Some things just cannot be put on the back burner. This review is one of those things. I was lucky enough, by chance, to be in town when I heard about this new vegan restaurant's grand opening. I arrived @ 5:20pm on Sunday night, 30Sep, the first night of the grand opening event, and the place was packed! (Always a good sign.) The hostess was very pleasant and organized. She took my name and number, put me on the waitlist, and I received a text once my table was ready. I ordered the Soul Food Platter and picked BBQ "ribs," collard greens, sweet potatoes, and cornbread with maple butter. BAAAAABY! When I say the food was fire, I mean hella! COLLARD GREENS were seasoned so good it makes you wonder why people ever put meat in non-vegan versions. I didn't even need the obligatory hot sauce! I will say that there were too many stems, but I thoroughly enjoyed these greens, nonetheless. SWEET POTATOES that would make your granny proud. Sweet, cinnamony & nutmegy. They were perfect. CORNBREAD complete with pieces of corn inside. This is one of my favorite cornbread recipes. I'm ordering 2 or 3 next time! BBQ RIBS - they were good (but not like, OMG great), and so tender that you could cut them with a fork. They come from The Herbivorous Butcher. I may or may not order them again. Of course Tiggy had to order not one, but two desserts. PEACH COBBLER - Hunty! It was so good, I 'bout threw my fork. They don't have vegan ice cream yet, but an a la mode version would set it off. Delicious! I'm too full to try the Vanilla cake with strawberry sauce, so I'll report back on that in the photos. They had other things on the menu, but I was drawn to the southern and soul food options, and they did NOT disappoint. Southern food done right, and cruelty free to top it off!! I'd try this place again if I had to but I was not impressed when I ordered during COVID. I ordered and showed up well after the time frame they told me and I still had to wait at least 10 minutes. Literally no one else was waiting and their phone wasn't ringing. I already read the other reviews about poor service so I wasn't surprised, just disappointed. The mac and cheese was my favorite! Tasty and unique. The ribs were decent as was the cornbread, collard greens and cole slaw. The pie was not that great. My husband ordered a burger which was totally forgettable. They seem to be changing out staff quite a bit and I wish them all the best. You order at the counter and find a seat cafeteria style, but don't let that fool you. This place has a homey spirit that is just charming to the core. Local artists have their paintings on the wall for sale, staff greet you with a warmth that makes you feel like family... all around a cozy spot. And the food. Mm. This is vegan still food that knows its soul. Every time I eat here, the collards, the cornbread, the jackfruit bbq, the MAC... it all just reminds me so warmly of my grandma's kitchen... she was a neat eating farm girl raised in Kentucky, and this place gets that whole plate RIGHT while keeping it all vegan. COVID time review: called ahead for our order. They have both a walk up and pick up window. Unfortunately, our order was short due to a miscommunication, but they fixed it promptly and comped part of it. Due to volume, they have Plant-based burgers and fries only right now. What a cute restaurant with easy metered street parking! Let me begin by saying their cauliflower wings are so perfectly buffalo with a thin but crispy layer of breading. Must get!!! I got the chili cheeze fries, shared the taco fries and sampled the buffalo chikken mac and cheeze. The ground "meat" in both fries options is surprisingly good- has a meat-texture and absorbs the flavor of the dish! Between the two, the chili fries had a huge portion of both chili and fries while the taco fries had less fries and more topping (lay on that guacamole!). Neither dish was able to be finished because of how filling they were regardless. My husband is very much a meat-eater and this was his first vegan meal so the fact that he finished the buffalo chikken mac is impressive. He said the meat wasn't exactly like chicken but it did taste like meat and the cheeze was impressively gooey. He also had, not one but, two cauliflower wings voluntarily!! If you're going to eat at Trio.... please look at this review and please don't come hungry. I recently made the transition to a vegan lifestyle and was excited by the food that Trio presented. I especially the Soul Food platter. When my wife and I entered we were sat immediately. Great I'm like this is going to be an awesome experience! Little did I know that would be the highlight of my dinner. I should have also noticed that the people who sat before us seemed to be lethargic due to hunger as well. After sitting and waiting for about 30 mins our server who also doubled as the hostess came back to take our order. We ordered the buffalo cauliflower and the fiesta burger and the soups food platter. The souls food platter consisted of the Mac and cheese, Greens, Ribs cornbread. It should be noted that some people who sat after us had their order taken before ours which further upset us. 45-50 after we placed our order it finally came out. We order an appetizer yet received that with our meal. The food which I will review separate was actually really good but the service was terrible! Apparently water was at scarcity because we only received 1 glass our entire meal. Then, the poor people who sat after us but received their food first had issues as well. The poor girl couldn't even remember what