I go up and ask if my order ready and the women just says No. Not even ask what number am I or say sorry for the wait. So I let a few more moments pass and see 2 other ppl who just order walk out again. So I go back to the women and ask for a refund. She goes and say all these ppl order before me. This place has been here for several years. There is usually a long wait at lunch time. The food is good. Traditional Jamaican menu. There is a soda machine (free refills) and a fridge with select sodas and juices including ginger beer, champagne cola, etc. There is a small plain dining room with a tv that is usually off. Parking is not great but there is a free parking just south of the place. There are 3 other Jamaican restaurants within a mile and half of here: George's Jamaican Bakery, Spices Negril Restaurant and Ras Jerk Catering. A local favorite but I don't get it. It's almost comical but every time we go there they don't have something we want. They nail the jerk chicken but the rest of the menu... Ehh... I used to frequent this place, but those days are over. I got tired of asking for something and them not having it, no matter the time of day. Add to that, the last few times I visited, including today, the person serving the food had their mask below their nose. On at least two occasions, the mask wasn't even over the person's mouth. Every time I visit the this location, I get an attitude from different cashiers. It appears as if they don't want to work and know nothing about customer service. I went there today asking for brown stew chicken and jerk chicken with veggies no rice and peas. I have been going to the Tropical Jerk on Front Street in Uniondale for years. The food and service is so amazing at that location that I had to give the location on Grand Ave in Baldwin a try, especially since the Baldwin location is so close to my home. Well, that was the first and last time that I will ever go to the location in Baldwin, NY. For starters, it seems they have no heat there so it was freezing inside. Then I was greeted by a woman in a red hat with the worst attitude. She was nasty, rude and intolerable. She may have been upset because she was cold, because she had her coat on, but that is not the customers problem. I am a business owner myself and would immediately fire any of my employees that treated my patrons in that manner. She even proceeded to talk about me to the chefs as I left. I just ignored her, because I would never step down to her level. One of the biggest mistakes a business can make is putting someone with no manners in the front to deal with the customers. You ever get a hankering for something in particular and won't stop until your taste buds are satisfied. I had been at this place prior a couple of years ago and everything I asked for on their display menu above...they didn't have. So I asked "what do you have?" "jerk chicken". They had plenty of that because about 20 of them were laying on top of large board for I don't know how long. I took a chance and had some and didn't die and it was tasty. A friend came in town and wanted to go there and surprisingly they had what I wanted. It was a chicken curry roti. I understand this is not Jamaican but plantains are a universal delicacy and 80% of the time they don't have that either! They had the roti and it was delicious! I got the fever for another the next week and my friend must have been magic because the very next week they didn't have it. I went to the other location the next day during lunch and they even had it listed on their "daily specials". LOL after waiting there for 15 minutes in the hot box the person behind the counter informed me they didn't have roti. Then take it off your MENU! Bad attitudes, slow service and nothing ever available that is on the menu (not to mention the questionable way chicken is left out). Thank goodness for the internet. I work the overnight shift at my job, so usually stop at this restaurant on my way to the Southern State between 9:30-9:45pm; this way I have enough time to order, get to my job, and eat before my shift. I've never tasted anything else on their menu except for the Jerk Chicken, because that's all they ever have when I get there... never anything else.... and if you want Jerk, there's always a 15-25min wait. There's only ONE lady at the counter that has always been friendly to me. The other lady's are not welcoming AT ALL... it's as if they don't want your business. Also, they are suppose to close at 11pm, but one day I got there only a couple minutes after 10pm to look and see them cleaning up, and one of the rude ladies at the counter waiving her hand in a "No" gesture and saying we're closed. My guess is that they were out of food. I only gave this restaurant 3Stars and continue to go there because it's convenient for me, and though I've tasted much better and more authentic tasting Jerk, theirs is still pretty good (best with sweet sauce)... also I don't want to go to the typical fast food restaurants all the time. As far as the sides... both the cabbage, and the peas and rice are very dry with no taste. I recommend asking for sweet sauce on everything, and asking for some on the side as well. read more
