I don't know what I expected. But it wasn't what I walked into. The food is tasty, like homemade tasty. There is no effort at presentation. This place would fit better as a counter at a gas station. You pick from what they have available. The choice are varieties of pork, beef, or chicken. Many are sitting in vats if liquid and the meat is unseen near the bottom. It's expensive for what you get. You pay after you eat, which is weird. Each plate was 17 dollars (with a bottle of water) and it asks you to tip. That caught me off guard. The only service you get is the lady up front scooping the food on the plate. She doesn't check on you, she doesn't get your drinks, nothing. It's like McDonalds style service, which I wouldn't tip for. Yet I felt obligated since there was an option to tip. There are about four drink options. Water, Coke, Diet Pepsi, and Malt Goya. There is a large seating area, a TV, and a fish tank. But it is good. And the meat falls off the bones. The plantains wouldn't be any better in Miami (and I've had plantains many times in Miami). The rice is a generous helping. I was just hoping for more options, a better set up, and maybe table service. Maybe it's more of a lunch/takeout place. There was certainly more room in the food case. And they advertised a Cuban sandwich on the window, but it was no where in sight once inside. I'd go back if they added some greens to the menu. And if the price dropped a little. Or if I discover there really isn't any other tropical/Latin food anywhere else in Alaska. read more

Moved to Alaska from Bronx, NYC and I am Puerto Rican.. I missed having my mom and families home cooked meals. Came into this location in July 2022 this is not the current business. New owner apparently can not afford new signage and told me it was a fusion place it was clearly soul food to bad I wanted Mofongo. I did not appreciate the dishonest approach to get my business. Ha! This place is awesome if you like peeing out of your bum for hours on end. My favorite part was how conveniently located the trash can was to my table. That way I can dispose of this garbage food before it poisons someone else/ends up back in the kitchen/morgue. In all honesty this plate was so blahhhh. I honestly was excited to try this spot out being that I haven't had a home cooked Puerto Rican meal in a minute. If I could leave zero stars I would. Probably the worst tropical latin food I have ever had... Food was disgusting, Spanish rice is not made the right way, and the meat look like its been sitting there all day and the plantains taste stale. I like supporting local latin businesses, but this food was not latin at all. If they're going to call it a latin food they have to add some more flavor to the food or get some real latinos in there. -10/10. read more

I was in search of good food without the premium pricing from Anchorage downtown. Via Yelp, I have found this gem. I had the seasoned ribs, pig feets and sweet platano. The ribs were awesome with Spanish rice and gravy. The pig feets felt like a delicacy and was tasty. However, the pig feets entree had too much bones and not enough skin and meat. The sweet plantain were somewhat dried. The cook was kind enough to fry out some fresh one for me. If you didn't see it in display, just ask for some. Yelpers need to come out here and try this place. You will find this hole in the wall worthwhile to drive to. I didn't see any water provided. You can purchase drinks but I just brought my own water bottle. For $10 entrees, I left satisfied with the food in my stomach. read more

The food is excellent. There's no menu and the food change daily. I do know there's goat on Saturdays. It's basically a cafeteria style with a glass cover, you just pick out what you want to eat that they are serving, and the server puts it on a plate. And then you sit at their dinning area and there's no real service; nor do the servers speak English. Half the time I don't really know what I got because the server can't explain it to me. But who cares because the food is excellent and they serve goat on Saturdays. I'm not picky and this is my kind of place. read more

I admit I was a little skeptical going into this restaurant as the decor and general setting leave something to be desired. However once I saw the food I was glad we came here, it looked like home cooking and tasted like it too. My husband and I enjoyed our food and couldn't stop talking about how we felt like we were eating dinner at a family members home. This place was delicious. We were the only ones there but we were treated very kindly! This restaurant is homey and offers delicious Puerto Rico food. Their arroz con guandules was delicious. We were also informed that if you call ahead they can make Mofongo or Mangu so that it'll taste fresh. Definitely a hidden little gem. read more

They had no real menus, and we had to go off of what was posted online. I cannot believe this place is not on yelp already. I hope they are still in business... I havent been there since my doc recomended that i chill out on all the bad cholesterol. Tropical Latin Food is the only Puerto Rican/Dominican restaurant in Anchorage and yes, this place has all of my favoriate arrtery clogging dishes.. There is a lot to choose from and Arroz con Pollo is highly recommended, He does Cuban sandwiches too. They have Mofongo on occasion. Ribs,and Lechon (roast pork) are also delicious. read more

I have consistently had terrible, rude, and discriminatory service here! I've been in 3-4 times over the past 2 years, going back because the food is unique to Anchorage, and leave every time feeling unwelcomed as a person not of Latin/Hispanic origin. One time this summer I went around dinner time and their open sign was on. They told my fiancée and I that they were closed, so we went across the street to Taco King. When we left TK after about 30 mins, Tropical Latin food's open sign was still illuminated. When I paid for my food today, the employee who rang me up gave me my cash change ($6) and proceeded to hold the $1 as his self prescribed tip. While I would have tipped anyway, it was definitely poor form! And overpriced food for the quality and quantity you receive. If it ever came out that this is a front company, I would NOT be surprised. read more

However when it was my friend's turn to buy his plate they gave him a new batch of plantains because according to the very cold server they were burned! This is a mixed review. Really nice latin food in a hole in the wall location just off base. No prices were posted but in a small and very casual location we weren't concerned. We stepped up and asked the cook/owner to put small portions of the meats behind the counter with the rice and beans - and she told us to pay later. We were very happy with the savory nature of the food and quality of the spice. But, we were surprised by the cost when we paid after the meal - the prices were not commensurate with the meal. And, I think that's why we were the only customers in the restaurant during the peak lunch time (to be fair - one person came in for takeout while we were there). So here's the tip: if it matters to you ask what the charge will be when you step up to the counter - what seems like a buffet lunch counter will turn into a pricing model similar to mid to high range sit down lunch fare. read more