she ordered cause it had been so long. I joked with my wife that maybe that was part of the plan make you so hungry that the food tastes even better than it would had you not had too much of an appetite. I wouldn't recommend this restaurant unless the service got better! Maybe they need more people or need to be better organized but it's clear they're slow. Food review: When we are the food was extremely good! The Mac and cheese tasted just like the version my grandma and wife make. It's hard to believe that it's vegan. The cornbread and maple butter were also delicious. Things I would order again. The greens to me were just ok. A tad to vinegary for me. The burger that my wife had tasted just like a beef patty and had that grilled flavor that most vegan burgers can't duplicate. And The rib tasted a little tough but definitely mimicked that of a real Rib. Lastly don't order the salad instead of fries. It's your typical bag salad... the reason I know is because of the plastic bag tie that came a crunch crouton addition(they should really check for that hazard.) OK we finally went back. The menu got a remodel and I loved it! The value of the cost to the food was much better. We loved the buffalo chick Mac n cheese and the burgers was fantastic. The only trouble we had was that the server really lacked on... everything. I don't think she's ever had a serving job before. She never checked on us after we got our food, we eventually had to flag her down to ask for more water and she never brought it. She was busy doing something on an iPad and talking to someone (friend?) at the counter and wasn't lying any attention to anyone dining. I actually even locked eyes with another diner and we both had the 'what the heck is going on?' look. I'm way more into the food now and want to go back, but I'll just have to hope a different server is working. read more

Stopped in to Trio for carry out on a road trip west with my partner. I looked at probably 20 places and this one stuck out as a Black-owned vegan soul food restaurant. So many options: exciting burgers, wraps, desserts, appetizers, and CHEESE FRIES (!), all vegan! I ordered the BBQ pit burger with regular fries and the Buffalo wrap with a side salad for carry out. It took maybe 30 minutes and they texted me when it was done. I picked up the order easily at a walk-up window and the kind people working there went above and beyond to help. On to the food: OH MY! The BBQ pit, which was my favorite kind of sandwich before going vegan (onion ring, bbq sauce, cheddar, sometimes bacon - you know the drill) was phenomenal. I fed my partner sloppy bites as we got on the highway towards Fargo, and she raved about it as I did. If I lived in Minneapolis, I'd come here very. very. often - just for this! The fries were crispy and tastier than I expected too - not your average fries. I thought the Buffalo wrap featured plant-based chicken, but it was actually cauliflower. This disappointed me a bit though I'm sure I misread the menu. The sauce was spicy and the side salad came already-dressed - so tasty!! The ranch is incredible too - among the best ranches I've tasted, vegan or not. Our total with a 20% tip was about $39. A splurge for our road trip, and so well worth it - I'm more than happy to support this business and hope it continues to thrive. Minneapolis has become a vegan paradise and Trio Plant-based is the latest place to arrive on the scene. The story behind the restaurant is emblematic of the progressive, multicultural history and fabric of the city (I'll let you look it up). This is a town at the forefront of civic activism, racial mixing and basic human decency. Oh, and it happens to make great food, too. I got the vegan soul combo ($15 for three dishes) and loved all of it---the mac and cheese is creamy and rich, the cornbread delectable and warming, and the BBQ seitan hearty. I normally hate BBQ anything, but here the sauce wasn't heavy or sweet or too thick; it served as a nice accompaniment to what (I think) was Herbivorous Butcher seitan. The grilled vegan ham and cheese ($11) tasted great, with house-made pistachio cheese. The cheese didn't taste like pistachio to me, but it was gooey and uncannily reminiscent of Kraft cheese, albeit less oily. I think the bread could have been more substantial (it appeared to just be Dave's Killer Bread), but it all came together on a whole. I look forward to coming back when Trio has a larger menu---I'd love to see cheesecake and breakfast sandwiches. As it stands, Trio is a great spot and is about more than just food. read more

I'm obsessed!! I arrived at 5:10pm on a Friday and placed a fairly large to-go order and it was ready and packaged up in only 10 minutes! The grilled cheese and grilled ham & cheese were delicious - simple but flavorful and reminiscent of my childhood in the best way possible. The tomato soup - TO DIE FOR! So creamy and wonderful and comforting. We also ordered the soul food platter with sweet potatoes, cornbread, and mac & cheese. The cornbread and sweet potatoes were so sweet they almost tasted like a pie when mixed together which is exactly how I like it. The mac & cheese was a little too mustard-based for my liking but still good. I applaud them for having compostable to-go packaging - even including the plastic bag! We didn't have to worry about trying to adjust the menu. We started with the supreme nachos - sautéed "chikken", oven roasted sweet potatoes, & black beans, with tons of other good stuff loaded on. They were SO good. Got entrees we both got the soul food platters. You get to choose what you want. The cornbread was literally the best thing I've ever eaten !!!! I ordered a 6-piece soul food platter for pickup. I arrived at the stated pickup time, and learned that the greens had run out. I opted for a 5-piece platter, and waited for another 30 minutes before the food was finally ready. When I opened the platter afterwards, I noticed the Southern slaw was missing, so I had been charged for an item I never received. The ribs were great, the Mac and cheese was okay, the yams were WAY too sweet (now I know they're not my thing I guess), and the cornbread was nice also way too sweet IMO. Overall a mediocre experience considering the 30 minutes spent waiting and the missing item. I'm not sure I'd recommend this restaurant, unless you're dead set on vegan soul food. read more

