There's also a great view outside on the veranda of a beautiful lake. Glad we stayed inside that night. Not only was it super hot outside but it poured during dinner and we stayed nice and dry. Located in the basement level of 90 Main St in Narrowsburg, it arguably has some of the best views of the Big Eddy and Delaware River of any spot in Narrowsburg. When the weather is nice, an outdoor deck offers commanding views. Inside, the decor is a bit industrial with a nod to the Alsacian mountains. The space is all hard surfaces, primarily concrete, making it a very bright room from a sound standpoint. For this meal we sat that the bar by choice. Service was reasonably prompt and friendly. No specials were mentioned, and no substitutions or menu changes. I ordered the Pork schnitzel, my dining companion one of the spaetzle dishes. We started with tuna tartare. The tuna came out in a nice presentation which included an extra heavy "schmear" of avocado on top. The dish overall was so incredibly oversalted that it bordered on being unpleasant. The house made tortilla chips which were light and delicate, but again, so over salted they were bordering on inedible. The schnitzel came out and had been pounded out absolutely paper thin, and the breading was very dark brown. The side salad was mixed field greens instead of the stated arugula on the menu (no mention of a substitution). The Schnitzel was overcooked and, frankly, as dry as cardboard. Seemed like they are using a smaller pork portion and pounding it super thin to make it fit the plate to their spec. It also wasn't seasoned. At all. My dining companion's spaetzle was over cooked and mushy - almost disintegrating in the mouth. It's unfortunate because that dish looked incredibly promising on the menu. We added the asparagus appetizer (an odd appetizer offering, and not offered as a side dish), and it was good, cooked well, but again no seasoning. I added the leek mashed potatoes as my side. Again the theme of little to no seasoning raised it's head. The potatoes were cooked well, and the leek came through quite delicately, so it's unfortunate the kitchen didn't follow through. Overall - a lovely setting with fantastic views, and a great place for a glass of wine or a cocktail watching the sun set over the Delaware River. As a dinner destination, our latest experience is unfortunately consistent with past visits - a menu that promises great, somewhat simple dishes that fall flat on execution.

[I didn't ask her for the story, but when I asked about the Vivian Gray Lotus and Rose soap in the bathroom, she said she had bought like a case of the German soap when she saw it on sale. (I'm super jealous because the soap is absolutely divine smelling - and rose is one of my favorite scents.)] Hubby started out with the French onion soup. He was in love. The good thing was I didn't taste any alcohol in it (which is good because not only are we teetotalers, but we can't cook with alcohol, either), but I thought the broth was fairly one dimensional, not too far above just bouillon. The onions were not sufficiently caramelized, either, in my opinion. (I make good French onion soup - and so I expect a chef's version of it to be better than mine.) Hubby liked that the cheese was wrapped around the piece of baguette floating on top. He then had the [Norwegian?] salmon on a bagel, which had quite a few capers on top. Again, he was in love - salmon, bagel, cream cheese, what's not to? I, too, thought it was a wonderful dish. I had ratatouille, which contained kalamatas. I've never heard of olives in ratatouille, but it was quite delicious as well, albeit a bit oily. The presentation was very nice as well. The eggplant was so tender it was almost melted, and the tomatoes, onions, etc. were nicely seasoned and was very enjoyable. I used baguette pieces to eat most of the dish up with. The dish is piping hot and, as the server warned, there may or may not be pits in the olives (there were none in mine), so beware! There is no tap water served and, according to a local, this is a good thing since, again according to her, Honesdale has the US's 4th worst tapwater in the nation. So we chose San Pellegrino Aranciata Rossa (hubby) and a nice Sarasota sparkling (which may or may not be bottled right there in Pennsylvania). For dessert (to go; we were too full!), hubby got a delightful almond cake of some sort; I did not have the presence of mind to snap a photo of it before he devoured it (after we got home). He was generous, however, and gave me a bite - and it was so delightful and creamy and almondy. A few days later, I finally ate the cranberry muffin - and absolute perfection. Moist, wonderful, fresh cranberries. And despite the fresh cranberries, especially those on top, not one bitter one to be found. What's wonderful, too, are the prices. So, so, so, and did I say so reasonable?!?!? A delightful, charming place and, God willing, we will be able to go more frequently.

What really sets this place apart is the full experience. We were given a tour of the property and learned about the incredible history of the building. The private tour and the information he shared made the night even more special. We also had the privilege of meeting the owner and chef, Brondo. I picked it knowing the solid rep of Jessica's Cafe in Plainfield, so I can't say I was stunned to find out this was awesome - but given the expectations coming in, this probably even slightly exceeded them. Pretty cool. This was literally my first time in Fanwood, unless you count taking the Raritan Valley Line through here to Hunterdon County back in the day (I don't think it counts). The weather was a little iffy throughout the day, which I'm assuming played a factor in the town feeling a little desolate when we showed up. It reminds me a lot of the Newport neighborhood in JC - super, super gentrified. Maybe it's just the section where Jessica's is though, right across the street from the train station. We parked over there, not entirely sure if that was naughty or not, but given our outdoor seating, we easily could have peeped a cop or tow truck driver before anything terrible happened (I think it was fine, given it was a Sunday night). All that to say though, I'm not entirely sure where the ideal parking is if it's not at the train station. We were only in the restaurant for a minute (enough time to ogle a fridge or freezer of tasty looking meat to the right of the entrance), so I can't speak to the spiffiness of the interior. Even though rain was a possibility, it seemed worth the risk to stay outside due to the temps and large umbrellas. No regrets in that regard. We were seated promptly and ordered shortly thereafter, while also receiving some decent bread and butter with a bit of olive oil drizzle. Quite tasty. Somehow it's become an informal tradition, but if it's on the menu we usually get the Grilled Octopus. One of the better ones we've had. Nice and crispy (texture to me is the key to this one) and seasoned well. The accompanying potatoes were a nice touch to the proceedings - would totally get this again. A lot of the other apps looked good too, but someone accidentally made me birthday weenies on the grill earlier, so I couldn't get QUITE as frisky as I normally would. Both of us gave the lamb a long, hard look (and my chum wondered aloud about the ribeye special for the rest of the evening - possibly the one that got away) but I ultimately went with my classic Short Ribs entree. Delicious. Tender, flavorful and the perfect serving size. I was a little nervous that a puree versus mashed would mean the potatoes were too wet or liquidy, but not the case at all - they maintained their relatively solid integrity as far as I was concerned. I forgot to take a picture of dessert, but I got the Creme Brule. Also excellent, and at the perfect temp. I think there may have been a birthday musical accompaniment with that, but it's all a blur. Arguably just as good if not better was the service. Our waiter was super personable and professional, stopping by regularly and just added a hospitable touch to the meal that brought this to the upper echelon for me. Service is king, and it matters - you can't take for granted the ability of your server to essentially riff for two minutes on their menu knowledge, as well as just good-natured banter. The highlights from our meal- - The staff: seriously. Shout out to them. So welcoming from the start. Never rushed us. Asked us if we needed a break before jumping in to dessert. Attentive without being overbearing. A difficult balance they executed flawlessly. - Sea scallops with black truffle risotto: sensational. I would have licked my bowl if that was acceptable - Squid puttanesca: it's a fine line between undercooked squid til it turns rubbery, and this was an exceptional cook. - Pork tenderloin: flavorful and so moist - Rack of lamb with leeks: a jus you never knew you needed. - Bread pudding: unsung hero of the desserts.
