this is a bad place for people who like cool toys. i've been following this place since their oakland days and their quality and workmanship can't be beat. they continually introduce refinements to their homegrown products that put comparative products to shame. the best part is that the designs are actually a result of use/abuse/comments, which make their outerwear/bags/etc more useful than most other brands. they sell alot of outdoors-y stuff, but marketed towards the more extreme folks. their tactical gear is suited for military/law enforcement, but can be equally useful for civilians interested in quality and functionality. their stuff seems pricey, but if you actually compare the quality and features to the other 'big name' products, you'll find that the prices are equal or lower to the rest. staff is friendly and helpful, not to mention knowledgable and are the models on the website. lol. read more

Incredible quality outdoor gear. I have worn and thoroughly abused several of their jackets and packs for many years. They are the best, but price out the rest. They lose two stars for decreasing quality of customer service as they've become more successful and expanded. No pack replacement parts are available what-so-ever. I find this totally unacceptable. You'd be surprised how virtually impossible it is to replace one of their sternum straps... even using generic parts. Their staff is still really helpful otherwise. But personality only goes so far if you can't deliver. A company so devoted to excellence in product needs to be equally devoted to service and support as well. read more

i picked up a knife here back in 1999 I think, either that or early 2000....triple aught was run out of what looked like a live/work warehouse in oakland back then. then they moved in to a store in oakland...now they are in this neat space in sf. i'm glad to see them moving up. i've bought a couple knives here and picked up a surefire flashlight today. they are an authorized dealer. they were one of the few places that had microtech automatic knives back in the day when microtech was making more knives. they have great gadgets and a good selection of knives. service was friendly and helpful. one can spend a long time here looking at their schtuffffff. read more

Poor customer service!!! I am an international customer of them and not sure what happened my parcel was delivered in a USA address and there is no following up why this occurred. This is not the first time happened like this, the delivery always delays. Triple Aught Design needs work on their shipment. What I got they just simply asked me whether I want my parcel to resend or refund. No apology for this and sounds like they don't care their customers. Pricey, but I have been searching more than three years for a water-proof, bike-friendly jacket that I am not embarrassed to wear at the office. 000 solved the problem (finally!), so I was willing to shell out the extra ducats. Triple Aught Design is still a good company, but their business practice remains subpar. If you look at their web site you will find that a multitude of items are "out of stock". I'm guessing this is due to either poor management or they think it makes there items more valuable. Today, i get an email for a new item they are selling. It's a watch BAND. Yes, It's a cool watch band and I would pay an over the top price for it because i like that sort of stuff. But the watch BAND is $275. Come on, for a watch band. This is plain stupid. You can buy, (and I have) a high end smart watch for just a little be more. I think this company has lost their way and they may be circling the drain. But I don't know that as fact. It's too bad they spend more time trying to be these tactical want-to be's and less time keeping items in stock. I guess in some off beat, San Francisco way, it works for them. read more

