I ate at Trellis not too long ago. Although I have to say the atmosphere outside on the terrace is quite nice, the service could use some work. My family and I had to wait over an hour for our order, and when the waiter finally brought it out to us, he tripped on the stairs and dropped 2 out of 4 plates down the steps! We then had to wait another half hour for our food! And the worst part... we had to pay for everything in full! read more

Just went there on my birthday tonight. Had a great experience with my mom. Ordered just the polenta appetizer, The Scallops in a Provencal sauce and Susan's Downfall pasta. When I told the waiter that my mom and I share, without asking, he actually split the entrees into 2 half orders that looked like the original, just smaller. I was impressed. The food and the coffee were great and again without asking, he brought a flan for my birthday. We will definately go back again. Seriously, something about this place transported me back to Italy. Maybe it was the playlist in the background with songs from the 40's/50's, the decor, and the bread. Whatever it was, I instantly warmed up to this place before ordering a single dish. Our server, Angel, was extremely good-natured and helpful. We ordered Susan's Downfall, best pasta dish on the menu, and another type of pasta with shrimp which was not as memorable. The bread was warm which is such a simple but important touch to beginning a meal. Let's keep the cold, crusty bread for prisons and Oliver Twist. The portions are generous. This was my first visit here. The best part was the service. The inside is very dated and feels stuffy. I think a bit of a makeover could be helpful. I think the cooking could use some sprucing up too. I ordered the Fettuccine Carbonara - described as Fettuccine w/ pancetta, peas & light cream sauce. It was really not good. I can't believe I am saying this but there was actually too much pancetta. Some pancetta is nice, it's fancy bacon for god's sake. But too much leads to too much saltiness which is not ok. Also, the cream sauce was not light and creamy it was clumpy and heavy. Halfway through eating this dish I was a bit disgusted with the way the oils were separating. I feel like I should have read some of the other reviews before going last Saturday. As others have mentioned, the service was quick and friendly and I felt the staff were very genuine. The atmosphere was clean and cozy, if not a little outdated. But for us, as with others, the food was just not great. It was my husband's birthday and we rarely get out, so splurging on a babysitter and a meal is a lot. He had the carbonara and said it was good/fine, but nothing amazing. I had a chicken with light marsala sauce, grilled polenta and steamed veggies. The best part was the polenta, which was light and flavorful and lovely. The chicken was dry/overcooked, so I did not finish it. The vegetables were fine, but nothing to write about. I had a glass of pinot grigio, which was OK but a bit pricey and my husband had a beer. For dessert we had creme brûlée, his favorite, and it was like scrambled egg, not smooth and creamy like it should have been. The waiter asked if everything was Ok but I felt bad about telling him the chicken was not nice. I didn't want to ruin my husband's birthday dinner by being a jerk to the wait staff! Overall, I don't think I'll come back, unless I start hearing rave reviews about the food. Had dinner on the terrace with some business colleagues. The evening was cool but the heaters kept us nice & toasty. The service was good and attentive with the owner always there to oversee that everything went well. The food was very good, especially the carpaccio. Made my way out to Trellis the other day with my girlfriend. It was excellent, with some really good Italian dishes, including one that was perhaps my favorite dish out of any Italian restaurant I've ever been to. Ambiance was also nice, but service was downright lousy, and that's the only thing holding me back from the fifth star in this review. Let's go ahead and elaborate on each of these aspects of the restaurant, though. When you walk into the restaurant, you're welcomed by a restaurant that's minimalist, but still elegant at the same time. Small tables are clothed in white, and simple, cushioned, wooden chairs are seated at them. The rest of the restaurant is simply themed as well. When you arrive, they'll ask if you prefer to sit downstairs or upstairs. We answered "upstairs" simply because the downstairs area looked rather full, with very few vacant tables. What we didn't realize was that "upstairs" meant we'd be eating outdoors, which was actually a really nice treat on a warm summer evening! When you make your way up the stairs, you're greeted by a large outdoor patio, with palm trees interspersed between tables. Most of the view is blocked by buildings on Santa Cruz Ave., but it still feels nice as you sit atop the restaurant with the gentle breeze of the wind blowing through your hair. Once you're seated, though, strap yourself in because the pacing of your dishes can be quite lengthy--painfully slow. A couple two tables to the left us ended up complaining to a busboy that since they were seated 30 minutes ago, they still hadn't seen a server to take their order. The busboy sheepishly volunteered to put the order into the kitchen himself. Fortunately, our order was taken relatively quickly, but that didn't mean it came out quickly. We ended up waiting a good 30 minutes for our entrees to come out. From other reviews I've read of Trellis, this is no anomaly, and they are notorious for their slow and inattentive service. If you can weather through it, though, you'll be pleased with their pasta dishes. Before those came out, we got some white bread along with olive oil and balsamic vinegar. Their bread was really good, although perhaps it was because we had gotten quite hungry while waiting for our food! What of that food, though? I ordered the Susan's Downfall, which was exceptional all around, perhaps my favorite dish that I've ever ordered at any Italian restaurant anywhere. It came out looking exceptional, with ravioli bathed in a gorgonzola cream sauce that had been toasted to perfection before finally being topped with almond slices. The flavor was rich and delightful, with the intense flavor of the gorgonzola balanced by the buttery creaminess of the sauce, and a hint of a crisp lemony flavor. The crunchiness of the almond slices really added to the dish, and I cannot write enough good words about this. If you are a fan of the intense flavor of blue cheeses, Susan's Downfall is a dish that you will love. My girlfriend got their canneloni, which came with two large noodles stuffed with ground veal, spinach, and provolone. Compared to Susan's Downfall, this one was a lot milder, but it had a good flavor to it, too. It was served in a milder red sauce that highlighted the flavor of the meat, and let that take center stage. Overall, another good dish from Trellis. Following that, we ordered two of their dessert items: I opted for their cheesecake, which was served in a strawberry sauce with sliced strawberries on top of it. It was really pretty good, with a nice rich, creamy flavor that is everything you would want from a cheesecake. My girlfriend got their tiramisu, which you'll adore if you like coffee flavors. It came in a rum and coffee sauce that was quite strong. The cake itself was light and fluffy, and I liked the cake, but wasn't as crazy about the strength of the coffee flavor in the sauce. Like the cheesecake, the tiramisu also came with slices of strawberries. Overall, I'd recommend Trellis on a night where you have nowhere else to be. Be prepared for lackadaisical service and a kitchen that's quite slow in getting your dishes out. If you can tolerate that, though, then you'll have some very good dishes and served in a nice ambiance, particularly if you take advantage of the large patio on a nice, warm day. read more

