian restaurants as I grew up with wonderful home made meals. You can go anywhere u choice however the food at Amalfi's is without question authentic Italian cuisine. Do urself a favor and try it. You will be back. It's mouth watering delicious authentic Italian food. The folks who run it are gracious and very welcoming. You will be pleased with yourself that you went. The atmosphere is charming and the staff cannot do enough to please you. I cannot say enough about Amalfi's! This restaurant is always busy. Reservations are tough to get. Some dishes here are excellent like the American staples like Chicken Parm or meatballs. My wife got the scampi and it had little to no taste. When I made it at home a few weeks later she said it was 100x better than the dish there. We had reservations for 7 people at 7:30 and had to still wait a little while to sit which was fine. We sat down and the waitress was nice enough but not great which again I understand working with the public. I ordered the pink sauce with pasta and it was dry so I asked for a little extra sauce and was told they would need to charge me because it is made per order. The sauce is literally red sauce and alfredo mixed and your telling me you don't have a boat load of it on a Saturday night? The next thing was I brought a small birthday cake along with plastic plates, knife and candles as to not bother them and I was informed I would be charged $3 per person in order to have the cake - I didn't even ask them to cut it - I did it! A friend invited me here for dinner, because it's her favorite Italian restaurant. She has now lost all credibility with me. I ordered the pasta carbonara, and it was without doubt the worst pasta carbonara I have ever had. Pasta carbonara is supposed to be made with egg yolks and parmesan; there was no egg in the sauce and the pasta was swimming in olive oil. I ate a couple of bites and that was it. My husband took the kids and I took us to Trattoria Amalfi for my birthday dinner. We made a 7pm reservation on a Thursday, requesting the sought after booths I keep hearing about. Highly recommend making a reservation. We pulled up to a dimly lit strip mall that looked abandoned. Even the restaurant was dim from the outside. I told him this must be it and hopped out! My conclusions were right. All 60 cars in the lot were there for this small from the outside, homey, and festively decorated restaurant. We were greeted by a friendly host who took us to our private-feel booth. I love the set up of these tables. The kids were decently behaved and didn't bug anyone around us. Major parent win. Shoutout to Donna for being helpful with menu selections, sweet, and just a down to earth person. We appreciate you and you should be recognized! We started with the mozzarella and the garlic bread. They brought over a basket of hot, fresh, baguette style bread with butter. The kids split the starter shrimp scampi, half an order of ravioli and a meatball. My husband had the chicken parm and I ordered the dinner shrimp scampi. After seeing the dessert display, I opted for the toasted almond tiramisu because that's my favorite. This was the best slice I've had from anywhere. I'll certainly keep you posted if I find someone who can top it. Just a note on the pricing. It's a little higher than most places, with smaller portions, but I ordered more knowing this and wasn't shocked when we got the bill, as it was previously mentioned in other reviews. It was an incredible night out from start to finish. Everything was hot and delicious! No one left hungry and I had a doggy bag for later. Never judge a restaurant from the outside. My all time favorite Italian restaurant. If you are in town, you MUST go try Amalfi but make sure to call for a reservation, definitely on the weekend. Everything is delicious and the service is amazing! The portions are very generous where I always have left overs! The ambiance is very nice and welcoming. There are Beautiful murals/art on the walls and great spacious booths which are very comfortable! It's a family owned restaurant and they are the sweetest! The food, staff, and atmosphere at this restaurant are generally great--no complaints there. Unfortunately, we ran into an issue with our bill: we were charged individually for each round of sodas we ordered. This struck us as unusual, as most restaurants that offer fountain drinks typically include free refills. While Trattoria Amalfi is certainly within its rights to charge per round, we found it misleading that this policy wasn't mentioned on the menu or communicated by our server. When we brought it up with both the waitress and the manager, they came across as apathetic and became defensive when justifying the charge. Spending over $30 on sodas didn't feel great, and I wish the policy had been made clearer somewhere along the way. Lesson learned--next time, I'll be sure to ask first. read more

