I got the salmon and my boyfriend got the fish of the day, and we shared the crab cakes as an appetizer. The crab cakes weren't anything terribly remarkable (3/5). The salmon was good...but to me it just lacked in taste (3.5/5). My boyfriend's fish of the day was also just okay (3/5). I'm not quite sure what it was about the food- maybe it just wasn't fresh ingredients- but nothing really stood out to me and the flavor fell a little flat on everything. Sweet cozy Swedish Bistro on Foster Ave. Staff is friendly, helpful and great with service. I think I like this place better than Ann Sathers.. (Though Ann serves free Cin. rolls.!) The Vanilla & Orange French toast is fantastic, made with the extra FAT slices, the Quiche and omelets are excellent. The orange juice is great, fresh squeezed. My profession allows me to take wonderful seniors on day trips; Tre Kronor was where we dined for lunch during our Swedish themed adventure last month. Pros: wonderful wait staff, good portions, decent atmosphere. Excellent breakfast/brunch/lunch option. Cons: the party room we ate in was quite dirty and it appeared that there were still Christmas-like decorations hanging up. Not sure whether or not the group I was chaperoning noticed the dust and junk on the floor, but I did. Overall, the food that we came for was good. I had the spinach and mushroom quiche as my entree and the lemon tart for dessert. Personally, I like a firm quiche, but this was not so. I heard that the breakfast is phenomenal. Unfortunately, it was decent, but not mind blowing for me or my dining companion. We came here on Boxing Day and it was super crowded. We got lucky and found a table for two but it was in the path of the front door and my friend kept getting bumped. It kind of sucked. We thought that there was a Chicago ordinance that said there should be a clear path... who knows, it was just a little uncomfortable for us both since she kept getting bumped. We ordered the eggs Benedict and the veggie omelet with spinach and blue cheese. Wow, the blue cheese really over powered my food and kind of killed it for me. The spinach was also kind of bitter too, like it needed to cook a little longer. My friend Benedict seemed decent and to her liking so there was at least one hit. Servers although very pleasant, were a little slow and coffee refills had to be requested, probably cause they allow way too many people in the restaurant at one time. They would probably be better off with communal tables if they want to seat that many people at one time in such a small space. The multitude of scattered tables made for animated haphazard collisions. In any case, I'll definitely be back for dinner, breakfast, I'll pass. read more

BEAUTIFUL OUTDOOR GARDEN, FANTASTIC FOOD On a Saturday morning, I needed some peace and quiet. I needed some time "alone" to gather my thoughts. I sat in their beautiful, peaceful and quiet outdoor courtyard garden (patio). It IS an oasis of peace and quiet. The food is always consistent and fantastic. I had my usual dish -- the Oslo omelette -- smoked salmon with cream cheese and dill. Always delicious, satisfying and tasty. My breakfast was $13 and change (excluding tip). It was 7:15 a.m. when I arrived. I ordered right away -- didn't need a menu. Waited. Waited. Waited. It was 7:40 a.m. and my breakfast had not arrived. There were 3 customers inside the restaurant. One table had 6 customers filled with people over age 60. The 2nd table was occupied by a 30-something couple. Once again, it was a bit crazy inside the restaurant with "Seniors Gone Wild." Suffice it to say it was obnoxiously loud. I don't want to listen to who had surgery, who got divorced, who died and other gossipy nonsense. I cannot take noise, loud conversation and chaos early in the a.m. I enjoy waking up at 5 a.m. (sometimes earlier) so I can enjoy a quiet morning before everyone in the house wakes up. I love my peace and quiet in the morning. I knew I wasn't going to get "my peace and quiet" inside the restaurant, so I decided to sit outside. Wow I am glad I made this decision! The sun is (was) shining brightly and there is (was) a gentle breeze on this gorgeous, perfect summer day. The birds are chirping away. The garden courtyard is quiet and beautiful. Sparrow birds are hopping around on the brick paved patio. Best of all, my breakfast was very, very good. The food IS always fantastic. One of my favorite places and seriously the best coffee. The atmosphere is very comforting and the outdoor garden is adorable & quaint. We typically go for weekend brunch which is always popular (while you wait for a table you can visit the Sweden Shop across the street). Occasionally the service can take a little while but everyone is so nice and this is such a great place to hang out that I don't mind- order one of their delicious pastries and sip on some coffee and you're all set! Well how to begin. I was one of a party of 10 to celebrate a dear friend and colleagues 80th birthday. I'd been to Tre Kroner several times in the past for the Yulebord and for lunch. Ordered the potato leek soup for appetizer....meh I mean it was ok but nothing to write home about served tepid not hot. Then came dinner honestly I looked at those surrounding me and also my plate and it honestly looked like it was dished up and then warmed in a microwave. I got the roast duck breast( I don't think it was a whole breast half or it was a duckling served with a lingonberry, wild rice and green beans with almond slices. This was a plate for a person with stomach capacity of a mouse. Wasn't really hot when served, looked like it had been plated then heated up . Same with a seat mate who got the roast pork with red cabbage potatoes and some kind of sauce. Nothing was really extraordinary looking. They should have buttered the toast instead of handing out 2 pads of butter, my opinion. The only criticisms I had: the pancake syrup and preserves were both high fructose syrup Smucker's, truly below par stuff for a serious breakfast establishment. They need to replace these at once. I humbly didn't think that the lingonberry sauce /compote was quite right