I, like many others, found this place via Groupon. It's a nice little restaurant. Some say it's pricey, but I think the prices are on-par for what you get. The Calamari was really good. It's not your typical calamari rings and tentacles. It's thick, tender strips - most likely Humboldt or some other large squid. The sauce that it came with was almost like a Hollandaise, creamy with a little cheesy taste. We also shared the Apple and Goat Cheese salad, which was absolutely delicious. I ordered the Sonoma Duck breast, and my wife ordered the Lamb Chops. The duck seemed a little over-cooked - at least to me, since I prefer duck on the medium-rare side...but it was very tender, and I loved the sauce that it came with. The Lamb Chops were cooked perfectly, but for some reason lacked flavor. They were good, but not as good as I expected. Presentation was nice. The veggies were great. The Polenta was OK. I didn't really care for Polenta prior to eating here, and their Polenta didn't change my mind, or my taste buds....that's not to say that it's not good. Others that I was with liked it. Service was sub-par. Our waiter wasn't very friendly, but he wasn't unfriendly either...just indifferent. He gave us the bill about 20 minutes after we were done eating, and then didn't even come back to run my credit card. I had to ask the 'water boy' to take my card after waiting about 40 minutes or so for the waiter to come back. The waiter also initially rung up the bill wrong. He didn't deduct the $30 Groupon. When I mentioned this, he asked me if I had given him the paperwork...I reminded him that I handed him the paper when we were first seated. Overall, the food was very good, the prices were just right for what you get, it's a nice, clean place, just don't expect speedy and/or accurate service. read more