I'm not vegan or even vegetarian, but I love trying plant based foods and eating plant based when I can and I really love supporting new restaurants. A friend and I split the cheeseburger, ribs, and Mac and cheese. I was most impressed with the ribs and how it tasted even better than regular ribs. It has a great meat like texture that satisfies meat eaters, but not desperately trying to be meat so much that it would be off-putting to strict vegans. It tastes exactly like what it is. The burger and Mac was delicious too. I loved the general feel of the restaurant and the decor. The staff was all so kind, welcoming, and informative about everything. I'm neither a vegatarian nor a vegan so my review may not be the best but I think this place has done a good job with their food. We ordered a hamz and grilled cheese and a BBQ ribs with sweet potatoes and collar green. I thought the grilled cheese was pretty good. The plant based ham definitely didnt taste like ham but they tasted pretty good in a different way. The cheese is exceptional; even though it's vegan cheese, it still had that fatness that you would taste in normal cheese. The collar green and the sweet potatoes were generally good, however, the BBQ ribs were a bit off. I thought the BBQ sauce was a tad too sweet and the texture was a bit off. It was generally good but I wouldnt order it again. Also, this place is super affordable and we were so happy when we saw our check! The waitress also draw a cute chicken on our check! First time eating at this awesome vegan restaurant that seems to focus on vegan comfort foods and it was all delicious. We were a group of eight hungry people so altogether we tried most of the menu. Service was kind and welcoming. Most impressive, to me, was that one of the owners (get this!?) created a new menu item because my wife has so many food allergies. BEWARE: they charge an unadvertised 20% service fee. You pay on a handheld device so can't see why the bill is what it is and then it asks for tip so I gave the standard 20%. Only when I got a printed receipt (because I asked for one) did we then discover the service fee on top of the tip. The employees couldn't explain it and the manager refused to come out from the kitchen or re-run my bill without the double tip added. The food was good but what they do is sketchy. They are not upfront about the fee or letting you see your bill before you pay and it is unacceptable they wouldn't remedy it. read more

Really really great vegan comfort food. I ordered the mac & cheeze and the cauliflower wings and they were both SO good. I'd definitely order both again. Wait times here are extremely long though, so if you're going to get food from here you better order ahead and order EARLY. We had to wait almost two hours for our food, but I will admit it was worth it as I really support this business, the food was great, and the staff is so so friendly. Just checked this place out for takeout (during Covid-19) and I couldn't be more pleased. We went with the Soul Food Platter and chose the Mac and Cheeze, Collards, Cornbread with Maple "butter", and BBQ Jackfruit "ribs." So, I just moved here after living in NC for 5 years, and I can honestly say that I have not had a plate of vegan BBQ at all, let alone one that is this amazing. Who would have thought my first BBQ plate would be in Minnesota?! My SO (former meat eater, from the South) said that he felt like he was eating a BBQ plate at a picnic. The pricing/portion size was perfect. It was just enough for both me and my SO to share for lunch; we barely had room left for the delicious giant chocolate chip cookie we ordered for dessert. The texture of the BBQ jackfruit was awesome...I couldn't even tell it was jackfruit. My favorite was by far the cornbread though. The crumbly texture was perfect and I loved how the sweetness complimented the rest of the flavors on the platter. They helped me select what I should have by recommendations. The beyond burger was so good and the pretzel bun was unreal! The soul bowl wasn't my favorite but I think it's just not my taste. Was in town for a few hours and had plans to grab lunch with an Omni friend. She told me she had visited Trio before so we went. My friend ordered the Mac Attack burger and I got the For Your Soul Bowl with dragonfruit riblets. To me, dragonfruit is hit or miss. This dragonfruit was a hit. It was dense, chewy and flavorful. My wife ordered birthday dinner for vegan friend. She got takeout and realized when we got home that they had not included the soul food platter. Called the restaurant to alert them and they said we could come back and pick it up later that evening. When we did they responded that they had thrown it away and weren't going to remake it.
