We really wanted some dim sum while in the city and were pleasantly surprised to have some tasty meals without trying to get to Chinatown.... Since we just didn't have the time. Service was great. LOVED the green tea sesame balls despite their super green color! The pork noodle rolls were not the best... maybe a little over cooked. Delish modern Chinese dining in the heart of Midtown. Sichuan spice and Hong Kong style dim sum is hard to find! I loved the Peking Duck, Beef with Scallion, Stir-Fried Lobster with Ginger and Scallion, Dry Pot Sliced Beef, and the Crab and Pork Soup Dumplings. Joined some friends for a late lunch. What a nice surprise. The staff was so friendly and welcoming. Our friends had been there before and ordered a few things before we arrived Eggplant, green beans and a chicken dish. We ventured off the beaten path and ordered a bitter melon scallop soup, similar to an egg drop soup, but it had a nice little burst of flavor when you got to the finely diced melon. Shrimp & pork soup dumplings were really good. The glass noodles in beef were typical but hands down the whole Peking duck was the star of the meal.the meat was tender, moist, flavorful and the skin was perfectly crispy, not greasy. As a special treat we had a few packaged crackers and cookies and some amazing chrysanthemum and coconut jelly. It was a great way to end a really productive weekend in the city. read more

My husband and I attend a church nearby, and this evening we came here for dinner prior to a church concert. The staff were very nice, and the ambiance was warm and charming. The dry pot beef was really good and reminded me of the food that I got in China. The sautéed string beans were also on point.. some of the dim sum came out fresh and hot even though we ordered it for dinner. As someone who travels back-and-forth between China, Hong Kong, LA and Europe, this place is a good find. Our fist time here. We typically go downtown to China Town whenever we are on the mood for Chinese food. Tonight, we were not wanting to trek from our home in mid town to down town... We stumbled upon Tang Pavillion and glad we did. We ordered (not in picture set) wonton soup and fried pork dumpling to start. Both were freshly made and the dough was just right. Our main Peking Duck was really well prepared. The meat was moist. The skin was crispy and not overly cooked/burnt. The wraps for the Peking Duck are made from tapioca flour which makes it semisweet and a good chewy texture. The pork fried rice was perfectly cooked as well. Don't know if it was that it was freshly cooled or the ingredients, but the flavor and texture we also well balanced. We will be heading back (after they re-open)....they are closing starting Tomorrow for a 2 week refresh renovation. read more

I find Tang Pavillion's lunch specials to be very decent. They average $15 + tax. Their rice dishes come with choice of a Hot & Sour soup or a Spring Roll. They are swift and they take care of you with a friendly smile. I feel they are a solid choice for quick lunches if you are in their vicinity. read more

The restaurant renovated their place of business and the food has diminished. I've been dealing with this restaurant for over 20 yrs; they had the BEST Pepper Steak! I was SHOCKED to see they no longer offer it. REALLY; I've NEVER been to a Chinese restaurant that doesn't offer it. I used to recommend it to lots of people. Tang Pavillion has seen the last of me & will alert others of the tasteless bland food. SO SAD; they used to have really good tasty food. read more

The service is fantastic, the big round tables with lazy Susan are perfect for a large crowd, you can almost always get a reservation, and the food is delicious. Popped in for lunch on a rainy day mostly because we were tired of walking around and I have to say, one of the best decisions we made! The food was delicious, I recommend the spicy shredded beef it was crispy and just a tad spicy. The steamed pork dumplings were also delicious as was the General Tso's chicken. We split the entrees thinking we probably wouldn't finish it, but we finished everything! They have great lunch specials so will be back! This used to be my favorite restaurant in the area. It's now under new ownership, and it's a mess. --It takes almost half an hour to place an order for delivery because the guy taking the order can't get a four dish order straight. --Even after half an hour of ordering, the order is wrong. I order brown rice; I get white. I order a Coke; it's not in the delivery. I order very little fat; I get food swimming in it. I say add a ten dollar tip for the delivery guy; he shows up and asks why I didn't add a tip for him. --Some of the actual food is inedible. The beef in the beef and broccoli is tough like shoe leather; I threw it out. This place isn't what it used to be. I won't order from it or eat there again. read more

