My husband contacted Paul for an estimate to trim up the 3 large palm trees in our yard as well as completely remove a giant (12ft tall) bird of paradise with a root system that was threatening to grow into the foundation of our home. Paul came to our house a couple of days after contacting him about the estimate. He was on time and very professional. He was able to schedule us two days later to do all of the work, which was wonderful. His price quote for the work was very fair, and he was forthright about potential complications with removing the bird of paradise (drainage pipe and irrigation lines entwined in the root system). Paul and his crew arrived at our house slightly early and got right to work. Everyone on his team were professional and worked hard to get the job done quickly and correctly. We were amazed with the job they did! There is no sign of the bird of paradise even being in our yard. They cut it down completely, dug out the stump, and filled in the hole including putting mulch on top of the new dirt to match the rest of our side yard. They also did not damage any of the drainage or irrigation system. Additionally, our palm trees look wonderful and we are no longer at risk of having large palm fronds fall off the tree and hit our home for a while. They left our yard looking so much better and left behind absolutely no mess, including sweeping the back patio. Tree Barber has been around for a while, and we used them for the first time about 16 years ago. They did a fantastic job, but were a little higher priced than other tree trimmers. Since that time we've used several different tree trimming companies - NONE of them ever came close to providing the level of service that Tree Barber gave us. We learned our lesson - this is definitely one of those cases where you get what you pay for. So after several bad experiences we decided it was time to pay a little more and work with a truly professional company. We've used Tree Barber twice over the past 18 months. Both times I met with Paul beforehand to discuss the work to be done, get the estimate and schedule the trimming. Both times his guys were punctual, friendly, professional, and extremely careful with our landscape lighting, irrigation heads, and plantings in the yard. We have three large and valuable date palms in our front yard - the crew trimmed and then sculpted "pineapples" into them for an amazing look. Both times the crew was on our property for more than a day, and both times they left our yard looking as if they had never stepped foot in it - except for the trees looking amazing, of course!!! Previous tree trimmers had broken lighting, sprinkler heads, dropped branches on our rose bushes, and left piles of debris. The Tree Barber crew left the yard in pristine condition. Paul was on hand to answer questions and to do some of the more delicate "lacing" work. This isn't a couple of guys with a chain saw, a pole saw and a panel truck - this is the real deal. I just had the Tree Barber crew come out for my annual maintenance, and they did an excellent job with all of the things that are too big for me to handle: my California fan palm, my ornamental pear, my 70 feet of Eugenia hedge, my giant Bird of Paradise, and my overgrown bougainvillea. They gave the pear tree a very natural shape and got it away from my roof. They took all of the dead wood out of the bougainvillea and gave it a much better silhouette for my garden. I like the fact that the same crew come every year, and they can usually work me into the schedule in less than two weeks. The Tree Barber is awesome! We had an avocado tree limb snap and break onto my neighbors property and we needed someone that day. Tree Barber came right out and was able to get the debris off of my neighbors property. Then they returned the next day to trim 11 of our trees. They gave us a reasonable price and gave us a lot of good advice on how to better care for our trees. We have mostly avocado and citrus trees. They did a great job, cleaned up the yard so you'd never know work had been done, we're professional and hard working. We recently purchased a house that's in desperate need of trees. We were planning to put in about $10K worth of trees but I was completely overwhelmed with the selection process. 100% analysis paralysis. I had some work done recently by the Tree Barber. Paul was very nice to talk to and offered a lot of good advice and put our mind at ease with some trees we thought we were having problems with but it turned out we were just under-watering. Our large Crepe Myrtle has already started flowering since talking to him. He trimmed a huge coral tree which was experiencing some large broken branches, some birch trees, a large melaleuca tree and an overgrown ficus for us and even stacked some of the wood for us, at our request, to use in our fireplace. They removed everything else leaving our yard looking nice. By his own admission, he's probably a little more expensive than the competition, but his company is bonded, does great work and cleans up nicely after they were done. Plus, he was at the job site himself, supervising the crew. He provided an accurate up-front estimate with no surprises after the work was done. Paul the tree barber recently thinned out, removed dead wood, and lightly shaped my youngish Mimosa tree. I specifically looked for an experienced arborist for this job, because I wanted to keep the lovely mimosa shape, but lessen the likelihood of wind damage as the tree is on the top of a hill. Paul and his crew come out for a decent size job in Solana Beach which included removing several large trees as well as an artistic trimming of several more. His quote was on the higher side, but I was assured that the quality of the trimming and would be very good along with the overall service. The first day went fine but on the second day when Paul wasn't present, it was a disaster. The crew were extremely poor quality. The first palm was nearly stripped bare and I had to tell them the exact amount to trim or I would have had nothing left. Then on the "artistic trim" portion, it looked awful. The crew kept telling me they were done and I'd have to go out and show them that the job was only half done. It was a Friday and they were just truing to leave for the weekend. At one point the crew started to scream at each other and it looked like they were going to have a physical altercation so I ran outside to break it up. The overall experience was absolutely horrible. I repeatedly tried calling Paul that day but he didn't respond until about two days later. In the end, he came out to look at the job and basically said the crew "had a bad day, it happens" and reluctantly offered $100 off. I would never recommend them and would never use them again. read more

A neighbor had The Tree Barber do their yard and it always looks so nice, so we got an estimate. Paul came out, very friendly, knowledgeable and I wouldn't have to wait 3-4 weeks. He said he could do the huge ficus tree and 2 palm trim the following week, he'd check to see which day and get back to me. Great! Only, he didn't call, I called him after 6 days. We were having our house painted also, so scheduled the painting to begin the day after. Tree trimming was to be Wed., painting Thurs. Paul called on Tuesday afternoon to say he was tied up and wouldn't be coming Wed. He'd call when he could squeeze us in. Huh? I didn't hear from him for 3 weeks! When he did call (on a Wed.), left a message he'd be out the middle to end of the following week. Again, I didn't hear from him, so I called the office on Monday morning. She'd get a message to him and have him call. He called Monday night to say my job was just too small, he wasn't going to be able to do it - EVER. Wow! That was professional! I didn't appreciate him stringing me along for an entire month, then canceling. I told Paul the first time he canceled that I scheduled the painting around HIS schedule. He assured me they wouldn't mess up the paint, they do this all of the time. Doesn't seem very reliable, even if he does do a good job. read more

We had Paul and his crew come out last week and take care of four trees on our property. We had four quotes from various companies and Paul's was higher than others. However he was the only one who came over with references and insurance proof at the time of the quote. That and the reviews we saw here and from the BBB helped us to make him our choice to go with. The crew arrived about 15 minutes before the scheduled time and got to work right away. He said that the job might take two days based on the amount of work they would have to do. However at about 11:00, I received a text from my wife stating that they had already done the two biggest trees and were starting on the third. Then about 4:00 she said they were done. when I got home the difference was amazing! The property looked great. They had cut, shaped, laced, trimmed and cleaned up all four trees. I could hardly tell that they had been there as everything had been completely cleaned up. I will definitely use them again when we need more service. If you choose the Tree Barber, I don't believe you will be disappointed. read more
