I've heard so many great things about this place. So, I had to try. It's not too far away from work. I drove around 4 times. Finally found parking. Got in and waited for a bit to be seated. Had to asked the waiter in the middle of the restaurant. I got seated upstairs in the terrance. It was alittle nippy but ok. My son and I ordered the dumpling. This I must say was delicately moist and soft. Perfect combination of shirmp mixture and wonton wrap (green and regular). A chinese dish not thai. But oh so good. Served on top of a mixture of greens and soy dipping sauce. I ordered the special of the day. Fish something served on couscous and curry sauce. This sauce is thick and flavorful. Great with the fish. As for the couscous it was ok for me. I'd personally rather rice but its just me. My son ordered the curry chicken. That was also good too. On the smaller portion but good. Thai tea was alittle bland for my taste but ok. The desert was the topper. A red velvet cake that was so good I had to steal a bit from my son. lol. I ordered the bread pudding and I must say I've only had good bread pudding in New Orleans but their bread pudding is just as good as my experience in the creole town. Next time I will probably order dessert first and then my dinner. I think the portions are alittle small for the price but the dessert was perfect. Kudos to my waiter Patrick (I think)? W found this place via Yelp after we went through Terror Behind the Walls and wanted to get dinner somewhere within walking distance. We arrived without reservations and they said it was going to be a 5-10 minute wait even though the restaurant was empty for the most part. But we were in no rush so we just looked over the menu while we waited. The waitress came up to tell us the specials of the day, but honestly there was just too many specials so my eyes started to glaze over half way through. She was really nice though. Ended up sharing the salad kak and corn fritters. The salad was alright but I would definitely recommend getting the corn fritters! I think W ordered the green curry for and I got chicken pad thai. Pad thai was on the sweet side (but I also didn't add any of the lime to it) but it was very good and filling. Green curry was spicy so I only tried a little, but it didn't seem too bad if you're into coconut and spicy flavors. I think my favorite part was sitting out on the outside deck. They have pretty lights surrounding the deck and it's a very nice atmosphere to eat in. Unfortunately, we got a wonky table so every now and then our table would tip from side to side, and it's wooden so it was like being in boat that was gently rocking back and forth. Bottom line: I'm not rushing back for more. Good for large groups + it's a BYOB. I didn't hear any major complaints but, in a group of 20, I also didn't hear anyone proclaim, "man, that was an awesome meal" or "I love the decor". I feel self-conscious about giving this place two stars in light of some of the rave reviews on here. For me, the food and atmosphere were meh. We were there with a very large party (20), so it's great that they can accommodate big groups - and they did so graciously with a semi-private space upstairs. I don't think the restaurant is too concerned with the decor, but being greeted at the entryway with a refrigerated bakery case, lit up with florescent bulbs, empty except for a few tiny torts, sort of dampened things for me from the get-go. The staff was really nice, the menu is limited, but we all found something to get excited about. Alex and I shared the crispy beggars' pouches, crispy duck, and green curry. The pouches reminded me of fancy crab rangoons - only less greasy, and filled with a crab/shrimp mousse of a nice consistency. Really nice presentation, but I thought the accompaniment was too sweet. I have eaten a whole lot of duck in my life. When the bird is served in tact, sometimes the skin is oozing grease. When it is served shredded, sometimes the meat is overcooked and dry. This crispy duck was served on the bone - meat was moist and tasty; the skin was thin, crispy, and crunchy. Not fatty at all. However, the coconut brown rice over which it was served was entirely without flavor, and the bok choy lay limply, overcooked and watery. At $20, I was disappointed when the curry did not move the earth. I appreciated the fresh vegetables (eggplant was nice) and the presentation, but I can't remember one thing about the way it tasted. What other people ate: the beef salad was reportedly salty; the seafood hotpot featured fresh ingredients, which were promptly made to taste like soy sauce by an unnecessarily aggressive dousing; sweet corn fritters were decent; the drunken noodles didn't get any complaints. PS. They need more chocolate on the desert menu!! No one partook, but they offered bread pudding, pecan pie, vanilla tart with raspberries, and several others, all made on premises (including homemade vanilla ice cream). read more

