We had been wanting to come here for a few years but aren't always the best at planning ahead. We celebrated our 25th anniversary this year and wanted to go somewhere new and romantic. Today was my third visit to Alpen Rose. My boyfriend and I really enjoyed our first visit! Food was good, service was great and the ambiance was amazing. We celebrated my birthday there and I was a bit shocked when they didn't offer to comp a dessert, since most steakhouses usually do, but I didn't mind as it's not expected. Our second visit didn't live up to our first time experience. The steak we ordered was so raw that it was inedible. Luckily, we got 2 big entrees so we were able to enjoy one and take the steak to go and cook it a bit more to enjoy for dinner the day after. This third visit REALLY threw us off. First, we waited over 30 minutes to be seated. When we were finally seated, we were seated in what is likely the most uncomfortable seat in the restaurant. You would think if you just made someone wait 30 minutes past their reservation, you'd maybe give them the bigger table that's available to get them back in your good graces. I will say most of the food was very good. We ordered the crab and artichoke appetizer which was good but not great, and for dinner we ordered the duck which was cooked perfectly and the ribeye which was also cooked well. I had mentioned it was my birthday at the beginning of the meal. Since I didn't receive anything with my last birthday experience, I had no expectations of a comped dessert. That was until the young lady at the table next to us received a comped baked Alaska for her birthday. When it was my turn for the waiter to offer a dessert we were asked if we wanted to order anything. We said no and asked for the check. When they brought us the check, they finally remembered we had been delayed half an hour and that's when they offered a comped dessert. Why is it that someone else got a free dessert for their birthday and not me? If you're going to offer that to one you should offer to all. Other than that, the service overall was very lacking. We were checked in on 3 times during the night whereas the table next to us received constant check ins. Not sure what that was about since we had the same waiter. We were also seated and ordered before the table next to us and they received everything before us. Appetizer, dinner, dessert and check. Not sure why this happened but after tonight's disappointing experience and overall food inconsistency I have decided not to dine here anymore. More for tonight's service than anything else. We were fortunate to get a call about a last-minute cancellation and decided to take the opportunity. The overall experience met expectations, and we left very satisfied. We ordered a wide range of dishes. The appetizers were all excellent, but the steaks were disappointing. They arrived undercooked and overly seasoned. The two New York strips we ordered also tasted noticeably different from each other, which was unexpected. Bone Marrow toast (so yummy), SALT BREAD (melted in my mouth), bone in ribeye (cut for us tableside), beef wellington (was told they are the only restaurant in philly to have it on their menu all year round), drinks (they sprayed some glitter on the one i got), mac and cheese, mashed potatoes (really good), rhubarb pie with ice cream on top, baked alaska (didnt burn for long enough the alcohol flavor was very strong). Cozy, speakeasy vibes, zero pretension, and service that makes you feel like you've been coming here for years. We started with the bread and bacon. BELIEVE THE HYPE! I attempted to make a reservation here about a month in advance for my boyfriend's birthday and I had no luck...I quickly learned that trying to get into Alpen Rose was possibly harder than getting into an Ivy League school, but I opted to be put on a waiting list and to receive notifications via "RESY" if any reservations were canceled and it was sort of like the universe had my back because we had the first snow storm of the season on my boyfriend's birthday and there were a few cancelations so I was able to secure a table at the exact time we hoped for!!! This is truly a VIP experience from start to finish. No signage outside of the restaurant ... you must ring a bell and tell whomever opens the sliding wood panel on the door your name and should you have a reservation you're let right in, and should you not have one, you're unfortunately turned away as the restaurant only has 12 tables and 4 bar seats, all of which require reservations. Service is top notch from the moment you walk in to the moment you walk out. And when you walk in you're blown away by the literal and figurative warmth of the restaurant as it's like you're transported back in time into what would be the perfect ambiance for a romantic dinner in a romance novel ... woodwork and chandeliers for days ... cozy plush leather seating ... fire burning grill in the kitchen ... literally the perfect ambiance! We ordered a few cocktails which were made to order and absolutely delicious! I went with the Number 30 and the Number 35 and recommend both. My boyfriend went with their Old Fashioned which he said was one of the best he's had. Bone Marrow Toast, Prawns and Hot Rolls were what we ordered for appetizers and the Dry Aged Strip and Dry Aged Ribeye with Creamed Spinach and the Potato Pancake Stack (that's not the real l name but can't remember what it was actually called lol) was what we ordered for entrees and can I just say that our tastebuds were honestly being seduced because this was some of the most special food we've had in a really long while ... like 5 star special! From start to finish the experience my wife and I had at Alpen Rose was exceptional. The service, attention and