Love this place, There stuff is expensive but 100% worth it, I've had one of there jackets for 5 or 6 years.put it through hell, still going strong, Love all the little well thought out details. I'd been using one of there backpacks for a long time and didn't notice it had secret pockets in it. I used it to sneak wiskey onto a cruise ship. It is a place where the urban warrior athlete or outdoors-man can get their clothing and gear fix. The clothing line is balanced between the outdoor feel and tactical feel. I love design, but I am not big on de$igner fashion. When the cool kids on the street are rocking Bathing Ape, Ice Cream, and Lucky Brand (Jeans), I rather go with something a bit more affordable / functional like Levis or North Face - that is until I discovered TAD Gear. TAD Gear, technically is not a "fashion brand", but the design and the quality of their urban and outdoor gears are so above and beyond one should consider it as a designer brand. Did I mention the price tags are "designer pricey" too? Anyway, TAD Gear is definitely a "designer brand" in the tactical arena.... Wait. You said tactical as in SWAT, Special Force, PMC? Yes, but you are not going to look like John Rambo with TAD Gear's Stealth Jacket. Their design is more in line with the North Face, Patagonia type of outdoor clothing but with really amazing quality in tailor, materials, details, and design. The attention to details and general high quality of their products has caused a lot of people in the "macho business" (Private Military Contractors, Law Enforcement, and the Military) to take note and start buying. In fact, if you go to their Web site, the first thing you see on the site are customers' pictures wearing TAD gears that are usually heavily armed. :) Their current Web site is pretty Web 1.0, but I think eventually they will get it right. If you are in the Bay Area, you should check out their retail store too. To me, the place is like a designer boutique with amazing jackets, backpacks, pouches, and all the stuff you want to look tactical and macho - everyday. Love the gear, but when something goes run customer service is there to make sure I never buy another piece of equipment. I bought a pair of jeans for over $200 and it had a few errant threads, and sent it in to have them take care of it. I received it back 4 weeks later with an giant patch sewn in not only ruining the look but also making it rough against my thighs. I sent it back again and this time they take the patch out and leave the sewing marks and threads and totally ruin the look and feel of the pants, at which point they called it a day. Repair department is the most incompetent shop ever. Buyer beware. read more

All I can say is they are the best outfit I have ever dealt with. The previous reviewer's post is out of line, IMHO, less than 17% of all companies who experience a breach actually report it. They not only reported it but have gone above and beyond the norm as far as communicating they were breached. They, like so many in the virtual landscape, are susceptible to the myriad of minefields that are placed in their path by less than honorables. They followed the law and shut the site down as soon as they were aware of definitive proof by the FBI they had in fact been breached. For all they know the individual calling was the hacker...my point is that they went above and beyond!!! I've ordered a lot of gear from Triple Aught Design in the past and have never encountered a problem until now. I ordered four $110 gadgets as Christmas gifts for friends. I had ordered the same type of item from them before and each came individually packaged. When my order arrived, I found that they had stuffed two into each package, leaving me with the packaging for two, and two loose items. I sent a message to their support asking if I could please have two more cards and bags since all four gifts are intended for EDC junkies that are TAD gear collectors. I received a response back stating "The packaging that your items were shipped in is standard practice for our warehouse in order to maximize efficiency, but still maintain product integrity. With that said, we would not be able to provide additional warehouse materials on a per customer request basis." - I know that if I had ordered the items separately, they would have come in their own packaging. I've ordered their gadgets before and they ALWAYS came individually packaged. They offer free shipping on orders over $99 - so I figured that with the money I saved them on shipping, the least they could do is send me the proper packaging so that my collector friends could get the whole "experience" of a $110 piece of titanium. Considering that I've spent thousands of dollars there, I feel insulted and degraded. I asked as nicely as possible, and rather than spend a couple of dollars to right a wrong and make my Christmas right, they'd rather cheese out and hold back on a couple pieces of cardboard and two plastic bags. Honestly, they're overpriced and if it weren't for my friends' enthusiasm about their products, I probably wouldn't shop there at all. I've worked in online retail in the past and that's just bad customer service. In the amount of time it took for them to write that response, they could have just pulled out two cardboard backers and bags from their giant pile, printed a shipping label, and had them on their way to me. Instead they chose to save a minuscule amount of money at the cost of what would have been a returning customer. Next time I need overpriced gifts, I'll shop at the mall. Bah humbug. read more