Looks like a family run restaurant, and I hate to give such establishments a bad rating, but I'd rather go to Olive Garden then eat here. Food is poor quality or mediocre at best. Had the penne with peas/mushrooms and it was horrible (dilute sauce with no flavor and mushrooms were burnt). Susan's downfall was also a disappointment. Desert was too sweet and the ingredients all the dishes seemed of poor quality or stale. Avoid this place. I left hungry, even after spending $50 between 2 people. read more

Trellis has a welcoming atmosphere because of the staff and the owner/manager who are all very friendly and accommodating. The interiors are older and simple, but do the job in creating a warm atmosphere with the dramatic lighting throughout. I actually expected more from the food with the old world homely feel, but it was somewhat disappointing. The bread was okay, nothing special or fresh. There was a bottle of olive oil and balsamic at the table to mix up and dip if you desire. The wines are decent but pricey by the glass. My gf and I decided to order appetizers. The asparagus mushroom dish was pretty good. The asparagus had a nice crunch to it and went nicely with the mushrooms. If it weren't for the fresh vegetable tastes, this dish would be lacking. The "Steamed fresh Manila clams Provencal" were ANYTHING but fresh. They tasted so bad we didn't finish them, and that is quite an abomination for both of us whose favorite food is seafood. Clams are second to crab for me. It was as if the clams were made earlier, or they were dead way before they hit the pan- reminiscent smell of dead fish was what some of them tasted like. The tomato sauce was pretty flat too and didn't help. The tomatoes didn't taste fresh. The garlic toast was the best part of this dish. The lentil soup sounded good, and it was in an average way- similar to canned lentil soup. Once, again no nuances of flavors really standing out, but it went down thanks to hunger. I did not eat an entree here but took one home to feed the hungry man awaiting me. The special Hawaiian swordfish with jambalaya rice looked like a dish he'd like. I never got to taste it, but he had absolutely no complaints and devoured it like a famished prisoner fresh out of jail. The verdict for this place is that the service and friendliness compares to the quality of food in juxtaposition. It seems some of the dishes may be hit or miss. It's also not cheap to eat here. I need more reliability in the food to bother returning. We're not hurting for other Italian restaurant options in the bay area, either. Unfortunately, Trellis isn't for me. read more

I have eaten at Trellis many times and have tried every other restaurant in Menlo Park over the 20 years I've lived here. This is the best among a very good group of competing venues. Without a doubt this is my favorite Italian restaurant in the Bay Area, including some exceptionally good choices in SF. Given the very reasonable prices and awesome food, I highly recommend giving it a try. My favorite dishes include the calamari, Susan's Downfall, the wild mushroom pastas (various kinds of pasta that change regularly), the beef dishes (also vary regularly), and their braised scallops are always perfect. Seafood dishes are always fresh and perfectly prepared. I'd skip desert, 'cuz there are better near-by places - including Cafe Barronne across the street, but they are also OK. As noted by others, service is just OK but friendly, atmosphere is just OK but it is usually possible to get seated right away without reservations, since they have 3 spacious dinning areas. I give it 5 stars for the exceptional food and variety of dishes, including vegetarian. read more

Trellis Restaurant in Menlo park is a family owned "old world" restaurant. We went there recently for a company party for about 70 people. We had drinks in a hall above the restaurant which also had a fully stocked bar. We came down to the restaurant for dinner. The owner himself was buzzing around the place making sure everything was going well. Dinner began with a serving of Caesar's salad. I am generally not a salad person. And I was not hungry. But each bite of the crunchy salad was delicious. The main course was a choice of fish, beef or Vegan. For vegan they served a penne with portobello mushrooms which was really nice. For dessert, I had spumoni and biscotti which were great. Overall, the food was above average but not excellent. The ambiance was appropriate and servers very courteous. I noticed senior servers constantly monitoring the junior servers making sure they were being attentive. Overall, a nice Italian restaurant and I would probably visit again. read more