My outing at Trattoria Amalfi started off surprisingly well considering how busy they were tonight 10/02/25. We arrived to find a crowd in the foyer of the restaurant expecting a long wait however we were shown to a table within minutes and were pleasantly surprised . Well that was the high point of the evening , it was downhill from there . After being seated we were given water and bread almost immediately . The waitress arrived and took our drink order and we also ordered an appetizer . Now I get that the place was busy so it wasn't surprising that our app and drinks took a little while to arrive . The drinks were excellent , the appetizer not quite as good., I've had better . Up until this point things weren't that bad, but our waitress disappeared for while leaving my friend and I wondering when she would come to take the order for the main course. She eventually came back to the table , took our order and sped away , and we wouldn't see her until almost 25 minutes later at which time she cheerfully announced that amazingly she had forgotten to " push the button" to submit our food order , she was " very surprised" as she put it that she had forgotten to " push the button" and that our food would take " a little while longer to arrive ". If ever there were an understatement that was it . she sped off into the night after asking if we'd like another round of drinks which arrived a short time later. But alas the main course was still nowhere to be found. When the waitress reappeared she again started announcing cheerfully that she " just could not believe she had forgotten push the button to order our main course. By this time my friend and I had lost our appetites and were very disappointed at the turn of events. I flagged down another waitress and asked to see the manager , it was at this point the out waitress came out with a tray containing our entrees, more then An hour after ordering them . I informed her that we were no on her hungry and wanted to leave . Her cheerful demeanor vanished and she said she would bring our check for the drinks and appetizer .The manager never came to speak to us to offer any form of apology for the ruined evening , they did remove the charge for the appetizer however . This was without a doubt the worst service I've ever had at a restaurant , compounded by the fact that no apology was ever offered . Needless to say this will without a doubt be the last time we go anywhere near this place. I would highly recommend for anyone planing to go to Trattoria Amalfi that you have a backup plan for the evening because you may be left to starve at your table due to the incompetence of the staff at this establishment . read more

As I was reading prior Yelp reviews from being out of state, I decided to look into Trattoria Amalfi and try it out. Ambiance overall was outstanding, coming into a side of little Italy. The service was outstanding my server was absolutely phenomenal checking on me and making sure I was doing okay. I had come at a rough time where there were 5-6 larger parties. I myself being a party of one. I had waited over an hour and a half for my meal, completely understandable. It's not my first rodeo in fine dining restaurants. Went to use the restroom hoping to be able to have my food come out by that time. I ordered the Chicken Amalfi. I was not pleased with the presentation. The mushrooms were sautéed perfectly, texture, and flavor. The pasta was very greasy and way too tender and soft. The breaded "stuffed" chicken came out fresh, hot, and tender but due to the lack of flavor from the chicken itself and I don't know if I'd even call it stuffed myself as to how small the stuffed portion was along with I had to eat all the way to the half part of the chicken in order to reach the "stuffed" section. A few couple bites into the meal all I feel is my blood pressure shoot through the roof from all of the sodium. Tried putting Parmigiano Reggiano on the pasta yet still lacking flavor. I tried to eat as much as I could to not be rude about my meal but even then it was too much too handle. I could've called it quits in the beginning but that would look as if I didn't even remotely touch my plate. Due to the long wait time for my food (which again is understandable due to larger parties) I had to bring my server over to talk to me privately and let them know that genuinely I was displeased with the satisfaction and overall experience I had endured. They had told me they would talk to management to see what they could do to help my experience. Sitting for about 10 minutes with a grease full stomach and boiling blood pressure. My server came back over very politely and apologized for my experience. Then proceeded to sit the check on the table, yet no complimentary discount or even a complimentary dessert. Management had not even come over themselves to apologize. After paying for my bill and tipping my server very graciously, I proceeded to head to my car where I had thrown up inside of my mouth on the way out from the dish itself. I do not think it is a terrible dish. As I had told my server there needs to be something robust inside of the dish itself to really capture its true form. As I had gotten home I had thrown up in my toilet due to an upset stomach still even after it all. I decided to call the restaurant and speak to the manager myself directly. I had explained in full as to why I was displeased with my meal and upset with how the after care of the service was handled by management. Here is where we are at now. I hope that people know and understand I have no vendetta against this place staff or management and I had tried one of their many selections that they have to choose from but my experience was genuinely awful. I recommend to choose something other than the Chicken Amalfi, until they have readjusted the recipe itself. $40 later, an upset stomach, and very displeased with the management. Went last night. Made a reservation three days in advance and requested a booth in the bar. Its been a few months since we dined there. James was our server. He did a great job, very pleasant and appeared each time at the right moment. Cocktail, italian wine, apps, entrees and dessert on point. Haddock francese, perfectly prepared and stuffed pork chops, not one but two massive chops. Great flavor. Place got crowded fast - only downside is the overflow waiting - stood in front of our booth blocking view. Really don't want to hear what other people have to say. Please be mindful of where you stand and what you say. Not the restaurants fault, as the lobby was packed and it was cold out. When the check came, needless to say, we got our money's worth - and went home with another meal. Have to go back soon to try other entrees...or go for the chops again. Well I'm shocked it took me so long to get to this Restaurant. I mean I lived in Derry, NH forever before moving to the Seacoast. It is by far the best Real Italian food I have had in forever. The food was out of this world, I had the Amalfi special which was so abundant, it took me three meals before I could finish it all. The service was excellent , though very busy in a Saturday night, the place was packed. It was amazing. Make sure to make reservations and a good attitude because it's a quaint little place, booths are available if requested. I just can't say enough about it. The best little Italian joint in a strip mall. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't super apprehensive when I saw the strip mall, but everyone in the area raved about it. We're glad we listened. We went on a Saturday and it was packed at 4pm! The portions are HUGE and we'll made. Very impressed with the Frutti di Mare. Wife got a chicken cut special that was so big she took most of it home and ate it over several days. Our only gripe is the decor. It looks a bit like a stereotypical Italian restaurant from the 40's. I think an investment in the style would go a long way. Overall, best Italian food we've had since moving from Boston. Brought my wife here for our anniversary and it was good. For the area. For 2023. We stayed local rather than heading into the city because she worked all day in one city and I didn't want to drag her back out to another. I was happy to make a reservation, and you have to, well, I had to since we had decided 27 years ago to get married over Mother's Day weekend. As an aside, don't do this, if you can avoid it. Do you know how hard it has been over the years to fight with all the people scrambling to show their mother they care on that one day a year? The restaurant is in a strip mall, but it is clean and the hostess was elegantly dressed. Our waitress was wonderful, very attentive. But it was Mother's Day Weekend and it was packed. Ambiance is exactly what you would expect from an Italian Restaurant. In a strip mall. In the area. In 2023. Apparently it was also what I expected over 20 years ago (?) when we last visited this restaurant. My wife reminded me that I complained about it back then too. I have no recollection of that. The food. I need to preface this by telling you that I am 1/4 Italian. Also 1/4 French. My Mother always made sure to add "Parisian French." Sorry Canada. So I know what I'm talking about when it comes to food-it's in my blood. For the sake of transparency, I should mention that the other 1/2 of me me is Irish. Sorry, is that burying the lede? Anyway, you can trust me. I've managed over our 27 years together to help coach my wife into being the kind of cook where people have to do a double take because her food is that delicious. I'm not kidding. It's why we rarely go out. Or when we go out, I try not to go to places where we are likely to find dishes she specializes in. It's not worth it. During this time where I have refined my food snobbery, I have arranged to increase my belt size many times over to ensure my expertise is on display, should anyone question it. They usually don't once I mention the 1/4 Italian AND 1/4 French. "Parisian French." You should see the look of intimidation in the eyes of those to whom I reveal my expertise. There is also a non-verbal "Aha," they always say with their eyes. (Also, sorry Ireland, it's not that your food can't be good, it just doesn't bring the same admiration from the people I am impressing with the Parisian drop). So, for 2023, I decided to bypass that expertise and go to a local place that serves food that my wife specializes in. Unassuming place in the corner of a small plaza, if you didn't know they were there, it'd be easy to miss them. The inside has nice decor, including nooks for smaller tables. They take reservations, just need to call. Parry of 8 was seated prompty. Everyone was pleased with their meals. Portions sizes were hearty; they offer half size portions, if you're ordering a bunch of apps. Save room for dessert, lots of great options. In one word, Fantastic! I've heard about Trattoria Amalfi for awhile now and finally got a chance to try it last night. As I saw in another review, I was surprised by the location in a dark strip mall but quickly changed my mind when we went in the front door. I felt like I had walked through a travel portal into Italy. The ambiance was excellent. The hostess was very pleasant and dressed in a formal gown. Our reservation was confirmed and, despite it being crowded and a Saturday night, we were seated right away into our "private" booth which was very cozy. The waiter (never got his name) was very pleasant and attentive, getting us drinks and Calamari for an appetizer right away. He came back a bit later and we ordered 3 dishes, Veal Parm, Chicken Marsala, and Chicken Venetian and a glass of red wine. All were done to perfection and were delicious. We had leftovers and no room for desert unfortunately. Will be back to try more dishes. read more

I can't say enough good things about this Trattoria! Have been going for years. Food quality is exceptional. Service is always top notch and the ambiance is remarkable. The only places that come close to this quality are Ronaldos in North Hampton New Hampshire or The north end in Boston MA. I usually either the veal or chicken parmesan with Angel Hair pasta and a good Pinot Noir to accompany the excellent cuisine. Highly recommended. read more
