I used this company June 2017 to move. The guy Jeff seemed knowledgeable and helpful. He said the company had to place a charge on my card to hold the appointment, which was no problem. The day of the move things initially went fine. However, the movers marked the walls in the move and put a dent/crack in one wall as well. When I spoke to Jeff, he told me I would be sent a receipt for the whole service as well as a form to file a complaint. He also said scratches were allowed per our contract and he proceeded to read me the part of the contract that says so. I said fine, I don't need that read to me. I attempted to tell him about the dent in the wall (which the mover did while I watched him and then denied to my face). Jeff hung up on me. The movers also wanted full payment before they finished the job. When we later realized we were overcharged, I requested a refund for the overcharge and was granted it. What we did not receive was the initial charged removed from my credit card for the hold. We called about 3 times asking for the charge to be removed and was told another person in the company had to do it, which they never did. In the end, I had to get my credit card company involved to remove the charge. I also never received a receipt or the complaint form. The experience with this company ended up being very unprofessional, rude, and suspect. Unfortunately they were originally recommended to us, and I can not recommend them to anyone else. read more

Best Crew i've seen really prepared guy (Juan and his crew), however WORST customer experience ever, they come up with fees from everywhere (at the beginning they just tell u 115/hour) and it get MUCH more expensive than you expect. Besides that they refused to unload things before charging credit card, and also until now i did not Receive any bill with descriptions of charges. I was quoted $125 an hour for two movers. The move started at 850am and finished at 1pm but was charged over $800 and didn't use any of their supplies. I would have given Tri State a five star rating but there is one person whose attitude sucks and thinks he can lie and make excuses about why he couldn't return my wife's $100 deposit. Anybody with common sense knows when you take a deposit, it usually goes towards the full price of the service you received. So far Jeff T. has stonewalled my wife from returning her $100 deposit. We were told to wait until Saturday the 18th. As far as the workers, they did an excellent job of protect and shipping our furniture. This placed SUCKED. I paid over $1100 just to move from their storage unit to another facility's unit where I can readily access my stuff. Waaaayyy to expensive. They charged me for 2 hrs of unloading even though it only took 1.25 hours, and tacked on a fuel surcharge of $100+. When they initially picked up my stuff, the movers just sat in my parking lot for a half hour before driving away with my stuff and I got charged for the 30 minutes. The man who answers the phone was the worst. He repeatedly would promise to do things by deadlines or give me a call back by a certain time and would not do so. He was frequently rude/hostile on the phone. When I would ask for things in writing (email) he would refuse to do so, and even hung up on me the day of the move. Customer service is NOT a priority with this company. I feel bad for the actual movers. They're nice and just trying to do their job, but the company as a whole gets an "F". I flew out to Rockville a few days ago to help a very close friend of mine move furniture and equipment from a studio in Rockville to his home in Gaithersburg. We would have moved everything ourselves but as it was the weekend it was nearly impossible to get a moving truck. Most of the moving companies we could find were either unavailable at such short notice or way too expensive. We found Tristate Moving and Storage on Yelp and at first were a little hesitant because of some of the reviews but at that point we didn't have many choices and were on a time crunch. I am so glad we found them because they made this entire experience so painless and anyone who's ever had to move knows how rare that is. From the very beginning we were able to get a quote very quickly by filling out the form online. Their prices are extremely reasonable and everybody that we dealt with on their staff were extremely professional. Tristate Moving and Storage arrived exactly when they said they would and got all of my friends stuff moved without any hassle or damage. I have experienced the same thing as other 1 star comments. I was quoted one thing and our items were held hostage until we paid the new rates. When I questioned Jeff he thought, and I quote, "$200.00 over the phone quote was fantastic!" WHAT... why is this ok and why are they allowed to do this. Hidden truck fees not disclosed at the time of quote. He says one thing for the truck charge plus hourly rate for the guys then they up it when they get to your destination. I called Jeff because we were mysteriously charged twice for our move on two of our credit cards. He says this never happens and that he would call me back that same day to get it corrected once he got back to the office.Did I ever get a call...NOPE. When they came to move my stuff it took them 11 hours and the guy I the office is rude , does not care about anything but money. He was not polite. The guy who runs this company (Tom) is a crook. Don't do any business with them. My fiancée and I used Tristate to move her things from NY to DC and store them for a few months until our