We traveled to Troutman's BBQ on a blistering hot July afternoon. The staff was as welcoming as the air conditioning. I love the local restaurants where the staff are so nice! The owner even stopped by our table to ensure all was ok. We ordered several BBQ plates & sandwiches with fries, slaw & 1 salad. The fries, slaw & small salad bar were solid, but the BBQ was a bit weak. The meat didn't have a smoke flavor even though they cook over wood coals. The meat was chopped nicely, but needed a little spice. I added a bit of salt & Texas Pete to enhance the flavor. I wish their was a hint of vinegar in the sauce which is my personal favorite. They have daily specials & the prices are lowest I've seen for BBQ! Give them a try! read more

Troutman's barbecue Has been kind of a staple in Denton, North Carolina for quite a while. I would expect more than what we experienced. Let's get something out the way first. The waitress that we had was great as she should be. The food not so much the barbecue chicken tasted like it had been baked in the oven and not smoked like it should be coming from a barbecue restaurant especially a woodburning barbecue restaurant my wife's chopped barbecue plate was tasteless I was really disappointed. We ordered a serving of the pig wings. I was expecting maybe danish pork.shanks or riblets or something instead of just generic chicken wings that was totally over promised and over priced. Myself and my wife went there on a whim passing by, it was not busy so we decided to stop and try out their food. The service was great we were seated immediately and brought our drinks. Once we ordered the food was brought fairly quickly and it was all very good and hot. The food had a great taste and was prepared fresh. They offered salad bar and the waitress stayed on top of our drink refills which was refreshing not to have to ask. The establishment is a little older but has a great feel and would be a great place to take family and friends or children. The portions are worth the price . I recommend trying the restaurant out and I will return again. read more

While in Denton on another matter, we stopped by for a Chopped BBQ Sandwich ($2.75), and while the taste remains solid (meat is tender, moist, and slightly smokey), there is not a great deal of meat on this sandwich, nor is there much slaw. Most of what you taste is bread. Don't think we'll stop by again! read more

Troutmans, was started some 40 years ago by Pee Wee Troutman. Pee Wee got started at Tarlton's BBQ in Lexington, then went to Denton to open his own.Now his children run the place.I think they still may have curb service, not sure. They serve breakfast but the Q is what people come for. Chopped or sliced your choice, trays or plates pretty good meal. On the weekend's BBQ Chicken is served,good salad bar to. They have deal's through the week on cheese burgers or breakfast sandwiches. There always a crowd there, that;s a good sign. read more

I eat at Troutmens often when I vis my parents. They have great food and great and fast service. I would go there anytime!

I like this place ! I called my order in, and they were nice from beginning to end. We got hot dogs, fries and (of course) Cheerwine! I am a southern girl so I prefer the pink hot dogs, and they use the brown dogs. I usually don't like them at all, but I must say that I liked theirs very much. The chili and slaw were both tasty. The fries are straight cut, hot and flavorful. The cashier was cool, and once we chit chatted - I learned that she is part of the original family that owns Troutmans. The dining area appeared small, and there are 3 bar seats at the counter. The place is aged, but it is clean and well kept. Denton has an odd reputation, and this is the first time I've ever stopped to eat there. I would definitely stop in again! read more

I've been hearing about this place for years because it's in my husband's home town and he misses it. One day we were in town visiting so he had stop in. The bbq pulled pork was tasty and I would go back but they really need to clean up the place. The menu and condiment bottles were sticky, the napkin dispenser had dust all over it, and there was one table in the dining area that was used as a storage area and has accumulated a lot of random things that they must not be able to find a better place to store. I was a little surprised at how small the portions were for the prices that we paid. Especially because this place is dirty and located in Denton, I think they need to either reduce some prices or increase the portions. read more