Thai food is difficult in the city, you end up getting a lot of Chinese-Malaysian fusion places. Unfortunately Trio is about the same so don't come here expecting the most authentic Thai. It's tucked away on 26th and Brown - it took about 30 minutes to find parking at 8PM on a Wednesday so consider cabbing or walking. They sat us on the rooftop deck which was great for a cool summer evening. We originally had 6 in our party but one cancelled - because of that we weren't able to do the fixed menu (really? 5 instead of 6? that's lame Trio and you lose 1/2 a star) The food was good though. Appetizers were: Vegetable samosas (excellent would definitely recommend), seafood dumplings (eh, stick to chinatown for dumplings), Tom Yum soup (good). Entrees were vegetarian pad thai (good but had a little too much fish sauce flavoring in it), chicken drunken noodles (not spicy enough @ 3/5) , crispy tofu with ginger (good), Thai Basil chicken (good but nothing to write home about), and a special seafood medley. The medley entailed a lobster tail, scallops, calamari, on egg noodles with a seafood broth on top. Overall disappointing and lacking in flavor. I think I enjoyed the restaurant more so because of the company I had and the rooftop ambience. The food was good but nothing I would necessarily rave about. Trio is BYO, but unlike others takes credit card (except Discover). Also, FYI there's a bar almost catty corner to Trio that sells beer by the 6 pack for pretty cheap. read more

We went for restaurant week. I am not a huge seafood fan, but my boyfriend is, so we decided to give this place a try. We were there at 6PM on a Saturday and we were the only ones there till around 7PM. There were many people coming to pick up food, so I guess the take out is quite popular from there. I have the beggars pouches, which were very good. The boyfriend has the seafood rolls, and he really enjoyed them as well. For the meals, I had the softshell crabs, which were great! The boyfriend really liked them too. He couldn't decided between the Rad Naar or their other fish dish which came in a hot pot or something. He went with the Rad Naar and added the lobster to it. He was quite disappointed. It was a little bland, not much flavor. He wished he'd went with the other one. For dessert, he got the key lime pie. He said it was the best key lime pie he ever had! I had the creme brûlée and it was average, nothing special. Not sure if we would go back here, maybe for the appetizers and desserts. I would want to try some of the other dishes people mentioned on here. Might have to just have the take out then. read more

Oh just a delightful, little BYO. I have ordered both take-out and sat down and ate with my number one pal. Their pad thai is so so so freaking good. Their drunken noodles are bangin. Stay away from the papaya salad--it's overpriced for what it is. (The best papaya salad is at NAM PHUONG OMG NAM PHUONG I WANT IT RN) Desserts were yummy. Also their is lovely outdoor seating but I'm a little wuss and was too cold to sit out there. Overall, a smidge pricey, but it is fast, yummy and literally a block away from where I live. Great little gem in fairmount. I have been in the greater Philadelphia area for a long time now and just discovered Trio a few months ago. I have already been back 5 times; this should indicate my infatuation with this place. The food has been consistently delicious. They are pretty serious about their spices so be careful if you go to the upper portions of the spice scale. I would recommend the pad Thai, drunken noodles and the Thai samosas. I haven't veered away from these items because of how delicious they are. But I hope to go back another time and try the curries. Also once in a while they have the deviled eggs as specials and they are unbelievable. The ambiance is actually very nice and the staff is very helpful. They have a deck which I look forward to trying out in the summer time. The only problem with this place is Parking. You may have to circle a few times and park a couple blocks away. So a lot of times, I just end up double parking and doing take out. The quality of the takeout is just as good as the dine-in. I gave it 4 stars for now as I haven't tried their curries and I really think that the curries will make that push to five star read more

