Stopped in for lunch today when I was in there plaza on some other business. Typical deli with a nice looking menu. I ordered the Reuben which came with a choice of soup, pasta salad, or chips. I chose the soup which was ok. The sandwich was very nice - basically as expected. My issues. On checkout there was a +$0.50 convenience fee added to the bill - really? I find this to be exceptionally poor form. I'm sure almost nobody anybody ever says anything. Wish I had. But what a cheap money grab. Build it into your up front prices if you need the money that bad. Not into the last minute bill at the end. Second, when I picked up food I asked for ketchup and was nearly shamed for it. Maybe a little unusual for a Reuben, but most places try to make a customer feel like just that, a customer and you made me feel not wanted. Not sure you thanked me as well. I'll wrap this up by saying that I don't go around looking to give poor or mediocre reviews. The sandwich was good. I actually really enjoy giving good reviews and am about to give stellar review for another establishment in this same business complex. But the treatment here today and the ticky tacky convenience charge earned this mediocre review. read more

My wife loves the pasta, so when I am in the area I stop in for it. I tried the French dip and was not happy with it. Next time I will stick to a cold sandwich. If I decide to eat in the next time, I will make sure I ask them to play music that isn't rap music where every other word was the "F" word. I think they just had it tuned out. The staff must be reading the Yelp reviews because we found both the lady server and the gentleman who may have been a manager or owner to be very friendly and attentive. They seemed quite proud of their place. They use Boars Head meats and cheeses, which shows in the quality of the sandwiches. I got the Reuben Wrap (they use 2 p's though I don't know why) with a side of Chicken and Dumpling soup. Man that was good soup! Flavorful and hardy, thick, not too salty, good amount of meat in it, and a good quantity for the price. The wrap was short but very thick with Corned Beef, shredded cabbage, sauerkraut, and a thousand island dressing. I only ate half and most of the soup to get full and brought the rest home for later. The corned beef was so tender, no chewiness or gristle or fat in it, just thin sliced lean meat. H got the Killer Klub of turkey avocado, bacon etc and pasta salad on the side. He said it was very good, though not as good as the club sandwiches he gets at the Lunch Box and La Mesa Bistro down the street. Both sandwiches were about $7.50 each and included the side of choice. He did not like the pasta salad--"Too ranch-y" he said. I tasted it and thought it was delicious so he packed it up and gave it to me to eat with my leftovers. He had a taste of my soup and agreed it was exceptionally good and he wished he'd gotten it, too. On the negative side, the pepper shaker was coated in stickiness, a phenomenon I have found in too many establishments (ranks up there with sticky remote controls in motel rooms). And the trash container was also sticky to the touch and had dark visible fingerprints on it. A turnoff implying lack of cleanliness. Still, my overall impression was favorable. I also like that they are open till 5 pm, unlike so many of the delis that close at 2 or 3. I liked the old-time pictures of the Del Coronado on the walls and the pretty mural of an old time trolley and station on the adjacent wall. Best pasta salad ever!! I usually come in on a Saturday afternoon after a good workout get a sandwich combo which comes with a drink, pasta salad and cookie. Boom! But a few weeks ago I was invited to a bday bbq and I did not have time make something so I had this amazing idea to order a pasta salad for the party. TSD offers a take out tray for pasta salad... i think it serves about 20 peeps probably more as a side dish. Cost is 16.95 and totally worth it! Well, we decided to try this place again and I'm so glad that we did. Nice and friendly welcomed us, took our orders and delivered delicious food. I got the club sandwich, forgot the name and we got the club sandwich with avocado, and my daughter got the huge Italian sandwich. We also got the roast beef with avocado sandwich, which was very, very tasty. Good selection of chips and sodas. My girls like the pasta salad. Our home was silent for about 30 minutes as we dug into our sandwiches, which are big enough to share-but I didn't. I overheard that there are new owners since October, so maybe that's why we felt more welcomed. It's so good we've ordered from there 3 times within the last two weeks. The only bummer is that they're closed on Sundays, but I guess everyone needs a rest. Oh, I'd love it if they didn't use styrofoam, maybe soon. My go to spot for a good sandwich. I used to work around the corner from here and would go quite a bit. Ladies were always kind to me, and would make accommodations to my order when asked. I went this morning and got my favorite, a hot pastrami deluxe. While my order was being made I saw they had HUGE brownies in their fridge. And only $2.50? Had to get one. I'll give 2 stars to the owner for being nice and making me feel welcome with a bit of chatter. I ordered a classic reuben but they ran out of rye bread so I had to settle for sourdough. I'm thinking you're a deli shop you shouldn't run out of those type of things. The classic reuben even on sourdough just tasted okay, the meat and dressing was bland, nothing to write home about and the pasta was alright, it was better then the sandwich. The place is small and not many tables to sit at during peak lunch time hours and the parking sucks if you don't have any change on you. I don't think I will be back, I can think of a few other deli places to eat at in the east county. Would I recommend this place to family and friends? Probably not but really go ahead and try it at your own risk just don't be expecting a lot. read more

Each sandwich comes with a pasta salad, but you can swap that out for other choices; my favorite is their salad. You can specify the ingredients in these made-to-order salads and sandwiches. Everything is delightfully fresh and of high quality. They have various drinks and cookies. Service is friendly and efficient. For what it is, there is little room for improvement. There are tables both inside and outside. One-hour parking is available in front, or there is the La Mesa Village commercial parking lot under the building. Pro tip: phone ahead and order. Another deli stood us up (no answer to phonecalls or emails) the day before, and when we contacted TSD and said, "We have a problem...", Their response was "No, you don't". Not only did they put together delicious, quality, sandwich platters, and some amazing mac salad with less than 24hrs notice, but they advised us on how much\what variety of food to get for our group and it was perfect. The new guy working there today made me the crappiest veggie sandwich I've ever gotten. It was soaked in mustard, there wasn't any cheese or sprouts, he added black olives, and my caesar salad was missing the dressing. Usually when I come here my sandwich has cheese, tomato, avocado, banana peppers, mustard and sprouts. I'm not rating this place low over one guy making me a bad sandwich because it's not a true representation of how good this sandwich shop really is. I've been coming here for years and not just because I'm addicted to the pasta salad. I like this deli, I like it a lot. They're open for breakfast and lunch. The soup here is pretty good, especially the potato cheese. They have a turkey sandwich special for everyday of the week. I believe I've tried them all. Another thing I like is that they also sell hot dogs here for my picky son. He pretty much only eats turkey or hot dogs here. They've got wraps, salads, breakfast sandwiches, soups. On Saturday they have a combo where you get a sandwich, drink, pasta salad or chips, and a cookie for $8.50. I've yet to find anything here I don't like. I've even tried a couple of their desserts. I still miss the other location, it was closer to my house, but I'm a fan either way and will travel over for that magical pasta salad. They sell the dressing in jars so you can make your own. I've tried it, naturally. The Trolley Stop Deli is located on La Mesa Blvd steps from the La Mesa Blvd Trolley stop in a small strip mall with the requisite Starbucks. Service is always friendly and efficient. You can call or fax in your order ahead of time. There is parking in the lot and on the street. There is limited seating inside. They also have a punch card for sandwiches and they're closed on Sunday :( read more

I have been here twice and liked it both times. The meat is fresh, the veggies are plentiful and the options are endless. It would be a 5/5 but the hours are pretty sporadic and the location is just blah right now. Parking is decent. There's a lot and some street meters.