I am an adventurous eater. My boyfriend...is not. Trellis somehow manages to satisfy my need for something new and interesting and his need for the comfort of the familiar. He loves the spaghetti bolognese, which he has deamed *almost* as good as mine, I prefer to try something different on each visit. I love the warm, family run feel of this place. I'll take a little bit of character over a cold, corporate machine any day. It's true, the service was not perfect, but it was friendly and welcoming. The owner was holding court over by the bar while we were there most recently, greeting people and chatting with the regulars. Apparently he grows grapes up on the patio, I'd love to sit out there and see for myself sometime. read more

3.5 stars. Overall pretty decent Italian food. Some items are better than others. For the appetizers, the calamari was fresh, came in big pieces and nicely fried but the carpaccio was just OK. The steamed clams were decent but I actually liked the toast that came with it better. For the entrees, Trellis certainly knows how to prepare their seafood. The scallops and prawns were very juicy, tender and definitely not overcooked. The seasoning was light but still rich in flavor. I wasn't as impressed by the other entree items such as beef and veal. The place is small, cozy and a little bit old which I think is part of the charm. The staff is friendly and charming in the Italian way. Not a fancy place but it is clean and neat. Came here for a birthday dinner the other evening.. logged into the YELP application for iPHONE and clicked 'Directions to Here' the directions were all WRONG.. it sent me 20 minutes down El Camino Real IN THE WRONG DIRECTION and I was 30 minutes late to my OWN birthday dinner. I called their phone number TWICe and the gentleman who answered was.. EH somewhat helpful. FIX IT ASAP! GAS IS $4.85 A GALLON IN MENLO. MY CAR TAKES PREMIUM. you're lucky I didn't pay or it would have been ZERO tip. ..SADLY so because the service was phenomenal and the food was also delicious. I had the beef bourguignon and it was tender and SO tasty. even their bread was toasty on the outside and the inside was fluffy like a cloud! +1 star for FOOD, +1 for service. Trellis deserves 3.5 stars IMO, however I won't add anymore because after entering that evening I was furious. Love this place! Every time I have been here, they treat us so well and the food is amazing. Can't get enough of the scallops! Went here with my friends on a Friday night and they had been all booked but managed to get us a table. Our server Murat really made the experience wonderful and is the reason I am writing this! I should start by admitting my experience was limited in that I shared one dessert and an a Italian coffee with a friend, but boy, were they both terrible. I got the apple cake with ricotta which seemed like something scooped out of a tray by a high school lunch lady. The apples tasted slightly rotten and the sauce/paste that surrounded the apples was bland and unpleasant. While I'm sure they do other things better, this was very definitely the worst dessert I've ever had. I also got a $7.50 Italian coffee which I figured must take pretty great if it cost more than the dessert. The first few sips were OK, but by the time the Amaretto syrup settled it was literally undrinkable. It had a terrible syrupy taste and the remaining $5 worth of coffee ended up in planter when the waiter wasn't looking. The rooftop patio was very nice though. read more