Excellent Shanghainese meal near MOMA. I came here with 2 other adults and 2 kids around lunchtime on a weekend and we were greeted and seated right away. In fact, service was excellent throughout. We ordered 3 dishes which were just right with no leftovers. The Drunk Chicken is a MUST! Typically served cold, the Shaoxing wine flavor of its brine really shined through for an extremely tasty chicken. Then the Shanghai-Style Noodles (customized with tofu) are ANOTHER MUST TRY! The texture and bite of these noods was so satisfying! Then their 8-Jewel Shrimp dish off of their Shanghai Specials menu was chock full of yummy shrimp, tofu, edamame, mushrooms, and more with well-balanced spice. I would order everything again! This is a hard review to write, because the food was tasty, the service was good, but during the meal a small mouse ran across the restaurant. It totally freaked out my daughter, who has lived in the city and made her question the cleanliness of the kitchen. Being a NYC visitor, I wasn't surprised since it is a big dirty city, with all sorts of critters in old walls, but I don't think I would go back, because it did make me question the cleanliness of the kitchen. I enjoyed the sesame oil coated jellyfish. It was the perfect appetizer for a hot day. It was very soft, plump, and juicy. The jellyfish was reminiscent of wood-ear mushrooms, but a bit more juicier. Overall, pretty solid restaurant with quick service. read more

Feasting in Warm Light Ever since I was introduced to the elegant setting and fine cuisine of the Tang Pavillion a decade ago, we have come to dinner on special occasions, sometimes with friends from afar such as Germany. We appreciate the authentic delicate flavor of Shanghai dishes that the restaurant specializes in. Last night when he accompanied me to the spacious dining room to mark the completion of my book project, we were greeted by the slender waiter Michael. In the warm light of the red lanterns, we feasted on our favorite dishes--jumbo shrimp with Chinese broccoli, green beans with tofu sheets and beef with asparagus. We had a pot of Pu Er tea served in a white porcelain teapot that resembled the smiling Buddha. Michael treated us to several appetizers--peanuts flavored with seaweeds, cucumber and seasoned turnip. I found the taste of crispy peanuts mixed with warm soft white rice pleasing. I discovered such pleasure in a Buddhist convent set in giant mountain rocks in Asia. Whether in times of peace or of fear, I am greeted by the scrolls of Chinese calligraphy that appoint the walls of the restaurant. An original writing by C.C. Wang is hung near the entrance as is a recent photo of John Travolta in a cap. I know I am in good company. When we walked into the clear evening air, we felt joy. We will return. read more

We ordered the scallion pancakes, shrimp Shanghai style noodle, and fish fillet with sweet and sour sauce. The scallion pancakes seemed deep fried instead of pan fried but still good. The noodle dish came with a decent number of shrimps. The fish fillet came with a few pineapple pieces which is what you see in "sweet and sour" dishes. Overall the dishes were standard Chinese American fusion which is what we expected. read more

The best Braised Pork Picnic shoulder in New York. There's no one even close. If one wants to have this dish in Hong Kong. The only restaurant to have this is a private club. The Shanghai club. It is a nice and large Chinese restaurant. Food was good. Beef was crispy. The server was not helpful or polite. He seemed annoyed when we asked him whether the restaurant offers lunch specials. We ordered a lot of food as we were a party of 8 and wanted the full experience. The dumplings and dim sum here were comparable to those you get at some of the more renowned places in the city. My only small criticism is of their soupy dumpling. While very tasty, i thought the knot holding it together was too doughy and the dumpling should have contained more soup. However, it was otherwise very good and fun to eat as well as to show my friends how it's done. We also order a few main courses and they are pretty excellent. The spicy shrimp was delicious. Generally good atmosphere (serene; which is rare in Manhattan), OK service (a bit impatient but generally OK), OK food (with Manhattan standard, their Chinese dishes really do not stand out); a tad bit pricey given the quality and quantity (tiny quantity to be honest). They provide free appetizers (pickled cucumber which is tasteless, and salty peanuts). Salt and pepper shrimps are good, as is the eggplant dish. read more