eventual move to CA and had an AWFUL experience. The manager we dealt with, Tom, was very nice and accommodating during the sales process but then turned aggressive and non-responsive immediately thereafter. Every time he charged us for the move or the monthly storage fee, we had to follow up multiple times to get an invoice explaining the charges, and we had an even worse time trying to get our things picked up for our final move-out. We wrote to him several weeks before we needed to move to ask how we needed to proceed to arrange for our things to be picked up, and we got a few one-word answers the next week. When we confirmed the moving date, he told us that the warehouse was too busy for pickups for two weeks surrounding that date and that we'd have to wait because other customers had already paid deposits to secure those dates. He didn't respond when I reminded him we'd already paid him over $4k for moving and storage, nor did he respond when I pointed out that we'd mentioned those dates several weeks before and he'd failed to let us know they weren't going to be available. Right now we're looking at hundreds of dollars over our initial budget to get another company to pick up our things from Tristate a week before the move, store them for a week, and then move them. read more

The single worst customer experience we have ever had was with Tri-State Movers in mid-June 2018 for a move across Washington DC. Their initial quote - after an email and phone call exchange - was one third of the final bill. When we questioned the bill by phone Jeff became aggressive, told the movers to keep our belongings in the truck, and was exceptionally rude. Reading other reviews across multiple sites suggests this happens regularly. We were given no choice to pay the bill as Jeff told us he would keep charging unless paid - and that we should discuss the final amount after the move was complete. Clearly it is a common tactic for Tri-State to give low ball quotes to win business and then jack up the final bill with over-time charges, inflated packaging costs and extra costs at every step of the way. To their credit, the movers were friendly, polite and moved our items well - they do a good job, but sadly the same cannot be said for the company's management. Tri-State should not be able to get away with their business tactics which take advantage of people who have almost no recourse, and make moving an even more stressful experience than it already is for most people. The only way this will change is if customers share reviews, and they learn that treating people in this way is not only morally unacceptable but that it is bad for business. read more

Excellent service and timely manner!! I have nothing but the best to say about Tri-State. My husband and I recently moved from Falls Church, VA to Washington, DC and this was the third time we've used Tristate Moving and Storage. The last time we used them was in 2012 and they remain an excellent moving company. The movers arrived on time, they were very polite and pleasant, and they worked really hard. We were not very well organized and there was still a lot to pack when the movers arrived. They did a great job packing and, as far as I can tell (we're still unpacking!), there was no breakage at all. The job turned out to be longer than predicted (due to our lack of OUR organization) and there were stairs involved but the movers didn't complain, had a great work ethic, and got all our belongings to our new home. The movers were great but in addition to hidden fees from Tristate, all of which I paid, the crass behavior of Jeff Anderson, yelling on the phone, hurling insults at me, a customer, is very unprofessional and ill-mannered. He initially comes across as knowledgeable but I never received one receipt from the company and further, Anderson claimed my additional storage items took 4 hours to fetch and load when in point of fact his worker said the unload was 20 minutes at the new storage facility. How can some 20 boxes, a bicycle, a desk, a keyboard, some 4 suitcases and a file cabinet take 4 hours with 3 men when the entire house took 8 hours+ to do with 4 men? Also WHERE is my downpayment of $100 which was to be reimbursed? Nada. The workers broke my nightable. A chair went missing. A worker told me he, referring to Anderson, "takes all the money" and pays us nothing". Revealing. Though I have no proof of the veracity of such a statement, Anderson comes off as a very raw piece of work without scruples. What a great moving company! We had their team move our entire office which included going up two flights of stairs efficiently and flawlessly. This was also done in one day. We scheduled a few days prior and they were a able to squeeze us in. Owner was on hand and help with directing his crew. They made sure everything was padded and safe. Shame on me for not checking the reviews before I contracted with this company which is a total scam! The manager Jeff T. Refuses to give his last name. They low ball the bid and then look out once they have your furniture. I was totally held hostage with threats to take my furniture back to their warehouse if I didn't meet their demands for more money. The contract was for just under $2K. They called three times during the move increasing the fees approximately $300 each time with threats of leaving my furniture on the sidewalk etc. it's a racket and if you've been scammed by Jeff T, you should dispute the charges. Beware of the scammers. Issue1: Hidden fees- They will add fees to your moving costs and ask you