It doesn't get more old school Chicago than Trohas. I've been eating here since I was kid and the food has always been delicious. Deep fried until golden chicken, catfish, shrimp, hush puppies and crab cakes. What more can you ask for when it comes to comfort food. Truly a pickup spot but you can dine the small nautical themed establishment. Still family owned and operated, they're humble nice folks, willing to provide what accommodations they can. This place is perfect for takeout lunch or catering a big party. I have nothing but love and respect for this 100 year old Chicago staple. read more

We came here right as they were opening. They were very welcoming and got my order out in no time. The place has a couple of tables but is mostly meant for takeout. The inside was really clean and the prices were fair. We I ordered Full order of Shrimp and Half order of Fish Chips. Both tasted fresh and perfectly fried. They were also seasoned well and came with either tartar, cocktail or mild sauce. I asked for mild sauce but either the mild sauce was to "ketchupy" or it was indeed just ketchup instead of mild sauce. I was slightly disappointed but didn't let it ruin my overall meal. I hadn't had Trojas for a long time.....we decided to finally take the drive and try some fish and shrimp. We had the cat fish and some shrimp with fries and coleslaw. The fish was cooked perfectly as were the shrimp. Fries were crispy and tasty, coleslaw I had to doctor up at home with some honey and apple cider vinegar. Overall, reasonably priced, perfectly fried fish, shrimp and fries!!!! Will definitely visit again and try more menu items. So one day, during lent I decided to give to place a try because of 1) the good reviews and 2) the name: Troha's Chicken & Shrimp House. From the NAME alone I thought that this place would be experts in both chicken and shrimp. Boy, was I wrong! I ordered 12 wings, plain and buffalo and a large order of shrimp. The place needs to be renovated but I guess if it ain't broke don't fix it? Located in the heart of Cicero. While I was there waiting on my food this guy, in a cowboy hat and boots, escorted a bike down the street, singing at the top of his lungs! Weird! They delivered my food outside to me. Nice. The shrimp is on point! Not overly battered, fresh, nice size, not overly seasoned and very tasty. You can get a dinner which comes with fries. The fries are just your average fry, decent. Cole slaw was not memorable. If you come here, just get something from the sea. Where the eff is my pickle that suppose to come with the dinner??? Now for the wings. From the name and past pics I expected whole wings. I received winglets that taste the same as the winglets from that grocery store that starts with the letter "J"! Pitiful. Not worth getting. As I looked at the reviews now (hindsight is 20/20) only ONE REVIEW out of 98 says something positive about their chicken and you would have to go back to 2009 to read it!!! If you do a search of the photos and type in "wings" a pic of whole wings pops up, but unfortunately that is from 2014! I've lived in Chicago for years but today was the first time I've tried Troha's. It is delicious! The fish chips were nice and crunchy on the outside, but moist and flaky on the inside. Best seafood I've had since I've moved to Chicago from the south. Perfectly cooked not too heavy on the breading and the seafood is fresh! Taste like they fry everything is fresh grease too. I didn't care for the crab cakes(it was made with artifice crab And heavily breaded) or the coleslaw(wayyy to much mayo) but to each is own. Otherwise the white fish and the jumbo shrimp was very, very good. We enjoyed the fish the most. Packing was safe and secure stapled shut so we definitely appreciated the extra layer of protection. Never heard of this place prior to COVID19 so the cool thing is trying new restaurants while quarantined. When this is all over we will be back for sure!! read more

This is my fav spot- definitely my top out of my first pick three choices for top shrimp houses in Chicago - always fresh- I found out abt this place abt 16 years ago when my grandmother who was in her 70s at the time, told me she didn't want shrimp from (the L name). She told me she wanted a place on 26th street but she couldn't recall the address- she said my grandfather took her when they first moved to Chicago... i was honestly thinking she was just confused bcus I had no idea what she was talking about ... but I just followed her direction and kept driving - she didn't even know if they were still open but she said they were the best ... and what do u know- I kept driving and there it was- still open. I've found this place through yelp, Chicago's Best, and groupon. They recently put out a groupon deal; otherwise, it's a little out of my way traveling to Little Village. I know this place is in the hood, but the interior is tiny yet clean, even the kitchen (I took a peek and looked pretty legit). They had a specific guideline for what you can order for the groupon deal, posted on the cash register (pick two (2) kinds of fish for the two (2) combos; this came with two (2) fountain drinks as well). That deal was $20. Time to reveal how everything tasted: the breading wasn't powdery or crumbly; it was done just right. The fish itself was fresh and had a substantial bite (we ordered the shrimp and catfish, like my normal routine). I'm specially fond of the coleslaw. The way they made it was interesting: there was a unique spice they put in, which reduced the greasiness of the mayo. It had a refreshing undertone to it that I never tasted in most coleslaw I had from different places. Everything was made-to-order, as fresh and hot as you could get. The workers there were nice. The third-generation owner, Robert (I think that's his name), was there, too to help out. The traffic was constant. Obviously Chicagoans know their fried seafood and have made the right choice. Established in 1917, the old neighbors have gone, and another batch of newcomers has settled down. I bet this part of Chicago has encountered enormous transformations. Troha's is still here and has managed to survive despite what's happening around them. If you can give this place a try, please come see them in Little Village. Trohas offers many types of fried fish and sides but the main event is really the fried shrimp and their sauce. Its got exactly the right type of breading or batter. Not overbattered like many other fish houses. Not sure if its true but I heard this restaurant is really old (100 years) and used to serve chicken originally. For all practical purposes this place is carryout. There is minimal seating inside but its critical to eat the shrimp ASAP before it gets too soggy from being wrapped up. They know this and supply packaging with vent holes. A 20 minute car ride home is just on the edge of ruining them. Weve eaten inside and also in the car..... whatever it takes. Last order I got curbside pickup which was convenient..... This shrimp is sooo good that I consider Trohas as one of Chicagos culinary wonders. read more