food quality was top notch! Definitely a special date spot. You have to find the Golden Single Rose on the front door, ring the doorbell and someone will open a small Speakeasy Door panel on the front door. You are seated almost immediately, RSVP required. The attention to service is superb. The food was delicious and flavorful. The vibe is so chill and cool. We were looking for a place to celebrate a special event and had seen Alpen Rose when dining outside at El Vez. So, we decided to try and snag a 5:00 pm reservation for a Monday. Sounds easy, right?! Well, the only reservation available for that day was at 8:30 pm. However, I set my Resy to alert me for an earlier option if something opened up. After a week or so, I got an alert for a 5:00 pm reservation and I immediately jumped on it. We arrived at 5:00 pm and rang the doorbell as instructed in other reviews. We were greeted immediately and then sat at a beautiful corner booth. We were so happy to have the extra space after seeing how quaint and cozy the restaurant is. Our waiter greeted us with a smile and charm. We ordered our drinks , which were labeled by number. One resembled an old fashioned and the other reminded me of something I would sip on while enjoying a lovely ocean breeze in the Caribbean. :) For food, we chose the Oysters Rockefeller (a first for us) for an app. Ribeye and NY strip with potato pave (another first) + asparagus for our entrees (and sides). We tried to go with as many "firsts" as we could since we were celebrating. The Oysters Rockefeller arrived, the dish consisted of 5 baked oysters that were nicely decorated with an even amount spinach and cheese that didn't over power the taste of the oyster. I also tasted a hint of lemon, which elevated the entire appetizer. I absolutely LOVED the it and so did my partner. Next our entrees arrived with the sides. My NY strip was massive (18 oz). I cut a piece of the potato pave and scooped some of the sour cream that was on the side. The potato pave reminded me of a Parmesan crusted potato dish with soft potato center that paired perfectly with the sour cream side. The asparagus contained grated Parmesan and it was absolutely divine. I couldn't get enough of everything on my plate. My partner raved about his ribeye and managed to finish the entire dish. We barely saved room for dessert, but felt we couldn't complete our full dining experience without dessert. So, we decided to try the upside down pineapple Alaskan cake for dessert. It was a rum cake with a pineapple compote and sherbet filling. I melted upon trying the first bite. The dessert was fluffy with nice tang from the sherbet that complimented the pineapple rum cake. We absolutely loved our celebratory dinner at Alpen Rose and would like to thank the restaurant and its staff for a fantastic dining experience. We decided to split the NY strip, but unfortunately it arrived cold by the time it was cut and served to us. The oysters still had sea water sitting in them, which really threw off the taste. The mac and cheese was surprisingly plain and lacked flavor. We stayed for dessert hoping to end on a high note and tried the chocolate cake, but it honestly tasted like something you'd pick up at a grocery store. Bone marrow toast is a must try! One of the best things I've eaten. The beef cheek on the toast is tender and so well seasoned. That on the toast itself is already amazing without the bone marrow. To me, the bone marrow wasn't even needed! Just the braised beef cheek on the extremely buttery toast was already an amazing dish. The cocktails were very good, we tried three. No 112 was the best tasting one! Light and refreshing. Service was great. Staff were all friendly. The dried aged porterhouse was cooked to exactly how we liked it. Loved that it was a little charred on the outside to give the steak a crust. The potato pavé is a must try- crisp on the outside, moist on the inside. Roasted Asparagus with the salsa verde sauce was perfect. When I say this deserved EVERY SINGLE STAR and more, I mean it. My husband surprised me with reservations for my 40th birthday. I was so excited because I know they're hard to come by and I had been stalking the Alpen Rose socials for years. Upon arriving at the restaurant, we rang the doorbell. A host peeked their head out and warmly greeted us before whisking us into the restaurant and to our seats. The ambience reminded me of my grandmothers home, with built in shelves housing a library of books, brick walls, and gold framed art on the walls. The lighting is cozy romantic. The vibes seem like theyd be pretentious but are instead comforting and warm like a hug from a long lost relative. We started with cocktails, a Hugo spritz for me and a smoked old fashioned for him. My drink wasn't prepared the way I traditionally have it, but it wasn't on the menu and it was still good, so I was pleased. We ordered the clover bread, which was a warm crusty clover shaped "loaf" bread served with a honey butter. It was equal parts sweet and savory. We followed this with the Caesar salad, which was simple but delicious with what seemed like a homemade Caesar dressing. The bone marrow toast was next, with succulent and flavorful beef cheeks over buttery golden toast. We spread the bone marrow on top for a melt in our mouth experience. We split the ribeye with the brussels sprouts and potato pave since we indulged so much beforehand, and planned for dessert. The ribeye was perfectly cooked and served with roasted garlic. The potato was exactly as I imagined it would be, somehow both crispy and soft. For dessert we went all the way and tried the pineapple upside down baked Alaska and the pie, which was an apple pie with browned butter crust. We both agreed we couldn't select a favorite. The baked