for payment prior to the work being completed. Yes, they where able to accommodate me with a short notice but that should have given some indication that this was a mistake. I was quoted a $149 an hour with a three hour minimum for three movers. However, they added travel and some other fees on at the end. They waited until they load all my stuff to spring the new costs on me. They already had my credit card information as well and made me sign all this paperwork about how much they were not going to pay for items they damage. Issue 2: slow movers- My items where in the storage unit which took three guys three hours to move into the storage unit from a two bedroom a few months prior to this move. That move cost me $480. Tristate slow movers took 5 hours just to load the items into the truck from the storage. Then another hour and half to move the items into the house with no set-up. That shows there was some fooling around on the loading part of this job if they got that done in a hour and half. By the time Tristate finished moving my items I paid $1625 due to the slow service and fees and a $100 deposit that I am not sure if I will get back. What a rip off. Also when I asked for a copy of the invoice to review the fee added to the invoice and I was told that would not be possible at this time because the office is closed and all the truck are not back in office. There were two movers that did most of the work on this job while the other one walked around like the supervisor. I did not need a supervisor I needed a mover. The saddest part about this is you have no way to dispute this when it is your word again the movers who are getting paid by the hour. When you call the office to complain it seems like there is no concern for you in the situation they just wanted my money. Moving is stressful enough you don't need this headache so be aware before you book this company. Tristate you should be ashamed of yourself for taking advantage of people like this. read more

DON'T DO IT!!!!!!! YOU WILL REGRET IT!!!!! Tom sounded like a kind and helpful man until the day of the move. The movers were an hour late to start. They make you sign a contract that says you will pay them $6.50 a roll of tape they have to use. I didn't think much of it as I had packed pretty much everything already. Lets just say his workers LOVE tape. I ended up paying about $260 in tape. They damaged the floors in the first house, as well as drove their truck into the back yard tearing up the yard as we had just had snow a few days before and the grass was wet. Now on to the move itself... these guys were SLOW! It took 2 guys a total of 7 hours to move me in and out of my last house into this one just a year ago. In 10.5 hours these guys couldn't finish the job and I paid for 3 of them! When I called Tom during the move, he kept telling me he would call me back but never would. Then when I brought all this up the next day he yelled at me and told me I should have told him this during the move, well duh... I was trying. I caught one of his guys trying to hide a bag of my power tools under his coat near the front of the truck, but according to Tom that was just a mistake and he didn't mean to do it and was in no way trying to steal them. Due to all the damage Tom told me he would email me a claim form (note according to the DOT site they don't actually have insurance!, nor are they a member of the BBB as it states on their website). I had read on here that people had issues getting the claim forms so I pushed him for when I would get it and warned him that if I did not get it by the time promised that I would be calling my credit card company. He told me I was over-reacting and crazy and hung up on me. He has also hung up on the owner of the house I moved out of as well. In order for them to process my payment, Jeff insisted that I let an employee take a picture of my credit card on his personal cell phone. Tristate Movers and Storage "Jeff the General Manager" originally quoted my mother 8-10 hours at $149 = $1,490 plus packing supplies which were not disclosed at the beginning of the move ultimately costing $852 in addition to the move. The total cost of this move was expected to be $2,342. A few items of concern, 2 days later they have escalated the cost of this move to be $3,474, now adding in a new over-time rate which was not disclosed, and we were not made aware of and did not agree to. Now 24 hours later we do not have a formal bill based on the original quote and this company has all of our stuff. The story as to why the bill keeps going up is continually changing. They tried to force my mother to sign a blank invoice and blank supply list. She demanded to know the cost of the supplies which is why we know that the cost is $852.00. This company has countless complaints of the same billing practice all over the internet with every story being the same. Under the FMCSA rights we have a right to pay the binding contract of 10 hours plus supplies $2,342. We have a right to not be overcharged beyond 110 percent of the bill. We are asking that an investigation be opened into this company who is continually taking advantage of and gouging the public especially elderly seniors like my mom. These guys moved me over a year ago, and day 1 they came with no tools to break down furniture so they were only able to move boxes and item they could fit through the front door. Broke my 60'' tv and insulted me by telling they would send me a check for $35.00 for a $1,700 tv (which they never sent).Also because of not having tools