What a nice, quaint, homey restaurant this was! Small and cozy, not at all stuffy or pretentious. We shared the polenta appetizer and it was yummy. I've never had real polenta before...closest I've come are those rolls of polenta you can buy at Safeway. Now that I've had the real McCoy, there's no turning back. Ordered the rigatoni and the risotto. Both were very good. Not bland, good mix of spices and flavor. The owner also stopped by our table to mention the upstairs patio and the fact that they have large rooms available for groups. Discovered this place through Groupon, and was pleasantly surprised. From what I saw, the place is tiny, with about 8 tables. Very cozy, but cute with the Italian decor and murals. The cute little old Italian man greeting us didn't hurt either. The service was outstanding. My boyfriend and I were seated right away and didn't have to wait for someone to come take our order. The focaccia was fresh baked, and delicious. Very warm and soft and buttery. The moment our basket of bread was empty, a waiter showed up out of nowhere and brought us another loaf. I was very tempted to take it and stick it in my purse. I got the Risotto with Chicken, Mushrooms, Spinach and Sun-Dried Tomatoes and my boyfriend got the Veal Scaloppini. Both were delicious. The portions were quite generous, and I found the risotto very flavorful. We ended the night with the creme brulee, which was delicious. Ive been there four times now, and always forget to write a review. Since every experience was perfect, I really need to do so :) I don't remember exactly what I got each visit, but it was delicious. I DO remember the homemade bread- OMG heavenly! Don't go if you are gluten intolerant, the fresh bread smell will drive you insane. The veggies and pasta were cooked perfectly. Splurged on tiramisu and creme broule- amazing. The best tirimisu Ive ever had- fresh and flavorful, real coffee liquer. The creme broule was stil crackling from the torch, crispy and perfect onthe top, and creamy and rich underneath. We went on a slow day, and the owner sat with us for a while and urged us to try a couple new things, sharing how it was prepared, and told us about his restuarant. Trellis is our "go to" restaurant at least a couple times a month, and we have been going here for at least 3 years. I highly recommend the apple & goat cheese salad to start, and the cannelloni for an entree. The salad was not at all bland and I ate every bite of it, so I have to disagree with Susan L. My better half swears by the Tiger Prawns with Bordelaise sauce. The mushroom and asparagus appetizer is also a winner. They have a good selection of wines, and when I order a dirty Martini, they make it quite filthy and I love it. The owner and his wife are almost always present and they, along with the rest of the wait staff, are so personable and happy to see us that it makes every visit memorable. For dessert, do not short-change yourself -- GET THE ZABAGLIONE. It's pronounced ZAB-ee-O-nee and will leave you wanting more and more. If you've never had it before, it is a scrumptious egg-cream flavored with (I believe) sweet Marsala, and poured over fresh berries. If you haven't visited Trellis, give it a try. Ordered: Dinner salad (split): ~$5 (?) Susan's Downfall: ~$14 Spaghetti Bolognese: ~$15 The salad was refreshing and fresh! There was also warm, freshly baked bread. Both pastas were really good and decently portioned (although the Susan's Downfall may have only had 10 ravioli's, it was heavy) Service was great!! Our waiter was a really nice older gentleman who checked on us regularly. The best part was when he came by with dessert on the house- delicious tiramisu! Hit this joint by pure chance on Mother's Day. Friends were visiting from out of town, so Yelp directed me to Cafe Baronne's and Stacks for brunch. Unfortunately, both places were packed; we decided to try Trellis because there was no wait. The empty downstairs dining area did not look promising, but the host led us upstairs to their outdoor seating area. The food was superb. How was this place NOT packed? The Susan's cheese appetizer was sooooo good, especially with their fresh bread. The eggs benedict rocked-- best I've had on crazy delish English muffin. The home fries? Crisped to perfection. My friend got the spinich omelette. Man, the food was good. It's a shame, my friends were in a hurry to catch a flight. The dessert looked tasty. Too bad Trellis isn't normally open for brunch. How can I get their eggs benny again? Must I wait until Mother's Day 2009?? read more

Ate at Trellis for the first time last night after having a couple drinks across the street at the BBC. My group saw it from across the street and decided to give it a try. We walked over and peered in the window at the place and we were promptly greeted by Curt and greatly encouraged to come in and give it a try. He seated us on their patio upstairs and two gentleman brought over heat lamps to kill the chill in the air. We had a fantastic meal, with a bottle of wine and an appetizer (5 people) and the total was $100. The food was very good and presented equally well. The wine list was good for our group looking for something reasonably priced. I had the gnocci and it was fantastic. Other meals at the table included Susan's Downfall, the penne pasta, and the spicy itallian sausage with pasta. The calamari to start was just okay, I'd probably order something different the next time. I will definitely return! Trellis would be good for a meal with friends, a business meeting, or even something more intimate. There are plenty of seats on the patio which is comfortable and makes great use of the good weather we have in the Bay Area. read more

I have been back with colleagues after 4 months since my first visit. The owner still remembered the lonely hungry and talkative Italian who sneaked in his restaurant a few months ago (= me) and our conversation (what a memory!): I felt home again :-) The soup of the day was with white beans: very good and not so heavy as you could expect it. I agree with T.D. We host an annual graduation and awards dinner at Trellis. Kurt and his staff are the greatest! They work with our budget to provide a fine meal, and they take great care of our group. I also eat there for lunch regularly, and Christine B is right, the portions are large, and the patio is nice on a sunny day. The service has always been excellent. read more