I was here with a group and we had a special group menu. I got the crab dumplings, the chicken and waffles, and pumpkin cheesecake. All of the food was delicious and was good sized portions. However the service was a bit lackluster. We live very close to Trio and have gone a few times now. We loved it. The food was really fresh and flavorful. I have had the drunken noodles and the pad thai along with a bunch of the appetizers. The corn fritter appetizer is so light and tasty. It's BYOB and that is always nice because it keeps the price down. The wait staff is really nice and it's so far been busy but not so much that you can't get a table. There have been a lot of big tables that we've seen too. I'm in no rush to return to Trio. The food was just okay. My meal was served cold and was missing some of the ingredients listed on the menu-my friend ordered the same dish and had everything- I didn't have the opportunity to ask for mine to be corrected because our server became busy and never returned to ask how we were or if we needed anything additional. We recently dined at Trio and it was very good! We had the Beggars's Pouches ( Amazing ! ) , Chicken Satay & Vegetable spring rolls - The sauces that came with each appetizer were so delicious as well! Appetizers were fantastic - we totally enjoyed them . Then we had Pineapple Fried rice with veggies and lemongrass meatballs - Oh My Gosh , so good ! The meatballs are so tasty! Our entrees were crab cakes and Grilled strip steak , very good - steak was a little small but tender and the Pinot Noir Demi - Glace was incredible ! Service was great , they took very good care of us . Just let the chef take his time and you will have a wonderful meal . Plus Trio is a BYOB , we enjoyed our wine and dinner so much . I just moved into the neighborhood and tried Trio as takeout for my first night here. Unfortunately as many other reviews state, I was underwhelmed by their takeout. The service was friendly and timely enough, but the food was only mediocre. I ordered the Tom Kha and the Beggars Pouches. This was the first time I ordered Thai, and the Tom Kha was not my personal favorite, which may factor in. However the soup was lukewarm by the time I got it home. The presentation of the pouches was cute and inventive even for takeout, but the taste was nothing to write home about. It seemed somewhat bland to me, especially for the reputation Thai food has when it comes to spices. Other reviewers have said Trio is a different restaurant when it comes to their dine-Im experience, so I will absolutely be back for another chance. read more