I love Troha's Chicken & Shrimp. By far, the best lightly battered and fried shrimp. So succulent and juicy. Crunchy and scrumpceous. Squeezing the lemon juice all over the crunchy morsals and dipping them in the cocktail sauce! Figuratively is heaven in my mouth. The fries are good, I recommend getting them extra well done and with an order of the hot sauce and ketchup. Among their salads, I enjoy the macaroni salad most. Coleslaw second, and then last potato salad. I've had the onion rings before but did not like them. The batter was too bread and thin onion. Cheese sauce is alright. I ordered the large fillets, large shrimp order and the wings that were/are on special for $1 each. I also ordered an additional coleslaw. EV-ER-REE-THING was delicious! This is a great place that I really drove pass many many years. So happy that I made my stop and check this place out. You have got to do the same. The only reason I can think of is that not enough people come here to eat. Maybe the location is it's biggest enemy? I dunno. I love this place. If I'm anywhere near here, I seriously contemplate dropping in and picking up a pound or two of the finest fried shrimps Chicago has to offer. Allow me to paint the picture. Succulent, jumbo Gulf shrimp, cooked perfectly. They know the exact temperature to keep that oil, the breading doesn't get too oil soaked, and the shrimp doesn't dry out. I mean, they've been doing it for 90 something years? I think they have the system down. Delicious non-chewy, grown up clam strips. Not the usual clam strips that are the size of your toes, and might taste like them too. These are the size of your finger, but taste better, maybe. Headless fresh Lake Superior smelt. Never had smelt? This is the place to try it. Or you can come to my house where I butterfly and fry them...But go to Troha's instead. Economic-as-hell hush puppies. 10 for $1.25? I'll take 40. Held together with love and happiness, Troha's Shrimp & Fish House brings significant amounts of nostalgic pleasure to my mother. You can only imagine my delight when we spontaneously drove to Troha's for my own induction. Troha's is definitely a surprising injection of something different into an otherwise homogenous neighborhood. Or perhaps the neighborhood changed with time, leaving the Troha's owners to blink around at surroundings that were once familiar. Certainly Troha's is old. Everything about it. The sign, the counter, the memorabilia tacked around the walls. It's all old. I would use the gentler word "antiqued;" however, there was also a layer of dust and grime. I watched a thread of dust dance precariously from the ceiling. It was clear that they were going for the feeling of an old ship with some of the stuff. Maybe it was fun at one time, but now it just needs to be run over with a Swiffer. There were no chairs or tables. You buy your food and leave. The owner (and the owner's son) were both manning the counter. A picture of the owner, his father, and grandfather was framed on the wall. It was nice to see an active owner at Troha's. I like it when owners take pride in their work. He had a cheerful and friendly disposition, which delighted my mother to no end. We walked out with shrimp and cole slaw for a cheap price. The shrimp (which my mom led me to believe would be MASSIVE and dripping with buttery goodness through a paper sack) were regular sized, battered, and deep fried then served in a styrofoam box. They were good, but exactly what I would expect of battered, deep fried shrimp. I think my mom's childhood memories were a bit grandiose for what she gleefully shared with me. Unfortunately, I don't have the same nostalgia for Troha's that my mother has in spades. The experience and food quality were not noteworthy enough to lure me back. I am waging that over $1000 has been spent by yours truly on Troha's since being introduced to it last September! I just simply love their fish soooo much! It is the closest to New Orleans that I've had in Chicago. Because I am always missing New Orleans and its food, po' boys especially, there is a method to get as close to Verdi Marte's po' boys as possible in Chicago. What you need is a loaf of Jimmy John's day old bread (excess dough gutted on the top half), mayo, shreded lettuce and catfish or shrimp from Troha's. I like adding Arnaud's Remolaude sauce (from New Orleans) to give it some zip. For you northerners, Remolaude is a tangy dressing-like sauce/condiment that has a tangy horseradish flavor to it. It is commonly served with fried green tomatoes. While this po' boy method is not Verti Marte, it brings fond back memories of stumbling down Royal St. late at night. Also very good at Troha's are the Alaskan Whitefish and Scallops. I want to thank my late friend Johnny Ferguson for sharing Troha's with me last fall. Johnny, may you rest in peace! read more

Me and the Wifey had a taste for some seafood. And we didn't want J&J fish (yuck!!) and we only like the shrimp at Lawrence's and seeing we wanted fish as well we chose not to go there. Instead we search and found that Troha's was close to us and the photos of the food looked great. We then saw them on Chicago's best and after seeing it we hurried to Troha's! We got the XL Order of shrimp, XL order of Fish chips, Jalapeño poppers and we tried the hush puppies. Now to me a hush puppy and Jalapeño poppers are gonna be the same pretty much. But Fish was GREAT!! Crispy on the outside and so flakey on the inside!! Delicious! The shrimp was also light and crispy with tender shrimp inside the crust! Absolutely delicious!! I've been coming to this Troha's shrimp for over 30 years. Although they've changed hands I believe a couple of times I do still find them to be a solid shrimp and fish restaurant. The shrimp are a nice size and breaded just right. Not too much and not too little. The prices have stayed reasonable over the years as well. I usually get a shrimp and fish (cod) combo dinner with a hefty amount of fries and coleslaw for $10.