TAD Gear epitomizes the "Man gear" shop concept, though plenty of my female friends appreciate the unexpected, cool gear hanging throughout the place. You'll find: survival gear, functional equipment, enough LED flashlights to ensure you can find your way out of a land-borne black hole, backpacks with plentiful pockets and load compression straps to make any tactical equipment connoisseur drool, custom knives and other edged tools that even MacGyver would consider overkill and unique designs that mix urban stealth fashion with de rigeur tactical features. They listen to reviews and suggestions about their designs and use top quality materials in their clothing and gear. Much of the textiles they offer are made in China from what I can tell, but the manufacturing is top quality rather than some of the cheapo quality that can exist out there. I'd rather pay for the functionality and materials behind a well-designed piece any day over a North Face or other more fashionably well-known technical brand (e.g. Marmot, Mountain Hardwear, Patagonia, etc.). These are good companies, but I see the intrinsic value in TAD Gear's designs that don't need to appear in magazine ads or gear reviews other than their hope to be evaluated by tactical professionals who would use their gear in real world settings. Their customer service is really good and they try hard. I'm docking one star only because I think they need to barcode their items so that retail sales occur more fluidly. (It's a problem that can be solved by existing technology.) They also seem to be understaffed, though I have heard that they are rectifying that to deal with their strong sales growth. Great place to drop by before your next adventure expedition whether it be Yosemite, some unknown desert, or Everest. The gear just makes you smile. read more

On 6 November I purchased a hoodie from TADgear.com. The hoodie was received on 11 November. Cost was a little high, but the quality of the hoodie upon receipt was TOP NOTCH. Worth every penny. The overall experience however was extremely sub par. On November 10 I noticed a series of transactions on my credit card that were fraudulent. These transactions started on 7 November. I did some investigation into usage and all transaction in the 5 days leading up to November 6th and including the 6th and 7th were at terminal brick and mortar business (gas, grocery, fast food etc.) I did some investigating and was able to get the email address and IM profile of one of the persons who attempted to use my card and contacted them. They are a 15 year old male in Cairo Egypt who claims to have gotten the card number including physical address from a friend who with another person in the US "...hacks sites for card data..." This would seem to corroborate my estimation that the card was compromised on line. I provided this data to TAD Gear and was called by a CSR who shared with me that I was not the only person who had complained of a card being compromised in that time frame. I provided them the info I had and asked for a response. They replied that their site was hosted using SSL etc. I did some poking around of my own and withing 10 minutes was able to locate multiple pages that had SSL cert errors due to images being served up from some type of content management system that was outside of the secure environment. I provided this information to TAD and asked for a response (mind you, I have asked for nothing except for them to fix the error so some troop down range with limited resources doesn't get their info compromised) and have as of today (Nov 19th) received no reply even after several attempts at following up. I WOULD purchase TAD Gear products again, but I would be very hesitant to purchase gear from a site that I am 99% certain was compromised and failed to close the loop from a customer service stand point. Gear that lasts, and is designed for practical use, Most are Made in the USA. If I remember correctly. yes it's a little cultish, but it's good quality gear. I've purchased the Stealth Hoodie for my lady friend a few years ago and looks like new and for myself the SAS Merino Wool Sweater and Beanine.. quality products, warm and durable, just as good if not better than my old original Scottish Paratrooper sweater traded for during a training excersice years ago. (damn thing shrunk) or I got bigger? 2 Years ago I purchased the Ranger Hoodie, I challenge you to fine a better Fleece than this. Yup you are going to fork some cash over, but good gear costs! Having personal winter and summer mountaineering experience as a Paratrooper and part of a test team for bringing civilian gear to the Army. I can attest this is not North Face, or REI, type stuff even though they are both pretty good companies, this is a step above. Stealth Hoodie LT UE gray. purchased 3 months ago , and already their flagship product has failed spectacularly. the main front zipper has literally fallen apart in 4 different places. the little pips just started falling off into my hands. i wore this every day to the shop , walking the dog etc, so without even putting it to the test in the wild , it seems it cant hold up to the riggers of light everyday wear considering the Italian made RiRi water resistant zippers chosen for their durability and ease of use , as described on their site. and yes im shocked that an item costing 475 dollars plus shipping is now unwearable after 3 months of light use. the reason i spent such an incredibly large sum on 1 jacket was to avoid any issues/faults returns you expect when purchasing cheaper items online. ever heard the phrase--buy cheap , buy twice. well apparently not but its okay , i just need to spend ANOTHER 85 dollars on shipping to get it fixed. so thats now 185 dollars on shipping alone including the original delivery charges. why should i have to pay such extra exorbitant charges for their obvious failures in either workmanship or materials.that occured in only 12 weeks. this item has now cost me 565 dollars . everyone else pays 475 dollars. so yes i feel discriminated against as im the only one that has to pay more for the same product due to no fault of my own. if any one else has experienced the same catastrophic malfunction on their TAD garment please make everyone aware . beware the company who ignores basic ergonomics when it comes to pants. the covert and spartan have very low rise, (crotch space) so low that you are either crushing your testes or displaying way too much arse crack(otherwise known as builders bum) . these pants sit just below you hips and the fabric have zero stretch capabilities . the rise is literally the only thing you need to consider for a pant to comfortably fit. i now own 3 pairs that i cant even wear due to the fact that they in no way conform to the simple ergonomics of the adult male. something the minoan civilisation had mastered over 2000 years ago without the help of cad/graphic computer aided design yet tad fails miserably at such a simple concept. if these pant werent 110 dollars each i wouldnt mind as much. the one star rating also reflects their spartan and covert pants , tradecraft shirt and graphic tee shirt and inconsistency on their own sizing on their own website. a thousand dollars spent in one transaction and i would return all of it if i could and move over to arctery leaf read more