Alaska had so many flavors and textures, with a chewy pineapple "crust", a cherry sorbet center, and the traditional meringue. Went here for our anniversary and it was great! The space is so cozy and we loved the library vibe. We ordered the tomato salad, shrimp cocktail and porterhouse rolls for apps and they were all delicious. For dinner (pic) we ordered the ribeye (cooked perfectly medium), the branzino (so herby and good), the asparagus and the Mac and cheese. We also ordered the mashed potatoes and were pretty disappointed. They tasted really starchy, didn't have a ton of flavor, and the texture was a bit loose. Everything else was really good. For drinks, I got a dirty martini and my boyfriend got a vodka gimlet on the rocks. For dessert we split the chocolate layered cake with ice cream and an espresso martini. Found this place from a social media profile I follow. What sold it for me was the library of books. I knew I was gonna be in town for a Library conference and I always treat myself to a fancy meal a couple times of year. This means dressing up a little, no ripped jeans, tank tops etc. I tried making a reservation via their online but it wouldn't let me for less than party of 2. Called and left a message and shortly after they opened I got a call and spoke to a lovely gentleman who said they had a seat at the bar at opening. Get there and you ring the bell and a window portion opens. Like a speakeasy. The place is fairly small, so I can see why reservations are hard to get. 8 booths and 4 tables and 6 bar seats. The bar was great as I get to watch the drinks being made. The menus are like old school library due date cards. Instead of patron name its the menu item and due date is the price. Started off with a non alcoholic drink which looked Ike the real thing and was refreshing. No98. Rose syrup, cranberry and sparkling soda. So good and refreshing I had two. Now this is not a place where you get and all in one meal. You pick an appetizer, main and sides and pay for them as priced. If you are a cheap person or date don't come here. I'd never had bone marrow nor beef cheek so started off with that. The beef cheek was shredded and served on a slice of sourdough and half bone shanks with toasted marrow. Server told me how to eat and scrapped the marrow and put on to toast. The beef cheek was so rich and combined with the marrow buttery. Next I opted for salmon (yes, I know its a steakhouse) but my hotel had a fridge but no microwave and I know i could eat all the salmon. For the sides I went for grilled asparagus and potatoes pave(layered in a loaf pan and baked) the salmon grilled to perfection and served with fresh made horseradish and a half grilled lemon. The asparagus was out of this world. Grilled with a nice tender crunch and topped with freshly shredded parmesean. Potato pave came with sour cream. This side wasn't my fav I will say. Now on to dessert. This, besides the decor is the other reason I wanted to eat here. Baked Alaska in the shape of a pineapple. Baked Alaska is making a comeback from the 80s. Im one of those fortunate to remember this as child attending fancy fundraisers. Its made with a cake base, pineapple and cherry sorbet topped with meringue carefully shaped to resemble the pineapple. Its brought to the table and rum in a vessel and set on fire and poured on to the meringue which "bakes" the meringue and the alcohol burns off. It was as I remembee remembered. Ended it off with a cappuccino martini. Staff is great. Not overly attentive, but pay attention when parts of meal are done. Checkin when needed. That alone is worth a good tip. Treat yourself here. FINALLY got the chance to try out the famous Alpen Rose and we were VERY pleased with our meal! My friends and I made our reservation about a month in advance so if you're looking to try this spot out be sure to make a reservation in advance! When we arrived our table wasn't ready yet so we were ushered through the back of the resturant through a secret door connecting to Double Knot where we had a drink while we were waiting. Their espresso martinis are lovely! We got seated about 10 minutes after in a corner booth. The ambience of Alpen rose is very upscale and sexy! They have beautiful adorned chandeliers and dark wood surrounding the dining room. The resturant is quite small which allows for a comforting feeling when dining here! My friend Liz ordered an old fashion which was presented with a fun presentation of smoke. My friend John ordered a zero proof cocktail which he enjoyed and I ordered a glass of red wine recommend by our lovely waitress Tessa! It was a perfect pairing with the steaks we went with! For our appetizers we decided to go with the heirloom tomato salad, beef tartare, clover rolls and oysters Rockefeller! The tomato salad was so fresh and served over stracciatella cheese. Beef tartare was to die for! Great flavor and one of the best I've had in the city by far. My fave apps were by far the beef tartare and the oysters Rockefeller! Because our table wasn't ready upon arrival the kitchen sent us a shrimp cocktail on the house which was so nice! The cocktail sauce was made with fresh horseradish and was delicious! For our entrees we decided to share two mains and some sides! We ordered the beef Wellington and the tomahawk steak. Both were phenomenal! Alpen Rose is such a cool experience. You have to ring a bell to be let in, and a random head popping out to check who you are feels like something out of a movie. Once you're inside, the space is small and beautiful. It's just 12 tables and four bar seats. It makes the whole thing feel really personal and special. My wife and I went for our anniversary, and they started us off with a small pour of sparkling rosé, which was a really nice