The service was great ironically when I came in the guy who took my payment already knew that I was the guy who called and ordered something and had it for me right away when I walked up. This is kind of what you would call a hole in the wall spot, is located inside of a building that has other places in it, and it was easy to find and you know it's good because they are the only place that had a line when I came into the building. Stopped by Trio for dinner with friends while we were in town for a conference, and I'm glad that we did! I was drawn to this spot because it's Black-owned and full of character--and it didn't disappoint. The space has a cool, local vibe that feels authentic and inviting. They also have local art hanging on all the walls, which customers can purchase if they like which adds to it's welcoming atmosphere. I'm not vegan, but I couldn't resist trying the mac and cheese since it's my favorite dish and I really enjoyed it! The owner himself was our server, and he was incredibly warm and welcoming. He took time to share the history of the restaurant, his aspirations, and his passion for its future, which made the experience even more special. He even took pictures with us before we left. The service was great, and my friends loved their food as well. I'd definitely return if I'm ever in the area. I'm definitely looking forward to coming back to explore more of the menu. What a unique place. The food was really enjoyable, and the passion the peeps who run this place have absolutely shows in the food. Friend and I both got burgers with Gouda and gf buns. We ate dinner here with a vegan friend and were overall pretty pleased with our experience. Trio serves a plant-based menu but does a really good job of making food that will appeal to meat eaters too. The space itself is small but bright and vibrant with super cool lime green chairs at the tables and lots of awesome art on the wall. The woman behind the counter greeted us and told us to scan the code on the table to view the menu and then come up to the counter. A little wonky but ok. I had the cheeseburger which was totally good. Slightly too much mayo on it (and this coming from me... I love mayo). And the fries were really good but not hot enough. My husband got the chicken sandwich, which he said tasted good but was absolutely drowning in sauce. My friend got the trio sampler and seemed to enjoy it. Fruit lemonade was a nice treat and honestly not as sweet as most lemonades (this is a good thing). Onion rings were AWESOME. My only real complaint is that the food came from the kitchen not all at the same time and kind of in whatever order it came. So all three of us got our food at different times, which made it slightly awkward. That said, there wasn't a huge wait for anything so minor complaint. I can't believe I have never eaten at this Vegan-soul food restaurant but I will definitely be back. So much food. So much deliciousness. The atmosphere and service are simple. Seat yourself, order at the counter. This does not detract from the experience. We started with cauliflower wings, which are available in several flavors. I was in the Twin Cities for a wedding and looking for somewhere to quickly pick up lunch, so I was very excited to see that Trio Plant Based was nearby. And, although it didn't seem like they had a ton of gluten-free options, it looked like I could order a burger, so I placed an online order. About ten minutes after I ordered, I received a call from the restaurant. They said they were out of gluten-free buns and asked if I wanted the burger on a regular bun instead. First of all, what kind of question is that? I obviously chose the gluten-free bun because I can't eat gluten. When I explained that to the employee on the phone, she seemed really surprised, but then said they could make it without the bun. As we already placed the order and were in a bit of a time crunch, I said that was fine. When I went to pick up the order, the woman who gave it to me was clearly the same woman I talked to on the phone, but there was no acknowledgement or apology that they were out of the gluten-free buns. She also didn't say anything about the $3 upcharge that I paid for the gluten-free bun--which is, by the way, ridiculous, because the burger was already $18. I figured it would still at least taste good, especially considered it's difficult to find food that is both vegan and gluten-free when I'm traveling. But, when I opened the container, what I found was a tiny Beyond Burger--half the size of the Beyond Burgers that you get at the grocery store, if not smaller--with some vegan cheese, shredded iceberg lettuce, two tiny slices of tomato, and a few pieces of onion on top. I thought there would be some kind of sauce on the burger, but there wasn't. I was hoping there would at least be local greens or tomatoes--something to justify the price of the burger--but it was just grocery store iceberg lettuce and tomatoes with no flavor. It was, needless to say, INCREDIBLY disappointing, especially for a total of $21 (including the upcharge for the gluten-free bun that I didn't receive). There were some fries on the side but they weren't crispy, didn't taste very good, and were way too salty. I just ate a few and then threw the rest away. I also got a side of their cheese sauce (another $3) because I love a housemade vegan cheese sauce and I thought it'd be good on the fries. It tasted sweet (which is never what I'm looking for in a vegan cheese sauce!) and not at all cheesy. I tasted it and then immediately threw it away. I always want to support vegan restaurants, but this experience was just awful. My dining companion got a falafel burger and he described it was a "black bean burger with some chickpeas in it" rather than actually tasting like falafel. I tried Trio at the Twin Cities Veg Fest this year, and it was delicious! I went to Veg Fest with a vegan friend of mine, and she said she really likes Trio as a plant-based spot. After taking in all the food options at the festival, she went with Trio. We had an order of the Walnut Meat tacos, and I was a little skeptical. I personally prefer something like this over a soy-meat-alternative, but I had never heard of walnuts being sued before. I was pleasantly surprised and absolutely loved the taco - in fact I even forgot to take a picture. It was a small street-taco tortilla with beans, lettuce, pico and a cream-alternative sauce with the walnuts. Great restaurants shouldn't set themselves up for bad reviews. Consideration (and proper preparation) is a requirement. I don't believe the owner has embedded this in his staff. For a restaurant that sells a lot of fried food and sandwiches, compostable