for the Swedish pancakes; I've had better. But I'm not familiar with true Swedish cooking having never been there. The perfect brunch spot to satiate my hunger after stepping off the plane. The service there is great, they're super friendly and accommodating (quickly making space for a group of 16!), and there was no wait when we went on a Thursday morning. The restaurant space is also super cute, and decorated with random Swedish themed knick knacks. Now on to the food. We were given some biscuit things to start off our meal, which were quite hard and flavorless, but tasted great with the various jams and butter they had (random note: apparently the butter was really good). To start, we had the pickled herring, which was delicious, not too sour, but just perfectly complementing the fish. My first time having the dish but I was a fan. All of the meals we ordered were delicious, whether it was the eggs with hash or the Belgian Waffle. Particular standouts include the (fresh?) whipped cream (you can ask for a side of it) and the quiche. I had the quiche with salmon and dill, and I was blown away by the fluffiness of the quiche. As one of my friends described it, it was like eating on a cloud. I think I'd go for the mushroom and spinach quiche next time because I didn't like like the combination of the consistency of the cooked flakes of salmon with the super fluffy quiche (a personal preference thing, just felt like it would have gone better with mushroom and spinach). Actually the theme among all the orders seemed to be the supreme fluffiness of the food (the omelette was also super fluffy as was the French toast). Everyone in my party raved about the food and their experience at this cute neighborhood brunch restaurant. Still eating here currently but I have one word to describe this place so far; refreshing. I ordered the Joia sparkling to drink, (it's blackberry, pomegranate, and ginger) and it's so delicious. We also had the lox with mustard on bread and that didn't fail to impress us either. We got the onion soup which also was delicious. One more thing we got was the beet salad with beets, goat cheese, oranges, and a vinaigrette. SO GOOD! Still eating, so I'll update this when we get our Swedish meatballs. Update: the meatballs were delicious! Honestly the lingonberry sauce was incredible, and the mashed potatoes were super creamy and the perfect taste. The lemon tart was a little too runny, and a little overpowering, but that was my only problem with the all the food we had. Would definitely come to this place again. If real men don't eat quiche, count me out of manhood... wow. I have visited a number of times in the past few years and have always had delighted tastebuds and leave as though I am leaving my mom's house after a meal. My first visit was a few years ago with a group so it was a limited menu. Being over 100 lbs larger then with a big appetite, the quiche sounded good but I was expecting a flat little quiche.I went with the Swedish meatballs. They were good but when I saw the mile high pie style quiche, I had regrets. Since my first visit my question is what quiche will I have today as they change their special quiches daily. Yesterday was Brie and Bell peppers. I wish I could describe the light fluffy texture of the eggs, with the perfect crunch of crust and the bell peppers at the perfect cook. I savored every bite. But let's not forget the Sweedish Cucumber Salad. If I come in and hear the words" "we are sold out of the quiche for the day", I still have the salad to look foward to. It's the perfect sweet, salty, crunchy cucumber salad that is made from scratch daily but always taste the same. I may not have Sweedish roots, but I'll join the family if I get to eat like this. Update: 1/22/2018.5 star to 4 star change I was in the area so I decided to come over and have quiche. I ordered the Salmon, Dill Quiche. Either this was day old or they did something different then the last one because I am confident it was reheated by a microwave. It clearly was not cut out of the whole, as the sides were cooked and the center was beyond hot, which made it unenjoyable and caused the salmon to be overcooked and have a chalky texture. Tre Kronor is a lovely Mom-and-Pop that was just around the corner from the place my boyfriend and I were staying at. We came in at around 4pm for a late lunch/early dinner and were instantly greeted. First impressions of the restaurant was how intimate and cozy the place was! It definitely had an inviting Scandinavian theme. I opted for the Swedish meatballs and my boyfriend had the Reuben. The swedish meatballs were the best comfort food for that chilly day! The side of mashed potatoes were rich and creamy as well! I also enjoyed the pickled cucumbers as a palate cleanser. My boyfriend also enjoyed his Reuben, as he said it was the best Reuben he's had in a while! For dessert, we had some chocolate mousse which was yummy as well, though nothing that made it stand out in particular. We also had some coffees as well. Our beverages were constantly refilled throughout our time there. Wonderful service by Lars! At the end of the meal, Lars brought our check with some biscuits (they tasted similar to Digestives from the UK!). My sis and I come here at least once a year. We have a special day out and come here for lunch. It's always just good food. Last time I got the quiche and it was so light and fluffy. Yum. It comes with a nice fresh fruit side. The food is fresh and the wait staff is helpful. They also have some unusual drinks. I got a lavender one once, but even the low sugar one had too much sugar for me. If you like that kind of drink, try one of them out. They never rush us, even though the place is crowded. It took awhile to take our order and bring over the water & coffee. Our waitress was noticeably more interested in her friends that were sitting next to us (and arrived after us). We waited what seemed like forever for our food to arrive, had to request a coffee refill ... enjoyed the beautiful space but when the food still had not arrived nor did the waitress attempt to check on the arrival, we got up and left.