touch. Every dish we had was amazing. I'm a big fan of beef Wellington, and not many places serve it. This one was done perfectly with a delicious sauce that pulled it all together. The drinks were also spot on, and the pineapple upside down Alaska for dessert was awesome. Everything from start to finish was impressive. This restaurant is amazing and if I could afford it more stars I would. We have been for a few celebrations now and have had the pleasure of being served by the same wait staff each time. She has always made us feel as if we were the most honored guests and provides beautiful suggestions to complement the experience. The food is amazing, everything I have had here exceeds expectations. The first entree we tried was the beef Wellington, sorry to Gordon Ramsey but, that was the best one I've ever had. Plus the portions are made to share so, not only is everything great quality, the service is top tier, the atmosphere is surreal and you feel like you get value for time and money spent. Excellent steakhouse with a speakeasy vibe. To enter, locate the little rose logo and ring the doorbell. The matradee will greet you through a little window and you'll be escorted into this less than 15 table, cozy establishment. Low lighting with the bookshelf as the main eye catcher, we were seated at an intimate table for 2. For our appetizers, we chose the carpaccio, bone marrow toast, and raw oysters. The carpaccio was great on their perfectly baked sourdough. Personally, a little different than what I'm use to with the sauce vierge. It had a tangy kick to it. This was a pretty savory dish. Next was the oysters (sourced from Jersey). These oysters were superb. Not a brine-y at all and pretty sweet. It paired well with their house sauces. We even went for a second round at the end of our meal. Cannot recommend these enough! And lastly, the bone marrow, recommended by our server was also a favorite. Melt in your mouth sensation on a savory slice of toast. Another definite recommendation. For our mains, we chose the filet and ribeye with a side of Brussels sprouts. Perfectly cooked and very flavorful. Paired with their Cabernet, each bite was excellent. I would say, the ribeye was a tad chewy, maybe we got a slightly fatty cut. And the filet was a tad gamey, but over we enjoyed our meal. The filet was seasoned perfectly too. Overall, Alpen Rose is a place for an intimate date. I really appreciate how it holds a special spot in the neighborhood, giving city goers a way to relax, escape, and enjoy a great experience with excellent service. The location is hidden other than a rose on the door and a doorbell. There is one awkward seating right by the door that we initially got sat at (loud + sun shines on you every time they open the door), but they were quick to move us when we asked to switch spots. Staff was very attentive and polite, and they wrote a hand written card in celebration as well handed with the bill which was sweet. Bone Marrow Toast - one of their highly recommended items that was definitely very good Beef Tartare was amazing! probably my favorite item I tried that was not expected Creamed spinach - nice and rich, enjoyable Tomahawk steak - nice large piece that is fun to get. It was a little tougher than I expected but still enjoyable Baked Alaska - great for celebrations or experience a little flair with the fire, not amazing but decent Ambiance is dark lit lighting with a library wall. The pictures on the wall and the nonmatching tableware (cups, plates, etc.) make it feel very homey. The entire experience was 15/10. The drinks are familiar, but different, and the menu we had was brand new. They went above and beyond to make me an off the menu gin drink which was perfect. Alpen Rose is an intimate restaurant with elements of drama. To celebrate my birthday, we arrived to an unassuming door with a rose and a bell. Upon ringing the bell, the hostess popped her head out of the window and asked for the name of our reservation (which is a must). Upon entering, we found an intimate dining area with a bar nestled in the corner, bookshelves in the background, and a view of the flames from the grill/kitchen (depending on where you sit). Our server Angelo was very attentive, personable, and gave great food and drink recommendations. We were recommended by friends to come try this restaurant and we're so glad we listened to them. Absolutely amazing! 1000000000000000/10 restaurant Before you enter the restaurant, you ring the doorbell and they slide a window and you tell them that you have a reservation. Oh making reservations is a must and apparently it's really hard to get one so plan ahead! There's many parking garages around the area that are like a minute walk to the restaurant. I recommend using the app SpotHero for parking. We started off waiting for our table to open up so we went to the bar and started out with Prosecco. Once we got seated, we also ordered the no.3 cocktail and red wine. No.3 is probably my absolute favorite cocktail I've ever had. For appetizers, we ordered the octopus and bone marrow toast. Both were delicious but that bone marrow toast is out of this world. I'm definitely coming back for that and ordering 2-3 of those. For sides, we ordered the potato pave and asparagus and both were amazing too. Main course: dry aged duck and dry aged porterhouse. Both of them were absolutely fire. Cooked to perfection. Came here for my wife's birthday so we had to get dessert as well so we ordered the pineapple baked Alaska and wow, amazing. They literally light that whole dessert up. Amazing experience. Service was awesome. The manager takes your jacket for them to store and they were all so attentive. Our server Lauren B. and the manager were so nice, provided us with amazing service.