Pay attention to the POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE comment bacause that is the truth. I ordered ranger jacket 2 months ago, for 220usd , after one week price was changed to 200usd. Product came to me after about 2-3 weeks (I am an expatriate working in the Middle East), I oppened the box and was surprised to find a rouge jacket instead of ranger jacket. Now they offered exchanged but I said I cannot do it because parcel will be costly considering my location, so I just ask to refund the 50usd difference OR (knowing it will be hussle since they dont do paypal payment) they can just send me a 50 freakin' usd worth of stuff that I dont really needed. After another one week of waiting for a reply finally, they said: they already processed the refund. I came to the bank today (after almost a month) and remembered to check on any refund made to my account and nope, there was none. After 3 months of feeling sorry looking at a jacket I did not want, no apologies for the mistake, no refund, no nothing. This is not the only TAD gear I have, I came back for their well made products, however this will be my last. read more

Recently ordered a Specter46L pack. Had problems fitting called customer service for assistance. Got instructions on how to return. No instructions on set up, no advise just instructions on how to return. Now have returned it and am being accused of having used it before return(did adjust shoulder harness for my height and wore it briefly in my living room). all things you would do trying a pack. And there rep was in no way interested in any criticism of pack(ie tiny zipper pulls). No tech tips. Ok .Return. Bye. Disappointing and insulting. Never encountered this before. If They refuse refund I will be instructing them to donate pack to local boy scout troop in hopes in gives a kid a pack. In 40years plus of backpacking and climbing (20 years US Army) I have never had a problem with an outdoor/tactical store like this. Maybe a cancellation or out of stock. This store is absurd. Always on the lookout for decent gear, I checked out the Hayes Valley store a couple of weeks ago. For the most part, the stuff is good quality and well thought-out, though it is ridiculously overpriced. My greatest objection, however, is the idea of trendy, Gucci-priced tactical gear, marketed to be worn by urban hipsters or weekend recreationists spending the afternoon at Point Reyes, undoubtedly convinced that they are super awesome because they are sporting the latest "tactical" accessories. No doubt they thought the Ralph Fiennes character looked cool in "The Hurt Locker" and they want to look just like him, what with that sexy little desert scarf and tactical trousers. Maybe they want folks to think that they are Special Forces operatives out on the town while on a little R&R after a tour of duty in the Korengal Valley. Please. Such posers. You know, if you join the Army or the Marine Corps, they'll give you all of this stuff for free. Then you'll actually need it. Until then, all the soldier/marine wannabees should stop pretending to be bad asses. Leave it up to the people who actually are. read more