BLUF: Old School BBQ. This place is special to me, so this review is probably a little biased. I grew up outside Denton, but my dad and his family are from outside Denton. Part of the Wilson clan, Ancestry.com tells me that I am likely related to half the other people in the world that answer Denton NC when asked where they are from. I have been coming to Troutmans literally as long as I can remember, however I joined the Navy about 18 years ago and had not visited in that span of time, since probably the mid-90's. When a hiking trip with my daughter took us out to Bald Mountain, I thought I would also introduce her to another piece of my childhood. Troutman's has not changed one chair or one spoon, and to me, a fairly well travelled mid-30's southerner reminiscent of simpler times, that is a remarkable and beautiful thing. It's like in the Disney movie, Ratatouille, when the food critic eats the ratatouille and has a flood of warm childhood memories. Troutman's is like that for me. Lunch Sunday after church with my grandmother, breakfast with my dad after a Saturday morning hunt, dinner with my grandfather after fishing Tuckertown or Uwharrie all day. Troutman's is at-least-locally famous for their red slaw. It is simply the standard to which others are compared. Their pulled pork is what I guess you could call Lexington style, but to me Lexington's BBQ is Troutman-style. Hush puppies, fries, everything else is standard, but not what you go to Troutman's for. If you want a burger, there is a Hardee's right up 109. If you want a sit down menu with a larger selection, or you don't actually want BBQ chicken or pork, Rick's is right next to Hardee's. But if you want the best old fashioned, old school BBQ, it really doesn't get any better than Troutman's. Yes their facility is old, probably a little grimy by city standards, the ketchup bottles should probably be replaced, but to me that is part of what makes the place special, authentic and not some mass produced, frozen Smithfield crap joint owned by a restaurant investor from Maryland that went to NCSU 30 years ago. Curb service-honk your horn and the waitress will come to your car and get your order. Who does that anymore? Troutman's. All I can ask is for Troutman's to not change a thing. read more

If I could give it minus stars I would. The only time we ever ate here my daughter threw up everything within 10 minutes. She was so sick to her stomach it was pathetic. After she got it all off her stomach she was okay but it was the stomach ache and vomiting in the truck that just really was a nightmare. We have yet to eat their since and when we told people that we knew in town they laughed and asked us why we went there in the first place. Evidently not many people in town eat here since it's so nasty. This made me feel like a fool. Well fool me once is all I have to say because you wont fool me twice. Me and my girlfriend and her friend came here to eat because it was suppose to be cheap well the food was cheap on paper but they charged for everything even things you don't ask for they gave us a small cup of mayo with my girlfriends bbq sandwich and that was 65 cents ridiculous. Let me say these people are nice, we had fun with them and the service was good. The food was pretty fresh too other than the canned green beans. But this is supposed to be a Bar-B-Q and it is not. They cook the meat in an indoor electric oven with no spices or rub on it, no flavor. I know I asked for my sauce on the side. Zero flavor on the meat not even salt. Throw me a bone at least splash a little liquid smoke on it! Bar-B-Q should be cooked over a wood flame pit and or smoked and should have at least a little rub or marinade. Anyone can do what they do: put a pork shoulder or roast in an oven and turn it on. Again the food was fresh and cooked properly (except my wife's cold fries which they rectified) but let me tell you why I gave this place one star and not two as they were close to getting two. 1) The biggest reason is the meat has no flavor. Their sauce is NC vinegar based but has too much sugar and a small flavor profile. It's not a good sauce.This is supposed to be a Bar-B-Q! 2) They offer a salad bar for $2.50 additional if you don't want their slaw which was a sugary lame slaw. BUT you get a tiny bowl and only one trip to the salad bar! That was funny! 3) So I ordered a side a of green beans. $1.50 small bowl. Canned and heated, that's it. Throw me a bone, put a piece of bacon in there at least! 4) The final laugher is we usually get water with lemon or unwsweet tea with lemon but since their only lemon was lemon juice in a plastic packet we got water. They charge .35 cents for water! I've never been to a place that charges for water. (Vasoline not included) They really need to remove Bar-B-Q from their sign. Zero flavor other than their lame sauce. My lunch for the "large" portion of pork (about 8 oz), one trip salad bar, green beans and water was 11.65 and that's too much for the small portions and for a lunch. Again I want to say these people are nice and the food is fresh but that is it. Just because they are nice has nothing to do with the quality (lack of) of the food. Quite a disappointment. Not going back. I'd rather do a McDouble and salad from McDonalds and use their Wi-Fi and save $10*, that is a sad but true commentary. ET * we tipped and the total was over $20 for two and I hate McDonalds! Oh the four hush puppies that came with my pork were pretty good. read more

These people charge you for TO GO BOXES (.25), USE OF A DEBIT CARD(.25), AND CRACKERS (.2)!!! What?! I refuse to be nickel and dimed when I dine out. I have always had great service and good food here until today. the service was still great, but the food... the chopped BBQ was about a 1/4 spoon of BBQ and 3 tablespoons of slaw and they scrapped the bottom to get a greasy serving of onion rings neither could I eat... I feel let down by the poor food quality... read more

Very disappointed that there isn't a choice between red and white slaw. I don't eat red slaw as well as a lot of people. Plus, chose "rolls" instead of hushpuppies and the "rolls" are hamburger buns? They were just stuffed in the brown bag with the barbeque and red slaw containers. Sorry, but that's just not cool. read more