the first day they had to come back a second day charging me $4,600 and only taking off $400. First off, we hired this company because I saw the BBB emblem on their website. I find out now they are not with the BBB. There was multiple problems and I will list them below but they problem I was writing about is the movers broke my stone cocktail table. The movers told us when it happened, took photos with their phone cameras and contacted there boss immediately. We called the company about it the following day where the employee told us "you should have called yesterday." I explained we were in the process of moving and the workers did not leave until 5:30 and we wanted to contact Havertys Furniture about the price of the piece of furniture first. The company said they would email a form that needed to be filled out. The email never arrived even after multiple calls. I ended up calling and and was told they already mailed a check to us. That check never arrived. The table alone was about $350. The part that was broken was about $30 and the hardware is about $15. All we were asking was for the $30 and I even said I would install the part myself. Other problems with this TERRIBLE company: -The workers arrived unprepared. They asked for knives and scissors to cut the tape and boxes. - Once arrived to the new house on post, before unloading I had to sign the paperwork. It is obvious why this company only has one star. If I could give it 0 stars I would. I entered an online quote for a move on Wednesday. I received an email quote from Tom Parcells. But I spoke with Marcus before I had received the email. I shared all of the details with Marcus but when I called back on Thursday to set it up, I didnt realize that Tom was the one who had sent the email but who I didnt talk to. I went ahead and scheduled the move for today. Tom asked me for my credit card but didnt take any further details from me. I asked for an afternoon appointment and he said that he would send me the time in an email along with the price of the move when he had a chance. Tom said his guys would finish a job in the morning and call me when they were on their way. On Saturday, I called at 3:30 pm to find out if they had an approximate time they would finish their first job. He said it would be approximately 445pm or 5pm and then they would give me a call. I told him that we live almost an hour away from the storage unit and that it would be nice to know that it would have been almost evening before our move would be started. He started telling me sob story of the move prior to ours but that is not my problem. I told him that it would have been nice to have had a phone call around 12 noon or even 2 or 3 pm that they encountered problems at the first site. I told him that I was concerned about the movers moving the treadmill around to our basement entrance and he said that he didnt want to endanger his movers and put them at risk. I told him that I had emailed him that the movers would have to go around back to move the treadmill and that there was grass. He was argumentative and said that he could not control the rain and apparently didnt put the two together that if there is grass and it rains alot that it could be muddy. So because I didnt specifically say there could be rain and mud and that I didnt give him the weather forecast, he didnt want his movers getting hurt and suggested that I cancel the move. After he hung up with me when I said let's cancel, I called him back and asked for a written cancellation and an email saying that I would not be charged the deposit. read more

Just recently had a move and was initially a little nervous reading the reviews but after speaking to Jeff, the manger, I felt more at ease with my decision. Not sure if management was a bit different prior to my move hence the bad reviews but I personally had a really good experience with their moving company and was able to have a smooth stress-free move without any hassle. Jeff truly understands the stress that comes with moving, he was very accommodating to my needs. He was very knowledgeable and answered all of my questions. He was able to give a very competitive quote over the phone and there were no hidden fees and I ended up paying exactly what I had expected to spend. When the movers came, they did explain that due to some of our narrow hallways it will be more difficult to maneuver our large furniture, hence take more time to complete the job. These guys are honest people and I recommend them to anyone looking for movers in the DMV. Also this company offers a free month of storage which was an awesome bonus because we had downsized from our previous home and needed some room for some belongings so I really valued that added service! Very rude customer service representative. I received contact from them - as I currently live on the West Coast and have not contacted a mover - and was concerned about the authenticity of this company. I called to confirm if they contacted me in error of another customer and I was met with disrespect. The associate did not announce the company's name, (He just yelled "CAN I HELP YOU?" Into the phone) which is usual protocol for greeting customers so I was not even sure if this was a legitimate company. I asked for verification and he raised his voice at me only to tell me that they contacted me for advertisement purposes. I would not recommend any company who is 1) rude to prospective customers requesting any sort of information and 2) initiates contact with potential customers in this way; it is bothersome.