containers should not be an option. It produces steam, making the food soggy before your first bite. If Trio doesn't want to remove the use of compostable containers, they should figure out an option to control the steam: place a piece of bread in the container to absorb the moisture, have containers with openings, the plastic bag shouldn't be tied up, place sauces on the side, etc.. There should be a solution to help your food ventilate. Otherwise you've spent $40 on food you do not like. It's not fair to the customer or the representation of the restaurant because I know Trio wasn't established to sell food with such messy outcome. There is a mother-daughter duo that works here. The mother, who typically wears glasses, has a nasty attitude. I noticed her attitude on the phone when I placed my order. When I got to the restaurant, I seen her giving the same attitude to another customer. One would think maybe she's having a rough day, but this isn't the first time I've experienced this with her. It's just who she is. It's very unfortunate to have this level of attitude around the food you are digesting and it just makes you feel unwanted. I really want to continue to support this black-owned restaurant. I'm from Los Angeles and every time I visit Minneapolis, I stop by here - but the thrill I once had is dimming. This is a super interesting place. First of all, I have to mention their music was seriously wonderful the entire visit, we were actually dancing in our seats and singing along the whole time. It's not the coziest ascetic, but it was clean. I love eating meatless now and again, and you don't often see or expect plant-based soul food so I had to go with the Soul Food platter. I got the House BBQ Jackfruit Riblets, Mac and Cheeze, and yams. I was a little thrown off by the BBQ "ribs". It wasn't a bad flavor, but it wasn't really what I was expecting texture wise. Last night my friend Jack and I decided to check this place out. We had wanted to go here back in October for her birthday, but ended up going somewhere closer to her. Last night we had gotten there about 730. The restaurant closes at 9pm. So we thought plenty of time. There is street parking so be prepared to pay for that. When we entered it had a very modern and chic look to it. Clean and crisp décor, I personally liked it. The space wasn't packed and we were seated right away. The waitress came over with the menus and informed us that they were out of Chikken and Burgers. That pretty much took away half the menu, if not more. Which was a major bummer. We moved forward. I really wanted to try the Mac and Cheese, but the one I was eyeing had Chikken in it, and the runner up had Burger in it. I had asked if I could get just the kids mac and cheese it looked plain enough and she noted that I could get a side of mac and cheese. So I went with that. We ordered the Nachos, Onion Rings, Side of Mac and Cheese, and Jack went with the sampler. She ordered The Ribs, Mac and Cheese, and Coleslaw. After she took her first few bites, she noted that the coleslaw was delicious and it was more of a creamy coleslaw instead of a vinegar coleslaw, which I understood and appreciated the description difference. She really liked the ribs and how they looked very 'meaty'. I will tell you the Mac and Cheese was AMAZING. I have had Vegan Mac and Cheese before and this definitely blew it out of the water. I know the next time we come I am gonna pray they still have Chikken or Burger so I can get one of the entrée mac and cheese options. We started to order dessert, Jack got the Vanilla Cake with Strawberry to go, and I was going to order the Cookies, but as I started saying that the waitress noted they were out of the cookies. The only issue I experienced (that was not communicated) was the woman working the front (as mentioned was working a lot) prepared a drink with mint, Sis did not use gloves. Keep in mind as a front worker, she was wiping tables. She was touching menus others had touched and she was touching payment methods others had touched. So that was a bit unnerving, also at one point she repositioned the recycle bin or trash bin and then wiped off a table and within moments and never washing her hands touched a plate to deliver to a table. I would just suggest, I know you busy and I know the moving swiftly it can be easy to forget but some people watch and it impacts their possibilities of returning. Oh and lastly cause I had no idea MN does this so to any travelers, there is a 20% service charge. I know some places can charge varying percentages. This place charges the 20%. I love soul food, and my roommate had not tried it before, so we decided to ball out and order the soul food platter with all six options as well as the BBQ jackfruit fries. The jackfruit bbq rib arrived at our table tough and very burnt on the bottom. The collard greens were SALTY! I felt a sudden Woah feeling upon sampling them. The cornbread was delicious. The macaroni and cheese was decent. The yams were puckery sweet. The jackfruit bbq wrap was burnt on the flat side... Overall the food experience was terrible. Definitely not worth a second try. I was really hoping for an award winning experience. It's so unfortunate that Trio showed up unprepared and lacking the quality and standard it states in posts. So I really enjoyed the rib! The Mac and cheese was pretty nice too. The small bit of maple butter that was on there tasted good. I was excited and wanted to love this place, but I am a bit disappointed. From what I can tell from reviews, they've really knocked down on portions. I thought I'd be having two ribs, a nice serving of Mac n cheese and some cornbread that isn't charred black a bit (not that i mind much but) has more maple butter on it, and isn't touching the barbecue sauce. Let's get straight to the point: The Nachos Supreme with sautéed chikken, oven roasted sweet potatoes, black beans, housemade Trio cheeze sauce, smashed avocado, tomatoes, black olives, corn, green onions, cilantro, fresh jalapeño and drizzled with housemade cashew sour cream for $13 Absolutely delicious! A MUST order! The sauces are so good, I'm so impressed by the sour cream and cheeze sauce. In a taste test against traditional dairy sauce, I don't think you'd be able to tell which is which. Actually - you maybe would because Trio's sauces are better. The only weird thing was our jalapeños were not spicy at all, which I don't mind because I'm not the biggest spice enthusiast but it was just disorienting haha. Other than the Nachos Supreme, I had the Smoky House Rib with BBQ Suace and some Strawberry Wisco-Pop! The rib was good but I probably wouldn't order it again, same with the Wisco-Pop!