We chose this place because it was BYOB in walking distance and we've been on the hunt for a good Thai place. I got the duck, and the plum sauce was just about the most delicious thing that I've ever tasted. I even had to pull the oh-so-classy maneuver and scrape my plate with my spoon to make sure I didn't let any of it go to waste. The two of us try to venture to new places for date nights, but sometimes we can't resist the appeal of a reasonably priced yet delectable, always-leave-ya-wanting-more, meal. I love Trio. Me and my wife have been going here for almost 3 years. The atmosphere and service is wonderful. We've been there alone or with small to large groups. We like sitting out on there deck when the weather permits. My recommendations include the Thai Style Samosas, Drunken Noodles, and Crispy Tofu with Ginger. Also, My wife had a surprise birthday diner there for me this year. She reserved the third floor and had 30 family members and friends there. They were given three options for apps, entrees, and dessert on a limited menu. The food was fantastic and the service was great (even though they had to deal with a loud and obnoxious group). Trio is quickly becoming my boyfriend and I's favorite BYOB in Fairmount. The service was friendly and informative. Prices are fair for the fantastic food! My boyfriend had a seasonal red snapper special that was the perfect balance of tender and juicy but not sloppy. I've lived across the street from Trio for almost a year now, but I never went until just last night when I needed a close-by restaurant to take my visiting grandparents to. I chose Trio over someplace like Rembrandt's or London, just a few more blocks away, because it seemed quieter and a little more high-end. FIRST IMPRESSIONS: Inconspicuously tucked away on the corner of Brown and Taney St's, I think its location is a main reason this place is usually pretty empty, which is kind of a shame, something my grandfather commented on-- for a place so conveniently close by in the neighborhood, why aren't there more people going there? My guess is that it's not quite that crowd living around the restaurant-- you've got mostly late 20 y/o and then old Greek and Italian families that have been there for ages, not quite the Asian fusion crowd you might expect to find a bit deeper in the city. Either way, Trio probably doesn't have an easy time with that. Upon walking in the door, I was displeased with the smell of the place, it smelled like a sponge after washing a sinkload of dishes....luckily my nose was quick to habituate. THE FOOD/DRINKS: It's a BYOB, and I was fortunate enough that my Grandparents (likely on the suggestion of my Grandfather, who enjoys drinking it up with his younger kin) brought a nice bottle of red along, not even expecting that we would uncork it that night for dinner. I think Trio could really benefit and expand their business by acquiring a liquor license and installing a bar, I know I would be there a LOT for cocktails before going out, as the only other bar on the street is a dive bar called Krupa's, which isn't really my scene...however, Trio would be right up my alley if they served. The menu featured an enticing selection of Vietnamese and Thai-influenced dishes, I went with the Beggar's Pouches for my appetizer and the Seafood Hot Pot for my entree, while my Grandmother went with two appetizers-- the Chicken Satay and Corn Fritters, and my Grandfather had the Chicken Curry. The Beggar's Pouches are one of the most popular offerings at Trio, and they had a delightfully crunchy texture...although I think it was a little too sweet from the sauce, it was very tasty. By the time my entree came out I was already kind of full, but I did my best-- it was very good. I originally ordered it after thinking of Mongolian Hot Pot, one of my absolute favorite things from my trip to China in '06. While Trio's Hot Pot is nothing like Mongolian Hot Pot, it was still a lot of fun-- scallops, calamari and shrimp with glass noodles and various greens. The Chicken Curry was VERY spicy on the curry, but apparently you can ask them to go easy if that's not your bag. THE SERVICE: I thought our waittress was as attentive as she was friendly, and I think that even if the restaurant had been a little more full than on our Tuesday night visit, she still would have handled my Grandparents and I just as adeptly. Although she sort of stumbled through the specials, and I didn't really retain what they were when she got through them all, and she spilled our wine as she poured it, you could tell she wasn't doing it out of neglect for our comfort and she still did a great job of taking care of us. THE BOTTOM LINE: I think I need to come back here with a date or something, I'd like to see the main dining area upstairs. For me, it's conveniently located, for others, finding it, and then finding parking on top of that might be a hassle. Even still, Trio has some great food, and it totally worth checking out. I know that in this review I did a fair bit of complaining, but trust me, the overall experience was a very good one. read more

Trio serves fine Thai cuisine and is a staple of the Fairmount neighborhood. My wife and I get take-out from Trio about once a month and occasionally dine. Don't let the empty ground floor fool you. Ate here with significant other as part of its "Fright and a Bite" dinner menu before heading to Terror Behind the Walls haunted attraction. Food was all right, but didn't feel it was anything special. The wait staff seemed somewhat amateurish, not paying attention to who ordered what dish and didn't give us the correct menus when we arrived for the dinner package. I also had to flag over the waiter to actually place our order and they didn't ask if we wanted drinks beforehand. I had the salad with asian pear and walnuts - came with a strange creamy dressing that wasn't seasoned well. SO had the beggar's purses - 3 nicely sized and plump pkgs with a dipping sauce. The drunken noodles with shrimp entree I ordered was much better and had chunks of pumpkin in it - a good size portion. Boyfriend had the red curry with shrimp which was moderately spicy and came with overdone asparagus and rice molded in a ramekin shape. Nice presentation. Desserts were a hit (carrot cake slice and warm apple crisp with ice cream) but don't believe they are made onsite (with the exception of ice cream possibly). My clothes smelled overwhelmingly like grease when I left due to the open kitchen. I wouldn't come back - there are way better restaurants for asian cuisine in Philly. read more

The food here is always fantastic, I've dined in and gotten carry out and I've tried most of their stir fry style dishes and appetizers. It's always hot (in temperature, a big thing for me). They don't drown their dishes in sauce or seasoning and I love that they always bring you glasses if you byob. The ONLY thing is that the service is usually painfully slow, for no reason. It seems like the waitress forgets about you whether it's busy or not, this has happened twice where we wait over 20 minutes after being done eating for our check. read more
